From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT
By Paul Homewood

The BBC has been criticised for the colour scale it uses to represent temperatures, with lows of 11C shown as yellow while 41C is depicted as dark red.
The broadcaster has triggered confusion among some viewers with its temperature contour map, which switches to orange when temperatures hit 13C.
The colour scheme was introduced in 2017, with the BBC at the time saying it was intended to help those with colour blindness.
Toby Young, the founder of website The Daily Sceptic, suggested that the BBC was “going a bit far”.
“How is it going to represent temperatures above 20C? Fireballs?” he said.
A weather forecast on Tuesday night showed most of the country yellow and orange for Wednesday when temperatures were predicted to hit as high as 20C.
One viewer wrote on social media that the system was “utterly farcical”.
“I’m not a massive conspiracy theorist but I have to agree with those who castigate the utterly ludicrous use of bright yellow and orange/red on the weather maps to indicate temperatures of 18/19 degrees!” the viewer wrote.
Another wrote that the BBC “need to give their heads a collective wobble”.
“Since when has 13C warranted yellow/orange on the weather map?!” the viewer wrote.
A BBC spokesman said: “The colours used now range from blue for the coldest temperatures through to red for the hottest temperatures as these colours are easier to see if you live with colour blindness.”
Last year, the broadcaster was forced to clarify its colour scheme after viewers suggested that it had increased the intensity of the map to raise alarm over increasing temperatures.
An image that went viral at the time contrasted a weather map from August 2003 showing temperatures up to 35C with an image from 2016 showing temperatures up to 33C.

Only a little relatedly, but interesting —
The UAH monthly satellite temperatures for April 2024 are out, thanks to Dr Roy Spencer and colleagues.
While the global lower troposphere temperature rose to be among the highest months, if not THE highest month, the lower troposphere over Australia cooled sharply.
The “pause”, Viscount Monckton style, over Australia is 8 years 8 months to now, without a warming trend, but with a small cooling trend.
Children, who do not remember much until they pass 3 years old, need to be older than about 12 to have felt the impact of alleged global warming if they have stayed in one spot in Australia, as discerned from the measurement of atmospheric temperatures by satellite this way.
Yet, by many accounts, they are schooled to think that they have faced an existential crisis from global warming.
It is not hard to make the penny drop for children, but too many adult teachers need to think about this graph, which might disagree with their own education.
Geoff S
Definitely related Geoff. It’s all part of the same propaganda machine.
Lord M has been notably silent about his use of short term trends in UAH of late. Maybe because every one of his various chosen start dates now shows a strong warming trend.
Perhaps let the shipwrecks of others be your land marks?
Re the UAH April update: where is it, WUWT? Dr Spencer put it out 24 hours ago.
And yes, it was the warmest anomaly on record for any month. (Might have answered my own question there.)
Bow down to the El Nino.
King of warming !!
Or do you deny this is still part of the El Nino event ?
Do you have some evidence of human CO2 causation ?
You have never had any before. Why do you keep on failing to produce any!
It’s not nice to challenge Rusty on his religious beliefs bnice!
Circumstantial. CO2 was in the area, so guilty!
“And yes, it was the warmest anomaly on record for any month. “
Where?
Are you really including the British isles in that ludicrous statement?
I’ll send you my gas bill – it might wake you up.
Global average. Take it up with UAH.
Global average?
Charlatan
Just going by what UAH report and WUWT re-publish and update monthly.
Take it up with the management here or with Roy Spencer if you disagree (you won’t).
Globally speaking the average human has one breast and one ball (except recently when everything seems to be on the table lol)
No such thing as an average then?
That’ll cause a few planning problems….
Who said there was no such thing as an average?
Not when you’re talking about temperatures from disparate locations. Averaging those is scientific fraud. I don’t care who does it. It’s bad.
Still a TOTAL FAILURE to produce any evidence of human causation.
You really are way past being pathetic. !!
Re: “a strong warming trend” (emphasis mine)
Nonsense.
Compared to zero, yes.
Sorry fool.
A very weak warming, happening only at El Nino events
Absolutely zero evidence of any human causation.. as you keep showing us.
