Essay by Eric Worrall
Michael Mann appears to have mistaken a left wing electoral cycle maximum for a hockey stick.
Australia’s climate battle has moved on – leaving deniers behind
Michael Mann
at 8 Apr 2023 01.00 AESTNotwithstanding some absurd outbursts from the fringe, the fight is now over what form climate change action should take.
I departed Australia three years ago, cutting my sabbatical short as Covid-19 spread and lockdowns ensued. I had just lived through Black Summer, a climate change-fueled disaster marked by unprecedented heat, withering drought and destructive and deadly bushfires. Though I had come to Australia to research the impacts of climate change on extreme weather events, it instead became my lived experience.
The governing Coalition had left a trail of death and destruction, both figuratively and literally. Thousands of homes were destroyed, dozens of lives lost, 24 million hectares burned, and Australia was shunned from an international climate summit over the then prime minister Scott Morrison’s climate intransigence. Meanwhile, the rightwing Murdoch media machine continued to spew climate disinformation, cynically blaming the devastation on arson and “back-burning”. Things appeared pretty bleak. Yet at the same time, I sensed that something had changed.
…
The good news? After nearly a decade, Australia once again has a meaningful climate policy, after ongoing and somewhat heated negotiations between the Albanese government and the Greens. One can quibble over whether it goes far enough. But Greens leader Adam Bandt put it this way: “To everyone who is despairing about the future and wants real climate action, today you should have a spring in your step, because it shows we can take on the coal and gas corporations and win.”

As we approach the one year anniversary of the left wing Albanese victory, with Albanese riding high on a recent stunning by-election win, it is understandable that Mann is getting excited by a short subset of available data.
But history teaches caution. Kevin Rudd rode to victory on a large wave of support in 2007, with promises of solving the climate crisis. But a series of economic and political missteps led to him losing his leadership role in 2010, briefly regaining it in 2013, only to be wiped out in 2013 by conservative climate skeptic Tony Abbott.
Will Albanese go the same way as Rudd? Sadly it is possible he will win a second term. The Conservative opposition in Australia is deeply fractured thanks to reckless attempts by mainstream conservative Liberal and National Party leaders to swing too far to the left, such as their unconvincing embrace of Net Zero, just before the last federal election.
Conservatives will eventually regroup, and Albanese will stumble. There are already storm clouds on Albanese’s horizon in the form of looming energy shortages. Sooner or later these problems will substantially impact the lives of ordinary Australians.
Aussie voters are no different to other countries, when we feel economic pain, lose our jobs, or suffer housing insecurity, we lash out at whoever is in charge.
When the pendulum finally swings back to the right, we can all look forward to reading tiresome essays from Mann about what a missed opportunity the Albanese years were.

What warming trend did you feel during your time here, Dr Mann?
If your ideology makes you mistrust UAH, look at Australia’s own Bureau of Meteorology adjusted ACORN-SAT data. More cooling over the last decade!

Its now a religious faith not a science and Mann is its archbishop. All the numbers will prove nothing if the archbishop says more penance is required, nay essential
What usually happens that after 6 or 9 years of the current government the CO2 released – the devils liquor- wont have changed much at all.
In medieval times climate change and bad harvests were blamed on witches and not praying hard enough. Nothing has changed
There may be more truth than you realized in your assertion that it is now a religious cult. Greta Tone Deaf will be awarded an honorary Doctorate of DIVINITY from the WOKE University of Helsinki’s (emphasis on HELL) theology department in late Spring.
Well this….. Woman 👠 has been very busy, i found one reference to her taking at least an year off from school after 9th grade.at age 16 (Born 2003).
But She-it’s CV has been growing !!!
Ms Greta Thunberg
Thunberg received a Doctor of Laws.

