By the time Partly Cloudy skies appear about 3PM Monday, there will be about 4-8″ of snow on the ground in DC.
Plus, in New York City, where Jim Hansen would likely depart from, they also have a Winter Storm Warning in effect to 6PM Monday with forecast of:

If Hansen hasn’t left NYC already, I’d say it is doubtful he’ll even make the protest given it is a Monday, and Monday’s are usually pretty bad commutes even without bad weather. Looks like it is going to be a…

I interrupt the snowstorm updates to bring you this pressing issue. Monday, March 2nd 2009 is the date for a scheduled protest by Capitol Climate Action (CCA).

Heavy snow expected at the Nation’s Capitol on Monday
Their website labels it:
Mass civil disobedience at the coal fired power plant in Washington, DC
CCA claims this will be the largest mass civil disobedience for the climate in US history. There is actually a request to wear dress clothes. That seems odd. Is this a target to get young Americans in a vogue protest?
My forecast from this morning can be found here (I will have a new update by this evening). If you go just by the NWS forecast, then snow will range between 5-10 inches with wind gusts over 30 mph. The snowstorm forecast is ironic not only because it falls on the date of this protest, but also because it is a late season event. The normal high for the date in Washington, DC is 51F. What would be worse: Keep the protest on in the snowstorm, or cancel it because of the snowstorm?
The infamous Dr. James Hansen should be there leading the charge. My post last week about 2008 being the coldest year this decade included a reference to Hansen. I wrote, “This is the same man who turned off the air conditioning in the Capitol while speaking about Global Warming on a hot day in 1988.” I also mentioned his exposure of bad data for Russia just this past October. He used September data (a statistically warmer month) in place of cooler October data. This skewed the temperatures upward.
I don’t knock him for his extreme beliefs, but I do disagree with the questionable tactics he uses to get his message across. According to Fox News , he is in hot water since he works for NASA, yet is helping to organize a protest.
It seems like the Climate Crew has had some trouble getting their messages across. It’s almost as if mixed signals are coordinated by nature itself. Marc Marano, Communications Director for the GOP on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) sent out a list of events that seem to follow the Gore Effect. This was labeled by Politico.com as:
The so-called Gore Effect happens when a global warming-related event, or appearance by the former vice president and climate change crusader, Al Gore, is marked by exceedingly cold weather or unseasonably winter weather.
Check out this list courtesy of Marc Marano:
Note: The “Gore Effect” has a long and storied history. What follows is a sampling of how Mother Nature enjoys mocking global warming fear promoters.
1) First October snow since 1922 blankets London as global warming bill debated – October 2008
3) HOUSE HEARING ON ‘WARMING OF THE PLANET’ CANCELED AFTER SNOW/ICE STORM – February 2007
4) NOT AGAIN! DC ‘Snow Advisory’ Issued on Day of Congressional Global Warming Hearing – March 2007
5) Gore decries ‘global warming’ in bitterly cold NYC – December 2006
9) Global warming protest in Maryland frosted with snow – January 2008
10) Global warming rally in the snow – April 2007
11) Snow won’t dampen global-warming rallies – April 2007
13) Global Warming Awareness Walk Braves Snow Storm – March 2007
14) The Gore Effect, Cont. – Gore speaks in Italy during ‘rare’ cold and snow
15) Tracking ‘The Gore Effect’ – Politico November 26,6, 2008
16) Climate protest cancelled ‘due to rain and cold’ – Nov. 23, 2008

AnonyMoose (19:15:39) :
Did I read somewhere that the problem is not that the sea is rising, but that these islands are sinking?
“All islands erode, but in this case you’re referring to the Maldives. When someone went there and examined the islands, they found that sea level actually declined there several decades ago”.
AnonyMoose,
You are not correct with tour statement that all islands erode.
For example, Coral Islands keep on growing.
There are also many sea islands that grow because the sea and the wind wash huge amounts of sand at the beaches.
In the “East Sea” coastlines and islands are rising at a rate of 1 cm per year in response to the melted icecaps from the latest glaciation.
Than we have volcanic islands where erosion does not get a chance because a continuous flow of lava.
In regard to the Maldives you are 100% correct.
The sea level is fairly constant due to ocean temperatures and precipitation.
The only danger to the Maldives is a Tsunami.
If the President and his population plan to evacuate the Islands we’ll have a nice opportunity to buy some nice sea resorts for little money.
“We are now treating the Earth’s atmosphere as an open sewer”

