E&E News: “The Paris Agreement at 10: What the World has Achieved”

From MasterResource

By Robert Bradley Jr.

Not much, really. Just a whole lot of waste and false hopes with massive government intervention to create a wind/solar/battery bubble. The subtitle of the CLIMATEWire piece said much: “The blockbuster climate deal made history a decade ago. But its record at taming climate change is spotty.

Some quotations (realism be served) follow:

But if the agreement identified the dangers, it has not resulted in lasting action to solve them — at least, not yet.

Yet the COP30 climate talks last month showed that a fractured and divided world is unable to find consensus on phasing out fossil fuels — the main source of rising temperatures — a decade after nations signed an agreement to do just that.

… carbon pollution from fossil fuels reached a record 38.1 billion tonnes this year…. While many countries are cutting pollution from their energy systems, it’s not enough to offset rapid growth in global energy demand, the analysis found…..

… the ambitious 1.5-degree goal is gone, said Pierre Friedlingstein, a climate researcher at the University of Exeter…. “The issue is it’s been 10 years after Paris and we’re still showing slow progress.”

Before COP30 convened last month in Brazil, more than 100 countries had missed multiple deadlines to submit their latest plans to cut emissions. More nations submitted them over the course of the conference, but many weren’t aligned with the Paris temperature targets.

But the gap between what [developing] countries need and receive is wide…. Getting the finance flowing where it’s needed is a major challenge.

The article contains a lot of overoptimism and false hope. The anti-CO2 proponents have to do that, particularly at this precarious time. But there are cracks in the narrative, as the above quotations show.

As Paris was virtue signaling, actually doing something was an option for most participants.
The Energiewende and NetZero were European delusions. The Green New Deal remains a wish list, as Harris lost.

If we can’t control the weather, then we definitely cannot control a running average of weather.

Considering that climate is the statistics of weather observations, “taming” climate change is complete delusional nonsense.

“fossil fuels — the main source of rising temperatures”.

This statement cannot be defended. It is currently impossible to quantity how much of the warming in the last century is due to human activity or due to natural causes. Anybody claiming otherwise is either lying or delusional.

How much warming does CO2 give at 0.04$ of the atmosphere.

Reply to  Clive Bond

Typo Alert: 0.04$ should be 0.04%
.
CO2 does not cause any warming of air. Shown in the chart (See below) is a plot of annual average temperature in Adelaide from1857 to 1999. In 1857, the concentration of CO2 in air was ca. 280 ppmv (0.55 g CO2/cu. m. of air) and by 1999, it had increased ca. 368 ppmv (0.72 g CO2/cu. m. of air), but there was no warming of air in this port city. Instead there was a cooling which began in ca. 1940. The reason there was no warming of air with the increasing concentration of CO2 in the air is quite simple: There is just too little CO2 in the air. In 1999 Tavg was 16.7° C

For recent Adelaide temperature data, I went to:
https://www.extremeweatherwatcherwatch/cities/adelaide/average-temperature-by-year. Tmax and Tmin data from 1887 to 2025 are displayed in a table. For 2025 the computed Tavg is 15.9° C. In 2025 the concentration of CO2 in air at the MLO in Hawaii is 426 ppmv (0.84 g CO2/cu. m. of air) This new data shows that confirms that CO2 has no effect on air temperature in Adelaide.

The chart was taking from the late John L. Daly’s website:
“Still Waiting For Greenhouse” available at: http://www.john-daly.com. From homepage, go to end and click on “Station Temperature Data”. On the
“World Map” click on “Australia”. There is displayed a list of stations. Click on “Adelaide”. Use the back arrow ton return to the list of stations. Clicking the back arrow displays the “World Map”. John Daly found over 200 weather stations that showed no warming up to 2002.

NB: If you click on the chart, it will expand and become clear. Click on the
“X” in the circle to contract the chart and return to comments.

The irony is that without fossil fuels temperatures will plummet and people will freeze in their homes and their BEVs with discharged batteries.

Try to charge a frozen LI-ion battery and what do you get? A nice fire, with toxic gas emissions, but hey you can be warm for awhile.

Many forget the origins of the ‘challenging’ 1.5degsC. The Paris 2.0 was TOO SLOW and not FRIGHTENING. So the IPCC was made to write the stupid unscientific SR1.5 on time for the failed Katowice COP. Full of blathering about how much ‘safer’ 1.5 was. Universally laughed at by real scientists.

You got it, CdL. There is no science underpinning the 1.5C goal, it was entirely PR and political, they knew it would take some time for even the cooked world temperatures to increase to 2.0 C +. They needed an “aspirational” goal to try to terrify people in the interim, thus 1.5 C was born.

Call me unterrified.

Reply to  oeman50

Yea, they went to 1.5C as the “tipping point” because they were not sure we would ever reach the 2.0C “tipping point” in the near future.

So if we consider the high temperature point of 2024, as reaching the 1.5C “tipping point”, then we can all rest assured because the current temperatures are about 0.5C cooler than the 2024 high point. We are not getting hotter. We are not tipping. We are currently cooling.

Well, the Climate Liars can point to the 1.5 C and the cooling as the climate reached the tipping point spiraling us into a new ice age. Wait and see. It will (my prediction) happen.

