Is “I don’t feel any emotion about climate change” a Symptom of Emotional Distress? Or do People Just Not Care?

How storytelling can help articulate emotions that evolve as the climate changes

As the smell of smoke and burning drifts around my neighbourhood from wildfires in nearby north Wales and Manchester, I worry that the consequences of this climate crisis are getting closer.

The decline of our planet is no longer just a physical threat; it is a mental health emergency. The Climate Cares Centre – the world’s first research hub dedicated to climate change and mental health – warns that the climate crisis is affecting the mental wellbeing of hundreds of millions of people around the world.

According to 2024 survey by the independent research tracker Climate Barometer, worry (43%) and sadness (20%) are the most frequently felt emotions linked to climate change by the British public. Many people also stated: “I feel no emotion about climate change.” In a world full of competing crises, feelings linked to the climate crisis can be hard to put into words.

Herein lies the problem: some of these feelings are so profoundly new or still emerging that we do not possess the language to articulate them. And if we can’t name a feeling, how are we supposed to process it?

Here’s an interpretation you might not have considered Bernadette. When people ticked the box on the survey saying “I feel no emotion about climate change”, maybe they were trying to tell you they just don’t care, that climate change is a none issue for them.

Perhaps if the survey had included a box saying “I don’t think climate change is important”, that box would have received the ticks which went into the don’t care box.

The climate barometer website Bernadette cited admitted some people might not care about climate change the way she does;

Yet emotions also have the power to disconnect people from thinking or caring about climate change. For those who are disillusioned with or disengaged from the climate conversation, their strongest emotions may be reserved for their rejection of climate policies or environmentalism in general (sometimes called ‘contrarian’ anger). For some people, climate change doesn’t provoke many emotions at all.

Read more: https://climatebarometer.org/topic/emotion/

My interpretation of “don’t care” is supported by surveys which ask people to rate climate change compared to other issues, at least when they dared run such surveys. Climate change consistently comes dead last on issue comparison surveys.

For large numbers of people in Britain today, especially in train-wreck economy former industrial regions like Liverpool, finding enough cash to make it to the end of the week without getting kicked out of the rental or going hungry is a far greater priority than whether your grandkids enjoy more beach weather. While I’m not dissing efforts to redevelop Liverpool and improve people’s lives, Liverpool’s shamefully low life expectancy and relatively high unemployment rate shows many people have yet to experience the benefit.

I visited Liverpool once, a long time ago, to see someone I knew. The countryside around Liverpool is beautiful, mile after mile of rolling hills and mostly well maintained houses built decades or centuries ago. But my lasting impression of Liverpool city was miles of rusting dockside factories, boarded shopfronts and some scary looking people on street corners. I hope some of that redevelopment cash is reaching the people who need it.

Climate concern is a luxury cause for bored rich people who know where their next meal is coming from. A luxury many people in Britain can no longer afford, thanks to Mad Miliband’s expensive green energy crusade – especially in once industrialised energy intensive regions like Liverpool and Lancashire.

I don’t remember any blue, purple, green or pink-haired freaks in the 70’s. I’m nearly certain, if they existed, they were in some kind of mental institution. Today we have trans-reality as someone mentioned recently in another thread.

Logically, the only solution to CO2 induced Climate Change™ is to annihilate the big emitters – India and China. Clearly they have no intention to reduce CO2 production left to their own decisions.

CO2 induced Climate Change™ is a cargo cult. It proposes doing something that is thoroughly useless to change the weather that has always changed.

The cycles of glaciation that exhibit peak see level fall of 40mm/yr and rise of 70mm/yr have occurred regularly without human intervention. Surely the first step in nailing the cause of climate change is to nail down the cause of the big changes.

Emotional pleadings are all they have because empirical science doesn’t support their paranoid delusions. It is an effective propaganda strategy because emotions can easily override reason. The easily manipulated don’t have the critical thinking skills or emotional intelligence to see through the BS.

What out-of-the-ordinary climate change?