Oh, snap! Karma strikes again!
First the warmist satellite bites it in the antarctic, then the warmist Washington DC protest gets snowed out. . .
You can’t make up stuff like this!
Now all we need is some locusts. ..
A swarm of mutated, arctic, vampire snow locusts… (very alarming indeed)
From the FAQ section of the Capitol Climate Action web site
“While many participants in the Capitol Climate Action will choose to engage in peaceful acts of civil disobedience, many people will voice their support for these issues in other ways. In general, our intent is to block off access to the Capitol Power Plant by surrounding the entrances, peacefully refuse to leave when asked, and safely disrupt its operations for the day. If by doing so we risk arrest, so be it. We will reflect the growing global movement that is not quietly asking for, but demanding, climate justice.”
http://www.capitolclimateaction.org/?page_id=75#q6
60’s language :
“We will reflect the growing global movement that is not quietly asking for, but demanding, climate justice.”
http://www.capitolclimateaction.org/?page_id=75#q6
“If you are a minor and you do choose to get arrested, please make sure you fill out a Minor Jail Support form …. ”
http://www.capitolclimateaction.org/?page_id=75#q11
This is the same way it happened in the 60’s. If it follows the same pattern there will be more protests coming. And the police presence will also grow. If the protests continue from there then will come military presence. And if the pattern of the 60’s continues protesters will push limits in hopes of not just getting arrested but of getting shot.
I hope none of this pans out and I’m just having a moment of irrationality and not a moment of clarity.
What do we want?……………..Higher energy bills!
When do we want em?……….Now!
Please Sir….may I pay some more?
Yes ,indeed it is snowing in DC.It is snowing in Connecticutand I am submitting this comment at 1:16 AM Monday.
But even better, winds from the north-northwest at 20-25 mph with possible gust to 35 mph. That’s pretty windy and since lows are forecast at 18 degrees F, the WIND-Chill is gonna make for some pretty cold conditions. Frostbite is not a pleasant thing. Wonder if the DC hospitals are going to be prepared for some cases tomorrow.
News Reports mention that Maryland is having a colder than usual winter.
Better bundle up for safety protesters!
What will be interesting will be the spin they’ll publish after the event, no matter how badly it goes they can’t let anyone know that it wasn’t a total success.
I predict plenty of stock phrases including the following:
“success” or “big success” (even if canceled or only a few dozen show up)
“largest ever event”
“sent a message to” (multiple choice: legislators, government, industry, the people)

Let him without faith cast the first snowball. I wonder if the rally will end up in a huge snowball fight. “World’s biggest snowball fight – March 2 2009, Captiol Climate Rally, Washington DC, USA” would look good in the Guinness Book of Records.
If Hansen shows up for the protest, he should be fired from his job right there, for treason.
“I can’t understand why there aren’t rings of young people blocking bulldozers and preventing them from constructing coal-fired power plants.”
– Al Gore
Because you can’t go out and cut all the firewood you want anymore. Those young people are smarter than Gore gives them credit for: They know what keeps them from becoming Popsicles in the Winter and Baked Potatoes in the Summer. We can’t all afford a luxury mansion with millions in solar panels installed.
The young kids of today don’t have it so good, and they get what will happen if the power goes out.
A little empathy for the fertile young minds that will be gathering tomorrow if there is a major winter event.
Cognitive dissonance:
“The tension of dissonance motivates us to change either our behavior or our belief in order to avoid a distressing feeling. The more important the issue and the greater the discrepancy between behavior and belief the higher the magnitude of dissonance we will feel.” http://www.afirstlook.com/docs/cogdiss.pdf
Maybe Al will offer some counseling.
Just want truth… (22:02:33) :
The difference is that Obama is on their side, whereas Kennedy was assassinated soon after taking the reins.
As a cold and snowy WEATHER event in D.C. coincides with this funny protest, I predict that little of the endeavors by Capitol Climate Action and similar AGW believers will be publicized in the media at this time – purposely ignored because it does not conduce any fear. Come Spring or Summer when the Alarmists stage a similar event during a warm day; the headlines of the typical media sources will trumpet: “ Warm day confirms that the CLIMATE is changing and the actions of these AGW people are clearly justified..”…. or something similar…
Ummm, snow in the photos, no problem … a little Photoshopping here and there will change that snow into some hot summer, brown dry grass.

lol.
I understood maybe three words at your gistemp link, but I would like to thank you for all the effort and knowledge you are putting into this work. Maybe the rest of us will yet have a realistic view of what Hansen is really doing thanks to you.
-C’mon don’t you know by now it’s “simply weather”.
-Also it’s NOT snow it’s simply “soft hail”.
-Actually snow is a sign of global warming I mean climate change.
-Also it’s totally in line with what the models predicted.
Etc, etc

The camera seems to be having trouble focusing, due to snowflakes passing the lens maybe? The rooftop flags are flying strongly, and it looks like the snow is settling on the roads.

Please fill it out with detail, like the list of links in this article, and defend the page from deletion or complaints.
I added the list of articles, but haven’t hyperlinked them, and deleted the deletion notice. But someone has deleted the discussion page. How do we defend it?
Is it me, or does the capitolclimateaction.org website look like something straight out of the old Soviet Union?
Is it too much to hope for mass frostbite among the protesters?
C’mon Folks,
you think Hansen, Gore et al would care if you make fun of them?
You make incredible science, debunk, evidence, data, reason….,
Think “dark middle ages” …
They set the agenda, we (reason) have to respond. Make a difference?
Nope. The die has set. God does ply dice. They are the Gods.
(No, I’m not religious, I’m atheist….)
Washington DC forecast for Monday:
precipitation 80% (snow)
temperatures -3/-11 °C
