By the time Partly Cloudy skies appear about 3PM Monday, there will be about 4-8″ of snow on the ground in DC.

Plus, in New York City, where Jim Hansen would likely depart from, they also have a Winter Storm Warning in effect to 6PM Monday with forecast of:

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST MONDAY

If Hansen hasn’t left NYC already, I’d say it is doubtful he’ll even make the protest given it is a Monday, and Monday’s are usually pretty bad commutes even without bad weather. Looks like it is going to be a…

More on the DC weather story form Justin Berk, Baltimore Weather Examiner

I interrupt the snowstorm updates to bring you this pressing issue.  Monday, March 2nd 2009 is the date for a scheduled protest by Capitol Climate Action (CCA).

Heavy snow expected at the Nation’s Capitol on Monday

Their website labels it:

Mass civil disobedience at the coal fired power plant in Washington, DC

CCA claims this will be the largest mass civil disobedience for the climate in US history.  There is actually a request to wear dress clothes.  That seems odd.  Is this a target to get young Americans in a vogue protest?

My forecast from this morning can be found here (I will have a new update by this evening). If you go just by the NWS forecast, then snow will range between 5-10 inches with wind gusts over 30 mph.  The snowstorm forecast is ironic not only because it falls on the date of this protest, but also because it is a late season event.  The normal high for the date in Washington, DC is 51F. What would be worse: Keep the protest on in the snowstorm, or cancel it because of the snowstorm?

The infamous Dr. James Hansen should be there leading the charge.  My post last week about 2008 being the coldest year this decade included a reference to Hansen.  I wrote, “This is the same man who turned off the air conditioning in the Capitol while speaking about Global Warming on a hot day in 1988.”  I also mentioned his exposure of bad data for Russia just this past October.  He used September data (a statistically warmer month) in place of cooler October data.  This skewed the temperatures upward.

I don’t knock him for his extreme beliefs, but I do disagree with the questionable tactics he uses to get his message across.  According to  Fox News , he is in hot water since he works for NASA, yet is helping to organize a protest.

It seems like the Climate Crew has had some trouble getting their messages across.  It’s almost as if mixed signals are coordinated by nature itself. Marc Marano,  Communications Director for the GOP on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) sent out a list of events that seem to follow the Gore Effect.  This was labeled by Politico.com as:

The so-called Gore Effect happens when a global warming-related event, or appearance by the former vice president and climate change crusader, Al Gore, is marked by exceedingly cold weather or unseasonably winter weather.

Check out this list courtesy of Marc Marano:

Note: The “Gore Effect” has a long and storied history. What follows is a sampling of how Mother Nature enjoys mocking global warming fear promoters.

Robert van der Veeke (14:06:25) :
Come to think of it, about a year ago a lot more people protested against Sciencetology, and year later they still do and in greater numbers.

Did you catch the part when the emcee introduced James Hansen and then apologized, explaining that he didn’t know why, but whenever he introduces James Hansen something makes him want to call Hansen a Scientologist, when really he is a climatoligist.
I sure hope someone has a copy of the video.

If you listen to these guys, the way they say a company CEO should be thrown in prison for providing energy, it is really terrible. It is like when the Leninists were killing entrepreneurs or even nowadays when Russian businessmen are killed so that a rival can move into his market. A Power Shift in other words by use of force.

Bear also in mind the conflicting interests of the socialist ex-Mayor of London Ken Livingstone.
He instituted the Congestion Charge on Central London to force drivers to pay to enter their own city by car. The charge was implemented to “lower traffic, clean up the air, lower carbon emissions, and get Londoners to use public transport”. There was a promise that the money raised by the Congestion Charge was going to improve public transport.
Did it? No. Did it lower traffic congestion? No.
But Ken Livingstone did invite Hugo Chavez to a Socialist Conference to herald the comin of worldwide socialism.
Livingstone then attempted to enter a little business arrangement with Chavez. Red Ken promised Londoners that cheap oil from Venezuela would keep gas prices down, but at what cost?
Livingstone was in the process of hiking the Congestion Charge from £10 a day to at least £25 a day, but lost the Mayor’s Election to Boris Johnson (a global warming skeptic who claimed it is a daft religion but has since embraced some green language) before he could increase the cost of living and working in London.
The money Livingstone was going to raise from taxing Londoners was going to fuel the spread of socialist dictatorships in South America.
Currently Red Ken is talking up a bid to run as mayor again. A socialist’s thirst for power never fades away.

