Trump stalks global climate talks as COP29 draws near

BY NICK PERRY
Sep 16, 2024

PARIS –

The prospect of Donald Trump returning as president is hanging over crucial U.N.-sponsored climate negotiations, with countries “holding back” their positions until they know who sits in the White House.

Veteran observers of climate diplomacy say uncertainty over the election outcome is stalking this November’s COP29 summit, which starts just six days after voters decide between Trump and Kamala Harris.

The election lands awkwardly as governments try to build global consensus in coming months not just around climate but stronger protections for the environment and a treaty to address plastic pollution.

Ali Mohamed, chair of the African Group of Negotiators, accused developed countries of navel gazing and displaying “a lack of seriousness” at the bargaining table.

“The climate change situation really doesn’t care about who is at the helm of the U.S., whether it is a Republican or a Democrat,” he told reporters.

This is funny on so many levels.

For starters, could fake claims that renewables are cheap possibly be any deader? Renewables are hideously expensive – otherwise why would nations which have already gone big on renewables be holding back?

And then there is the funny they are still blaming Trump – even though he hasn’t been in office since the start of this decade.

Only true believers still think COP conferences have anything to do with the environment. COP28 was held in a petro-state, where the COP28 conference president allegedly spent much of his time trying to ink natural gas sales.

COP29 will be held in Azerbaijan, even more of a petro-state than the UAE. Azerbaijan is a nation which for over a century has been renowned as a major provider of oil and gas. I wonder what their environmental focus will be?

The environmental movement is dead, except in a few places which persist in clinging to the faith, their power is broken. The world will never genuinely switch to green energy. World leaders barely even bother to hide their contempt for the global environmental movement anymore – why else mock greens by holding big environmental conferences in petro-states?

The only question is, how will the petro-state organisers of the COP climate conferences top this supreme mockery of environmental causes? Will the next climate conference be held in the middle of a Texas oil field? On an ocean oil rig? It’s going to be a challenge to pick a location even more hilarious than Azerbaijan.

If this is really all about science- it should make no difference who sits in the white house. Just proving it’s all about politics.

The UNFCCC gets most of its budget from donations from all the countries. Even the poor countries donate small amounts of funds
which they can ill afford to do so.

Use Google and search for: UNFCCC budget. There is a table that lists the donations from the countries. The financial tables for the budget are complex, and I couldn’t quite figure out the total amount, but it is many millions of dollars.

If Trump is elected for president, he could end the donation not only to the UNFCCC, but also to COP59 and especially the IPCC.

Oh and take a look at the Keeling curve and remark that 28 COPs have had no effect on CO2 whatever. Deluded, ignorant, selfish, excitable, liars.

With experience, my projection is that inquisitive explorers will find precisely that.
In a project in the middle east, we were impressed by the beauty of the local ladies and employed some. We were required to have a keeper, an army Colonel, who assembled us to say “Yesterday, we executed 6 Korean workers who were interested in our women”. No more was said. It worked to cause an early halt to the usual exploratory approach, at about the armpits.

What is the connection between Climate Change (TM) and “a treaty to address plastic pollution”

Reply to  Retired_Engineer_Jim
September 17, 2024 10:27 am

In 5000 years, all plastic will all be under a mile of ice making cleanup very difficult. So WE need to clean it up now.

The Green Blob has always deliberately confused the public by confounding ‘climate change’ and ‘pollution’. They even present CO2 rise as ‘carbon pollution’ so people will think of soot and ash. I have read numerous news articles about ‘the climate crisis’ which will fold in comments about plastic in the ocean and trash mounds, etc.

A treaty to prevent plastic pollution?

Let’s rename it the IPPP and send money. Sounds like a plan to me.

Reminds me of a line from the outdoor humorist, Pat McManus, “When I was a kid, we didn’t have “pollution”. We called it “dumping stuff in the creek”.
(He was not in favor of that.)
We need reasonable laws to stop real pollution.
We don’t need conservation or environmentalism to be warped into a hockey stick shaped lever to power and money.

I always distinguish between environmentalism and conservationism. The latter is the sincere desire to be cleaner and more efficient. The former is a quasi-religious cult for the promotion of political dominance and rent-seeking at taxpayer expense.

Concur.

I am a conservationist from an early age.
The environmental movement is purely activists seeking thrills.

I do think we have a plastic pollution problem based on ocean floor photos viewed and detritus washed up on beaches. A shame, too. The process of converting plastic to oil is not all that complex.

COP28 was held in a petro-state, where the COP28 conference president allegedly spent much of his time trying to ink natural gas sales.

But that was a policy that actually would have reduced emissions.
Buy Qatari gas and don’t burn coal.

And that’s the reason the Greens opposed it.

If emissions were reduced, and the CO2 levels kept rising like it’s still 2020, then the AGW industry would be dead in the water.

“The environmental movement is dead”, but the Administrative State is currently alive and well. Unless and until the Administrative State/Oligarchy is stopped and backed out of our hair, we’ll continue to have fights against our Constitutionally protected rights. The Constitution was suspended when the decision was made to weaponize the FBI and have them frame Trump about Russian collusion, frame Trump’s Jan6 supporters, raid Trump’s home and reduce security for Trump’s rallies. The vote counting in November, (probably take all month), will decide if the suspension should be extended.

September 17, 2024 11:50 am

It’s not unusual in politics to blame a “slow start” the first year on the previous administration. But, after 3 and a half years of failure in the US, the fault lies squarely on the Democrat Party.
Yet they still blame Trump for their their own policy failures even to the point of forecasting future failures if their failed policies are not allowed to continue.

We are not in a climate crisis, CO2 is not the control knob for our climate, we are not going to reach a tipping point and suffer irreversible global warming. CAGW and Net Zero have nothing to do with climate, science or the temperature. They are purely political vehicles to gain power and control. They need to be exposed for the criminals that they are.

From the home page of my blog:

“The leftists gain power by keeping people alarmed, and demanding to be led to safety, by scaring them with a series of imaginary boogeymen. Including CO2, Big Oil, Donald Trump, Russians and rural white Americans”.

Recently, some leftists have been blaming Trump for two attempted assassinations … of Trump.

My two general rules of thumb about leftists:

(1) Leftists ruin everything they touch

(2) Leftists lie or deceive about every subject

There are a few exceptions to (2), but (1) seems to apply to everything.

Don’t you know Azerbaijan is leading the way to Net Zero?

After all it is only home to one of the world’s largest gas fields, Shah Deniz, in the Caspian Sea and is expected to extract around 411 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas in the next 10 years.

It’s also doing well in moving away from fossil fuels which only provide just under half of its GDP, over half of all Government revenue and more than 90% of the country’s export earnings.