This is the first paragraph of the description of this month’s UAH temp graph:
“This global temperature record from 1979 shows a modest and unalarming 0.14° Celsius rise per decade (0.25⁰ Fahrenheit rise per decade) that is not accelerating.”
Dr Spencer’s opening paragraph is
What you are quoting is spin from an anonymous author. How do you quantify what is modest and unalarming?
The trend is wrong in any event – it’s currently 0.15°C / decade. Nor is there any way of saying it is not accelerating, or decelerating. The best you can say is that any change is not statistically significant. But that never stops the dozens of monthly, “warming has paused” articles.
The warming is basically un-noticable by anyone except a very accurate thermometer.
“Modest” warming is an over-statement.
Tree lines, permafrost peat shows we are still in a rather cool period of the Holocene… so absolutely nothing to be alarmed about unless you are a brain-washed moron.
Do you have any evidence of the energy released by the current El Nino event having any human causation?
Or do you concur that this is totally natural climate variability.
Notice the total non-response to requests for evidence of human causation.
It really is getting hilarious to watch their pathetic no-brain, chicken-little antics.
Bellman, you continue to misrepresent Monckton, as usual. Monckton actually predicted an end to the pause last year.
This is the first paragraph of the description of this month’s UAH temp graph:
“This global temperature record from 1979 shows a modest and unalarming 0.14° Celsius rise per decade (0.25⁰ Fahrenheit rise per decade) that is not accelerating.”
Only it isn’t.
You didn’t check it, did you?
That’s one thing that forever singles you fake skepticks out. If something looks like you want it to look you will never check it for yourselves.
This being the result.
He’s talking about WUWT’s own spin.
Thanks.
They have their own version of what Roy Spencer says now?
The rabbit hole deepens.
Still absolutely ZERO EVIDENCE OF ANY HUMAN CAUSATION
By the absence of any such evidence, you have both now admitted that this slight warming is totally natural effect of strong El Nino events.
Your AGW paymasters will not be happy !
“Just going by what UAH report and WUWT re-publish and update monthly.
Take it up with the management here or with Roy Spencer if you disagree (you won’t).”
I made no assertions either way, I just pointed you to what WUWT re-publish and update monthly that’s all. I think you see and assume everyone who doesn’t agree with you is out to get you.
TFN… Lord M uses as his starting point the current temperature reading and then works backward till he reaches a point where the trend is no longer zero. What is so hard to understand about that. Lord M does not pick a point and work forward.
TFN,
It might be better time spent to research why Australia responds so differently to many other land masses of similar size. This CO2 is long described as well-mixed, so one might expect a rather uniform effect from place to place. What is more, the BOM land surface temperatures are much the same texture as this UAH pattern. So, please explain the process by which the CO2 control knob has different settings from place to place. Geoff S
It doesn’t. Long-term Australia is warming in line with global observations, including UAH (faster in UAH, actually).
As shero shows Australia’s only warming comes from the El Nino event..
Even with the very strong El Nino event, Australia has a COOLING trend since the last El Nino.
And we all know that this is totally natural, because even the most ardent AGW catastrophists, like you, are totally incapable of presenting any evidence of human causation.
“The “pause”, Viscount Monckton style, over Australia is 8 years 8 months to now, without a warming trend, but with a small cooling trend.”
Given how bad this technique is for global averages, why would you think it’s any better for a small much more variable part of the globe?
The overall trend since December 1978 is 0.19°C / decade, faster than the global average.
Since May 2010, it’s been +0.47°C / decade.
Over the last 5 years it’s been +0.74°C / decade.
You can always pick start dates that will give meaningless trends.
“Global average” and “global climate” is a BS construct used by the extreme left to manipulate and make up data
I see we are at the “math is a communist plot” stage of the argument.
Never mind that I was talking about Australian average temperatures, not the extreme left global averages.
Maths is maths.
What the extreme left chooses to do with the results is manipulation
That extreme left manipulation of, checks notes, averaging values.
Dr Roy Spencer is the extreme left wing mastermind who keeps producing all these global average BS constructions. Lord Monckton keeps manipulating the global average to produce genuinely BS pauses – clearly another of these extreme left wing types.