The normal state of the climate is to change a little. It may be a little hotter one year than another, for example, but there is no out-of-the-ordinary climate changes going on. This is all a figment of the author’s imagination.

She should stop scaring people about the climate. The climate is not doing anything it doesn’t normally do. Making it out to be out of control is just plain false.

No one is emotionally troubled by man-made climate change, because man-made climate change (allegedly caused by increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere) is not discernable. Any perception of a ‘CO2-problem’, comes from the media, not from observations of the real world. Ms. McBride associates smoke in the air with a man-made climate change disaster because she was told do that. Her anxiety comes from the fictions she was told to believe and not from anything in the real world.

The climate has nothing to do with ‘climate anxiety’. ‘Climate anxiety’ is a mental condition intentionally caused by a fake narrative. A better name for it is: ‘Liberal Induce Anxiety’, or LIA. LIA is a very serious and growing mental health problem.

The multi-story building on the south side is made of red bricks that must be rich in nutrients — vegetation grows on the (no longer) window sills. Adjacent streets are similar.

I have earned not one of the nouns and adjectives describing Dr. Bernadette McBride’s cv; I’m a geologist who has visited hundreds of thousands of outcrops with rock hammer, Brunton compass, hand lens, and 10% HCl bottle and looked at the climate evidence preserved in them. That has made me completely unemotional about climate variations; the experience has shown me that climate has changed all on its own many times long before humans could flog themselves for it. Maybe if the good doctor studied something other than how to implant unjustified emotions with words she could calm down, and possibly even understand why others don’t share her angst.

I’m also unemotional about anticipating the planet being 10 degrees warmer as it was in the Jurassic, life seemed to do quite well–as long as humans retain the ability to produce explosives and dinosaurs can’t.

I do care, & I have ‘Symptoms of Emotional Distress’ …
… because idiots like her are too dumb to research the empirical data to see whether the weather is cataclysmically changing or not. If they can’t/won’t do physics or atmospheric chemistry, then a quick trawl through history would show climates have fluctuated many times & man was the victim, NOT the cause.
These low-grade academics think because they have a PhD in something, they are ex-sperts in everything; they sit in their Ivory Towers, surrounded by shelves of books, producing potty postulations, and run those through an echo chamber until they become “the new facts” that are added to the propaganda mill & pushed by the media.

Maybe the people are just numb from facing the hourly tsunamis of climate alarmism published.
Maybe, just maybe if media did honest and balanced reporting, some might actually take an interest in it.
Maybe if social media was not an echo chamber repeating the chant of climate crisis minute by minute people will have a moment to think about it.

Maybe they are just successfully blocking out the screaming noise.

The two proven best ways to influence public opinion are anger and fear.

Bernadette McBride needs to be reminded of that from time to time.

Maybe the mental health crises stems from people told to be afraid, be very afraid, and that messaging contradicts with what their own eyes perceive.

I am sure there are alternatives that could be explored.

“Climate change fatigue” is real. The constant drumbeat of doom and gloom predictions that never come to pass is annoying and an insult to thinking people’s intelligence. Even more annoying is that governments spend taxpayer money on so many “climate change” boondoggles. The hubris that Man can change the global climate, whatever that is, with higher taxes and the masses going back to a medieval standard of living (but not our elite saviors of course) is particularly annoying.

It has gotten so annoying, I think the situation warrants considering a permanent open season on climatistas, no bag limits. Only partially kidding.

Surveys worldwide consistently show that climate concerns are at or very near the bottom of citizens’ priorities . In addition, when they are reminded that such weather variations have been occurring for centuries and long before the global population had increased to its current 8.3 billion and also well before any great increase of global emissions was recorded, very few except the faint-hearted are going to go sleepless over a slight rise in temperatures. Naturally there are those who will swallow all the alarmist predictions as guaranteed fact, but they’re a tiny minority and even only a small number of them are going to make any big lifestyle sacrifices for a natural occurrence and a non-problem.

rtj1211
July 28, 2026 2:48 pm

I have a lot of strong feelings about climate change, but they are rather different to the ones that uneducated neurotics have.

