I don’t know if any of you readers have ever experienced temperatures that are down to -50°F, but it is painful to endure.
From the NWS WFSO in Caribou, Maine, a report of a new statewide low record event. (h/t to Joe Bastardi via Jeff L). Unlike the WSFO in Chicago, which wants to throw out a statewide record low temperature because they don’t seem to trust the quality control on an AWOS station calibrated the day before in Rochelle, the WSFO in Caribou seems ready to consider the temperature recorded by a USGS gage. Ah, consistency.

Dan Lee (05:21:30) :
I’ve spent the two years since then re-arranging my entire worldview, utterly thunderstruck at the depth of the deception, the blatant manipulation of data, the cynicism of the politicians, and especially the fawning gullibility of the media who are supposed to be the public’s eyes and ears on what’s going on in the world.
Yep, hear, hear. First comes the shock (that you’ve been lied to, by people you trusted), then awe (at the size and extent of the whole thing), and then what can only be described as RAGE, along with utter frustration. Ameliorated to some extent at least, by the existence of sites like this, of course.
What I’ve never gotten is the attitude of the media in all this. Journalists make names for themselves by exposing such shenanigans to the light, but only a few have dared to challenge this one.
I’ve been puzzled about that, too. It’s probably a combination of things. It’s called the “liberal media” for a reason, and AGW seems a good fit, at least on the surface. They’ve bought the meme that being pro-AGW and pro-environment are one and the same thing, hook line and sinker. Plus, alarmism sells, so there’s been a financial incentive to hype this thing. In a very big way, the MSM is part and parcel to the AGW bandwagon, and to admit that they have played a large part in the biggest deception in history will be extremely difficult. They surely have damaged their credibility at this point probably irreparably.
Bruce Cobb
In addition to the liberal media -many of whom have a social agenda which makes them want to believe in AGW-I have often wondered how many of the Climate scientists and personalities also have this aspect of their character. James Hansen certainly does, Al Gore says he does, anyone else? Dr Mann, Gavin Schmidt?

@Garacka
Obama’s ineligibility to be president? How is that kool-aid tasting?
@everyone else
Global warming, Global Cooling, Solar Fluxing, CO2, whatever. If this is truly a science blog, any scientist worth their salt, regardless of the hypothesis they are investigating, should know better then to draw conclusions from one data point (all this cold snap is).
There are some record lows happening now and everyone is calling for global cooling and the next ice age starting. What were peoples thought’s a few weeks ago during December 26, 27 and 28 when record highs were being set? By the same logic being employed on this blog now, everyone must have been calling for global warming during that week?
What am I missing here?
The pain-in-Maine: Evidence of incipient global cooling masking underlying (in Al’s case, overtly lying) global warming. Merely remove the ice and snow and let the warmth issue forth.
The Chosen One’s people basking in the glow of his presence.
Without a tele-prompter, a blank slate.

Obama Talks Global Warming to Shivering Crowd
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/01/obama_talks_global_warming_to.html
“Only a handful of times in our history has a generation been confronted with challenges so vast. An economy that is faltering. Two wars, one that needs to be ended responsibly, one that needs to be waged wisely. A planet that is warming from our unsustainable dependence on oil.”
“…you’d think that — given the extraordinarily glacial locale — the supposedly brilliant future leader of the free world would have appreciated the hysterical disconnect in his words.”
Ed Scott
I think people just want to believe in Obama and he has tapped into this basic need to be kept safe from threats-climate, financial or violent -HL Mencken summed it up thus;
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