Spencer and Monckton produce data, available to everyone and anyone who wants to check.
Extreme left-wing “scientists” should take note and stop manipulating the data to suit their personal agendas.
Oh, my. I MUST print this out for the next time I’m accused of being a shill for Big Oil!
Averaging temperatures, intensive properties, is scientific fraud.
Then maybe WUWT should stop reporting UAH global averages.
LAUGH — OUT — LOUD, B-man. As if 5 years is meaningful for a decadal trend.
Of course, you can always waste everyone’s time with “meaningless trends.”
“As if 5 years is meaningful for a decadal trend.”
It’s completely meaningless – that’s the point. Just like all the cherry-picked “pauses”.
Your analogy fails at: “just like.” No. Unlike your goofy “trend,” the STOPS in warming not “meaningless.” They correctly state the state of the surface temperature data. (That’s all. They do not pretend to predict or project.)
Application to AGW: the GCM simulations do not even project any slowing of the warming rate, much less a complete STOP lasting years.
Ah, I keep forgetting – all trends are meaningless, unless they show you what you want to see. Any trend of zero, must be correctly stating the state of the surface temperature, regardless of the size of the uncertainties in that trend. (Or if it’s even showing surface temperature).
So, a trend based on a less than one year El Nino event.. is even more meaningless.
You have just destroyed any “trend” argument your tiny AGW brain-washed mind might want to make.
Seems you have finally realised that all your trends are all based on El Nino events… so funny !
You did know that outside those El Nino events..
… the UAH data shows basically ZERO TREND.
Lol. Rather to be pitied than scorned.
It’ been hovering around 0.9 above the base line for 7 months now.
Question… Do you believe this spike is caused by co2?
If so, please explain the mechanism.
Question… Do you believe the temperature spike will come back down to around the 0.2 mark or will it stay up there?
Use those EL Ninos for all you are worth
You know they are all you have.
Found any evidence of human causation yet.
Or are you still just an empty sack of putrid hot air. !!
And yes, between those El Nino events, UAH is basically ZERO TREND…
.. for 36 of the 45 years fall in that category..
Ignoring the full sentence of what I actually said to make a pointless point.
PROVING that you know I am correct.
So funny .. Now take your face out of that cow-pat !!
“You did know that outside those El Nino events..
… the UAH data shows basically ZERO TREND.”
Here’s the UAH Australia data in full.
Using dots to hide the fact that up until the El Nino, Australia had a slight cooling trend from 1998-2016 and strong cooling trend since the 2016 El Nino step until the current El Nino..
Was that caused by humans, too ??
Oh wait.. you haven’t shown any human causation for anything yet. !!
and from 2016- early 2023
No wonder the climate scammer love El Ninos so much
They are the only warming in the satellite data, so they have to try their scam using those El Ninos whenever they possibly can.
But the only people they are fooling… is themselves.
“…scam using those El Ninos”
Says someone showing a trend that starts with an El Niño.
Got to keep using those El Niños, don’t you.
He’s a trendologist, it’s what he does.
Still living rent free in your head. Still seems like I’m paying too much.
Bellman,
My start date is today. That is not cherry picking. It is a logical date to choose to update monthly data releases. Geoff S
And how did you pick the “end” date?
And how does the pause end 8 years before it started?
Poor bellboy, you are, yet again, showing that you are mathematical imbecile, with zero clue of what is being calculated.
Please keep going.. it is hilarious to watch someone so incredibly INEPT. !!
Thank you for the excellent graph and analysis, Mr. Sherrington. Heh, you are clearly over the target. Ol’ T. F. Nail and the B-man came huffing and puffing out of their cave to blast at you with their Kool-Aid-filled squirt guns.😄
TFN, Bellboy, scrxgsy (or whatever that guy’s name is), and Baby Simon 😊
(btw: please stay invisible, guys — this photo of you shows that you are sooooo cute! Your innocent super-cuteness is (for fooling the Great Unthinking Masses) a devastating weapon …. G. Thunberg had nothing on you three.)
Don’t panic! One of the requirements of an AGW trendologist is they must be 100% sans any sense of humor.
The Met Office is even worse.
On their online weather maps, the colours are orange down to about 5 degrees C.
