This morning I contacted Norfolk Constabulary with a view to finding out if they had yet ascertained whether the breach at the Climatic Research Unit was a leak or a hack. I have just received a response which is frankly amazing:
Norfolk Constabulary continues its investigations into criminal offences in relation to a data breach at the University of East Anglia. During the enquiry officers have been working in liaison with the Office of the Information Commissioner and with officers from the National Domestic Extremism Team. The UEA continues to co-operate with the enquiry however major investigations of this nature are of necessity very detailed and as a consequence can take time to reach a conclusion. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.
The National Domestic Extremism Team? Words fail me.

It means that all the secret services of the developed nations must be tracking WUWT closely because it’s the center of the sceptics conspiracy. My, they might all become sceptics reading the discussions here…
Boys, you’re welcome!
REPLY:
Good grief! If they read any of the CRU e-mails, then listened to the MET’s fairy tale of a warm winter, froze their buns off getting to work and then spent the day having to read the comments here they will definitely become skeptics. Unfortunately I have serious doubts that a lot of the pushers of AGW actually believe it. They leave that to the useful idiots.
Anyway welcome and keep your minds open, it’s your pockets they want to pick too.
I would be careful about running down the Norfolk Constabulary. The Police grind slowly but they do grind small. If there has been a leak, they will find the leaker and charge him if there has been a crime. The guilt of this individual will be up to the courts. Thankfully, the police are not yet required to investigate scientific conduct.
Are the alarmists now upgraded to terrorist status?
I have wanted to visit Norfolk for years but I’m afraid someone might mistake me for a tour-orist.
FYI, this is the mandate of the NETCU in the UK.

From their website:
“We support industry, academia and other organisations that have been targeted or could be targeted by extremists, providing security advice, risk assessments and information that can help minimise disruption and keep their employees safe.”
A clue on what the investigation result will be?
Look, you’ve got to think like extremely annoyed government bureaucrats. They don’t know that anything illegal occurred — because a whistleblower may have released the climategate data, and in addition the law is not very clear what can and cannot be done with all this newfangled internet stuff. On the other hand, they hate the hateful thing that was done so strongly that it must have been done by extremists — hence the investigation by the National Domestic Extremism Team. Really, it’s very simple…
NO ONE expects the National Domestic Extremism Team….!!!!!!!
Hmmmm… Wouldn’t an extremist be the one trying to “correct” the historical temperature record with “value-added” data? Or, would it be the sane “deniers” claiming the world is actually round? I guess the question is, Are they investigating the right (or left) extremists?

Left wing extremist/terrorists are known as ‘community organizers’ and get government funding… they do it for the children, after all.

Last sentence in that link makes sense:
Domestic extremist campaigns rarely cause a danger to life, but in some cases the aim is to create a climate of fear.
Climate of fear.
Climate of fear of Climate.
Welcome to 1984, 🙁 just waiting for the cameras in every home.
An extremist is anyone who disagrees with the Ministry of Truth.
Meanwhile, the BBC (in a panic that people may be turning off of warming) put out more BS http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8437703.stm
Wonder how many doughnuts will be consumed before the investigation is finished.
This is the same mob that take pictures of protestors at demonstrations, Big Brotherish dudes.
Such task force is totally normal under a dictatorship. Yeah, that’s right… Gordon Brown was never elected… how long has he been there without a general election?
Well, Phil Jones stepped down, at least temporarily. I’ve heard several slants as to the reason, none of which I know are certain. However, the fact that he has stepped down at all gives the distinct impression he’s done something wrong or has been bounced for bad behavior.
Maybe the police and gumshoes are tired of freezing, too.
The National Domestic Extremism Team was set up primarily to monitor animal rights activists and comprises a team of officers who assist other constabularies.
The National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit is run by ACPO and advises institutions and organisations how to protect themselves against attack from single issue extremists.
Both are closely involved with Special Branch and so by implication the Security Service (MI5)
These people will not be called in to investigate FOI issues. They are there to investigate either the whistleblower or hacker(s).
Animal rights activists have been virtually wiped out over the last three years in the UK through a combination of highly successful infiltration and intelligence gathering by Special Branch and M15. As a result it seems to me like they are now under-employed and looking to keep busy!
Ladies and gentlemen we can safely say that in the eyes of the UK police we are all now ‘single issue extremists’. Sleep well.
Domestic extremist campaigns rarely cause a danger to life, but in some cases the aim is to create a climate of fear.
Is that sort of like State of Fear? So sad that Michael Crichton is not alive to comment on this!
Yes, it’s pure Orwellian Newspeak, meaning the opposite of what it says.
In theory, he is supposed to protect your right to freedom of information.
In practice, he protects the information from people trying to access it.
Could also mean that they are investigating the possibility that the AGW crowd are extremists or showing these tendencies?
Mmmm….National Domestic Extremism Team…..
Dr Bob I agree, I would put money on Briffa. His e-mails indicate he was not happy with the “trick” and there is circumstantial evidence that he was suffering from severe stress, particularly following Steve McIntyre’s investigation.
The National Extremism Tactical Carbon Unit
Quite. Just to re-state it: those who are creating a climate of fear are the Warmist alarmists.

Our chief weapon is fear!
Fear and Surprise….
This incident with the pilfered emails reminds me somewhat of Benjamin Franklin’s involvement with the “Hutchinson Letters” — letters by the British colonial governor which argued that “there must be an abridgment of what are called English Liberties”. Franklin somehow obtained those “stolen” letters and then had the audacity to publish them — an act of heroism, in my book, although many labeled him as a dishonorable thief as a result.
Perhaps once the purloiner of the emails is caught by the “National Domestic Extremism Team”, we should honor that person with “The Hutchinson Award” in memory of Benjamin Franklin and the noble American tradition of openness and transparency in government.
(I’d love to see someone get that award for disclosing the mass of documents about himself that President B. O bama has kept secret.)
