Weekend open thread – What are you doing for the rapture?

Somehow, standing in line for this just doesn’t do it for me.

So the world ends tomorrow, May 21st, so some people say. What will you do?

Will our east Asia and European readers please let us know how it’s going as the time marches across the face of the earth. Open thread –

Grimsvotn Volcano in Iceland has started erupting in the last few hours. Should I start saying my goodbyes now, or just pop down to my local for a few pints of Guinness ?

Apparently many of the believers sold their belongings and burned throuth their cash. When will they learn.

If you’re really into irony, you should check out some of the comments on the ‘rapture’ article over at Climate Progress.
Many CP commenters are baffled by people believing such stupid nonsense when, as every child knows, the world really is going to end due to AGW real soon now.
Really funny,
Marcus

Foster .. . .
Uh . . . sorry, dude . . . I guess you’ve been ‘left behind’ . . .

May 21, 2011 2:33 pm

You evangelical Christians believe you will saved by being
physically swept away during the Rapture.
Have you considered that you might have gotten that backwards? I.e. maybe the
ones “saved” will be precisely those who are “left behind”?
That’s actually the way the Bible describes it in Mat 24:37
“37 For _as the days of Noah were_, _so will be_ the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying
and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark,
39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and _swept them all away_, so too
will be the coming of the Son of Man.
40 Then two will be in the field; _one will be taken and one will be left_.
41 Two women will be grinding meal together; _one will be taken and one will be
left_. ”
But which is which? Who will be “saved”? the one “taken” or the one “left”?
Verse 37 contains the answer: it will be as in the days of Noah, the ones swept
away (“taken”) were the losers, the ones _not_ swept away (i.e. Noah and crew)
were saved. They got to stay in the earth (v’haaretz). The meaning is plain to
me.
I’ve thought about this a lot and have not found a verse in the Bible that really supports the view that the ones taken are saved. Recall that the warnings in the Old Testament all
revolve around the evil being swept away. The “good guys” get to stay.

Proverbs 2:22 But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be uprooted.
Proverbs 10:25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.
Proverbs 10:30 The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land.
Proverbs 12:3 A man cannot be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.
Job 21:18 How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a gale?
Psalm 52:5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
Psalm 58:9 Before your pots can feel [the heat of] the thorns–whether they be green or dry–the wicked will be swept away.
Psalm 90:5 You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning–

Just saying.

Ask Northampton Rugby team about the end of their world this afternoon in Cardiff (Wales) Millenium Stadium when the Leinster (Ireland) team took them apart in the 2nd half of the match. Northampton were leading 22/6 at half time and didn’t score even one more point.
It is 22.51 Irish Summer time here now and everything is stil and peaceful outside. I am fed up waiting for the “Rapture” so I’m off to bed.
See you all in the morning D.V. (Deo Volente)

My wife and I are celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary. It was actually on the 20th, but we both had to work.
So we are up in Vail working out some of the sexual tensions left over from the years together.
Tough work but someone has to do it.

Johanus, I agree with you completely, except for your use of
“evangelical” – which means those who believe in the Good news. We are talking about American fundamentalists who are following “Dispensationalism” – a relatively new late 19th Century heresy – which leads to all sorts of problems – It wasn’t the faith of Wilberforce, Newton, Shaftesbury, Whitefield, (or in USA: Edwards, Dabney )
As well, the ten commandments come with a comment from God that he will bless those who keep them for a thousand generations – or something like 25,000 years – I think Moses was about 3500 years ago – so settle down folks and start putting the teachings of Jesus into practice instead of wanting to be removed. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us! 🙂 –
and we do need to look after this world as stewards – so the climate controversy is something we need to understand

Australia has made it past the 21st.
So I’m still around to debate Scottish Sceptic. At 12:36 am he quotes Christ as saying ‘this (i.e. His) generation’ would see the end of the world. My divinity student friend tells me that the word ‘this’ is a special Greek term meaning ‘this which was just referred to’. Look up the passage and the part immediately preceding ‘this’, and you’ll find that it doesn’t necessarily refer to Christ’s generation at all.

If I remember my prophecy correctly, only 144000 in the entire world are going to leave in the first round of the apocalypse. In a world of 7 billion, that’s about 1 in 48000. I wonder how that ratio compares to people who just go missing on any given day? Milk cartons, “have you seen me?” unexplained mysteries, etc. Do any of us here even know anywhere near 48000 people? I believe prophecy also compares the rapture to “a thief in the night”, which to me that sounds like we’re not even going to know that anything happened until it’s already passed. I believe Rev also implies that everything will seem hunky-dory for quite some time before the bad stuff really starts coming to a head. So in other words, if the 144000 got raptured, we may not even notice, and it will be business as usual for another 3 1/2 years.

Arizona 5:00 PM local time and NO RAPTURE.
Luckily we planned ahead though, and got our party-animal neighbors to throw a wall buster tonight. The theme is decadence. Party show-time in two hours.
