Pope prays for world to recognize urgency of climate crisis as he celebrates Mass’ using new rite

BY  NICOLE WINFIELD Updated 11:47 PM AEST, July 9, 2025

ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV prayed Wednesday for the world to recognize the urgency of the climate crisis and “hear the cry of the poor,” as he celebrated the first papal Mass using a new set of prayers and readings inspired by Pope Francis’ environmental legacy.

The Mass, in the gardens of the Vatican’s new ecological educational center at the papal summer estate in Castel Gandolfo, indicated a strong line of ecological continuity with Francis, who made environmental protection a hallmark of his pontificate.

Wearing flowing green vestments, Leo presided at the liturgy in front of a statue of the Madonna and at the foot of a reflecting pool, immersed in the lush green gardens on an unusually cool summer day. He said the world needed to change its mindset about the planet and what is causing “the world to burn.”

“We must pray for the conversion of so many people, inside and out of the church, who still don’t recognize the urgency of caring for our common home,” he said. “We see so many natural disasters in the world, nearly every day and in so many countries, that are in part caused by the excesses of being human, with our lifestyle.”

How depressing. Over the years US Catholic priests have notably pushed back against the increasingly radical green agenda of the church leadership, but I guess there is always an exception.

The Catholic Church is the largest non-governmental provider of education and medical services in the world.

Oh dear, bang goes the dogma being put forward in many of the comments to this article.
Thou shalt believe that the Catholic Church is a criminal organisation.
Thou shalt believe that the Catholic Church has always been opposed to science
And other such commandments.

False conclusions.
We are discussing the Pope’s political position statement.

While that may have with high credibility been true in 2010, this is 2025. While it may well still be true today, your posting that 2010 report summary does not prove how it has evolved over the past 15 years. It is indeed what the primary global function of the Church should be.

This is atrocious sacrilege.

The tenants of the Christian faith, especially that of the Catholic, is that God works in mysterious ways. God is omnipotent and omniscient and God has a plan. A Pope pontificating that humans can somehow supersede God is an abomination.

So where is the burning bush? Where are the next tablets of commandments?

The Catholic Church has thrown off any vestiges of being nonsecular and has self-identified as being political.

It seems the pope has overlooked the teaching of Jesus on the providence of God in the Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:45:

He (your Father in heaven) makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good,
and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (English Standard Version)

He (your Father in heaven) makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. (New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition)

There are numerous references to the sovereign God not only being responsible for the seasons but in control of the weather. One of these is the stunningly beautiful poetry in Job 38.

If anyone believes in a sovereign Creator who has caused the Scriptures to be written under the guiding hand of His Spirit to inform and guide those who put their faith in Him, that person cannot be an alarmist.

The rain it raineth on the just,
And also on the unjust fella;

But chiefly on the just, because
The unjust stole the just’s umbrella.

He should be more concerned about little boy’s safety than something about which we can do nothing, like climate control.

He is dealing with the same problem as bureaucratic government — the deep state. There are entrenched advisors in the Vatican who are lying to him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t appear to have the courage and discernment to recognize and cast out the evil working within.

He should have the strength of faith to follow his beliefs and stay out of politics.
There is enough work for any Church to do in this world.

I wonder.

the Vatican’s new ecological educational center at the papal summer estate in Castel Gandolfo

Like many other dignitaries who support green initiatives because it’s the socially fashionable path to follow, the Pope should be aware that governments, businesses, industries and consumers tend to ignore their proclamations and follow energy paths that that are most convenient and cost effective. The Pontiff should also realize that the scare tactics employed for too long by climate alarmists have worn thin for some time now and are ready to be laid to rest. In fact, it would be a fitting if he were to administer the last rites.

The Church fully embraces scare tactics. Believe in what we tell you to believe of you will burn for eternity.