Taylor (20:29:52) :
“Im a skeptic, by all means. But, this seems like cherry picking to me, doesnt it?
Im up in Calgary, Alberta, and the forcast tomorrow is positive 14 Celsius, that breaks the record as well (If the the tempurature is true to its forcast)…. I fully support being a skeptic but we cant lower to the lever as the AGW crowd by cherry picking… Unless I missed the point by all means please tell me, but to me this looks somewhat selective.”
Be reminded that the concept put forth by Algore/UN/IPCC/Pachauri is that man has control over Nature. Their (Algore/UN/IPCC/Pachauri) attention and effort, is toward cooling the planet, Earth, by restricting the means by which man is warming the planet, Earth. The factual reporting of weather data is not “cherry picking” because man is ultimately responsible for the weather and the climate. A cooling anomaly (local over-cooling), is evidence of the imbalance over man’s many activities that “cries out” for greater regulation and control to synchronize man’s activities in a manner to achieve the ideal temperature and climate as envisioned by the Algore/UN/IPCC/Pachauri politicians. Good politicians always inspire competition between, at least, two points of view in order to achieve a consensus, usually a minority consensus.
You may believe that I am joking when I say that man is responsible, but man is responsible for allowing the outrage of a seminary drop-out (Al), a deceitful scientist (Hansen) and corrupt politicians (UN/IPCC) to cause gross economic damage to the civilized population of planet, Earth, under the guise of “saving the planet,” while having the hidden motive of total population control.
Remember the original argument that man’s emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere is the cause of global warming. Vegetarian Pachauri says that the methane emissions from bovines, swine and farm animals, in general, are contributing factors to the manufactured hoax of global warming. I am awaiting news of the slaughter of the 400,000,000 bovines in his native home, India.
The reporting of factual data is not “cherry picking.”
Seriously? A science blog?
I keep reading comments about “the chosen one” and other contempt for Obama. That’s fine and dandy because science, and good science, should influence some public policy, but some of this is just ridiculous. The ineligibility of Obama to be president? Are you kidding me?
Let’s focus on the science here, not some double standard decrying ‘liberal media’ on one side of your mouth and echoing Rush Limbaugh’s latest program out the other.
I mean, this is supposed to be a science blog is it not? So lets focus on the science…something I have seen very little of.

Do they do this for record HIGHS?
This is NOT AN CAGW web blog. where are the links? pictures? ETC?
Warsong (22:25:10) :
how did we melt the Ice Caps of Mars? How did we manage to install a second “Great Spot” on Jupiter, and, cause Saturn to have a Great Spot it never had before? How did we cause the great Storms roiling the atmosphere of Venus and the moon Titan? And, why have they suddenly returned to normal following the absence of Sunspots on the Sun? (16 days and counting, several weeks ago).
If there is proof of climate change on our neighboring planets this is the nail in the cagw coffin, AND PROVES solar forcing.
PLEASE LINKS and Anthony we need post on these as well
Thank you
Tim
The media are in the tank for “global warming” because they are almost all left-wingers. This anthropogenic climate change stuff is very popular on the left since it is used to justify extreme environmentalism, and it fits in well with the leftists’ desire to cede more power to governments and organizations like the UN.
Anyone who knows much about real science knows that “consensus” is a very poor proxy for truth. Paradigms come and go over time. All the great scientists in history made their names by blowing prevailing opinions out of the water, replacing old paradigms with newer, more accurate ones. I doubt that “anthropogenic global warming” will survive this process, but it may do a lot of damage to our civilization before it dies.
Benjamin P. (10:27:05) :
“Obama’s ineligibility to be president? How is that kool-aid tasting?
Actually it was beer, but it tasted good and btw it’s not a kool-aid theory, as it is supported by sound constitutional/legal “logic” and the lack of good ‘data’. This is somewhat analogous to Catastrophic Warming situation where the best scientific logic is stifled by the Climate Team, Politicians and the MSM and professional scientific organizations are aiding and abetting by letting it go on. The Pres. eligibility issue is stifled by the Obama Team, Politicians, and the MSM and the Courts are aiding and abetting (so far) by not hearing a case on the merits, but tossing on technicalities.
Benjamin P. (10:27:05) :
“What am I missing here?”
I think you’re missing that this post was about temperature measurement practices and their goodness or lack of goodness. This is an on-going topic of this site and the surface stations site. The devil is in the details.
If society doesn’t make policy decisions based on the best scientific information and doesn’t apply sound cost benefit thinking how much better is our path going to be than that of a random walk? Why do we have brains if we’re going on random policy walks?

