No, New York Times, Climate Change Is Not Making Tennis Players Ill

A recent article in The New York Times (NYT) suggests that climate change is increasingly endangering tennis players at the French Open, particularly those less inured to the heat, making them ill and unable to compete. This is false. While it’s true that this year’s French Open at Roland Garros was unseasonably hot, there are many factors that contribute to tennis players suffering this year, and no evidence of any trend in either hotter temperatures or increasing incidences of heat prostration or stroke over time.

In “Jannik Sinner might have a heat problem, but tennis has a bigger one,” the NYT claims that despite the Roland Garros officials determining that temperatures were not hot enough to suspend play:

“And regardless of what the scientific meter might say, the conditions for the first five days of the tournament have been seriously hot and seriously hard. They have also exposed a lack of preparedness for unseasonably hot conditions on the part of both players and the tournament, at a time when global temperatures are rising and tennis has become more physical than ever.”

The player highlighted for this article is Jannik Sinner, who dropped out due to illness, possibly in part related to heat. The NYT says Sinner has “one major weakness,” which is “[t]he hotter it is, the more vulnerable he becomes.”

One element that this story neglects to mention is the fact that once someone is hit with heat-related illness like heat stroke one time, they become much more vulnerable to heat syncope and general sensitivity to high temperatures, and even recurrent heat stroke, for years to come.

I have had fairly serious heat stress (including nausea, chills in 90+ degree weather, confusion) from playing tennis drills one hot Chicago summer day and can attest that despite it not developing into stroke territory, since then, I have needed to be much more careful about drinking extra water and taking reasonable breaks during exertion in hot temperatures.

It’s not clear whether Sinner has suffered heat stroke or stress in the past, but it wouldn’t be surprising, as it is a fairly common illness among hardcore tennis players, who push themselves through games even when they begin to feel ill. What is clear is that once a person has experienced heat stroke or prostration, they are more prone to such health events in the future. At the French Open this year, Sinner admitted he played despite knowing he is sensitive to heat, and “woke up not feeling very well” that day anyway.

Global temperatures may be rising by a small amount on average, as the NYT asserts, but climate change cannot be immediately blamed for the recent heatwave in France and other parts of Western Europe, which occurred during the French Open. It is, for Paris at least, a record-breaker as far as temperature stations go. However, a single heat wave is not a climate trend, rather it is just weather. Also, the recent heatwave does not cover all of Europe. While parts of Western Europe have been under an extended heat dome, a stagnant, high-pressure weather system that surged up from Northern Africa trapping hot air underneath it, much of Eastern and Southeastern Europe has be experiencing unseasonably cold temperatures. Most news outlets are ignoring the unusual cold spell in Eastern Europe, while trying to link the unusual heat in Western Europe to global climate change.

Multiple Climate Realism stories about various heat waves in Europe over the past few years (herehere, and here, as examples) explain that heat waves need to be clearly defined so that they can be tracked over time. Only a sustained trend in frequency and severity can imply a causal connection to global climate change. In general, the modest warming of the past century has been driven not by heat spikes or extended days of above normal temperatures, but rather tends to make extreme cold less common, driving averages upwards. This is most prevalent in urban and suburban areas, where the Urban Heat Island effect has a strong influence over local temperatures.

Ironically, the NYT article does unwittingly describe one of the elements of UHI, which is heat radiating off hard surfaces, when it describes the red clay court surface: “radiating heat up and helping to cook players from every direction.”

Tennis tournaments are held all over the world, including some very hot places, like the Australian Open in Melbourne, the U.S. Open in New York where temperatures are regularly in the 90s, or Atlanta and Miami. The BNP Paribas Open is held in the middle of the desert of California in Palm Springs, where temperatures can easily hit the 90s and low hundreds, even in March.

There is one major difference between Roland Garros and other tennis venues: Roland Garros is in an area where it is unable to expand and build an enclosed stadium for temperature control. The NYT article even acknowledges this, admitting that at other venues like at the U.S. Open and Australian Open, “there are cold air hoses by the player benches so they can air-condition themselves during changeover” and “players have complained about a lack of ice, about water in the courtside refrigerators not being as cold as they are used to.”

These things make a difference when playing fast-paced sports like tennis for 3+ hours in the sun, and other venues are able to accommodate players.

It sounds a lot less like climate change is hurting tennis players and more like Roland Garros is somewhat outdated, and the tournament organizers should have been more prepared for things like heatwaves, in order to keep players safe. The NYT’s desperation to turn a story about players losing matches due to illness or the intensity of the game in tough conditions into a climate change story just goes to show that climate realists currently hold the advantage point. Alarmists seem worried that any lost opportunity to mention climate change will result in game, set, match for realists.

