The "Our Climate" iPhone app: causing a disturbance in the force

OurClimate for iPhone - click for details
OurClimate - click for details

The force of growing popularity of the Aegis’ “Our Climate” iPhone app has caused some climate alarmists to circle the wagons and regroup. For example, Joe Romm at Climate Progress is calling for

suggestions for improving the one liners.

…related to John Cook’s alarmist iPhone app.

I think it is telling that they are reacting so visibly and so quickly. They probably were not prepared for such popularity (of the Our Climate App) after the staged smackdown in the Guardian backfired.

See: Climate change denial? There’s an app for that.

Meanwhile the “Our Climate” app continues its surge of downloads and is featured in the Top 40 “New and Notable” Apps on the iTunes frontpage, plus the top 5 category position in many countries:

There are more than 230,000 Apps in the App store – Only 40 Apps are featured in this front page category at any time, so this is a singular achievement and opportunity for the truly skeptical side of the story to be heard.

“Our Climate” is now the Number 1 Weather App in Five iTunes App Stores:

1. Malaysia

1. Uruguay

1. India

1. Hong Kong

1. Brazil

Also number 2 in:

2. Canada

2. Turkey

2. Singapore

Number 3 in:

3. UK

3. Panama

3. Pakistan

And fourth in:

4. USA

Get the app for yourself: http://itunes.apple.com/app/our-climate/id371849150?mt=8

BTW Yes, it DOES work on the iPad !

“Yes, water vapor is the most powerful greenhouse gas. The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere depends only on the temperature of the atmosphere”

The problem with this one is that it isn’t true.
Specific humidity follows the solar cycles closely:

Romm has to train the troops? No free thinkers there I guess, or maybe not well educated in their own cause. It’s pretty sick actually. Typical actions of a propagandist movement.
And I noticed the introduction started with “Progressives should…..”. Do they even know what Progressive means? If I were them, I would not associate to that word in front of even mildly educated people….. Guess he’s “out of the closet”.

It doesn’t seem to be in the top 40 list anymore. Maybe Big AL instructed them to get rid of it. Mind you, its possible that it just got knocked off by another app.

I’d be careful, your app may be deemed by Apple to be a moral threat to children and the easily lead. They don’t give too many reasons when they ban an app.

What is this ‘iphone’ of which you write? All my ips are quite sharp enough thankyou, they don’t need honing.

I love the add for the Ipad App, It’s a shame that that is how the world is today, exaggerating data and misrepresenting trends

Very often this resembles more crusade fought with slogans than a open discussion on issues that are far for being settled.

Welcome to the subject of Climate Science.

Anthony, with all due respect, not everything revolves around the ‘Our Climate’ app. The reason for the Climate Progress post was because Joe is going on vacation so he asked me for a bunch of my recent blog posts that he could post. That was one of the posts I suggested.
That said, I’ve been meaning to thank you for defending me when one of your commenters posted an insulting comment about me. I thought that was decent of you so many thanks!
REPLY: Hi John, Thanks for that info. I note that you make a strong effort to run a clean forum, and I try to return the favor of decency in discussion when I can. Insults help nobody, though a healthy rivalry is always good.
The “Our Climate” app is new, so please don’t begrudge our moment in the sun. We don’t have opportunities like publishing in the Guardian you know. 🙂
While we are sharing info I should mention that this isn’t my app, nor do I earn anything for it in sales or for promoting it. It was developed much like your app with a specialist company.

I wonder how long before they go thru Apple’s management to try to kill it, and substitute their own?
With Gore on the board, I should think right away…

Even ‘the force’ has a way of revealing to ‘the lost’ what may once again be found.
Do not give up so easily as to think those lost souls can’t be shown the real truth of matters.
Faith, have faith: Keep the door open …

I know, it was developed by an Australian company (note a typo in your opening sentence, it’s Aeris). Note that it takes Aussies to put these climate apps together 🙂

John Cook,
While you are being decent, please retract your straw man “rebuttal” to my GRACE article.
I wrote an article questioning GRACE claimed ice loss 700km in the interior of Antarctica, and you devoted a three part “rebuttal” to discussing ice losses on the coast.

I just rated the app full stars and made a comment—I encourage all those who own it and use it to post comments too, ‘cuz the comments section will get flamed by the RC crowd (I can’t wait to see their one liners, assuming, of course, they can limit their vitriol to just one sentence.)

John Cook
Bravo John, you should stop by more often, and I’m not being saecastic.
We need to start opening up the dialogue between the two camps. The sound-bites, name calling, and such needs to stop.
As at all blogs you encounter the occasional troll or extremist but the moderation has been great, IMHO. My experience here has been most rewarding. Many contributors are knowledgable, amicable, and are ready and able to seperate/discuss legitimate issues of science and climate from strawmen and/or ad hom comments of which I’m sure you’re familiar.
Anyway…was impressed with your post thanking AW and thought I’d offer an invite. Take care.

“Meanwhile the “Our Climate” app continues it’s surge of downloads and is featured in the Top 40…”
Should read “its”, not “it’s”. Sorry for picking nits … it’s a personal grammatical pet peeve of mine.
On topic, I would love to see this app ported to the Blackberry.

Congratulations on the #5 position, though I am still waiting for my WUWT book generating option.

While you are all madly trying to power up your electronic gadgets on the new wind powered smart grid,
Iiii will be laying on my polar bear rug by the fire reading WUWT in book form. Oh wait, fires emit CO2 and my incandescent lights will be illegal. So maybe I will be wearing the bearskin, reading my WUWT book, by candlelight.

I do stop by fairly regularly but usually by the time I get here the discussion is already 100’s of comments in. Even this thread was only a few hours old when I got here and there were over 50 comments. You guys are a prolific lot. But I will try to comment more often.

After reading the article and one liners i had a thought, why not have Anthony and John Cook have a debate on the one liners say 1 a week or 2 weeks. What say you Anthony and John?

Read a slew of Romm’s one liners to neutralize critics of cagw. It is the most juvenile stuff I’ve seen anywhere, let alone in a place purporting to be a scientic blog. I fear their power to have a damaging affect greatly diminished if this is the level of discourse we’re dealing with. The shallowness is compounded by the arrogant talking down tone – is it any wonder that ordinary working folks have turned away in droves from this undisguised anti-science anti-human claptrap. It’s worse than we thought!

August 9, 2010 9:51 pm

Should make one for android phones.

Are Americans getting poor? 😉 The Czech Republic is at the top of the highest-ranks table of Our Climate
http://www.appannie.com/our-climate/ranking/#view=best-ranks
because its rank is 83 over here, among all apps. It’s 383 in the U.S. Come on, people, including iPhone non-owners. Create your iTunes account and buy it. 😉