Kennedy also went on a quick rant about how evil coal was, and all the “destruction” it causes. Alluding to how entire mountains are leveled and as much explosive energy is released mining coal as a hiroshima bomb every week (as I recall). He went on to say that coal mining needs to be shut down.
I’m sure all the union coal miners that voted for President Obama on the basis of his support of unions and his comments on clean coal are beginning to wonder what they voted into office. I am sure that rant will play well in the coal field country.

OK, I agree, those people are a bunch of {snip, snip, snip, snips!} but Charles the moderator is right. Political discussion does have a place in some of these threads, but ad hominems, appeals to authority and snarkiness over misspellings and splint infinitives do not. Well, I’m no scientist. But I live in the Washington region and am looking at all this snow first-hand. Cleaned a bunch of it off my car. Was thinking about baking bread on a cold day like this.
Then I learned that the yeast releases CO2. What a bummer.

From reading the comments it looks like most of the people there were college age. They probably felt like they are doing something good in the world by being there. And I understand that. I wouldn’t want to even give them a condemning look. I don’t think they are the type to force the issue and shut down the power plant. They probably had most innocent intentions. They’re just kids, probably good kids!
I was looking at things leading up to this and it had the feel of what I saw in the 60’s. This turned out to be nothing like it.
But I also think there were a few extremist types there, a small number. They are the ones who are trouble.

I saw a comment from Anthony some days ago saying he feels the energy spent exchanging comments with trolls would better be used writing to a congressman. True. I also saw him talking about the Steig paper in Nature that “Barring their acceptance of publishing a rebuttal, perhaps we should consider a full page ad in Nature. I think we could garner enough financial support from readers to make that happen. – Anthony”. Also a good idea. I think many, if not all, of us here want to inform the public about the real science of AGW.
But I have an idea that I have been mulling over for some time : I think that commenters at WUWT, in a joint venture with commenters ClimateAudit, (if they wanted to) and any other blog (if they wanted to) could purchase a 90 minute block in prime time of one of the big four t.v. channels and air “The Great Global Warming Swindle” in its entirety.
It might be an exciting project for all of us to work toward!

Note to MikeE
Yeah. The Greenpeace spokesman was lying about this year being warmer than any other. All 4 temperature records show that there were 8 to 9 warmer years than 2008.
All records also show that it has been cooling at an average rate of 0.1C per decade since 2001, even though IPCC predicted it should be warming at twice that rate and human CO2 emissions are at an all-time high.

To Charles of Moderation
I am confused by at least SOME fo your snippage.
The first snip connected Mr. Joel Shore obliquely to a Hollywood persona (note that I didn’t say “actor”) of the same surname name. If you’ve see any of his movies, you would agree that that comment DESERVED a [snip]. Mea Culpa.
HOWEVER, the next-to-last of the [snip]s referred to “AGW acolytes”.
I REALLY can’t see anything wrong with that one
ac·o·lyte (k-lt)
n.
1. One who assists the celebrant in the performance of liturgical rites.
2. A devoted follower or attendant.
Continuing in the same vein, the last [snip] referred to “The Faithful (regardless of sect)”.
What exactly ARE the ground rules, please?
Apparently I may refer to AGW as a quasi-religion (as others have repeated done), but NOT refer to the practitioners as “acolytes” or compare them to The Fatihful (regardless of sect)?
If as I suspect the Hollywood reference put you off your feed and unleased your inner snipper, that’s understandable (especially if you paid good money for one of them movies). But I really don’t want to offend anyone, just annoy.
So to paraphrase the Warren Court, what ARE the community standards?
Reply: Your analysis is mostly correct. But simply put, do not use pejoratives against other posters. The actor reference may have been meant to be funny, but in the context of your other statements it was a piling on of insults. It is true, that reference to AGW as a religion in general are usually allowed, but when this concept is directed at other posters it is an attempt to cast the opponent as un-thinking believer and in this context is not allowed. We are trying to make this site a place where serious respectful discussions can take place. Despite its usual allowance, the AGW as religion meme has been beaten to death, and at some future date may not be allowed at all.
And yes, I’ve read Crichton’s essay on the subject. ~ charles the moderator.

