“The climate crisis is not gender neutral”, says WMO’s Celeste Saulo

The old joke continues: World To End Tomorrow: Women, Minorities Hardest Hit

As my tipster writes:

To think the WMO used to be a respected scientific organization….

MM

In a keynote address at the launch of the International Gender Champions Climate Impact Group, Celeste Saulo, secretary-general of the WMO, stated that women and men are affected differently by weather and climate, and therefore need gender-sensitive information and services.

Since taking office at the start of 2024, Saulo has stated that one of her priorities is to foster greater diversity within the WMO, ensuring equitable representation across gender, regional and cultural lines. She is committed to implementing the WMO Gender Equality Policy which was updated in 2023.

https://www.meteorologicaltechnologyinternational.com/news/world-meteorological-organization/the-climate-crisis-is-not-gender-neutral.html

Many of WMO’s programs to strengthen climate adaptation seek to address the barriers faced by women and marginalized communities in accessing resources and decision making tools. For instance, the Fiji Meteorological Service – in line with government policy – is working to mainstream gender in the provision of early warning systems thanks to the support of partners like Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS).

Saulo continued, “I am determined to use my voice as an international gender champion to ensure that gender considerations are mainstreamed in climate policies. We have no time to lose. We stand at the intersection of inequality and climate change, and our strategies must reflect the urgency of the times.

There’s not much to say about this, except to repeat the tipster’s quote

 “need gender-sensitive information and services”
I understand fully, with 192 genders and counting, the need becomes overwhelming.

I was just about to say that.
If “Women” are more affected than “Men” then where does a Biological Man fall on the affected list?
Least affected?
If Male born are Trans Females more affected?
Or being male biologically only similarly affected?
How did they determine that Cis White Males are least affected?
Sounds RacioSexually discriminatory to me.

Of course it’s not gender neutral because if the “climate crisis” doesn’t exist in the first place, neither males nor females are affected by it regardless. Even if there were one, it hasn’t had any negative effect on global life expectancy since the World Health Organization has just reported that this has increased from 67 to 73 during the first two decades of this century.

February 25, 2024 6:16 pm

1.. Need to define what “gender” means, what a “man” is, and what a “woman” is.. good luck with that 😉

2.. If a man can be a woman, and a woman can be a man… how can you possibly tell if there is “gender inequity” !

I think “gender” means something that has to do with confusing the output of a kitchen “blender” with what was originally put into it.
A school’s blender can easily confuse what is a banana with what is honey pot (Sorry. Couldn’t come up with anything better!)
The confusion of hormones hitting during puberty be damned! We’ll jump in and convince them a few hormone inhibitor shots will solve all their issues!
“Nature’s course” doesn’t ‘understand you!”
Hit the blend button.
To them, it’s the output that matters.
One mixed up kid.

therefore need gender-sensitive information…

This is what happens when Truth and honesty are no longer in currency. Lies and deception have to be carefully crafted on a group-identity basis. The lies that have to be told to a cis-maie have to be quite different than to a trans-man or trans-woman. A completely different lie has to be made for non-binary, and don’t leave out the gender-fluid who are the gender equivalent of Schrödinger’s cat.

Fiji Meteorological Service – in line with government policy – is working to mainstream gender in the provision of early warning systems.

So what are they going to do, make all the warning alarm really high pitch so men cannot hear them?

WMO, stated that women and men are affected differently by weather and climate, and therefore need gender-sensitive information and services.

Don’t remember having to know the “gender” when solving any of those Thermodynamic problems.

February 25, 2024 6:51 pm

The WMO redefined “climate” to be only 30 years now, instead of the thousands to millions of years most of us were taught.

I guess now one has to say “long-term climate” if one is talking about the older definition.

I guess the 2.56 million-year ice age the Earth is in, in an 11,700-year-old interglacial period, with 20 percent of the land frozen would be the long-term climate.

