Guardian Climate Apocalypse: The End of the World is Now

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to the Guardian, the “surprisingly small” temperature increases we have experienced to date is causing “unprecedented pain and turmoil”.

The climate disaster is here

Earth is already becoming unlivable. Will governments act to stop this disaster from getting worse?

The enormous, unprecedented pain and turmoil caused by the climate crisis is often discussed alongside what can seem like surprisingly small temperature increases – 1.5C or 2C hotter than it was in the era just before the car replaced the horse and cart.

These temperature thresholds will again be the focus of upcoming UN climate talks at the COP26 summit in Scotland as countries variously dawdle or scramble to avert climate catastrophe. But the single digit numbers obscure huge ramifications at stake. “We have built a civilization based on a world that doesn’t exist anymore,” as Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University and chief scientist at the Nature Conservancy, puts it.

The world has already heated up by around 1.2C, on average, since the preindustrial era, pushing humanity beyond almost all historical boundaries. Cranking up the temperature of the entire globe this much within little more than a century is, in fact, extraordinary, with the oceans alone absorbing the heat equivalent of five Hiroshima atomic bombs dropping into the water every second.

Until now, human civilization has operated within a narrow, stable band of temperature. Through the burning of fossil fuels, we have now unmoored ourselves from our past, as if we have transplanted ourselves onto another planet. The last time it was hotter than now was at least125,000 years ago, while the atmosphere has more heat-trapping carbon dioxide in it than any time in the past two million years, perhaps more.

You might need to upgrade your browser before you look at the Guardian page, someone went to an impressive amount of effort to add all those interactive features. Though I’m not entirely sure how the picture of someone bathing an elephant fits into the mix.

As I sit on my chair, with a stomach full of home made roast chicken drumsticks, cauliflower cheese sauce, roast vegetables and spinach, I’m wondering when the climate apocalypse is going to make an appearance.

That chicken, I flavoured it with Salt, Sage, All Spice, Sumac and Garlic Powder. I don’t grow any of those herbs in my garden, someone prepared all the herbs in a factory, dried and ground them, and packaged them in neat little containers, so people like me can just try out them out, along with hundreds of other herbs in similar packages. The chicken came in neat plastic containers, ready to cook. I bought bulk chicken prepared by a machine, plucked, washed, neatly packaged. I didn’t grow the potatoes or cauliflower, or prepare the cheese, or grow the spinach, I just took ingredients from the local fruit and veg shop, combined them with ingredients from a discount supermarket which recently opened, threw it in the oven. The oven is powered by gas, so I didn’t have to gather firewood or prepare a fire. My kitchen workspace was illuminated by 200 watts equivalent of LED lighting, which costs pennies per day to run. Hot and cold water was available at the touch of a tap, along with other chemicals for cleaning, a bottle of cooking oil in a neat plastic container, and a tin of delicious chicken gravy powder I can’t believe I hadn’t tried – I bought it months ago, but I forgot about it, it just sat on a shelf waiting for me to notice it, and mix the perfect gravy to go with my home cooked chicken.

My wife had some mayonnaise with her meal. I’ve made home made mayonnaise, it takes 5 minutes with the aid of a food processor, just add a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice, a teaspoon of mustard powder, an egg, salt and pepper to taste, then slowly add a cup or so of canola oil one drop at a time while blitzing the mixture until it emulsifies and goes fluffy. The result is delicious, much better than store bought mayonnaise. I made some earlier this week to go with a delicious home made coleslaw salad. But tonight I was feeling lazy, so I squirted some store bought mayonnaise out of a plastic squeeze bottle I keep in the refrigerator on my wife’s plate.

There has never been an age like today, an age in which ordinary people could cook a nice meal, or order takeout if they can’t be bothered cooking, eat delicious food, watch TV, visit the Guardian website on their computer, and try to convince themselves they are experiencing some kind of disaster.

People who describe the unprecedented comfort and ease of modern life as a climate disaster, in my opinion have no idea what a real problem is.

I cannot understand why there is an element of society which is actively working towards a return to LIA conditions so hard. “Pre-industrial” climate would involve drought, low temperatures, famine and crop-failure… What is so attractive about this era of history?

Admad,
This is always what happens when you give psycho- and sociopaths a large number of “useful idiots” to play with! That’s why Marxism is such a dangerous religious cult; the criminally insane quickly rise to positions of power, and the torture and killings can begin!
Our supposedly free press was designed to be the antidote to this in the US, but instead they have joined with the crooks and the crazies to cancel the citizen!

