By the time Partly Cloudy skies appear about 3PM Monday, there will be about 4-8″ of snow on the ground in DC.

If Hansen hasn’t left NYC already, I’d say it is doubtful he’ll even make the protest given it is a Monday, and Monday’s are usually pretty bad commutes even without bad weather. Looks like it is going to be a…

I interrupt the snowstorm updates to bring you this pressing issue. Monday, March 2nd 2009 is the date for a scheduled protest by Capitol Climate Action (CCA).

Heavy snow expected at the Nation’s Capitol on Monday
Their website labels it:
Mass civil disobedience at the coal fired power plant in Washington, DC
CCA claims this will be the largest mass civil disobedience for the climate in US history. There is actually a request to wear dress clothes. That seems odd. Is this a target to get young Americans in a vogue protest?
My forecast from this morning can be found here (I will have a new update by this evening). If you go just by the NWS forecast, then snow will range between 5-10 inches with wind gusts over 30 mph. The snowstorm forecast is ironic not only because it falls on the date of this protest, but also because it is a late season event. The normal high for the date in Washington, DC is 51F. What would be worse: Keep the protest on in the snowstorm, or cancel it because of the snowstorm?
The infamous Dr. James Hansen should be there leading the charge. My post last week about 2008 being the coldest year this decade included a reference to Hansen. I wrote, “This is the same man who turned off the air conditioning in the Capitol while speaking about Global Warming on a hot day in 1988.” I also mentioned his exposure of bad data for Russia just this past October. He used September data (a statistically warmer month) in place of cooler October data. This skewed the temperatures upward.
I don’t knock him for his extreme beliefs, but I do disagree with the questionable tactics he uses to get his message across. According to Fox News , he is in hot water since he works for NASA, yet is helping to organize a protest.
It seems like the Climate Crew has had some trouble getting their messages across. It’s almost as if mixed signals are coordinated by nature itself. Marc Marano, Communications Director for the GOP on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) sent out a list of events that seem to follow the Gore Effect. This was labeled by Politico.com as:
The so-called Gore Effect happens when a global warming-related event, or appearance by the former vice president and climate change crusader, Al Gore, is marked by exceedingly cold weather or unseasonably winter weather.
Check out this list courtesy of Marc Marano:
Note: The “Gore Effect” has a long and storied history. What follows is a sampling of how Mother Nature enjoys mocking global warming fear promoters.
1) First October snow since 1922 blankets London as global warming bill debated – October 2008
3) HOUSE HEARING ON ‘WARMING OF THE PLANET’ CANCELED AFTER SNOW/ICE STORM – February 2007
4) NOT AGAIN! DC ‘Snow Advisory’ Issued on Day of Congressional Global Warming Hearing – March 2007
5) Gore decries ‘global warming’ in bitterly cold NYC – December 2006
9) Global warming protest in Maryland frosted with snow – January 2008
10) Global warming rally in the snow – April 2007
11) Snow won’t dampen global-warming rallies – April 2007
13) Global Warming Awareness Walk Braves Snow Storm – March 2007
14) The Gore Effect, Cont. – Gore speaks in Italy during ‘rare’ cold and snow
15) Tracking ‘The Gore Effect’ – Politico November 26,6, 2008
16) Climate protest cancelled ‘due to rain and cold’ – Nov. 23, 2008

From the Twilight Zone, England is developing strategies to deal with the increasing heat:
Government ‘to recommend siestas’ to combat heatwaves
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/weather/4902653/Government-to-recommend-siestas-to-combat-heatwaves.html
Meanwhile in the real world sunspots remain a no-show and the Livingston and Penn Phenomena remains on track for total sunspot succession by 2015. The only way that the insanity in Washington DC is going to end quickly enough to save the Republic, is if we start seeing the winters we had in the good old days.
Mike
After the protest, the protesters (including Dr. Hansen) will retreat to the fossil fuel generated warmth of their car, Latte bar, hotel or emergency room for frostbite.
I wonder how Dr. Hansen’s ivory tower is heated?

That is how communists and anarchists operate, by creating divisions where none exist, and by widening and exploiting those that do. They never build anything lasting. Their only claim to fame is the devastation they leave in their wake, always in the name of “progress.”

But the protest’s so delightful

On a slightly related note, the UK’s Met Office has now decided that we’re in for a bit of a chilly Spring.
“For the UK and western Europe spring this year is likely to be cooler than last year, with mean temperatures either near or below average.”
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/science/creating/monthsahead/seasonal/2009/spring.html
Now, working on their previous predictions for last Summer & Winter, I’d expect a big freeze will be on its way!
I look forwards to the news coverage of the “Warmists” under a good, insulating layer of snow.
I’m an agnostic, but such deliciously ironic timing is almost enough to make me question my own lack of interest in the divine ….
With potential images of a ragtag band of ‘activists’ huddled against freezing winds in a snowy wasteland ….. could this be the turning point when everyone starts to realise actually who it is that still believes the earth is flat ……
I live in Herndon/Reston which is about 35 miles west of DC. At 0929 the snow is just now letting up and the weather radar shows the tail end of the storm is about to pass through Fairfax county. We were supposed to get only about three inches according to the NWS but the storm tracked a bit more to the west so I have about 8 inches.
Downtown DC is practically paralyzed since they have even more snow. The Metro rail system is having problems with snow on the tracks forcing plowing which leads to single-tracking. All of the schools are closed in the surrounding area and it is 28 F with the wind picking up. Tonight is expected to be the lowest temperature ever recorded for this date. Around 15F. Don’t you just love it.
Now I am off to do some snow blowing so I can get to work myself.
Cheers,
John

I’ve added the links for the oline articles. We need someone who knows the system to help us defend it.

