Tesla’s Berlin Plant Remains Shut Down After Eco-Terrorism…Over Half A Billion Euros Damage

From the NoTricksZone

By P Gosselin

Yesterday’s eco-terrorism attack will cause Tesla to shut down its Berlin plant until the end of the week… 12,000 employees idle…damage could reach over half a billion euros!

Some political leaders vow swift, harsh justice

The latest news today report that Europe’s only Tesla plant, located in Grünheide near Berlin, still remains closed after yesterday’s massive eco-terrorism attack by the extreme leftwing “Vulkan Group”.

See yesterday’s post here.

The attack on a power transmission tower caused a power outage at the Tesla plant and resulted in the deployment of firefighters, police and even an explosives special unit in Grünheide.

There was also a blackout for thousands of residents in the region, according to media outlets.

Nius.de here reports the damage will run in the upper 9-digit range.

According to Nius.de here:

The fire broke out in a transformer near Gosen-Neu Zittau at around 4:50 a.m., one hour before the start of the shift. The nearby small town of Erkner and parts of Berlin were also without power yesterday, the police told Bild. And: Surrounding areas of Woltersdorf, Gosen-Neu Zittau, Freienbrink, Fangschleuse, Wilhelmshagen and Rahnsdorf were also affected by the power outage.”

The Tesla plant manager, André Thierig, said all 12,000 employees had to be sent home on Tuesday and are not expected to return to work this week.

Threat of explosives

Moreover, Germany’s online Bild reports that “the emergency crews had to withdraw when they discovered an activist tent that was emblazoned with the words ‘Explosive ordnance buried here!’”

The Brandenburg Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (KMBD) had to be deployed.

Reaction form politicians was swift and harsh: “This has nothing to do with protest. These are criminals,” said Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) on the RBB program Brandenburg aktuell on Tuesday evening. “They are criminals and we will hunt them down with all the means our constitutional state has at its disposal.”

I’m quite confused by this story.

I thought Telsa claimed to be very eco-friendly

The plant’s power however might come from coal or gas.

The eco-loonies responsible said something fairly incoherent about the plant using too much water and causing a local drought. I don’t think we should expect a rational explanation from them.
I wonder how the German ‘occupy heated swimming pools’ eco-loony protest went?

There was a previous article saying Tesla’s expansion plans would require cutting down part of a forest. I assume the protesters will also be protesting wind turbines and solar farms.

Those protesters have been living in tents and treehouses in the forest where Tesla has plans to expand. I don’t think they’re from the same protest groups.

This is a statement against capitalism, and against success.

It has nothing to do with environmentalism.

Now imagine that happening to an Amazon or Microsoft or Google data center – there goes the internet, or at least a huge chunk of functionality, and it’s not obvious what will go down until it goes down.

Server farms in OR and WA are close to dams, but the transmission lines are still vulnerable. AMZN’s first data centers in my area were kept secret while under construction. Now there are too many to hide.

GOOG’s and AAPL’s were too visible to hide.

Eco-loons with good explosives could take out the dams and cripple the internet. Win-win for them.

good explosives
There are numerous dams on the Columbia River and “taking out” one with explosives could cause a domino-like effect. The result would be thousands of people dead and the socio/economic life in the states of Oregon and Washington would be destroyed.
On the map, the nearest dam to the main server farms in Quincy, WA is near the left center – a yellow dot — named Rock Island

The internet started as a military project. Redundancy and the ability to survive damage without failing were key components of the design. That is, there are many routes by which information can flow from point A to point B. For any two points A and B.

True, but if point A is completely missing due to a power failure, and the information you need is stored on point A, then it doesn’t matter how many routes there are.

Transformers and power pylons/towers aren’t cheap.

But yes, lost production – and lost wages probably too, counting on things like union contracts and the local/national labour laws. Every worker might get paid for the day or 4 hours, and then be left with nothing until the plant starts up. Employment insurance might have an unpaid waiting period of 1 or 2 weeks (based on my Canadian experience, their mileage will vary)

MarkW

The lost production ripples through the economy. Parts that Tesla would have bought in order to make those cars aren’t being purchased, which means losses for Tesla’s suppliers.
Workers who aren’t working, aren’t getting paid, so they have to cut back their purchases as well.

Reply to  Rud Istvan
March 7, 2024 6:51 pm

There are obviously significant property damages, though perhaps not to Tesla property. There are large response and repair costs that will have to be paid by the public because, even if the activists are found, they are unlikely to be able to cover those costs — unless some wealthy backer(s), such as the one for “Just Stop Oil” can be identified. That last possibility would really be satisfying if said backer(s) were reduced to poverty.

My thought was that the activists, having occupied the forest, had trashed and made it toxic. Something like a SuperFund Site. Trees and soil will have to be removed and the area covered with a deep layer of clean dirt.

Do you recall the estimates, based on the 21st century capacity factor in New Your State for wind and solar facilities, that covering the entire site (1440 acres?) of a proposed semiconductor plant in upstate New York with solar panels would produce 1% of the plant’s power needs? From the same data base, covering the site with wind turbines would produce less than 1% of the needed electricity.

Another EV company goes bankrupt.

BC Transit says it will not be adding 10 electric buses to its Victoria fleet anytime soon after its original supplier filed for bankruptcy.

In 2022, BC Transit said it was buying 10 electric buses from California-based company Proterra, with the EVs slated to hit the roads of Victoria in fall 2023
