Dr. Michael Mann compares visitors to his Facebook Page to "Beetle Larvae"

They are the larvae of the huhu beetle, Prionoplus reticularis, the largest endemic beetle of New Zealand, a member of the longhorn beetle family Cerambycidae. The whitish larvae are up to millimetres ( ) long. They are edible and are said by some to taste like buttery chicken. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Some days, you get gifts from on high.

Dr. Michael Mann apparently still doesn’t understand how his own actions invoked the Streisand effect. So, he compares people asking questions to the larval form of insects.

Steve McIntyre tips us off to this and writes with the driest wit possible:

From time to time, we hear from climate scientists that they are limited in their responses by the dignity of their profession. The dignity to which climate scientists aspire is nicely exemplified by the following remarks of a prominent real_climate_scientist:

hey trolls who have been given marching orders to flood the comment threads here like an infestation of beetle larvae: Don’t bother! We’ve seen the mindless talking points before, and coming here to parrot them simply (a) pollutes the otherwise thoughtful discussion in the comment threads here, and (b) exposes the intellectual bankruptcy of your climate change denial zealotry.

Here’s the screencap:

I wonder, has Dr. Mann just libeled everyone whose comments he has been serially deleting? The best part is Steve McIntyre’s response, be sure to read it here.

In other news, it has now been 10 days since Mark Steyn wrote the article that ticked off Dr. Mann, and now the backlash has sent him scurrying for entomological comparisons for lack of any better arguments.

Since the Steyn article is still there, I suspect that NRO has told Dr. Mann and his attorney to “go fish”. Well, at least he’s having bait delivered.

I’m reminded of this quote from Dr. Roger Pielke Jr.:

“If Michael Mann did not exist, the skeptics would have to invent him.”

Stay classy Mike!

“Dr Mann has a facebook page?”
Having a Facebook page is only a partial clue to Mann’s reality-check failure. His readers, if any, reinforce his sense of self-importance. Well, at least the ones that he doesn’t summarily delete.

Some kind of bizarro lifeworld irony in that just when the climate science world was getting Mann’s 1998 and 1999 NH reconstruction papers, the IPCC process was ramping up for AR3 and the alarmists were going crazy for ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, George Monbiot was publishing this nutty screed:
Monbiot 1999: “Global warming means that flying across the Atlantic is now as unacceptable as child abuse”
Can we say that all the alarmists who continued jet-setting around the world for their meetings and vacations were all the “so and so of climate science”?? [I won’t make light of horrible hideous activity reflected in the Penn State cases or any child abuse cases, but I simply point out that it’s one of the leading alarmist propagandists who felt it was appropriate to liken all skeptics to at least supporters of child abuse]
i.e., it is the propagandists associated with Mann & co. who feel free to smear and libel with anything that pops into their heads.

Hey now… Facebook is a legitimate tool for people like me that have connections thay would not otherwise be able to maintain due to geographical and other separations. I also have a LinkedIn page for professional contacts, though I rarely use it. All of my 95 “friends” are people I actively maintain friendships with, howeverr. 🙂

Not that I give a cracker what mental health professionals think, but with the lies, logical fallacies, etc. contained in Mann’s facebook post, they’d have a field day describing what Mr. Mann is all about.

It’s sad to see the now-discredited Dr. Michael Mann flailing so. He should have simply corrected his work rather than double down on what amounts to prestidigitation.

July 25, 2012 7:26 pm

The picture of huhu grubs is wrong. My understanding is that Mann is bothered by swarms of dung beetles, which are very attracted to his work, for some reason.

