UN Climate Panic Rests on False Scenario and Buried Past

By Vijay Jayaraj

Three years ago, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters that “the era of global boiling has arrived.” In September he repeated the alarm. Launching the U.N.’s first report on temperature “overshoot,” he declared, “Humanity is speeding past the limit to avoid climate catastrophe.”

Guterres’ hysteria rests on three weak legs: a worst-case scenario that its own authors have now abandoned, a “pre-industrial” baseline drawn from one of the coldest centuries in 2,000 years, and almost total silence about warm periods that preceded multi-megawatt power plants and SUVs by hundreds and thousands of years.

Start with the scenario. For more than a decade, a computer-based hypothetical case called RCP8.5 and its successor SSP5-8.5 drove the most frightening projections of flooded coasts and failed harvests. They assumed a world of 12 billion people by 2100 and a near tenfold rise in coal use, a future predicted by no energy market.

This April, the modelers who design scenarios for the next generation of climate simulations conceded the point. Their projections of high levels of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) had become “implausible,” and their update showed about 0.9 degrees Celsius less warming by century’s end. In August, the U.S. government proposed amending its Fifth National Climate Assessment so that results based on earlier projections can no longer be labeled “expected” or “business-as-usual.”

Now examine the yardstick. Every headline about crossing a 1.5-degree threshold measures warming from an 1850-1900 average. Those decades sit at the end of the Little Ice Age, an era when “livestock died, harvests failed, and humans suffered.” Choose the bottom of a cold trough as zero and every degree of recovery reads like a fever.

The most serious misdirection is what the panic merchants leave out. Earth’s climate swung widely long before anyone burned coal. A 2013 reconstruction in Science found that in comparison to today, intermediate Pacific waters were 2.1 degrees warmer during the Holocene Thermal Maximum 8,000 years ago and about 0.65 degrees warmer during the Medieval Warm Period 1,000 years ago. Tree rings from Finnish Lapland show that earlier estimates of warmth were too low.

Alaska’s retreating Mendenhall Glacier has exposed upright spruce and hemlock stumps more than 1,000 years old, a forest that grew where ice later advanced. At the Schnidejoch pass, more than 8,000 feet up in the Swiss Alps, melting ice has yielded more than 300 artifacts left by Neolithic, Bronze Age, Roman, and medieval travelers who crossed the mountains when the route was open. Certainly, temperatures warmer than today had prevailed.

Forecasts of heat-induced doom overlook the benefits of today’s elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. A NASA-led study found that a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated land grew significantly greener over a 35-year period, with CO2 fertilization explaining 70% of the gain. The year after the world supposedly crossed the threshold of 1.5 degrees, the world’s farmers brought in a record cereal harvest, according to FAO data.

Humans have always faced weather hazards. Floods, droughts, storms, heat waves, crop failures, and changing rainfall existed before the industrial age. They will exist whether a theoretical global average temperature is 1.8 degrees Celsius or 2.8 degrees above an arbitrary baseline. The question is not whether risk exists, but how people respond to it.

And this is where having energy supplies that are reliable, affordable, and abundant helps people manage nature’s challenges. Economies that become more prosperous, maintain reliable systems, strengthen infrastructure, and reduce vulnerabilities will do more to protect human beings from climatic hazards even if they do not satisfy U.N. emission targets.

The future trajectory of CO2 emissions will be influenced overwhelmingly by the growth of energy demand in Asia and Latin America. There can be no justification for telling developing societies there that they must remain poor so that wealthy nations can preserve a global temperature target that has no scientific basis.

The U.N. fabricated an emergency, using a scenario its own modelers now call implausible, employing a baseline estimated rather than observed, and erasing warm eras that ancient farmers, traders, and travelers lived through. That is not science, but stagecraft performed for power and self-enrichment as it made the rest of the world poorer.

‘Merchants of Panic’.

Good title for a book on the subject.

Especially because it mocks Oreskes’ total fabrication “Merchants of Doubt”.

The UN has been at this climate change nonsense since UNFCC in 1992 (long before ‘the climate science was settled’). The question is why?

There are three probably related answers.

  1. Potsdam’s Edenhofer admitted ‘climate change’ was really about wealth redistribution.
  2. COP’s always demand UN administered ‘green climate fund’ ‘reparations’ to the underdeveloped world—a UN voting majority.
  3. It has enabled massive self interested bureaucracies—at the UN alone the UNFCCC Secretariat and the IPCC.