Do they give out theology degrees to those who want to burn the heretics.
It’s laughable.
she’ll probably be given a professorship at Hah-vid soon or maybe MIT

Mann is a worthless tool.
Mann is a worthles stool
Mann is a worthy ghoul.
One small stool for man, one giant stool of Mann kind.
Mann is a worthless toadstool!
There should be a rule banning eco-terrorists from entering Australia. They are causing Post traumatic Stress Disorder in our children (and others?).
Some might even be suffering Pre Traumatic Stress Delusion
Salute!
Hope all had a great Easter and associated traditions from everyone.
The thing about Mann’s comments that disturb me is they appear more political than scientific.
My hope is the looming cool change and what the U.S. is going thru now with cool weather, coupled with rising energy costs and inflation will cause many folks to look at facts. They will look at past history when temperatures were hotter/cooler and somehow we survived and prospered.
Gums sends…
Ordinary folks will look at facts but the politicians won’t. Here in Woke-achusetts, I doubt there is a single politician at any level of government who will disagree with Mann. And all the bureaucracies- and all the MSM which makes up virtually all the media in this state. This state has gone 100% down the rabbit hole of the climate cult. The rest of New England and NY state is much the same.
The entire upper East coast is hard at work changing the national symbol from the Minced Bald Eagle ala the useless Wind Turbines to the DEAD WHALE from all the siting activity for Offshore Wind Turbines.
“More political than scientific”.
Yes, and far more delusional than either.
The problem is with Australian Conservative parties, is they are a bunch of bedwetters. Unfortunately the former hardman of the Liberal party and now its leader Peter Dutton has become one as well.
Marketing strategies & tactics have now supplanted the founding principles that used to steer political parties.
To have no core principles at all is now a distinct electoral advantage for politicians.
“There go my people. As a leader I must follow them”
sounds like a shortage of testosterone- maybe the greens are putting something in the water supply
Like the ‘D1e Hard’ movie series the Australian politico-economic plot has been done to de@th, being pretty old now I’ve lost interest.
Except for its comic value.
What a coincidence, science is moving on without Mann.
Useful idiot personified.
If only he were useful.
Why would he intepret any data set, in this case political, any differently to the way he interpreted the data he used of the hockey stick?
Ignore the bits which oppose your view and cherry pick to fit your narrative.
Mann is disgusting and an ignoramus.
Ignoramus or Ignoranus
Conservatives in Australian states and federally (main party strangely called the Liberal Party) get elected when the economy tanks. They fix the finances, get the economy going, then, just when things are getting good, they get elected out because they are accused of doing nothing, building nothing.
Then the socialists (Labor Party, Greens) undo everything by spending wildly and irresponsibly and so the conservatives then get elected to fix up the mess again – and the cycle repeats. We never learn…
People are caught in a trap of their won making. They feel the only way to defeat party A is to vote for party B. This traps them in what will always be, essentially, a two party system. The solution is simple. Don’t vote for any part or party candidate. Have only independents to represent you. This way nuts who slip though the cracks are essentially powerless. This way works like a diode. Making easy for good decisions to pass and blocking bad ones.
I’ve recently converted to independent. Watching YouTube videos by John Stossel cinched it.
“Meanwhile, the rightwing Murdoch media machine continued to spew climate disinformation, cynically blaming the devastation on arson and “back-burning”.”
About a third of the burnt area was due to back-burning. Fire fighters in the Bilpin area, near Sydney, lit a back-burn which got out of control destroying many homes and an enormous land area (endangering the Wollamie pines site). It never joined up with other fires so may not have burned. The fire chief who ordered the back-burn lost her own home in the blaze.
There are a few still fighting the good fight against tyranny and the CAGW Alarmists like Topher Field and Senator Gerard Rennick and Daniel Wild from the Institute in Public Affairs and these fine folks who spoke on March 30.
Some day it may dawn on some here that the climate isn’t concerned with ‘left-right’ politics.
The climate isn’t concerned about man in any shape or form.
Unfortunately the left has decided that they want to use the climate change lie to force changes in society that they haven’t been able to get through honest means.
100% in agreement with your post MarkW.
Our Labour ,Greens ,coalition government use climate change to justify every stupid action they attempt.
Our prime nut Jacinda Ardern couldn’t take the heat so she has now left politics but watch out for her at some time in the future at the United Nations.
This government has made some stupid decisions based on the idea that our emissions are high when in fact they are very low per person fed.
New Zealand feeds over 30 million people in many countries around the world but the emissions are counted as New Zealands.
Why are these so called emissions not exported with the food .
Our meat and dairy products have the lowest carbon footprint in the world even after including the sea freight to Europe.
