During the last few weeks, a series of wildfires have occurred over the region.
Today’s satellite imagery shows where the fires were burning (orange dots), with smoke plumes quite evident. Most of these fires began in grass/range vegetation.

In mid-June, there were a few grass/range fires in the Columbia Basin (see image below).

There has been drumbeat in the media that the wildfires were the result of, or significantly enhanced by, global warming/climate change due to increasing greenhouse gases such as CO2.
For example, a story from the Seattle Times Climate Lab was full of demonstrably false claims (such as claims that wildfires are occurring ahead of schedule due to global warming).

In this blog, I will provide the facts and demonstrate that the global warming connection with the current fires contradicts current scientific understanding.
Fire Ignition
The fires during the first half of summer were either human-initiated or caused by lightning.
Human ignition obviously is not related to increasing greenhouse gases, and neither is lightning.
In fact, I examined this issue with colleagues at the Washington State Climatologist Office, examining the potential for lightning using state-of-the-science regional climate models.
The results were clear: under global warming, there are no increases in lightning activity for Washington State (see sample graphic below for Ross Lake in the WA Cascades)

Mid-summer is the lightning season in the Cascades and eastern Washington, as noted by the lightning climatology below. Nothing unusual.

In short, we can say definitively that fire initiation in our region has nothing to do with global warming.
The Fuels
Then there are the claims that a lack of snowpack or prematurely dried fuels were important in the fires this summer, with both due to global warming. This is demonstrably false.
A map of the fires this year (below) shows that nearly all occurred over grass/rangeland or started in grass/rangeland and then spread into terrain.
Because the fires started at lower elevations, the below-normal snowpack of the last year had no impact on these fires.

Even at one higher-elevation fire (Little Giant), the fire started in an open area of a previous burn with lots of grass and downed trees.
A key point is that the range/grass areas were already dry, as would be expected this time of the year, even without any global warming.
Their moisture content was NEAR NORMAL before the fires.

Consider region 10, which includes many of the fires. The 100-hour fuel moisture (small vegetation) has been near normal (the gray shaded area), so was the ERC (energy release component) of the fuels.


In summary, any claims that human-caused global warming contributed to the recent Northwest wildfires are demonstrably false.
Lightning ignited fuels of normal dryness.
But there is something that has radically increased the chances of wildfires east of the Cascade crest: the invasion of highly flammable invasive grasses, such as cheatgrass. A map of the “exotic” grasses is shown below. You won’t hear about this in certain media and by some advocacy groups. But the increase of these grasses during the past half-century has greatly enhanced the flammability of the landscape.

Historical record also says no.
That’s even more significant considering that we have a whole lot more fire-starters with us today.
There are only two reasons for wildfire, drought and ignition.
Ignition most by arson, lightning, electric cable, carelessness.
Global warming isn’t resposible for one these reasons.
You seem to imply but specifically omitted fuel. Just a nit.
I should add accidents, f. e. cars, burning windmills etc.

Arson seems NOT to be a thing in this part of the country. But it does happen. One guy, a road-work flagger (in 2004) would set fires after his work. Authorities found reason to suspect him and so began aircraft surveillance. He set at least 10 fires before his arrest. He spent 6 1/2 years (of 10 sentenced) in prison.
In the past month, a couple of fires within 25 miles of me were started by cars in some manner. About 3 years ago, a tire on a trailer blew out and sparks from the steel rim started numerous fires along several miles of road. Researchers claim about 84% of fires are caused by something people do. This large-area rural county has 2.5 X more people now than in 1960.

The article mentions Northern California, Quebec, and France. No mention of Washington, which is specifically where John said he was talking about, and is from.

Look at the map in the post and it is clear these solutions are not of much use.

Any widespread invasive plants are almost impossible to deal with. We have lots of them here in the New England. They’ll be here forever.
We should get more goats. I saw a video clip that showed goats being used to remove flammable grasses and weeds along a highway.

