Excellencies, friends,
I thank the Austrian Government and Arnold Schwarzenegger for convening this important annual Summit.
It comes at a pivotal moment.
It is fifty years since the United Nations convened the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
But since then, few of our promises on the environment have been honoured.
The window to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis is closing fast.
Our planet has already warmed by as much as 1.2 degrees.
To keep the 1.5-degree goal within reach, we must reduce emissions by 45 per cent by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by mid-century.
But current national commitments will lead to an increase by almost 14 per cent this decade.
Last year, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions grew by 6 per cent when they should be falling.
Let me be blunt: most national climate pledges are simply not good enough.
This is not just my view.
Science and public opinion are giving timid climate policies a giant fail mark.
We are witnessing a historic and dangerous disconnect: science and citizens are demanding ambitious and transformative climate action.
Meanwhile many governments are dragging their feet.
This inaction has grave consequences.
Climate disruption is being felt right now, with nearly half of humanity in the danger zone.
And, at a time when we should all come together in the fight for our lives, senseless wars are tearing us apart.
The energy crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine has seen a perilous doubling down on fossil fuels by the major economies.
The war has reinforced an abject lesson: our energy mix is broken.
Had we invested massively in renewable energy in the past, we would not be so dramatically at the mercy of the instability of fossil fuel markets.
Households and businesses face crippling prices.
Our world faces climate chaos.
New funding for fossil fuel exploration and production infrastructure is delusional.
It will only further feed the scourge of war, pollution and climate catastrophe.
I repeat my call for G20 governments to dismantle coal infrastructure, with a full phase-out by 2030 for OECD countries and 2040 for all others.
And I call on all financial actors to abandon fossil fuel finance and invest in renewable energy.
The only true path to energy security, stable power prices, prosperity and a livable planet lies in abandoning polluting fossil fuels, especially coal, and accelerating the renewables-based energy transition.
Renewables are the peace plan of the 21st century.
Cheaper, more reliable and fairer energy options are already available in the shape of wind and solar.
This is true for all regions.
The cost of solar energy and batteries has plummeted 85 per cent over the past decadeThe cost of wind power fell by 55 per cent.
On the other hand, oil and gas have reached record price levels.
And investment in renewables creates three times more jobs than fossil fuels.
This is why I have proposed five concrete actions to jumpstart the renewable energy transition.
First, make renewable energy technology a global public good, including removing intellectual property barriers to technology transfer.
Second, improve global access to supply chains for renewable energy technologies components and raw materials.
Third, reform the bureaucracies and red tape that hold up gigawatts of renewables projects.
We need fast-track approvals for solar and wind projects and more effort to modernize electricity grids.
Fourth, the world must shift energy subsidies from fossil fuels to renewable energy, while addressing the potential consequences to the most vulnerable people.
And fifth, we need to triple investments in renewables.
This includes multilateral development banks and development finance institutions, as well as commercial banks. All must step up and dramatically boost investments in renewables.
And, as climate impacts worsen, we must also invest far more in adaptation and resilience building to protect lives and livelihoods.
This requires elevating adaptation action onto an equal footing with efforts to cut emissions, doubling adaptation finance from 2019 levels.
And it means ensuring that every person on Earth is protected by early warning systems within five years.
I count on this meeting to amplify these messages.
Let’s work together for an inclusive transition to a sustainable world.
Thank you.

Former Governor of California and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger arranged this event. I doubt US participants travelled to the event by rowing across the Atlantic.
Pretty much any technology – computers, advanced manufacturing techniques – can be deemed a vital component of “renewable energy technology”, so in my opinion this speech amounts to a demand that the USA permanently surrender all important technological intellectual property rights.

