Former Vice President Al Gore said on Wednesday that government policy should promote “regenerative agriculture” during a discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF).
The WEF is in Davos, Switzerland, for its annual meeting, with panels and speeches from world leaders, philanthropists, business leaders and A-list Hollywood actors, according to the program on the forum’s website. Gore made his comments during a panel discussion titled “How Can We Avert a Climate Recession?” (RELATED: ‘Patrick Bateman Meets Sparkle Beach Ken’: Scott Bessent Delivers Sassy Retort To Gavin Newsom)
“But the role of policy which we’re discussing here is crucial in agriculture as well. In the US, the largest source of government subsidies to farmers is in a program called crop insurance,” Gore, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” claimed. “The title is a bit misleading… in order to qualify for these subsidies, farmers basically have to assure the government that they are not going to engage in regenerative agriculture because the incentives have been to produce as much as possible as quickly as possible, fence row to fence row instead of taking care of the productivity of the soil and not depleting its vitality.”

“So we need policies that in recognition of the fact that governments around the world typically do subsidize farming, but don’t subsidize them in ways that incentivize them to go in the wrong direction, but incentivize them to go in the right direction,” Gore continued.
Environmentalists have targeted agriculture, particularly meat production, claiming that it contributes to climate change. The Dutch government forcibly shut down 3,000 farms to meet European Union environmental policies in 2022, leading to a backlash as a pro-farmer party won 15 of the 75 seats in the European country’s legislature the following year.
During the 2023 WEF meeting, one speaker called for an end to eating meat.
“If a billion people stop eating meat, I tell you, it has a big impact. Not only does it have a big impact on the current food system, but it will also inspire innovation of food systems,” Jim Hagemann Snabe, chairman of the Germany-based conglomerate Siemens AG, said during a panel called “Mobilizing for Climate.”
“I predict that we will have proteins not coming from meat in the future, they will probably taste even better. So why are we trying to mimic meat if we can have a better taste? They will be zero carbon and much healthier than the kind of food that we eat today,” Snabe added.

Oh yes, lets produce less food so we either have to put more land into production (which greens are against) or go knock a few billion people on the head to save them from starving to death (green approved). So few greens understand that modern farming practices means we have a lot fewer acres dedicated to growing food then we did 100 years ago. Take away modern farming and millions of acres will need to go back under the plow that are currently allowed to grow things such as trees, grass, vegetable garden or housing developments to name a few.
From the story headline, I thought he was proposing to pay farmers with his own money to do this…go ahead, Al, put your money where your big fat lying charlatan mouth is!
But of course like all good socialists he wants to use Other People’s Money…
In a sane world Al Gore would never have been in any position of authority. That he was, and that anyone pays any attention at all to what he says, is prima facie evidence that a too-large percentage of the populace can’t distinguish between fact and fiction. P.T. Barnum was right, he just “mis-underestimated” the frequency!
Agriculture is by its nature regenerative and sustainable – that’s why it replaced nomadic, hunter-gathering three thousand plus years ago which was neither.
“… because the incentives have been to produce as much as possible as quickly as possible, fence row to fence row instead of taking care of the productivity of the soil and not depleting its vitality.”
Crop rotation and leaving land lie fallow to “take care of soil productivity” and not “depleting its vitality” requires more land, produces less food, increases food prices = hunger.
These days soil vitality and productivity is achieved by using those wonderful fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides derived from wonderful fossil fuels, and crop production is thriving in higher atmospheric CO2 concentration – and requires less land put to agriculture.
Totalitarians gotta total.
Spoken by someone who should realize he will be viewed on the wrong side of history.
No one with a carbon dioxide emissions profile (or a butt print) as large as Big Al’s should be telling people what to eat or how to otherwise exist.
Humans are omnivores. Our bodies rely on the consumption of a variety of foods to maintain good health. Exclusionionary food programs will fail.
Mandating farmers to produce less food means population reduction. If you scratch a climate zealot you usually find a neo-Malthusian.
I would hope that he would set an example, and we all can see the results on his body, we can then contemplate it.
So far, Al Gore is batting 000. He’s been wrong about everything.
Obviously, the man is perfect! 🙂
Algore, the Joel Osteen of the Church of Warming, must need a new jet. At least he makes Greta look intelligent.
So far, no cigar, … when the fake steak tastes better than the real steak….call us again…
Does anyone even listen to Gore any longer? It seems to me that he’s fallen into the category of Canada’s David Suzuki who at least threw in the towel and admitted the battle against fighting climate change was largely lost. Gore and the rest of the alarmists must have deeper pockets so that they consider to that playing the doomsday game is still worth a try. Meanwhile the rest of the population continues to live in the ways that suit them economically and conveniently.
Paraphrasing: the largest agricultural subsidy in the US is a program called crop insurance.
Why is it that I always thought crop insurance was to provide support when your crops were adversely affected by natural disasters?
Reminds me of what Bloomberg supposedly said: “What’s so hard about farming, you just plant seeds in the ground”?
Red meat.
Children need the amino acids found in red meat proteins for proper development. As research continues, initial reports are that children on vegan diets are more likely than not to develop autism.
Eating red mead is a source of Vitamin D. As research continues, initial reports are Vitamin D deficiency leads to influenza and covid vulnerabilities.