They need some deep-red DANGER-DANGER like temperature anomaly maps.
It’s the fuels. It’s always the fuels. The West has summer drought every year. The snow pack melts every year. Lightning and human-caused ignitions happen every year. And fuels, i.e. biomass, grows every year. Hence fires happen every year.
The problem is fires can be very destructive to human and natural resources, some fires more than others. Huge fires, so-called mega-fires burning hundreds of thousands of acres, severely damage values: soils, watersheds, wildlife, homes, timber, livestock, and human lives. Small fires in the right places can be beneficial, but big fires inevitably burn in the wrong places.
The only way to contain, control, and extinguish fires is through fuel management: fire breaks, road access, thinning, grazing, mowing, mulching, controlled burning etc. Non-management of fuels guarantees massive and destructive fires.
Increased CO2 leads to increased plant growth, so that could be one avenue where the rise in CO2 increases grass fires. More likely cause is lack of fuel management as noted by “OR For”.

Wildfire conversation is almost always about what started the fire. The conversation should be about what burns and where. Resources need to be directed primarily at fire prevention instead of high-visibility high-cost high-media-interest fire-fighting hardware. Goats may be a lot less valuable than huge planes dropping red liquid for prime-time viewing, but they are a lot more valuable for saving property and lives. (It’s not just goats, of course).
Nobody so far is mentioning WIND.
In my experiences of contending with bushfires, outbreaks from whatever causes and whatever types of vegetation can often be contained fairly quickly by properly-resourced and deployed fire-fighting units.
But when the wind ramps up, it becomes pandemonium very quickly.
I don’t know what a remedial response could be to managing wind strengths & directions to deal with bushfires. Nobody does.
(I could be frivolous and suggest we start a protest movement called “Just Stop Wind”, but that would get lotsa pushback from the grifters who peddle windmills for subsidy payoffs.
Besides, there are already plenty of over-the-counter remedies for excessive wind outbreaks 🙂 )
Cliff has mentioned wind in multiple earlier posts on fire season. Wind is definitely a major factor in the spread of wildfires, especially a hot dry wind.

Wind, yes, but also time of response and ease of access to afflicted areas.
higher temperatures lead to more evaporation lead to more rainfall lead to lower temperatures lead to less evaporation lead to more wildfires and lead to higher temperatures. Not much of a connection to global warming there.
But the golden rule of wildfires is: No fuel, no fire. Live by that rule and you live a lot more safely. Botanica demonstrated that.

Eastern OR and WA are dry generally. (I don’t remember much about the Baker Plateau in NE OR – probably pine trees. Drive Seattle to Spokane and you’ll mostly see wheat fields and no fields (too dry, there is irrigation in some places especially near rivers like the mighty Columbia).
Similarly, the Fraser-Thompson Canyon and the lower Caribou region of BC beyond that are dry, people losing houses this month.
(I used to suggest to people from Japan that they do a circle trip of Seattle-Spokane then north to H3 and on to Calgary then back to the coast via Highway 1 to also see big mountains, overall purpose is to see the scale of North America. For shorter trip drive H2 from Everett WA through Stevens Pass to the Grand Coulee dam on the Columbia then on to Spokane. For a longer trip head east from Calgary a ways to see the Great Plains of NA.)

Western Wa is dry as well. I’m on Whidbey Island. We get about 26″ annual precip, last time I checked. And most of that is fall and winter.

The snow pack is often cited as a cause. Common sense would tell you that it has no influence if you have a drought in July or August other than at the highest elevations . Long gone..

The forecast shows no chance of rain in California.

Forecasts call for very high temperatures in California through August 13.
I live in Eastern Oregon. We had a mild winter with lots of rain so plenty of plant growth during the spring. Once it stops raining, the clouds move away and the sun comes out it takes roughly a week to go from green grass to tinder dry. We had Tstorms move in that starting at 7pm and lasted until 7am. Guess how many of the grass fires you see on the above map started after that Tstorm? Yeah I don’t know the answer either but we’ve been socked in with smoke since then.
Just as an FYI, my area is ~300ft above sea level so snow pack does not apply.