So, according to them, a few degrees above freezing is still hot.
This is what happens when supposedly scientific organisations abandon science.
Chris
In fairness I’ve witnessed blokes in February wearing shorts and flip flops, so they have a point lol
For once, the Blatantly Biased Corporation was up front:
“The graphics we choose depend on the forecast and the story about the weather we are trying to tell.”
Well, I don’t know about you, but where the Waffen BBC is concerned that seems refreshingly honest to me. As they freely admit, it depends on what narrative they wish to impart at any given time. But here’s the thing, nobody bats an eyelid at the obvious bias towards their main weapon of fear and alarm, their two main weapons of fear and alarm and the hopelessness of it all….
Thus far it’s been below average temperatures this spring; not a lot to get up tight about, except the heating bill. But this doesn’t deter the BBC.
“London seeing more days above 30C, experts say
Deadly Dubai floods made worse by climate change
etc”
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cmj34zmwm1zt
And at the soon to slim down favourite rag of the BBC there is outrage at basic common sense.
“Sunak to allow oil and gas exploration at sites intended for offshore wind”
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/02/sunak-to-allow-oil-and-gas-exploration-at-sites-intended-for-offshore-wind
And just to round the outrage off…
“Court strikes down youth climate lawsuit on Biden administration request
Attorney and non-profit founder Julia Olson calls appeals court ruling on lawsuit filed by 21 young people ‘tragic and unjust’”
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/02/youth-climate-lawsuit-juliana-appeals-court
The BBC is a huge concern – physically and ‘mentally’. But the irony is that despite the total stranglehold of media, politics, civil service, institutions, health service etc etc etc they still struggle.
To quote one of my all time heroes….
And so Castles made of sand
Fall in the sea eventually.
Just what you’d expect in an election year… Anything for votes and damn the cause
“Court strikes down youth climate lawsuit on Biden administration request
Attorney and non-profit founder Julia Olson calls appeals court ruling on lawsuit filed by 21 young people ‘tragic and unjust’”
I’ll be honest – this news actually had me in tears – of laughter.
“their main weapon of fear and alarm, their two main weapons of fear and alarm and the hopelessness of it all”
Their THREE main weapons of fear, alarm, the hopelessness of it all, and the guilt of our ancestors…
Don’t forget “surprise”.
“and a fanatical dedication to the
PopeCause”.Unfortunately the BBC’s one brain cell is on a prolonged break (due to persistent neglect) and so I’m pretty certain that they will not understand what the fuss about their weather presenters is.
Your comment seems to imply that they are stupid. They are not. They are propagandists, and know exactly what they are doing.
The BBC, and CNN, MSNBC, ETC, are on a mission. They are dedicated to saving the planet by the education of slow learners, and even indoctrination is therefore warranted. Saving the planet? Maybe not so much, maybe they want the slow learners to freeze in the dark, without food, so they can continue their lifestyle? And, if their lawfare against Trump works, they will be close to success.
The current El Nino has certainly been pumping out one heck of a lot of energy !!!
Started way earlier than usual, climbed quickly and has just “continued”.
I suspect we will see some darker orange areas spreading out from the Tropics.
According to the NOAA ENSO Index, the 1997/98 El Niño started early than this one and was considerably stronger up to this point.
Yet all these new record temps??
It’s almost like there’s something else driving an underlying warming tread.
And it isn’t happening here
Nack to the nonsensical average…
All bar the last day or so (well it is spring), the current El Nino has brought freezing temperatures to my neck of the woods in England
“It’s almost like there’s something else driving an underlying warming tread”
First, this anomalous spike is less than a year old. Second, it’s been connected to El Niño and the Tonga eruption, which injected huge amounts of water vapor into the stratosphere.
As for a warm spring, spring has been late to the party here in Colorado (and much of the Western US)…
Expecting snow showers next week here, which is uncommon for May. Also happened in 2022.
(Utah)
Enso region index is a tiny part of the western Pacific.
It doesn’t say anything about the energy released by the El Nino event
You still haven’t come up with a single bit of evidence of human causation or are you just continuing to yap mindlessly with your pitiful and baseless innuendo and conjectures.!