By design, of the “Western Elite” ruling class who are the quintessential crooks and crazies… the super-rich created and run Marxism at the same time as buying out the press, it hasn’t been “free” since the 19th century. Modern “democratic” politics is just a Punch and Judy show to program the plebs into supporting their own slavery and destruction. Socialism is the new Inquisition, persecuting freedom for the Banking Cabal’s Slave State. Hence the new heresy, carbon positivity.

Daniel,
You DO realize that much of the environmental movement is primarily a Marxist proxy now, don’t you? It may be bright green on the outside; but it’s a bloody, Marxist red within!
You are going to have to decide which you support; much like the choice that the Pope is going to have to make between communism and Catholicism! There is a reason that the largest ecological disasters have occurred in Marxist states; lack of concern for the individual and worship of the State make admitting and correcting environmental mistakes nearly impossible!

pain and turmoil to the alarmists who pray for much greater increases

The world still hasn’t returned to the temperatures enjoyed during the medieval warm period,
much less the temperatures enjoyed during the Roman, Minoan or Egyptian warm periods. None of those warm periods came anywhere close to the warmth experienced during the Holocene Optimum.
Indeed, 80 to 90% of the last 15 to 20,000 years have see temperatures between one and five degrees warmer than today.

MarkW,
The Holocene Thermal Optimum is nothing compared to the Eocene Thermal Maximum! Only and idiot or an ignoramus would be worried about current temperatures, when Life was flourishing in climates ten degrees or more warmer 50 Mya!
Since then the Earth has been steadily COOLING, with Ice Age cycles that appear to be getting colder! At the same time CO2 levels have been dropping to the point that, only one or two periods of glaciation into the future, it will be so LOW that plants will begin to die off, causing ALL other life forms to die save some microbes and viruses!
The religion of Climastrology teaches just the opposite of the truth; not only is MORE CO2 necessary AND beneficial, but human agency will be required to SAVE life on Earth!

Well said … It was a period when mammals finally came into their own … the flourishing of warm blooded creatures (emphasis on warm).

The climate disaster narrative reminded me of Orson Welles famous show War of the Worlds. Both are dramatic fiction. The difference is Welles show did not intend to create panic while the dooms day climate article did.

As Katherine says we have built a civilization on a world that does not exist anymore. If by that she means temperature, can the human body detect the small change in temperature or if she means the benefits of the modern world than considering the hardship of the simpler times than the world left behind is better off now.

The simpler times were not simple at all and required hard work. I have yet to realize what is wrong with good weather and the benefits of the modern world.

Love the light touch at the end Eric. Puts it in perspective. Lefties are a most misérable people. Everything they see is bad and they are quick to point it out.It has got to be depressing at some point. Suicidal?

She obviously doesn’t know what she’s talking about! The real world doesn’t exist anywhere in her head; it’s filled with delusions instead!

Again the imbecilic underlying assumption of Edenic stasis – that climate never changed until humanity bit into the carbon apple. Deny it all they want – but this is the bedrock of the entire alarmist narrative. How else does the term “pre-industrial” have any meaning?

The Dansgaard-Oeschger events during glacial periods where temperatures rose then fell by 10 degrees or more over a few centuries were “pre-industrial” also. So no hiding behind the “but it never changed so fast” excuse.

In order to make a religion you need original sin. It’s no surprise this green lunacy was born and nurtured in the mostly Christian west. And so all these people who reject Christianity merely replaced it with this green alarmism, following the same broad brush strokes.
Because they need it I guess.
Eden destroyed by humans burning coal, all was perfect before.

It’s clearly been much warmer in recorded human history, sea levels alone tell us that much but the lengths the scientologists will go to try and disprove that is amazing, it’s like watching Joseph Smith creating his documents (there is a great South Park episode on that).

“have no idea what a real problem is.”

Seems to be a common tendency.

I watched a real climate disaster last night, a recorded episode of American Experience from PBS, on the great dust bowl of the 30s. Amazing footage and pictures and interviews with those that experienced it.
Like science fiction.

And refreshingly not a single comment about AGW, not even a suggestion this is what we’ll be facing every year.

I guess that is left to the episodes of Nova instead.

I recommend everyone watch it to see what a real climate disaster is