I believe that there may very well be human-induced climate change, but it is not in the main associated with changing levels of carbon dioxide. It is in my judgement more likely to be associated with quasi-military behaviour, quasi-criminal behaviour linked to geo-engineering, weather manipulation, use of weather as an instrument of warfare and use of corrupt governments to receive payments for climate actions that are if anything harmful rather than helpful.

Weather warfare has a long and undistinguished history as a tool of psychopaths, control freaks and delusional god-complex-afflicted individuals. It stems from the delusion that by ‘controlling weather’ you will somehow only control it in ‘good ways’, rather than having the adult knowledge that as soon as you let the genie out of the bottle, the evil humans on earth can use the technology to kill, starve, drown or freeze millions of people for no good reason other than base motives of imperial expansion.

Anyone who thinks that creating heat domes which last several weeks is anything but criminal evil should be simply lined up and shot. The world has existed for millions of years without humans interfering with weather patterns and the fact is that life on earth prospered without human interference.

Anyone who thinks that storm intensification technology serves the human race needs to see a psychiatrist, who may very well recommend they be locked up to protect the rest of the human race.

My focus these days is on whether there exists within the 500 million ‘chosen people’ a bunch of genocidal psychopaths who have agreed to murder a billion people using weather warfare.

Of course, they can’t do that if the world is focused on the way they might achieve that.

That’s why all the carbon dioxide nonsense is perpetuated.

It keeps the rest of the world from focussing on the true dangers to mankind from mankind itself……

July 28, 2026 2:56 pm

She doesn’t “feel”. That’s something that SHOULD be irrelevant. Maybe she should try thinking, if that’s a tool available to her. Feelings are particularly manipulable, particularly using fear based propaganda. With the worst consequence of that fear based propaganda being the shut down of thinking, reverting to a base emotional response. Through this mechanism, ordinary people may be coerced to support and even engage in unspeakable acts of cruelty and stupidity.

Yesterday as my wife and I neared the summit of a minor peak in the South Sierra we came across two enormous, downed Fox Tail Pine trunks. This was at an elevation of 11,500 feet. These trees, probably already 2000 years old, died about 4,000 – 5,000 years ago as the earth cooled from the Holocene optimum, and the tree line descended some hundreds of feet as a result. The current tree (life) line has crept back up, but only for the small scrub form of the tree at the elevation of these fallen giants.

I doubt Bernadette knows much about the real world around her; I wonder if even in the physical presence of this inconvenience example of earth’s climate history, if she would care.

I’ve long known this about the Foxtails, but my wife Linda didn’t. She is about as unpolitical as they come, and hardly pays attention to climate matters etc. But she keyed into my explanation of the Holocene, even asked a couple good questions.

There is basically a rim, layer, or strata, of these dead Foxtail Pines, throughout the South Sierra. We were in the Horseshoe Meadows area, climbing a pretty little peak high above the alpine meadows and lakes. Most of the trails crossing high passes will quickly pass through this elevation zone (especially when heading down) and restricts the hiker to a linear path only about 1/4 – 1/2 mile long through the zone. I don’t remember seeing many of these fallen giants close up while hiking the trails. But going cross country climbing the peaks you pick your path – having an excuse to stop and stare (and pant) is welcome.

These trunks are amazingly impressive and beautiful. The trees live for thousands of years, and the wood is very resinous. In the cold dry high altitude air little if any decomposition occurs. The wood is eroded by wind, water, and sun into a striated fiery gold/orange blaze. The ones we went by were about 6 feet in diameter, about 40 feet long, with almost no taper.

Certainly glad I stimulated a more detailed description; I went to satellite views and looked the area up. It gets to the limits of resolution to expand that far, but occasional straight images of what could be these logs does seem apparent. I assume the living vegetation is waist to shoulder height as would be typical near tree-line.