Whatever pitiful anti-science you are trying to push…
…. you have failed, utterly and completely.. yet again.
“an underlying warming tread.”
You have been shown many times that outside those El Nino… there is basically no warming.
Why continue to DENY what the data shows?
Abject and deliberate ignorance is the only excuse you have.
It’s not the colours that are the issue in the slightest, it’s the allocation of colours to what temperatures that is farcical.
Let’s be frank, 80% of the time, the colours should be pale blue through anaemic yellow, as that would represent average temperatures or a slight deviation.
Blue should be limited to >6C deviations below the mean, dark blue to > 12C below.
Red should be > 6C above the mean and brown to > 12C above the mean.
That would correlate, in mid summer, to red being above 28C around London and brown being above 34C.
In mid winter, blue would be -1C by day or -5C by night, dark blue -7C by day and -11C by night.
These temperatures do occur almost every year for the red and blue designations and quite often in a decade for the dark blue and brown designations.
What we don’t want are implications that entirely normal temperatures should induce any emotion amongst the viewing public other than ‘nothing unusual there, then’.
We all know that the BBC are climate terrorists, deliberately scheming to fuel unhealthy emotions and actually promoting mass depression amongst the young and gullible. I’ve no doubt Keir Starmer would conspire with them if the Gates/Israeli apologist/co-conspirator becomes Prime Minister, but it’s entirely appropriate for the license-paying UK public to be implacable in their contempt for him and the BBC if things don’t change.
He’s had a free ride as non-opposing globalist stooge.
When he becomes PM, he’ll be the focus of every piece of wrath and ire in the UK.
It might teach him a lesson about the effects of being a chameleon during his entire political life.
Especially in the UK
The weather App I’ve been using for some time, Windy, some time ago adopted a color vs temp schema that I found totally absurd. Fortunately, the app allows a user to reprogram the temp vs color schema to one of your own choosing…to wit. The bottom image fitting my personal sensibilities regarding temperature.
What is the weather guy in the photo wearing? Looks like military fatigues…part of the BBC mission?
With those skinny pants, it makes him look like he is wearing clown shoes.
Since the UK now has a Saharan climate thanks to CO2, wearing desert camouflage would seem to be a necessity.
Oh, for the good ol’ days of the black and white TV. 😉
Yeah, back then we would just read the numbers.
Back when the BBC didn’t think we were too stupid to be regularly shown isobars on their charts.
Isotherms, but I get what you meant.
Even TV has become more diverse these days.
So many more pixels on our screens.
And pixies (with green, orange and/or pink hair).
I have noticed this, getting more extreme over recent years with the BBC charts,
Surely anyone with an ounce of common sense would show Dark Blue under say -5C
going through dark red at over 34C with Green and yellow from 11C to 20c
Orange being warm at between 21C and 26 C
I have also noticed the BBC seem to get very excited with recent weather, and take little notice of historical weather facts. especially when it comes the high temperatures.
I have reminded the BBC many times about the recent increase in Arctic Ice, and to the fact that 1976 still holds the record for the hottest summerin the UK and also the Spring, Summer and Autumn of 1959 was the warmest on record.
The BBC are very good miss information and rarely give the true facts.
Not being colour blind I cannot confirm if the colour choices aid comprehension or not. This picture however, is worth a thousand words.
I have had to use appropriate color schemes on my lecture slides when I have had color-blind students, basically you can’t use green:
“The first rule of making a palette for colorblind – avoid combining red and green. So if you’re aiming to create a color blind-friendly palette try to use only two basic hues: blue and red (orange and yellow will also fit). The other colors should be made out of these two hues.”
They did the same kind of color shift in the US a decade or more ago.
False impressions across the spectrum.
55 degrees and on fire!
Pity! Please! Some of us raised in the USA are handicapped when it comes to intuitively knowing how cold or warm XºC is.
Here’s some clarification:
“with lows of 11C shown as yellow while 41C is depicted as dark red.” That is, in real degrees (/sarc), 52ºF and 105ºF.
On my personal scale, 52ºF is quite cool (jacket weather) and 105ºF is blisteringly hot (if in the Caribbean, drop off the stern and snorkel or head for an air-conditioned restaurant for a late lunch and stay through an early dinner). So a nice dark red for over 100ºF is just fine….but 52ºF is not yellowy-warm.
