By the time Partly Cloudy skies appear about 3PM Monday, there will be about 4-8″ of snow on the ground in DC.
Plus, in New York City, where Jim Hansen would likely depart from, they also have a Winter Storm Warning in effect to 6PM Monday with forecast of:
WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST MONDAY

If Hansen hasn’t left NYC already, I’d say it is doubtful he’ll even make the protest given it is a Monday, and Monday’s are usually pretty bad commutes even without bad weather. Looks like it is going to be a…

I interrupt the snowstorm updates to bring you this pressing issue. Monday, March 2nd 2009 is the date for a scheduled protest by Capitol Climate Action (CCA).

Heavy snow expected at the Nation’s Capitol on Monday
Their website labels it:
Mass civil disobedience at the coal fired power plant in Washington, DC
CCA claims this will be the largest mass civil disobedience for the climate in US history. There is actually a request to wear dress clothes. That seems odd. Is this a target to get young Americans in a vogue protest?
My forecast from this morning can be found here (I will have a new update by this evening). If you go just by the NWS forecast, then snow will range between 5-10 inches with wind gusts over 30 mph. The snowstorm forecast is ironic not only because it falls on the date of this protest, but also because it is a late season event. The normal high for the date in Washington, DC is 51F. What would be worse: Keep the protest on in the snowstorm, or cancel it because of the snowstorm?
The infamous Dr. James Hansen should be there leading the charge. My post last week about 2008 being the coldest year this decade included a reference to Hansen. I wrote, “This is the same man who turned off the air conditioning in the Capitol while speaking about Global Warming on a hot day in 1988.” I also mentioned his exposure of bad data for Russia just this past October. He used September data (a statistically warmer month) in place of cooler October data. This skewed the temperatures upward.
I don’t knock him for his extreme beliefs, but I do disagree with the questionable tactics he uses to get his message across. According to Fox News , he is in hot water since he works for NASA, yet is helping to organize a protest.
It seems like the Climate Crew has had some trouble getting their messages across. It’s almost as if mixed signals are coordinated by nature itself. Marc Marano, Communications Director for the GOP on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) sent out a list of events that seem to follow the Gore Effect. This was labeled by Politico.com as:
The so-called Gore Effect happens when a global warming-related event, or appearance by the former vice president and climate change crusader, Al Gore, is marked by exceedingly cold weather or unseasonably winter weather.
Check out this list courtesy of Marc Marano:
Note: The “Gore Effect” has a long and storied history. What follows is a sampling of how Mother Nature enjoys mocking global warming fear promoters.
1) First October snow since 1922 blankets London as global warming bill debated – October 2008
3) HOUSE HEARING ON ‘WARMING OF THE PLANET’ CANCELED AFTER SNOW/ICE STORM – February 2007
4) NOT AGAIN! DC ‘Snow Advisory’ Issued on Day of Congressional Global Warming Hearing – March 2007
5) Gore decries ‘global warming’ in bitterly cold NYC – December 2006
9) Global warming protest in Maryland frosted with snow – January 2008
10) Global warming rally in the snow – April 2007
11) Snow won’t dampen global-warming rallies – April 2007
13) Global Warming Awareness Walk Braves Snow Storm – March 2007
14) The Gore Effect, Cont. – Gore speaks in Italy during ‘rare’ cold and snow
15) Tracking ‘The Gore Effect’ – Politico November 26,6, 2008
16) Climate protest cancelled ‘due to rain and cold’ – Nov. 23, 2008

“thingsbreak” – I took a peek, not much of interest.
How does its traffic compare to WUWT?
On the Gore Effect: He should cook up a poster that says “We’re looking for a few good Snowmen”.
So, hop on your Popsickle and ski on down.
We’ve even got snow forecast for Georgia.
Out here in Calif., we like to think of it as an “Easter Surprise”.