If our government were looking after New Zealands interests and welfare they would be broadcasting this story to the world.
Instead they are encouraging carbon farming which will never feed any one .
This is the most stupid policy any government any where in the world has ever come up with .
Talk about forest fires in Australia.
If these carbon forests go ahead in 25 years time these unpruned forests will become fire hazards as the trees fall over in storms .
What happens to the carbon credits then?
The owners mainly overseas interests wont be around to fight these fires ,so it will be rural fire crews risking their lives .
What benefit is there to New Zealand as all the carbon credits will flow overseas so some rich prick can fly around in their private jet as they have pockets full of CCs
I ask you all how can these carbon credits be used anywhere in the world but our food is also eaten everywhere in the world but the so called emissions are not exported with the food ?
Story Tip
Sorry, your team says Gaia is sentient and angry and hitting back.
Your fellow climate/insane.
That’s the climate involved in politics
Climate concern is a left wing issue in most countries. You have to wear your Trotsky glasses to see the climate catastrophe.
Of all people, the good readers of this site are well aware of how little the climate cares about the doings of man. But, it’s not about the climate. It’s never been about the climate. It’s always been about power and control.
The “Left” desire ever more power over every aspect of people’s lives. The “Right” aim to maximise personal freedom. However, this is achieved best by limiting the size of government and getting out of people’s way as much as possible. Subsequently, when they operate successfully they are criticised by the left for not doing enough.
Recently, the supposed conservatives in Australia have totally lost their way and are largely indistinguishable from the progressive. This is going to lead to a bad time had by all until some sanity is restored. People may have to feel the true consequences of their actions before they realise their folly though. Unfortunately, people who can see the errors in the current policy will not be immune from the consequences of their implementation.
The climate debacle is a great opportunity for the loony left. Fits their objectives perfectly. That’s why climate is political. If it down to science without politics there wouldn’t be a climate problem.
Had you read the article, what you should have said was:
“Some day it may dawn on Michael Mann that the climate isn’t concerned with ‘left-right’ politics.”
can you clarify what your point is?
If Mann left Oz 3 years ago the US Coast Guard should be looking for his rowboat to arrive shortly, as he is a strong believer that air travel causes the very conditions he is scuttling away from.
BTW, a news report this morning showed snow falling on our ski fields, reportedly not usually seen until early May
John, Every “shoulder season” is the same. Spring & Autumn will see folks on the beach swimming whilst 300km from them, some will be enjoying snowfall in the alpine areas.
“The governing Coalition had left a trail of death and destruction, both figuratively and literally. Thousands of homes were destroyed, dozens of lives lost, 24 million hectares burned” —
A disgusting, clueless, ignorant, pathetic, desperate comment by a committed member of the church of climate.
He really is an odious little piece of work.
We should not be ad hominem, but in Mann’a case I feel an understandable urge to shake him by the neck.
If a scientist sticks to the science and avoids being arrogant and political- I agree ad hominem should be avoided- but when they behave like Mann, they deserve some verbal abuse, even if it won’t accomplish much.
I have a few questions…
Mickey Mann is a nutter.
Mickey Mouse is more real than Mann.
If you are a hammer, then everything is a nail. I suppose if you are M E Mann then everything is a Hockey stick
I think the unfairness of Australians (and others——NZ, the US, Europe) sacrificing for the planet while China, India, Africa roll forward with coal fired plants year after year, making the sacrifices quixotic at best, will eventually cause massive stress. And the people will wake up and see the facts we skeptics see.
太遲了
Mann needs to make a trip to China and tell us how good they are doing over there. There must be a lot of climate change deniers in China whose minds he needs to change, because they are ramping up the coal burning to unprecedented levels.
Go to Beijing, and comment on the Chicom coal industry, Michael.
He isn’t Mann enough to do that.
The influence on voters by certain media & personalities is often overrated. Many vote the same way & follow dogma, many still vary their votes based on policies & local members. If media or social group are biased, people choose who/what they listen to according to what they already believe ie. the bias has very few people available to change. I think there’s enough smart thinking voters to give independent opinion to swing Australian elections.
Recently there was a conservation effort to save baby turtles (in eggs), not from global warming but needed incubation because the wild nesting locations were TOO COLD.
You are right. People are very entrenched in their voting habits. however I think the majority are available to change but not from one party to another. Rather, from any party to no party.
The victory in NSW will be short lived. The new Labor energy minister is already recognising the serious challenges. An alternative way of stating load management or rolling blackouts.