“which switches to orange when temperatures hit 13C.” Hmmm….55ºF — still a bit chilly, definitely not a nice warm orange temperature.
““How is it going to represent temperatures above 20C? Fireballs?” 68ºF — springtime weather — might need a light sweater if sitting in the shade or if it is breezy.
“utterly ludicrous use of bright yellow and orange/red on the weather maps to indicate temperatures of 18/19 degrees!” That, in real degrees, is 65ºF. Maybe t-shirt weather if one is jogging in full sun. But for older folks, sweater-time.

The higher levels of CO2 correlate with lower temperatures and vice versa.
=======
Unfortunately, WUWT largely ignores this and sticks to GHG orthodoxy.
Degrees of Freedom allow individual climate metrics such as temperature to behave opposite to the forcings such as CO2, so long as total energy and momentum is conserved.
Since momentum is linear and energy is squared, any non trivial change will yield 2 possible solutions.
For my fellow Americans:
0 °C = 32.0 °F
5 °C = 41.0 °F
10 °C = 50.0 °F
15 °C = 59.0 °F
19 °C = 66.2 °F
20 °C = 68.0 °F
21 °C = 69.8 °F
Kevin ==> Very kind, sir.
Perhaps a link to a converter from metric to “American” (and vice versa) on the top or side bar would be useful? 😎
°F = °C*1.8+32.
I was also thinking of kilometers to miles, inches to centimeters, grains/gallon to milligrams/liter, etc.
Access to something to quickly make the conversions on both sides of “the pond”.
Not a big deal, but it might be useful for the readers.
Those colors remind me of Halloween.
Scary.
(But nothing to be afraid of.)
“How is it going to represent temperatures above 20C? Fireballs?” he said.
They’ll go to infrared. So hot you can’t see it.
“Climate Change causes blindness!” will be the next headline.
It looks like the UK might be trying to overtake Germany for first place in the global race for countries trying to move from “first world” to “third world”.
Dismantling industry. Rising costs. Endless labor strikes.
The elections this week feature the Conservative party, which used to be somewhat conservative, losing a vast chunk of their representation because they embraced the race to irrelevance just as much as the green party.
On the other hand, big gains for the Labour party, except that they’re receiving harsh criticism for not being antisemitic enough for their newer voters. Umm… the party of Jeremy Corbyn is not calling for the destruction of Israel fast enough – so their gains were tempered a bit by new support for parties that Karl Marx himself might find too radically left.
I’ve lived in the US most of my life, but hold dual citizenship in the UK. I don’t think that’s going to come in handy in my remaining lifetime. Who knew Brexit actually meant trying to recreate New Delhi, mass poverty surrounding the iconic walls protecting Kensington Palace and the king.
I’ve seen the same here in the US and complained just as loudly.
They beclown themselves trying to make people believe there is a climate crisis by making normal temperatures appear “scary”.
Sadly, they seem to fool a lot of people.
Yes, if a lie is repeated often enough, some people are going to believe it.
When the official organs of information for a society (government, media, entertainment) repeats a lie, that makes it even more believable in some people’s eyes, and gives the Liars more of an ability to manipulate the listeners.
These “Voices of Authority” pose the greatest danger to our personal freedoms because they mislead people into voting for their own destruction by putting radical leftists in charge of their future.
We’ve had three years of radical leftist rule in the United States. How do you like it? Want more of it?
If you don’t like the current situation, then don’t vote for radical leftists/Democrats. Electing radical Democrats is what brought about this situation in the first place. It’s that simple.
Radical Democrats are not fit to lead the nation. They have proven it over and over and over again. They screw things up, and Republicans/Conservatives have to come in and clean it all up, over and over and over again. And here we go again. Let’s end this Spiral of Stupidity by never electing another radical Democrat to office, down to, and including Dog Catcher. That will fix the problem.
Those temperatures in Britain on the BBC would, in Australia, be represented by Green and Blue, not Orange and Yellow. Colour blind viewers would be able to read the numbers easily and form their own opinions.