Larvae respond electro-physiologically via structures in their “head” neurologically orientate them toward exudated CO2. When moisture fosters carbonic acid holding the CO2 there are chemo-receptors moving them toward their feed.
Now, in the case of underground larvae that detect a plant root’s CO2 gradient exuded there are other compounds put out by the roots to consider. In the case of the Cockchafer larvae (yes, it exists) if the plant roots are damaged & CO2 around it manages to feed easily. However, when the plant root is not already damage even if there is the same level of CO2 being exuded the Cockchafer larvae does not orientate so well toward it’s feed.
? Are the larvae heading to Mann just because of his CO2 plume or because there’s so much underlying root damage he can’t mask how much gas is being exuded ?

Dr Mann has aptly proven 1 phrase of wisdom…
“Arguing with him is like teaching a pig to sing,
it accomplishes nothing but annoys the pig”

July 25, 2012 7:47 pm

“The Penn State inquiry exonerating Michael Mann — the paleoclimatologist who came up with “the hockey stick” — would be difficult to parody. Three of four allegations are dismissed out of hand at the outset: the inquiry announces that, for “lack of credible evidence”, it will not even investigate them. (At this, MIT’s Richard Lindzen tells the committee, “It’s thoroughly amazing. I mean these issues are explicitly stated in the emails. I’m wondering what’s going on?” The report continues: “The Investigatory Committee did not respond to Dr Lindzen’s statement. Instead, [his] attention was directed to the fourth allegation.”) Moving on, the report then says, in effect, that Mann is a distinguished scholar, a successful raiser of research funding, a man admired by his peers — so any allegation of academic impropriety must be false.”

“and (b) exposes the intellectual bankruptcy of your climate change denial zealotry.”
I know this has been said before, on numerous occasions, but does anyone who posts on here know anyone who denies climate change ?? I sure as hell don’t.
Isn’t it Mann’s ilk and their zombie followers who think that the climate should be static and how it was when they decided it was optimal ??
….. which is probably the half-remembered utopia of their childhoods no doubt.
Or perhaps it’s because their being incapable of doing anything useful for humanity, they have to steal money from those who are capable, by continuing this hoax in order to make a living.

Perhaps at the risk of inadvertently dissin Molly Hatchet, I will post this for all the right reasons.

or should it have been this? Your choice……….LOL!

My apologies to the Molly Hatchet crew for using their video to make a point that is perhaps out of the original intended context, but it works. .

An old phrase from the 60’s whose time has come: “Don’t bug me, Mann.”

Skiphil

well the Mann does have his loyal defenders in the media… here is how the “national environmental reporter” for the Washington Post mis-describes what the fuss is about, basically parroting Mann’s revisionist history:
[this is from May 25, 2012 but I haven’t seen it cited on the blogs before — just an example of how journalists parrot whatever someone like Mann tells them to say]
Washington Post review of Mann’s book embraces uncritically his account
[my emphasis]

“When it comes to key warriors in America’s battle over the causes of climate change, few rival Pennsylvania State University professor Michael E. Mann. Mann, who directs the Penn State Earth System Science Center, led a 1998 reconstruction of temperature records going back thousands of years and showing that global averages had shot up in recent decades….”
…..
“Two Canadians, mining consultant Stephen McIntyre and economist Ross McKitrick, challenged the hockey stick on a variety of fronts. First they went after the proxy data; later they employed the same statistical tool that Mann and his colleagues did, but in what Mann considers an inconsistent way. The result was a smoothing out of the pattern embodied in the hockey stick. “If there is a lesson” in these sorts of fights, Mann writes, “it is that scientific findings that rest on such technical complexities are prone to abuse by those with a potential ax to grind.””

Michael Mann by his elimination of the Medieval Warm Period
demonstrated a woeful ignorance of the cyclical nature of things,
Judging by his proclamations and his actions
Dr Mann has not realized that the way he is perceived has
changed…indeed that the world has changed.
In the Hockey Stick chart he created a lasting monument to his own failure.
Celebrity has a trajectory,
pride comes before a fall
stories have a beginning, middle and end,
brands have a shelf life,
cults blossom and fade.
Someone above described him as ‘narcissistic’,
regretfully, I think ‘autistic’ might be closer to the truth.
