Somehow, standing in line for this just doesn’t do it for me.

So the world ends tomorrow, May 21st, so some people say. What will you do?
Will our east Asia and European readers please let us know how it’s going as the time marches across the face of the earth. Open thread –

Well where I am it is already the 21st do I can tell you what we have done so far. Just had a nice group breakfast at our neighbors. We will be moving back to Denver next week from the Philippines. So far no rapture and it’s just after 12 noon. At what time was it to happen and is that GMT? By the way HCamping was wrong about this same event back in Sept 1994. Think he needs a new sliderule (he’s an engineer you know)..
What time does it start? — I don’t want to miss it.
Rapture?? I was just hoping for a bit of a tingle…… but an epiphany would be nice, I suppose.
I’ve got a Rapture Saturday survey running.
http://carlbussjaeger.blogspot.com/2011/05/rapture-saturday.html
So far, most of my readers are either plotting to loot the departed souls’ abandoned homes or skeet shooting.
I was thinking maybe a Rapture-themed cookout, appropriately decorated with helium balloons.
Damn now we will never know if the IPCC forecasts were correct.
Just not fair that we be denied doomsday in 50 years time by moving the date forward to tonight.
Don’t forget about your pets!

stumpy I’m there too – they are moving as per GMT
Put a little water in those shoes and add some dry ice. Makes it more interesting.

Its already may 21st in New Zealand, and I can confirm I am still alive at the world, well at least my part of it, is fine!

Then obviously you’re one of those left behind
Watching my daughter’s team get a thrashing on a winding netball court some 16 hours ahead of Anthony, the discussion of rapure day caused me to reflex on how so many of our anxieties and fears trace back to our fear of our own death.
It’s about how we deal with these fears through the stories we tell ourselves to express these fears. Somehow we are each attracted to diffent types of stories…for some it is one giant catastrophe, for some we have control and it’s our fault, for others we are entirely at the mercy of la fortuna. Much of this was woven into religious narrative, and medieval christianity grew lush with every possible variety from which to pick and choose.
The great project of empirical science begun in the late 17ths was an attempt to take us beyond narratives of these fears to a rational assessment of cause and risk, and into an attempt to determine what we can change while admitting what we can’t. Astronomy became distinguished from Astrology. Burning witches to prevent evil ceased. It has been a constant battle for science to subdue the tendency of its practitioners to return to these fear narratives.
What is so important about Climate Change Science is that the return of these narratives into the heart of sciences has not only been fostered but celebrated. Even our scepticism is often redued to one of these narratives, apocalytic fatalism. This is what makes this post about a prediction that seems rather loopy, and so irrelevant to a science blog, not at all frivolous, but instead entirely pertinent to our discussion of the corruption of science.
In what time zone is it scheduled to start ??
…. or did it already ??
Well here in NZ it is 4:30 pm 21st May
I’m reminded of this hymn
The day Thou gavest, tookest Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at Thy behest;
It’s all over mate.

It’s worse than we thought.
No, really. Anyone notice the parallels between the AGW camp and Camping? The ideology, fervor, dedication to something with little or no real foundation? Has this kind of mindset permeated the IPCC? And the calculations. Careful, precise……
Warped and meaningless calculations??????
“Anyone notice the parallels between the AGW camp and Camping? ”
The AGW camp is smarter. By saying doomsday is in 50-100 years time – they ensure they wont be debunked so fast.
I’m gonna embark on a 200-Km journey around Kurdish Iraq, through some of the areas tha Saddam Hussein tried to Enrapture 20-odd years ago. He didn’t succeed, and the Kurds of Iraq will thrive once more. So if the big Rap-Chore happens today, well, I guess I’ll be here. Tomorrow, whilst everybody’s all giddy at the Pearly Gates, I’ll be flying back to my Earthly Home, Calgary, home of a good bit of the world’s carbon footprint. I won’t have to worry about the Hansens and the Gillards of the world, for they will have attained sainthood.
Yeah! er, Not!
Rapture?
I thought it was rupture … as in the space/time continuum and yet another crackpot scientist warning of the disasters facing Gaia …
Oh well, rapture, I can handle … I’m an old hand at this, been through so many. Somebody wake me when it’s over.
Me? I’m keeping a close eye on my Golden Retrievers. If they suddenly disappear I’m gonna have one of those “oh shit” moments. I know deep in my soul that God loves Golden Retrievers more than humans (God knows I do). If they’re available for breakfast I figure I’m in the clear.

Damn (pun intended). I did my laundry AND found a clean pair of socks, with no holes in them, for nothing. No fair.
Well, it’s fast approaching 5pm here in Godzone (NZ for the masses), and nothing – quite disppointing as my Tax bill is due and it would be the ultimate avoidance strategy.
Do you think they’ll belive me when I tell them I expected the world to end, so spent it !!!!
Andy
Just like any other prophecy, this one will be forgotten in a few days.
at least the average IQ will go up……
I get the feeling that Harold Camping wants us to send him money just like the AGW followers and scientists want us to send them money to save the planet. I find this “Rapture” to be a bunch of nonsense and a waste of time. The weekend will go as planned and nothing is going to happen. Events like these and AGW are ramped up because the new age of social media and networking. I can say that the world is going to end 1 Sept. 2011 and ask people to send me thousands of dollars, so I can claim to save the world.
A couple of my co-workers are ‘sky diving’, aka ‘jumping out of a perfectly good airplane’. One of them is wearing a helmet mounted video camera. The video of all of those souls rising past them, as they decend at 100mph free fall, should be priceless!
Details to follow…. Film at eleven.
Pacific time me friends. I should be in Princeton B.C. welcoming the Lord in all Her natural splendour by that time!
Oh, wait! Maker Faire is tomorrow!

If you are ANYWHERE near the SF Bay area, this is one of the best shows of the year, I try not to miss it.