Hey, I’m just wondering if Prison Planet has permission to reprint your entire article (http://www.prisonplanet.com/hansen%E2%80%99s-coal-and-global-warming-protest-may-get-snowed-out.html)
REPLY: Yes.
It’s 9:37 am here in Manassas, VA. (about 30 miles SW of DC). The snow has slowed down quite a bit, but the wind is really kicking up. The snow is light and dry so there will be some drifting. It’s really a miserable day to be outside. These people are really going to look silly all frosted up. They better have a few warming huts with plenty of hot cocoa or coffee!!!
About an inch of snow this weekend in Huntsville, AL. 3-4 inches further south in AL.
To paraphrase Kryten, “Who would hold a global warming riot in a snowstorm? Only a yogurt!”
A US President seems to be using civil disobedience to overcome the constraints placed upon him by the separation of powers embodied in the US Constitution.
Not a good sign for the future, I fear.
It is pitiful to watch, the once leading nation of the world, infected by such a noxious psychic disease, which resembles that of the Nazi rise in Germany. Hope you can stop this madness before is too late.
Quote from: http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/8947
“This protest is part of an effort to systematically destroy America by denying it the electricity in needs to exist. Meanwhile, Congress refuses to allow any exploration and drilling for America’s oil and is putting off limits millions of acres of land that potentially is home to vast amounts of coal and oil that will continue to be denied to Americans.
You don’t have to be paranoid or a conspiracy freak to believe that the enemy is inside the gates.”
Again: Pitiful!
Pertinent questions:
Who is funding this demonstration? Soros? Gore with his cap and trade bounty to come?
It smells of government organization, since it is pushing Obama’s program.
Or are they maybe afraid Obama will put the climate on the back burner because of the economy problems and want to give an extra push? 2500 demonstrators are a gnat on an elephant’s ear.
According to Hansen… 2008 was the COLDEST YEAR OF THE MILLENIUM!!!

“BarryW (04:42:05) : just outside of DC… got at least 6-7 inches… snow on all the major arteries… schools are closed… we’ve barely had an inch of snow all winter till now.”
Is this God’s way of laughing?

Looks like snow to me.
Up to a foot of snow piled up in places like Jackson, Tenn., which saw 12.5 inches — the heaviest one-day snowfall there ever.

Speaking of comedy, check out the 2nd of 2 videos from the Heartland Institute, meant to promote the upcoming International Conference on Climate Change, which is being held on March 8-10 in New York City.
Warning, do not try drinking anything while viewing 2nd video. Cleaning a monitor off is bad enough, but damn, keyboards are hard to clean!
Hanson is just the “bell boy”, it’s the President:
http://www.appinsys.com/GlobalWarming/ObamaOutOfTouch.htm
I wonder how long it takes before the American People find out they’ve elected the worst President in the History of the USA.
Wake up people because this Presidents is going to cover up his tracks by “events” and he is moving fast.

Quote from their website article, “We expect 2,500 dedicated activists to stand tall at the Capitol Power Plant”
2,500? Is that all? I could probably get twice as many ‘9/11 truthers’ there inside a couple of weeks. Millions marched against the Iraq war and were utterly ignored and we are supposed to take 2,500 protesters seriously?
So it is not only a deliciously ironic protest against global warming, in the snow… but is it is a pathetically poorly supported one at that!
Smokey (04:32:25) :
“The media will no doubt portray this ridiculous “protest” as a huge success. So someone should take a few pictures of this globaloney rally, to show the truth. I doubt that there will be anywhere near 2,500 idiots freezing their butts off on a work day. Stalinist style posters can’t compete with the reality of frigid temperatures cooling down a global warming protest.”
No Smokey,
Read my post above.
They have selected 12000 people who will be trained to organize protests all over the USA (and outside the USA).
Obama himself is behind the whole deal.

I’m in Atlanta for the past weekend to attend US Mensa’s Annual Colloquium. This year the subject was climate change, and Jim Hansen was the keynote speaker Saturday night. See http://colloq09.us.mensa.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Program7 for all the other speakers – all AGW supporters. I attended mainly out of a sense of duty – I didn’t want Hansen to recruit into his fold a bunch of bright but not all that well informed folks.
His talk was much lower key than I expected. I think he was exhausted, having arrived only half an hour or so before the dinner started, but he never mentioned death trains. I was going to ask if GISS would ever change their data backfilling code to not change decades old reports, but he never got into that arena. There were only one or two other skeptics there, so I figured instead of standing out like a sore thumb and sore loser, I’d let my web pages do the talking, I had several copies to pass out.
Hansen was supposed to speak at the panel discuss Sunday morning, but left early to catch a flight, I assume to Washington, not NYC. There’s a good chance he made it, as the rain changed to snow around 1130 while I was on the train to ATL.
The flight I was booked had been canceled already, the flight I moved to got canceled. There were no other ways to get to NH that day, so I settled for Boston, and that flight got canceled, so I’m at the Westin Airport hotel paying $13 for internet access for the next 24 hours, but it turns out I have to change hotels tonight (there were no available seats for today, but I figured that was no loss.
It’s amazing what 1″ of snow does here – TLS biggest problem is there’s no way they can keep up with the deicing demand.
I’ll have more to say about the colloquium, but have no idea when I’ll have time for it. When I get home, (I think I’ll have to get a bus from BOS to Manchester, and a cab to Lot C at MHT, and then have a foot of snow on the car to deal with), I’m going to have more snow to deal with, work that has piled up, a bill due on Mar 5, etc. Sigh.
At least Heidi Cullen made it home, she lives here.
I thought the GFS models were claiming more cold than the NWS forecast was claiming.
REPLY: Hang in there Ric. Consider this maxim “Snow makes people stupid”. Watch the antics of people in 1″ of snow in ATL and you’ll understand. – Anthony