The most effective prescription for championship tennis players who get the vapors when it’s a bit of a warm day would be a cup of concrete to help them harden up.

(or give the game away and take up lawn bowls, where you can wear a big stupid hat)

We’ve got a lot of work to do in training AI models to spot all the pay-to-play volume-based incentives for publishing nonsense. That includes NYT-style daily filler nonsense and pal reviewed publications for tenure and other rewards.

It makes them so ill,
that they started to make tournaments in superhot places like Dubai.

And the hotter those temperatures get,
the more hot places are having huge sports tournaments.
Football 2022 Qatar,2026 Mexico,
Olympics : ’16 Brazil ’28 LA,
’32 Australia

And yes – professional Athletes in popular sports should be getting more ill as result of ever increasing money= more and better competition = increase in training and performance and more and more reaching their limits.

Interesting btw that NYT didn’t bother to worry about the increase in cardiac problems after the vaccine.
There is at any given point in time only a single digit number of active football/soccer players with 400+ goals.
And 2 of them(Aubameyang, Kun Aguerro) got serious heart issues at the same time –
How likely is that?And Aguerro had to end his carier.
If they could blame this on AGW they wouldn’t have waited a second to do so.

More evidence that climate alarmists (like NYT) are really now scraping the bottom of the alarm barrel. Their story about the French Open was absurd on its face.

Het stroke is real—just claimed the life of an 18 year old hiker in Grand Canyon. The French Open organizers had contingency plans but wisely chose not to use them. The US Open is played later in summer, typically a hotter month in a hotter venue in a summer hotter climate than Europe, yet no one has ever mentioned this problem before concerning the US Open.
Confounding weather with climate is something alarmists often do. No matter whether French heat wave or US polar vortex cold. Is a ‘tell’ for their alarm mendacity.

The alarmists have been claiming that climate change has been interfering with the Winter Olympics into the bargain by keeping snow and ice from freezing to a proper consistency. Two ways to alleviate this problem: stage the Games in early January rather than 6 weeks later and/or choose permanent locales farther north where colder weather is the norm, and require all participating countries to contribute to the maintenance of the facilities so that the proper standard of cooling can be maintained.

Minor correction.

The “heatwave” ending around 10 days ago was most pronounced in western France. That is where most of the local “Hottest day in the month of May EVAH !” records were broken, but note that it was widespread enough to set a new “national average” record as well.

Paris, however, did not break the (1922 and 1944) “highest Tmax at Parc Monsouris in May” record of 34.8°C.

Good god this post is stupid. The author is trying to claim that as the world rapidly warms, the increasing heat waves arent related. Just nonsense. Is anyone dumb enough to believe this crap?

NB : You failed to quantify “rapidly”. Please correct this oversight.

The first paragraph of the ATL article :

NB : Linnea provides no “supporting evidence” for her claim that there isn’t a “trend in […] hotter temperatures”, but I’ll come back to that later.

Linnea is clearly focusing on tennis players (not) collapsing from heat exhaustion during the French Open / Roland Garros tennis tournament, not worldwide heat-related deaths amongst the general public throughout each and every calendar year.

When it comes to “the world” / GMST trends she later wrote :

A bit “subjective mood / conditional tense” for my taste, but she is a long way from outright “denying” that “world” temperature trends could be positive.

OK, so let’s look at the Parc Montsouris weather station data, located in the south of Paris, during the French Open date range … let’s say the last two weeks of May plus the first week of June, i.e. from the 25th of May to the 7th of June, that should cover it.

First draft of graph attached below, clearly showing that the “Maximum Tmax” trend, the one that matters most when it comes to heat-related illnesses, is actually negative.

NB : “Heat stress” will occur during the “peak heat” times, i.e. when the “Maximum Tmax” temperatures occur.

Sorting the “Maximum Tmax” values, and selecting those of 34°C and higher gave me the following table :

Year : Maximum Tmax
1947 : 35.0 (°C)
1944 : 34.8
1922 : 34.8
2026 : 34.3
1996 : 34.1
2015 : 34.0

Note that the 1922 to 1947 “triplet” temperatures are all higher than the 1996 to 2026 “triplet”.

Linnea’s claim of “no evidence of any trend in […] hotter [ maximum ] temperatures” in Paris during the French Open tennis tournament is hence justified using my (admittedly limited) data.
