Oxford Researcher: Frequent Intense Cold Spells are Caused by Global Warming

Essay by Eric Worrall

Global warming may be behind an increase in the frequency and intensity of cold spells

One less obvious consequence of global warming is also getting growing attention from scientists: a potential increase in the intensity and frequency of winter cold snaps in the northern hemisphere.

Weather phenomena like the Beast from the East in winter 2018, the cold spell of Arctic air that reached as far South as Texas in February 2021, or the storm that left Madrid and Athens unusually covered in snow for days in early 2021 are becoming more common.

Some of the mechanisms that lead to their occurrence are strengthened by global warming. Key climate mechanisms, like exchanges of energy and air masses between different altitude ranges in the atmosphere, are evolving in ways expected to cause an increase in both the intensity and duration of cold snaps. These link to the behaviour of a region in the high atmosphere called the stratosphere.

Global warming makes extreme weather more extreme, and scientific studies are starting to provide proof that this also applies to extreme winter cold spells. Developing the best possible modelling tools is essential to predict the evolution of extreme weather events in the coming years so that we can be better prepared for them.

What can I say? CO2 truly is the magic molecule. Hot or cold, if you don’t like the weather, CO2 is to blame.

Well, one hing for you to point out is that most extreme weather in the northern hemisphere is dominated by the polar vortex
https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold-polar-vortex
and that is influenced by solar and volcanic factors, no anthropogenic signal has been found influencing the polar vortex.

Good new is bad news.
No news is bad news.
Bad news is good news and gets ad clicks.

What is there to understand?

We have always been at war with Oceania.
At least until the revised RightThink Dictionary is released.

The arctic cold snap in 2021 in Texas was a classic textbook polar vortex disruption. The Shevuluch
Volcano erupted in December of 2020 sending ash very high into the stratosphere above the
arctic circle. It was noted here by regular poster “Vuc” who accurately predicted the
cold snap. The vortex disruption by the ash was documented here on WUWT in real time
via space shots. Someone needs to send this info to Oxford..not that it would change any
minds there.

According to the global circualtion models, rising CO2 forcing should be causing a stronger polar vortex through a positive influence on the Northern Annular Mode.

There are so many signals for lay people that they must stop trusting authority and “experts”, but rather thinks for themselves and apply some logic. This is a prime example. “The warming will make you cold” theory is clearly a science-illiterate sad joke from someone who was able to attain the title of Senior Researcher in a prestigious UK university. There are no standards any more for doing real science or being a responsible leader or policy maker. The circus has come to town to stay and only an angry mob of injured citizens and voters can stop this madness.

If it’s warmer or colder, that’s global warming. If it’s wetter or drier, that’s global warming. If it’s windy or calm, that’s global warming. If it’s sunny or cloudy, that’s global warming. The “science” is settled. Any questions?