The 30-year definition was selected, somewhat arbitrarily, to filter out the effect of such short-range phenomena as ENSO, PDO, and AMO. But, of course, there are no doubt other oscillations with longer range than 30 years, so what we may see as ‘long-term climate change’ may also include non-long term factors.

The religion demands compliance with the whole catechism. Climate change is but one article of faith, intersectionality with gender is another.

‘[Celeste] Saulo said, “Women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate change and weather-related disasters” […] To demonstrate her point, Saulo highlighted how more women than men died in the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 … ’ (Elizabeth Baker).
Apparently earthquakes and tsunamis are now accepted as impacts of the climate crisis engulfing the planet, at least according to the secretary-general of the WMO.
Incidentally according to Wiki the confirmed death toll of the Indian Ocean Tsunami was 184,167 while the estimated death toll was 227,898, so the gender breakdown of overall deaths is unknown.

Reply to  Chris Hanley
February 26, 2024 3:31 am

So Ms Saulo is lying about more women dying in the tsumani than men because there is no demographic breakdown, and she is confused about what makes up the weather wrongfully connecting tsumanis with climate change.

Just what we would expect from an organization like the WMO, in today’s world..

Does the United States send money to fund the WMO? If so, we should stop. We are not getting our money’s worth. The money is going to fund fanatics and promote delusional ideas. This is not in the interests of the United States.

Reply to  Chris Hanley
February 26, 2024 5:50 am

Ignoring the eye-popping conflation of geological processes with weather (and climate), the only evidence I’ve found for Celeste Saulo’s claim that women were disproportionately affected by the Boxing Day tsunami comes from Oxfam. According to that report, the reason for the disproportionate number of women killed was entirely an accident of the day of the week, the time of day, and the traditional roles of men and women in one small geographic area. Cudely summarised: the men were safe at sea in boats or inland on errands, while many women were on the shoreline preparing to receive the catch or washing. At another time on another day it could have turned out very different.

Quite what gender-sensitive information and services the WMO or International Gender Champions Climate Impact Group imagines it could offer for such obscure circumstances is hard to guess.

After the goof was pointed out, TWC tried to excuse it by saying Jim Slidell(?) had a balance problem.

Equality has already been established by Mother Nature.

In the US, the CDC says that in 2021, men lived to 73 while women lived to 79. Perhaps all the rough and poor living from the climate crisis affects men more than women? Then another Federal agency, NOAA says their Climate Reference Network shows that temperature in the US has not changed since 2005. Who to believe?

February 26, 2024 6:18 am

How would a large dinosaur ending asteroid affect women and marginalized communities? I’m guessing they would be adversely affected and disproportionately based of race and gender? In the weeks leading up to impact there would be an inordinate increase in micro-aggressions requiring additional staffing of NGOs to provide translators and trigger warning specialists carefully selected to look like women and marginalized communities. In the days before impact there will be outbreaks of the inappropriate use of ‘jazz-hands’ thus causing more distress and actual harms. All companies will be required to give impact statements to demonstrate how they will be inclusive during and give examples of where they have helped an aboriginal bushmen make important financial and strategic decisions, while acknowledging that the asteroid was caused by racism and colonialism. In the hours prior to impact face masks must be worn and everyone must stay in doors 4 metres away from everyone else, and everyone must have had all vaccines and be fully boosted.

There is some truth there. The advent of affordable electrical energy has fostered development of tools freeing women from the formally full time job of maintaining a household, freeing many to enter the workforce and pursue careers.

February 26, 2024 8:57 am

“Celeste Saulo, secretary-general of the WMO, stated that women and men are affected differently by weather and climate, and therefore need gender-sensitive information and services.”

I thought “women and men” wasn’t a thing anymore. What kind of “gender champion” wants to stick us all back in the bifocal gender straight jacket again? I want to know how the mild warming of the past 150 years is going to mess with my identification as an ambidextrous, throat singing, gender expansive, vegan, astrosentient, Llama with three legs. That’s the sort of problem these suppose scientists should be working on, not worrying about whether the presence of testis and extra fur will provide a survival advantage when the air conditioning is suboptimal.