The Paris Climate Accord, has one absolutely useful purpose.
it is a constant reminder to all, of what can be produced by hubris without any concern about impacts produced by over zealous idealists.
In the ten years since it was cobbled together the impact on climate has been zero. The impact on CO2 has been zero the impact on sea level rise has been zero. The impact on western countries engaged with the requirements outlined in Paris has been economic collapse including France ironically.
it is the perfect history lesson. No sane government will ever engage in nonsense like the Paris Accord ever again.

Notice the framing of “The World”. Wrong, it’s the cuckoo-brain continuously caterwauling Climate Cabal, and what they’ve “achieved” is wasting $trillions, destabilized electric grids and plastered countrysides with expensive, hideous hunks of junk in the name of “saving the planet”.
But their days are numbered, and they know it, and are terrified. Because The World is waking up to their lying, grifting, thieving ways.

For a US temperature check, I to:
http://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/countries/united-states/average-temperature-by-year. The Tmax data Tmin data from 1901 to 2024 are displayed in long table. Here the temperature data for these to dates:

Year——-Tmax——-Tmin——-Tavg Temperatures are ° C
2024——16.8———4.3———10.5
1901——14.9———1.6———-8.2
Change–+1.9——-+2.6——–+2.3

Note that Tavg has exceeded the Paris Accord limit of 1.5° C by 0.8° C, but I don’t recall any weather reports on the TV that the US has undergone any catastrophic climate change.

Why is there this extreme concern over temperature? The availability of fresh water is more important.

As deadline after deadline, tipping point after tipping point have passed without Armageddon… yet… a sensible approach would be that, “ if the agreement identified the dangers, it has not resulted in lasting action to solve them…” … if it hasn’t done so by now after more than 30 years, umpteen COPs, relentless propaganda, and $hundreds of billions spent, the sensible, sane conclusion is – it never will.

So, it’s too late anyway. Let’s go down with the ship with grace, with dignity whilst the band plays on.

To a nontrivial degree, the story is about socialism and how socialists were able to use environmental issues to manipulate governments, media, and voters (not to mention how cheap it was to buy scientists to bloviate for the cause). The collapse is very much about the inevitable collapse of socialistic overreach, this time around. Climate change was the centerfold cause, and had to be propped up in ever-increasing insanity to prop up the illusion that socialists were still in control. Socialist control is slipping, but is the monster really dying? The Western European, Canadian, and Australian governments are truly evil, and deserve to be crushed. The deep state in the USA is far from dead, with a Bukele-style crushing of the judiciary needed. If the climate crisis issue can be buried far enough, that will be an achievement worth praising (although global cooling may still be a concern). But the monster seems to have many lives (especially in NY and CA), and keeping it under control will remain a challenge.

“carbon pollution” like “climate pollution” is bunk.

1.5 C was a non-scientific, political goal.

We have not established the optimum climate parameters, unless one believes 1850 was the optimum climate (contrary to paleoclimate data).

Until we have specific measurand that are testable by everyone, we do not know if we are departing from the optimum climate or approaching it. The Climate Liars have also silenced everything related to natural variability, including the sun is a constant and the orbit is the mean (however that was calculated) and the distance to the earth is set at the day-night terminator and the 4000 miles closer at the equator at noon does not get more energy.

It achieved many things.

1- It achieved several weeks of intense, nationwide ad placement for Team Obama in American news outlets ranging from very small-town newspapers on up (pay-to-play news advertising).
2- It led up to the outdoor press conference with the Sierra Club script in which pres. Obama proclaimed that if Americans did not believe the climate narrative and his policies then they had their heads in the sand.
3- It encouraged Putin’s thugocracy to proceed with full scale invasion of Europe as the Paris Distraction Agreement was signed.
4- It paved the way forward with billions in grants and loan guarantees to politically connected green startups to overpromise and underdeliver on everything from geothermal (that was lower temp than expected), concentrating solar (that was cloudier than expected), and non-standard cylindrical solar devices that were not investable on Wall Street or anywhere else other than in the minds of Pelosi and Obama.
5- It generated hundreds of millions of dollars in executive pay and bonuses in entities propped up long enough to stretch the payoffs before bankruptcy and federal loan default.
6- It provided the blueprint for billion-dollar scale fraud in federal programs that followed to present day criminal investigations and audits.

None of these findings should be a surprise; in fact, it would be a bigger one if much progress had been made at all. The reality is that none of the signatories to this agreement or similar ones really had any intentions of taking any strong action because it was obvious that it would entail big setbacks to their economies and consumer living standards. Negative impact on these would likely result in loss of voter support in future elections, so political parties weren’t going to undermine their futures by supporting theories that they were doubtful about in the first place. So it was easier just to pay the whole concept of taking climate action simply lip service because there weren’t any penalties or consequences resulting from failure to meet any targets or pledges anyway, and the so-called climate crisis is widely considered to be just part of a con job. So more such reactions can be expected in future.

Little did they know this greatest emperors new clothes story of modern times was at its peak and without definitive cause and effect evidence for the claim the BS detector of the general public was beginning to twitch.