Thanks for reminding me, I can’t believe they’re still going forward with the closure. They only just scraped by last year.
Certainly needs close attention through May, June, July and August.
For those of us who can get by comfortably with interrupted grid power or even none at all, it will be fun watching.
Most business cannot operate when the power goes down these days so shopping can be disrupted as well.
The perfect storm of Labor governments in Australia coming face-to-face with reality. Hopefully it will foster Liberals to find a spine.
Meanwhile OverEasy has been invited to NATO talks – along with other Pacific rim leaders. Maybe a global perspective will open their eyes to what is happening as the old West races to energy poverty while the new economic powers forge ahead with energy expansion.
Remember this?

”The good news? After nearly a decade, Australia once again has a meaningful climate policy”
Hmm. Let’s see….. Assuming human co2 has caused 1C warming over the last hundred years. Aust. has contributed 1% of that. That’s 0.01C in one century. Reduce emissions by 50% overnight. That’s a 0.005 degrees cooler planet. (How much would I need to spend to buy a thermometer to measure that?)
That there is ”meaningful” climate policy apparently.
You know what a “meaningful” climate policy is? — No policy. The very notion of humans (in the form of politicians, left elite loonies and unelected bureaucrats) creating policies to attempt to influence the global climate is laughable.
If history teaches us anything, it’s that the pendulum doesn’t always swing back.
Societies a lot older than Australia have stumbled into oblivion.
That possibility exists. I hope you are wrong, I’m too old to fight my way to the front of the food line.
I hope I’m wrong too. But everything is starting to unravel. The family unit, schools, rule of law, basic beliefs in free speech and individual merit etc etc.
And this domino effect of self-destruction is being fueled by the internet which is super-charging our impulsive decision-making at the expense of slower thinking like logic.
I thought tech and the Internet would expand our higher functions but it turned out to be crack for our primitivism.
Look around. People lap up false narratives faster and faster. Started with climate but now it’s Russian collusion, Covid, systemic racism, transgenderism, and so many more.
These hyper-emotive brush fires are increasingly burning down the modern world.
Easy and fast access to information must be better for all. Sorting truth from fiction is the problem. One should remember that the truth never changes and always wins in the end.
The 1920s was also a period of license and excess, the shock of the great depression caused people to re-evaluate their values and life choices.
“I hope I’m wrong too. But everything is starting to unravel. The family unit, schools, rule of law, basic beliefs in free speech and individual merit etc etc.”
That sounds like the goals of the leftists/socialists/communists. Their goal is to destroy society as currently structured.
So far, they are being very successful, not only in Australia, but across all the Western Democracies, including the United States.
While the rest of us slept, the radical Left has been very busy and very focused on their goal to create a new world order. The damage they have been doing to society is now becoming apparent to many of those who were not paying attention.