I read a report that President Trump notified the UN that the US will withdraw from the IPCC and UNFCCC which takes effect in 2027.

Sir, let’s keep the long story short. Why is this nonsense that much successful? Because it’s all about two things: money and power. In the so-called global North, money = power, in the so-called global South, power = money. The climate story nicely responds to either paradigm, providing an excellent legitimate platform for big and small crooks to unite. Needless to say, it also attracts a countless number of “useful idiots”. All else that we see, incl. the three points you mentioned, are just manifestations of realization of the basic concepts. Thank you.

About that cold time, my wife’s grandfather on her mother’s side had cattle near Wadsworth, Texas that froze to death around 1900, at that time, Galveston Bay froze. Thankfully, it is warmer here now. It was cold when we fought the British and won and became the United States of America. Thankfully, it is warmer now. Days are shorter than in 1972 when the Atomic Clock was put into service, officially, they measure length of day accurately, that means sea levels have gone down since 1972, on leap seconds have been added since 2016, that means that sea levels have not risen in the recent decade. Sea level rise increases inertia of the Earth Crust and makes days longer, requiring more and more leap seconds, no leap seconds have been added since the modern time measurement procedures were put in place. Sea level rise is not accelerating, it is not even rising. If they start needing to add leap seconds, then sea level will be rising, if they do not need to add leap seconds, there is not sea level rise. They are trying to change how they do this, they want to change to a system that does not add or subtract leap seconds, because that puts “”double quotes around their sea level rise lies.””

Wise words as usual from Vijay Jayaraj, the world is poorer as a result of the climate craze except for those who saw it as an opportunity most notably the Chinese.

AS an old old Forensic Historical Analyst I repost this:
1928 – Origin of Environment fear as genesis of the Totalitarian New World Order.  This through Environmental mental fear application. At the Sixth Party Congress held in Moscow in 1928, Communists wrote and approved “The Program” to bring in the New World Order. What most Americans cannot comprehend is the real nature of this diabolical criminal scheme. The Program of the Third International called for a global environmental program for transformation of all human beings on earth to accept the New World Order. These and other facts are brought to light by General Benton Partin in his videotape, Globalism: The Program. This through the above 1923-6 continuing Rockefeller Psychopolitics education program. Now think; 1892, 1904,1913,1923,1926,1934, 1945 and on.
Then this. The UN construct: http://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/38199716
Then this:
– 1946 – UNESCO Education is instituted. 1946 – 1948: 1948: UNESCO: Its Purpose and Its Philosophy by Sir Julian Huxley (the first director-general of UNESCO, 1946-1948) is published, in which Huxley declares: “The general philosophy of UNESCO should be a scientific world humanism, global in extent and evolutionary in background... Political unification in some sort of world government will be required…Tasks for the media division of UNESCO (will be) to promote the growth of a common outlook shared by all nations and cultures…to help the emergence of a single world culture… Even though it is quite true that any radical eugenic policy will be for many years politically and psychologically impossible, it will be important for UNESCO to see that the eugenic problem is examined with the greatest care, and that the public mind is informed of the issues at stake so that much that now is unthinkable may at least become thinkable.” Excerpts from this volume were reproduced under the title, “A New World Vision” (The Humanist, March/April 1979), and the Fabian Socialist Huxley, who was named 1962 “Humanist of the Year,” elsewhere said that humanism’s “keynote, the central concept to which all its details are related, is evolution.” Also, it was Sir Julian Huxley (brother of Brave New World author Aldous Huxley, and grandson of Thomas Huxley who was known as “Darwin’s Bulldog” because of his defense of evolution).
Then this:
– 1961 – Sir Julian Huxley creates the “World Wildlife fund” to coincide with his overt position on “Humanism”, “Globalism” coupled with “Eugenics” as the tree legged stool noted in “Psychopolitics”. Humanism, considers animal species equal or above man.

Anything else is frankly B.S. and needs to be canned. Histroy calls for Prince Charles to become the titular head of the “world Order.” We are at war and have been for years.

Nice article. It states what most sceptics of CAGW believe. There is nothing new under the sun. The warmists never address the past and how temperatures have changed. Humans survived glacial periods by adaptation. Humans can survive what is really minimal warming by adaptation. Controlling weather via emission of CO2 is a pipe dream sold to unwary people.
