Green Extremist Activists Attack Magna Carta Document in London

It seems Just Stop Oil has run out of purple-haired, tattooed young losers and has raided the old people’s home. ~Mumbles McGuirk

Two elderly green protesters entered an exhibit at the British Library and used a lump hammer and cold chisel in an attempt to smash the glass case of the Magna Carta.

One of the four remaining copies of the 1215 Magna Carta was the subject of the latest attack against symbols of Western culture by Green extremists on Friday. The British Library, where two of those four copies are held, and where the Treasures Gallery where one of them is on display was closed after the incident today, confirmed the ancient vellum document laying out the roots of Western liberty was not damaged.

Luckily they didn’t get to the document.

If this sort of action escalates, the perpetrators might start praying for their own safety ….

. . . . . One of the four remaining copies of the 1215 Magna Carta ….

When an item is that rare and that precious, it’s going to be protected by something a little more bulletproof than ordinary safety glass. Not that these types would know anything about that sort of thing. But as they acquire a little more knowledge about what it takes to get actually damage these kinds of protected items, it’s just a matter of time when they use too much force and end up seriously injuring themselves in some permanent and very uncomfortable or hugely painful way (such a thing has happened in the long-ago protester movement).

For what, at the end of the day? A non-crisis that’s kept alive by anti-science propaganda. Imagine sacrificing your own self in support of something that stupid.

Just Stop Oil already has a whole long press announcement out about this, including the old biddies hammering a big chisel into the Magna Carta glass case. The PR said it was “proportional action to generate political pressure”—to stave off the impending climate catastrophe. They really are nuts.

“proportional action to generate political pressure”

I notice they didn’t “public pressure”.
The public is getting fed up with such antics.
I hope the politicians notice the public is not happy when such things are allowed to continue.
(As I recall, didn’t the crowd pull a few of such idiots off the top of a London subway train not that long ago?)

Gunga Din,

there is no date yet for our next general election, however, more to the point who is there to vote for? All mainstream parties are all bent on dragging the U.K. downwards and the fringe parties with different policies have no chance of gaining power.

The OAP contingent has long made up a large proportion of the various wings of the climate extremist armies. Just watch the videos of the road blocking protests.

Nothing justifies this sort of attack, however sincerely deluded they are. The sooner they are correctly designated as terrorist organisations the better.

True. They have rights.
But they don’t have the right to do what they did.
They should be tried and convicted and serve the longest prison term UK laws allow.
No early release due to their age.

False. Individual rights were not part of the original Magna Carta. It codified some of the relationships between the crown and barons.

Yes it did include some individual rights. clause 39: “No man shall be taken, imprisoned, outlawed, banished or in any way destroyed, nor will we proceed against or prosecute him, except by the lawful judgement of his peers or by the law of the land.”

The clause was a reaction to the starving to death in prison of Maud de St Valery and her son William, because of verbal criticism of King John by Maud. Of course, the clause still said “man” not “man or woman”.

It’s possible that “man” had a more general meaning then. In older English, a wife was wif-man and a husband was hus-man.

The phrase “All Men are created equal” did not mean “ONLY men are created equal” when it was written.
(But it took awhile for that intent to approach reality.)

It’s only a fairly recent development that terms like “Mankind” used in the (relatively recent) past did not mean “humankind”.

No, It did not refer to commoners but to peers of the realm. Do your research.
Later documents would include common rights but the aforementioned Magna Carta did not. Spin it any way you like to suit your agenda.

These Visigoths will continue destroying art treasures until the law does enough to deter them.

Start sending them to prison with no possibility of parole for 20 years, and the problem should go away. If it doesn’t, raise that to 30 or 40. Whatever it takes.

No one interposed themselves between the women and the display. Who took the video? Some on-looker? One other guy was also videoing and the guard was on the phone making a report.

It’s going to take physical intervention to finally stop these physical abuses.

There was a guard standing off to the side who didn’t raise a finger to stop them.

Why stop here? Why don’t these seniors and other kooks like them go after the Tower of London, Windsor Castle and the Eiffel Tower into the bargain; and since China, India, and the US contribute about half of global emissions, the Great Wall, the Taj Mahal and the Statue of Liberty should be next on the list. If such actions don’t slow fossil fuel consumption, nothing will.

If there is no oil, what fuel could be used for firetrucks? How about 200 proof alcohol made by the Scots!

Jim Masterson
Reply to  Harold Pierce

Gasoline has more energy content, but I don’t think Scots should drink it. The fuel in the old alcohol-powered torpedoes was 200 proof ethanol. The term “torpedo juice” referred to the fuel. Sailors would siphon off the fuel for recreational use, and the torpedoes wouldn’t run as far when launched. They solved the problem by denaturing the alcohol–but then some sailors were poisoned when they drank it. Modern torpedoes are electric, and they don’t leave a vapor trail like the older steam-driven torpedoes. We used the Mark 46 torpedoes on P-3s.

Old women embarrassing all women by their crass stupidity and lack of any science-based knowledge. It’s the “vibe” that matters apparently. I suggest shipping them back to their homes, removing anything from those homes that has been invented since the Magna Carta – including modern clothing and any income from the government – and leaving them to their fate. They have already outlived women of that time by more than 40 years on average.