First, global cooling greets demonstrators, then this:
Capitol power plant dims clean energy hopes
AP – Monday, March 2
WASHINGTON – As Congress tries to clean up the nation’s energy sources and cut gases blamed for global warming, it is struggling to do so in its own backyard.
The Capitol Power Plant, a 99-year-old facility that heats and cools the hallowed halls of Congress, still burns coal and accounts for one-third of the legislative branch’s greenhouse gas emissions. For a decade, lawmakers have attempted to clean it up.
But Congress is running out of options to make the plant fully green. Also, there are questions about whether it can afford to keep paying to use the extra natural gas, which burns cleaner than coal.
The plant’s story is one that is likely to play out across the United States as Congress looks to limit greenhouse gases and require more of the country’s energy to come from wind, solar and other renewable sources.
So if Congress cannot act locally, as the environmental slogan goes, how can it begin to think globally?

The suspicious bits are highlighted near the bottom under ‘let the games begin’. There is something particularly delicious about the thought that maybe Hansen “believes his own BS” and it getting hoisted on it…

Is it just me? Over the past few years I have read many, many, blog comments and I have noticed that alarmists seem to share a common feature, that being no sense of humor whatsoever. They really are a dour lot. Is there a psychologist around who could shed some light on this observation?.
If I had to make a choice of being stuck in a lift with an alarmist or a realist, I’d always choose the latter…and NOT just because of their climate views!
I feel strongly that we should protest the sun. I’m going to stand in my back yard with a sign that says, “Be Cool”… pointed at the sun.
I am just LMAO. I keep my fingers crossed.
Hahahahaha!!! poetry, pure political poetry!
Global warming demonstration cancelled by cold weather!
What is worse for the “cause”? To cancel the demonstration due to cold weather or ghold the demonstration in snow and cold?
Aha – I see you have already asked the rhetorical question, Anthony!!
I try my best to believe James Hansen genuinely believes in what he does (even though I think he has lost the plot). I hope he chooses to prove to the world that he’s not just a cynic ruthlessly exploiting the global warming game for personal benefit, for fame and fortune.
What would prove it me that he really is a believer is if he leads the parade wearing Bermuda shorts and a Hawaiian Shirt and sandals, and carrying a pool floaty (for that pesky rising sea level). Oh, and don’t forget the hat to keep off the beating sun.
Just as the Forth Crusade leaders believed God would protect them from the rising Nile floodwaters, Hansen needs to have faith that catastrophic global warming will prevail over finicky winter weather. After all, as we all know, the prevailing climate is very static and easily predicted, so he has no reason not to stick with Plan A.
On the other hand, as the Crusaders in the Nile Delta found to their detriment, while absolute faith may be a wonderful thing, it’s a good idea to throw in some commonsense as well!
Make that the “Fourth” Crusade. lol

Where are the models when you need them? I suspect Hansen ran a model run and it told him “Sunny, Clear and 85F” … ROFLMAO …
The heating degree days for Washington, DC shows that the winter season ’08-’09 thus far is 23 percent colder compared to last year, and 3.6 percent colder than the 30-year average. And that data is a week old, so of course does not include this current storm. It will be worse when the data comes out in a week or so.
Maybe Hansen should pick a year to protest when it is actually warmer than usual?
Here’s a couple of contradictory thought.
[1] Man made emissions of CO2 cause both global warming and global cooling…
[2] Cap and Trade schemes will lower the emission of CO2
Assuming that Hansen shows up in Washington tomorrow, it would be interesting if we could check and see if he’s on the time card for a day of ‘work’ at NASA.
I am understanding what you mean. I think I have already begun to do this without even realizing it. More often I find myself simply rolling my eyes and ignoring the individual that makes an AGW comment to me. With no conscious effort, they simply become discredited and not worth effort effort to acknowledge. .. kind of a “what ever…” type of moment.
BTW: They are saying on the news, as I am writing this, that DC and the East coast will be getting the worst storm of the year tonight and tomorrow. still .. ROFLMAO ..

I guess this explains why so many posts sound the same same guy differnt ID ?
Any word on how Hansen is getting to Washington? Amtrak? His car? Horse and buggy?
I would contribute money to a gumshoe to have him followed to see what “his” carbon footprint is.
If Hansen and co. really believed in this stuff, they would be buying up property in places like Hudson Bay. Imagine the opportunity to lock up the next vactionland mecca at rock bottom prices.