From Jennifer Marohasy posting about the demonstration and…counter protest.
# Comment from: jennifer March 3rd, 2009 at 9:45 am
from Myron Ebell in Washington:
“I was out there at our counter-protest today and it was cold. There were 6 or 7 hundred anti-coal protesters and about thirty of us. We spent a couple hundred bucks, they spent a few hundred thousand, and we got a significant fraction of the media.
“I’d like to do a cost benefit comparison of them and us using carbon dioxide emissions as the unit of value.
“A highlight was the Greenpeace truck and trailer with a big solar panel on top. It was covered with snow, so they had to use their generator for the sound system.”
from http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/03/02/morano-mocks-deadly-storm/
“Last night, Sen. Jim Inhofe’s office responded to forecasts of a dangerous storm with mockery.
“A winter storm sweeping up the East Coast with rain, snow, and ice has caused 350 car crashes in New Jersey, a 15-mile-long traffic jam in North Carolina, and four deaths from car accidents in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Long Island. Hundreds of thousands of households lost power from Georgia to Maine.
“Marc Morano, Sen. Inhofe’s environmental communications director, mocked the threat of the storm by pointing out it would take place at the same time as a protest of fossil-fueled global warming in Washington D.C.”

March 2, 2009 6:18 pm

Ron de Haan,
Interesting articles. I enjoyed the report of only “five hundred” protesters. Since there were over 90 organizations listed as attending, that doesn’t leave very many protesting from the general public. Probably several from each organization who attended had their expenses paid by one of the dozens of interlocking Soros organizations, since that’s how Soros has always operated.
The article said flights were delayed, including Pelosi’s, and that’s why she couldn’t attend. But read between the lines:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi… cancelled her appearance at the rally because her flight to Washington was cancelled.

Pelosi’s flight was canceled, eh? But later her office changed that to ‘delayed.’ And they refused to say whether she took public transportation, or her own jet [which in itself tells you the answer].
Apparently the writer is unaware that the Speaker of the House has her own private, taxpayer-paid jetliner. Since a little snow wouldn’t stop her U.S. Air Force pilots, the message is pretty clear: Pelosi was hiding out from the rally.
Same with House Select Energy Independence and Global Warming Chairman Edward Markey [D-Craven], who canceled his appearance due to the weather… but later on he changed his story, claiming it was a “scheduling conflict.” So the rally organizers were given the *ahem* cold shoulder. Obviously Markey was hiding out from them just like Pelosi. So, where was Markey? He says that’s a secret. Ice fishing, maybe?
It’s funny listening to all the spin from politicians trying to back and fill. And it’s sad, too, that the few hundred kids who showed up to shiver for Pelosi and Markey were surely somebody else’s useful tools.

“It is true, that reference to AGW as a religion in general are usually allowed, but when this concept is directed at other posters it is an attempt to cast the opponent as un-thinking believer and in this context is not allowed.”
Seems to be a fair criteria, and right. It’s going to be hard to find a fair criteria to eliminate all references to AGW as a religion though. If you wanted to do that it may be that you may have to say something like “WUWT understands the vein of thought that AGW is analogous to a religion but WUWT has chosen to not follow that line of thought in what it allows in it’s comment threads. Instead WUWT would rather have comments more closely related to data, scientific findings, and the sociology of AGW”.
But again, I think it’s going to be hard to eliminate any reference to religion since some of AGW is taken by pure faith, blind belief, like some of the teachings in a religion.
Michael Crichton compares environmentalism to religion. Maybe seeing what he has to say about it will help WUWT decide how to handle talk of religion and AGW.

Confused…no real answers expected. Media musing.
Sort of keeping an eye on the protest today. Seems it was a dud with perhaps a few hundred actual protesters. There is almost nothing in the MSM on the event. (Certainly not on the MSM webpages thus far.)
Is that because it was a de facto flop and therefore no sensational story to report? The poor attendance goes counter to the MSM’s efforts to promote the concepts of consensus, massive concern, massive public support, urgent action needed … ad nauseum. The BIG story should have been the lack of attendees right?
Had there been (say) 20,000 protesters, would it have been on the six o’clock news? A big attendance would have meant that there was yet another sensational story to report in support of AGW. Just musing aloud.