Just how convenient that every Secretary-General of the United Nazis (they do behave that way) has been a Communist, Socialist or a Nazi (Kurt Waldheim.) Remember, the UN is a PRIVATE body. Just because they have representatives from around the globe does NOT mean they truly represent the interests of Sovereign Nations.
It is time to grow up and recognize that the UN is a massive swindle. Along with the WEF and banksters, they want to take control of the entire planet. The Paris Accord extortion racket whereby the taxpayers of the planet fork out hundreds of billions a year to the UN to “combat” a “problem” they claim exists and for which progress or lack of progress(along with an excuse to extract even more money) is measured by them.
It is time to question the true agenda of the UN.
So he is on the Chinese payroll just like Brandon.
How can these over educated fools be so ignorant?
The perks of the job make it very attractive to be so.
They never held jobs where results mattered.
Well there certainly is something here that is delusional so he’s half right. I’m sorry to say this but you truly can’t fix stupid!
So say the most deluded of them all. Unfortunately they will be back.
The most troubling aspect of his speech is the disconnect between his early studies in electrical engineering and his position today. Fifty years on, he is a rampant socialist and does not hide his allegiances. It is sad to think, a man of influence would abandon his education and his obvious awareness of what is possible and what is impossible, preferring to be political over being scientific.. He prefers to advance political ideology rather than advance beneficial energy programs across the world.
From the article: “We are witnessing a historic and dangerous disconnect: science and citizens are demanding ambitious and transformative climate action.”
I agree. It is a dangerous disconnect for “science” and [some] citizens to be demanding ambitious and transformative climate action, when there is no evidence this is necessary.
From the article: “We are witnessing a historic and dangerous disconnect: science and citizens are demanding ambitious and transformative climate action.”
It’s quite true: people down here in Cornwall talk of little else.
(This is sarcasm for Simon and Nick Stokes).
This is such utter crap, really. The cost of wind power is infinite when the wind isnt blowing (cost of turbine divided by zero is infinity).
And thats the problem the UK has. Not the Ukraine war.
This clown, this fool, spouting utter crap, why the hell do we listen to him? Why do we even pay him a salary?
Someone at the UN should be advised that without coal, oil and gas their so called renewable energy will not exist. In fact nothing will exist except subsistence farming. They also need to be informed that CO2 is not now nor ever has been a climate driver.
The goal (“The Cause”) is not renewable energy. It is power and control. Totalitarian.
(Whether “Right” or “Left” doesn’t mater, as long as they are at the top and control “Freedom”.)
I fail to understand why the US shelters an organization this hostile to civilization within its borders.
In my humble opinion, The League of Nations failed because the US did not join after WW1 even though it was President Wilson’s idea. So, after WW2, they put the UN’s HQ in the US as a deterrent to the US withdrawing.
The US should withdraw, move the HQ to The Hague and then ignore it.
It’s never done anything to preserve the individual
freedoms we in the US under The Constitution and Bill of Rights enjoy.
One of The Founding Fathers (Washington?) warned us of foreign entanglements.
Delusional?! LMFAO.
Let’s put a mirror in front of this fool so he can see who is “delusional.”
Delusion #1: The ridiculous notion that wind and solar are anything but less efficient, more environmentally damaging ways to produce electricity from fossil fuels.
Delusion #2: The notion that wind and solar can produce equivalent electric energy (ONLY) to fossil fuels, which h conveniently ignores the herd of Wholly Mammoths in the room – intermittency, which means fossil fuels have to be kept ready to go to back up the worse-than-useless wind and solar anyway.
Delusion #3: The notion that we don’t STILL need fossil fuels for heating, transport, and as component parts of just about everything we can take for granted in first world countries, including FOOD.
Delusion #4: The notion that skyrocketing prices for fossil fuels are anything more than the RESULT of the STUPID policies idiots like him keep trying to shove down everyone’s throats.
Delusion #5: The notion that his admission that it takes three times the labor to source electricity from wind and solar is “good” news – and of course leaves out the additional “extra” labor that has to be kept on hand at fossil fuel and nuclear power stations to keep the lights on when the whims of the weather don’t cooperate.
Delusion #6: That the extra labor requirements alone (not to mention the REQUIRED duplicate power generation facilities) won’t DRIVE UP ENERGY PRICES unnecessarily and thereby damage the economy of every country STUPID enough to embrace “renewable energy.”
Delusion #7: That the imaginary “climate crisis” is real.
I could go on, but you get the idea…
It’s as though we’re living “Atlas Shrugged”. Issue Directive 10-289 immediately to save the planet!
Frighteningly prescient. Ayn Rand knew what she was talking about.
Speaking of delusional…..
Pope Francis says Ukraine war “perhaps somehow either provoked or not prevented” – CBS News
He is correct. Atmospheric CO2 concentration is not doing what he wants. That is because it is determined by Henry’s Law and has very little to do with mankind.

HONG KONG—The United Nations’ top human-rights advocate said she wouldn’t seek a second term, following a barrage of sharp criticism from Western officials and activists over her handling of alleged rights violations in China.
Addressing the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, Michelle Bachelet said the council’s current session, started this week, would be the last one she briefs as U.N. high commissioner for human rights, a role she will relinquish when her four-year stint ends at the end of August.
Ms. Bachelet, 70 years old, cited personal reasons for not seeking another term, telling reporters there was no link between her decision and the criticism she has faced. The former Chilean president said she had made her decision and informed U.N. Secretary General António Guterres of it before traveling to China in late May for a visit that Western officials and rights advocates have panned for allegedly playing into Beijing’s narratives about its rights record.
Preach to us from eastern Ukraine if you mean it.
Who elected the head of the UN to destroy pour peasant lives. He can talk of eliminating electricity because he will still have his; you can be sur eof that. He will still eat four course lunches and be flown around in jet planes from one island of luxury to the other.
Doesn’t Guterres just look like an old skool Soviet commissar? I can picture him in a uniform with rows of fake medals snoozing at a table in Stalin’s dacha, awakening momentarily to take another shot of vodka and saying ” Da! Da! ” to whatever pronouncement the great man (Stalin) has just made. ” We will bury the Americans! ” ” Da! ” ” Their tanks are no match for our tanks! ” ” Da! ” ” Mao is a fool! ” ” Da! ” ” The capitalists will never succeed in suppressing the glorious revolution of the worldwide proletariat! Mark my words! ” ” Da……” Sound of loud snoring…
All you need to understand about the UN is that North Korea is now in charge of the nuclear disarmament bureaucracy.
Equivalent of Putin investigating Russian actions in Ukraine for the UN.