Thingsbreak wrote: “Nothing is going to satisfy people who believe 7 mutually contradictory things about climate change.”
What could this sentence mean?
Let’s look at some IPCC “contradictions” (areas where the observed facts contradict the IPCC claims):
Contradiction #1:
IPCC projects global warming at a rate of 0.2C per decade in the early 21st century; so far the first 8 years of the 21st century have shown cooling at an average rate of around 0.1C per decade. Oops!
Contradiction #2:
IPCC states that the rate of sea level rise has increased in the latter part of the 20th century, switching from tide gauge records to satellite altimetry; the tide gauge record shows a slight decrease in sea level rise in the second half of the 20th century, as comapred to the first half. Hmm…
Contradiction #3:
IPCC states that changes in solar irradiance since 1750 are estimated to cause a radiative forcing of only 0.12 W/m^2, equivalent to a net warming of around 0.02C; several studies by solar scientists conclude that the 20th century warming caused by the unusually high level of solar activity is around 0.35C. Ouch!
Contradiction #4:
IPCC states that the warmth of the last half century is unusual in at least the previous 1,300 years, ignoring overwhelming physical and historical evidence of a warmer global Medieval Warm Period. Huh?
Contradiction #5:
IPCC claims that the satellite temperature record has shown a faster rate of tropospheric warming than that at the surface, confirming the anthropogenic cause of warming; both the satellite and radiosonde record show less warming than the surface record. Oops!
Contradiction #6:
IPCC models all assume a strongly positive feedback from clouds with warming, resulting in 1.3C of the total assumed 2xCO2 climate sensitivity of 3.2C; actual physical observations show a strongly negative net feedback from clouds of around the same order of magnitude; correcting the 2xCO2 climate sensitivity for this factor brings it to around 0.6 to 0.8C, rather than 3.2C. Ouch!
Contradiction #7:
IPCC staes confidently that the upward distortion of the surface temperature record due to the urban heat island effect has a negligible influence of less than 0.006C per decade; many studies from all over the world show that the UHI influence is thirty to fifty times as great as claimed by IPCC. Oh, oh!
There are many more, but I’ll just list these seven to start with…

Let’s be clear. The reason there are so many people who are willing followers and participants in this AGW crusade is that global warming is the perfect massive vehicle in which to advocate, promote and fund many liberal causes.
Here in Oregon there is essentially a 100% support from every elected and activist Democrats and other liberals. You can’t find a single one not completely convinced and on board.
Everything, including smart growth, rail transit, taxes, energy, Dams, property rights, ocean dead zones, forest practices on and and on has hitched it’s cause to the AGW train, for years now.
We have a local commissioner who tried to include a “health and environmental justice” mandate into a bridge design to make sure it complies with CO2 reduction objectives.
And limited only by their imaginations, they are piling on more every day
with new observation attributed to AGW .
So much so that’s it’s now impossible for them to ever face reality and risk a backlash against their many causes.
Yet when any skeptic happens to point to some impressive cold and snow as a bit curious these same attributers-of-all-things-to-global warming quickly lecture about how wrong it is to make any connection.
“Weather is not climate” comes from the same alarmists who have cited Hurricane Katrina as evidence of Global Warming.
The AGW crusade has become a massive coalescing of all things left wing.
Therefore it no longer matters if AGW itself goes missing.
Sir Winston Churchill said;
“If you are not a socialist when you are young, you have no heart. If you are still a socialist when you are old, you have no brain.”
I guess most of those taking part in the demo will be young and rather gullible but have therir hearts in the right place. I also guess that most of them don’t learn history and are unaware that climatically we have been this way before.

200BC-300AD – the Romans came, saw and conquered Britain. Then planted grapes.
300AD-800AD – The dark ages! Everyone went home and sat by their fires.
800AD-1300AD – Away they went again, conquering and planting more grapes in the British Midlands.
1300AD-1800AD – Search for warmer climes out west. Sitting in front of the fires at home.
