Major 8.1 Earthquake Near New Zealand

There may be a Tsunami as a result of this big quake. A previous quake reading 7.4 caused a Tsunami warning, which has sine been lifted. This new one may change that situation.

From USGS:

M 8.1 – Kermadec Islands, New Zealand

Time 2021-03-04 11:28:30 (UTC-08:00)
Location 29.729°S 177.262°W

On the other side of the world Iceland has issued warning of possible ‘imminent eruption’ not of one but two volcanoes. They have a live web cam for continuous monitoring of one volcanic mountain

Fact of interest: “Fagradalsfjall is a 385-meter-high (1,263 ft) hyaloclastite mountain, formed in a sub-glacial eruption during the Ice Age. It was the site of a plane crash on May 3, 1943, in which a US military aircraft crashed, killing 14 people. One man survived the crash. Among the victims was General Frank Maxwell Andrews.”

General Frank Maxwell Andrews was a senior officer of the United States Army and one of the founders of the United States Army Air Forces, In1943, he took the place of General Dwight D. Eisenhower as commander of all U.S. troops in the European Theater of Operations. Andrews’ grave is at Arlington National Cemetery.

Joint Base Andrews, MD, is named for him. George Marshall was his daddy rabbit.

His fate is perhaps made more tragic for his dying, with 13 others, in an 8th Air Force B-24, or at least sadly ironic. Between the wars, he advocated for B-17 and other heavy, four-engined strategic bombers. He got the Billy Mitchell treatment, but was rescued by Marshall, when he replaced Malin Craig as Army Chief of Staff and Henry Stimson replaced Harry Woodring as Secretary of War.

Also one big one just started erupting in Indonesia, and it is expected to get worse, with a possible huge explosion.
Apparently a large lava dome is present.

A friend who lives in Iceland had emailed that they had small tremors all of last week. We got the email last Friday. I will post if I hear anything new.

The economic data confirms it, the economy has snapped back to the same levels as before and with only small rise in unemployment .
The population loves it as the election showed and for 80% of last year very little restrictions on gatherings or internal travel

There appear to be three strong earthquakes. One at 13:27, the next at 17:41, and the next at 19:28 (all UTC). Each is over magnitude 7. I don’t see any tsunami warnings until the last one.

By the way, you can go to usgs.gov and set up email alerts for earthquakes. I have mine set up for anything over 6.5.

There have been a number of strong quakes of late. Greece has also been hit by powerful quakes over the last several day, including the last one which struck one hour ago.
ps: a strong 6.5 just struck in NZ.

Nineteen of the largest earthquakes since 1900 have happened on the Ring of Fire.

https://www.usgs.gov/natural-hazards/earthquake-hazards/science/20-largest-earthquakes-world?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects

The 1906 Ecuador-Colombia earthquake happened the same year as the San Francisco quake and fire. There were four quakes of Magnitude 8.0 or higher.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_1906#By_magnitude

And another ~8.3 on January 4, 1907.

Looks like the Assam-Tibet Earthquake occurred on the same Ring-Of-Fire tectonic plate fault line as the Indonesia/Sumatra earthquakes.

That portion of the fault line follow the northern border of the India tectonic plate.

Or, are you referring to a different earthquake shown of USGS’s Top 20 map.

Never sleeps?

If we, in NZ, learnt anything from the Christchurch quakes it was that the number on the Richter scale by itself does not mean much. You have to know the death of the quake as well.
For example, shallow quake of say 5.0 on the scale can be much more serious and destructive than a deep quake of say 8 or 9 on the scale.

Also depends on what the surface geology is, ChCh Quaternary sediments, lots of shake, rattle and roll including liquefaction I gather. With the Newcastle quake in 1989 (5.6) the major damage occurred on recent sediments or reclaimed land, again liquefaction whereas buildings on solid Permian rock suffered minimum damage.
Actually the direction of the shock wave could be measured from the rotation on brick pillars, amazing to see

“It’s hard not to feel like our country is having a run of bad luck when you have an earthquake, tsunami alert and pandemic to contend with all in one day,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

Well, an earthquake may be bad luck, but the pandemic lockdown is all due to bad politics.

M 8.1 – Kermadec Islands, New Zealand

  • 2021-03-04 19:28:31 (UTC)29.740°S 177.267°W 19.4 km depth

If it was an 8.1 in the mantle that would be an extremely surprising quake, but at sub-crustal depths, in that location, it’s big, but not a surprise. I suppose the area gets shaken so often it does not get many large slides or debris-flows even from an 8.1, so no big sloppy water motions resulted.
