A weather site’s amazingly sloppy measuremnt goes viral across Germany…
Much of Europe has been enduring a heat wave and below normal precipitation. Not surprisingly, the media are busy using the hot weather to further promote climate alarm and get more clicks however they can.
One way to accomplish this is to use sompletely bogus measurements to get viewers to believe the end of the world is near. The latest example is brought to you by Germany’s donnerwetter.de – a weather site no less!
Likely with the aim of magnifying the drama of Germany’s drought situation and the recent hot weather, donnerwetter here at Facebook posted a video showing the Rhine River’s alleged dire situation:
“28°C water temperature”, proclaims the gentleman from donnerwetter.de, after dipping his thermometer in the Rhine yesterday. Germany is cooking!
That footage of the Rhine’s temperature measurement has since gone viral across Germany, but not because of the Rhine’s 28°C temperature. The video has made a splash across the German Internet because of the obviously totally shoddy manner the measurement was performed!
2 cm depth
Firstly, the measuremnet was made in ridiculously shallow water — so shallow in fact that the man was able to walk to the spot with his running shoes on. Perhaps he didn’t want to bother taking them off. Maybe he forgot to bring boots along. No need! 2 cm depth is close enough!
The 1 sec. dip
Next, he dips the end of the thermometer in the water, but holds it there for just a second, second and a half, never allowing the instrument a real chance to react. The 28°C reading was probably the air temperature- This would make sense judging from the shadow the man casts–indicating the measurement was performed on the East side of the Rhine and the time being around 10 – 11 a.m. The video itself was posted on Facebook at 12:32 pm.
Time to heat up
The extremely shallow and still water had ample to time to heat up for hours under the bright morning sun.
Shoddy quality on display
According to its website, donnerwetter is located in Bonn, so the measurement was probably taken at the Rhine there.
Donnerwetter.de is run by meteorologist Dr. Karsten Brandt, a man we could expect to have good knowledge on how to properly take accurate measurements. It’s a real mystery how such shoddy quality got passed him. Brandt’s partner at donnerwetter.de is Michael Hoffmüller-Klein.
As of 3 pm today, donnerwetter.de still has yet to take down this embarassing video at Facebook.

I grew up on Boca Ciega bay in Florida. If I took a measurement in shallow water like that in summer it would probably be 100F or more. Either they are stupid, think we are, or both.
Similar to what occurred at Manatee Bay a few years back.
I remember that. I actually went to the NOAA buoy website and downloaded, like, a week or so of data. IIRC, temp was taken at low tide in an enclosed (or restricted) bay, with the temp. sensor barely above the bay bottom after the sun had been heating it all day. And then it was reported as a record sea temperature.
I reviewed that same data, but it also include above surface air temperatures that were lower. Also noted the seabed was black muck.
And the riverbed is dark.
Just found my old data file. the reported temp. that everyone was having the vapors over was 101.4°F, but the temp. at about the same time the day before was 100.1°F. Guess some really intense global warming kicked in over a 24-hour period.
The PBS NewsHour news outlet reported it like it was the end of the world at the time:

The BBC did something similar a few weeks ago. Showing a digital thermometer on a rock in full sun to demonstrate how hot it was. This is their response to my 2nd complaint. As usual they dismissed the 1st out of hand.

It had been mentioned several times in the programme that temperatures were forecast to go above 35 degrees Celsius. We don’t believe it was misleading to include the shot of a thermometer resting on a rock/stone reading 34.1C – particularly when shortly after this report, we heard from BBC weather meteorologist Ben Rich, holding a different thermometer, explain that:
“We measure the temperature in the shade but if you are standing in the sun, that is what you would be getting right now [41.9C]. But in the shade, those temperatures rapidly rising through the 30s, we’re going to get quite close to beating that UK temperature record of 35.6 Celsius.”

Even with the warning here how lame the video on FB was, I was caught off-guard. So ridiculous.
Having done a fair number of stream measurements in a career that included mineral and geothermal exploration–temperature, pH, dithizone–the white pants and sneakers says volumes. But it is indeed strange that an adult considers this useful data.

When it comes to fueling “German Angst” about so-called “man-made” climate change, no tactic employed by the mostly left-wing, green alarmists in the media is too absurd or too stupid to further amplify it! After all, a justification must be provided for the completely senseless and expensive CO2 reduction agenda, which is causing catastrophic economic consequences due to the shift to unreliable “renewables”with extreme energy costs!
The gullible must be convinced that CO₂ is a kind of main regulator for the Earth’s temperature and that Germany can make a significant contribution to CO₂ reduction by phasing out energy production with fossil fuels, promoting electromobility, etc. – which is of course absurd when one considers the developments in India and China!
As always, the end justifies the means.

Oh, how funny. I spent a fair fraction of my youth in rivers, creeks, and oceans. I could have told him, based on my childhood experiences, that one inch deep water on a river edge would be pretty warm.
I just went through an exercise in bootstrap calibration of temperature sensors. I noticed my evening ice cream bars were kind of soft, and that there was a good chance some of it would end up in my lap before finishing it. This awareness was late coming because, before her recent death, my dog Madeliene would get that last melty bit. I went on a freezer measurement campaign with a cheap Chinese made bimetallic frig thermometer, two different mercury thermometers, a cheap IR thermometer, and lasty, an ancient Omega 871 “digital thermometer” with wire thermal couples.
I’ve never been great at experiment design, and this one was the usual random process. None of thermometers agreed, of course. I could immediately eliminate the IR unit as the readings were all over the place based on, I guess, content emissivity. Likewise, the frig thermometer was just way out from the others, I guess that is why it’s been in a drawer all these years. The mercury thermometers were exceedingly difficult to read, misting or frosting over immediately, along with the indicated temperature shooting up as I tried to read them. The Omega is a nice bit of kit; it has been very useful over the years. But its 30 years past calibration. I did a lengthy ice water cal, and it seems to read low by 1.3F. Now I was getting somewhere. One of the mercury thermometers, a lab grade VWR 0-300F, read 32F on the dot. The other, a cheap commercial unit read 34. So now I have a calibrated thermal couple unit and I adjusted my frig freezer. Actually, I turned it down the one last remaining cold increment. My wife, (49 years now), pointed out this course of action right away.
I did purchase a Rubbermaid “Commercial Products Thermometer”, for the princely sum of $14.37. A gamble as it looks pretty much like all the other Chinese made frig thermometers. But it seems to be spot on, reading about a degree more than the Omega. At room temp it matches the VWR too. Seems we were running our frig compartment a little on the warm side of the safe zone.
Did this expert never hear of a thermocline?

You take some low quality data, push it though a sausage machine and put it on stake, add you special sauce, then tell drunken fools it is real data.