The only one “drawing conclusions” appears to be you. What you seem to be missing is common sense, a common attribute of AGW believers. Of course, one “data point” doesn’t prove anything. No one says it does. However, the evidence that we are indeed in a cooling period now is mounting. Pay attention, and you might actually learn something, if not from this particular post, then from some of the others. Don’t be so quick to judge.

Missing? Reading all the posts and links that will convince any scientist that “something smells rotten in Denmark” as far as “A” in AGW goes.
This present post is categorized as “weather” and I am sure you know the difference between weather and climate?
It is just a fun PR excursion in the opposite direction of Hansen et all turning up the heat when presenting the global warming agenda to congress, though we are not turning on the air conditioning.
Personally I hope the Thames freezes over, since we need a PR event to wake up the zombies who will wilfully plunge the world economy into worse straights than it already is.
Clive:
I know it’s anecdotal, but I have heard that, during the Soviet era, Russian rural stations tended to report colder winter temperatures (than actually measured) in order to get more money from Moscow for heating.
Pamela: The air inversions you are suffering in cold from while up on the higher ground it’s all sunshine has a root cause.
The lack of solar wind has backed off the heliopause and a lot more cosmic rays get in, striking the lower atmosphere, reacting in the UV to form those low-lying air inversions. Such conditions held the smoke down on the ground for weeks on end in No. CA this past summer, grounding firefighting aircraft, much to the dismay of the Fire Command.
What you don’t have is wind to stir up the lower atmosphere, if I am getting your scence correctly.
@Clive
‘Regarding validity of the cold temps recorded in Maine it seems to me that it is easier to influence thermometers during a hot spell (i.e get a false record high) than it is to get a false record low assuming the actual thermometers are indeed accurate’
Great thought there, Clive. Don’t know how well that idea would stand up against serious scientific scrutiny but given the current, seeming paucity/absence of that methodology in large tracts of climatology (Present company and associates excepted from any implied criticisms, of course) I think your hypothesis is pretty safe for some time yet!
A lot of effort has been directed towards the role of the UHI effect in determining global temperature trends. Thanks Anthony and fellow workers!
Maybe it’s about time that a similar amount of analysis be expended in examining whether, or not, the (circa) 1990, asymmetric removal (compared to UHI) of UCI (Uncontaminated Cooling Islands) data-collection sites, may have skewed the findings of the IPPC and the paradigms of the model-makers!
Yes, I admit freely to a prejudice that that the balance of retention between UCI and UHI was asymmetric – but darn it folks I’m only human too!
The last word for the existence of the UCI effect I’ll leave to the following snippet from a previous contributer to this site.
HT to TTY for this:
‘In swedish there is even a special word for such places: “köldhål” (”cold-hole”).’
EW (04:17:53) :
The Russians have turned off the Tap because they don’t want to honor the Contract Prices, and, the Ukraine can’t pay the price they’re demanding.
[…] Anyway, Europe is now much more eager to start building pipelines from Russia that do not cross the Ukraina.
And there in sits the rest of the story… Ukraine got about a 50% buy down on gas prices, and Russia got about a 50% buy down on pipeline costs. (Compared to world rates). Russia wanted to raise the price, so Ukraine said “us too”… the end game is EU pays to bypass Ukraine. Guess who wins?…
I would not want to play chess with Putin.

I believe the current thought is that today’s aerosol/particulate/jet contrail/et. al. levels in the atmosphere is the only thing that is keeping the planet cooler […]
– it’s all being masked due to “global dimming”.
I would assert that he is simply hiding his folly in the aerosol error bands:
http://www.sciencebits.com/CO2orSolar
– the thought that the very activites that supposedly generate warming are also preventing it to some degree.
If Hansen wants to take that tack, fine with me. Just look at him with great admiration and state: “Oh, THANK YOU! You have SAVED US! All we need to do is stop taking sulphur out of the jet fuel and we can prevent catastrophy! That is SO MUCH BETTER than the alternatives!” …
Lets try that again with the right italics closure…
