Here’s a thread for everyone to list all their complaints, and even the occasional compliment on the operation and appearance of the new theme.
We’ve seen comments coming in through through emails and the contact us forms, but here is a centralized repository for comment.
UPDATE – From Anthony
I have already done the following items to improve the look:
- Darkened the text in posts and comments from the original look to improve contrast
- Enabled our new commenting system that allows you to rate comments and to edit them after the fact (see the gear icon)
- Put back the blogroll
- Misc other small tweaks.
Note that I’ll look at every comment, but I have no patience for people that are running an ancient browser (like Internet Explorer 8) or and old version of Firefox….or some weird Linux/Centos/Chromium variant that isn’t compliant – we can’t help you there. Likewise, if you are still running on Windows XP, and complaining about load times, broken things etc. – please don’t.
Now is a good time for everybody to upgrade their systems to be in the present rather than the past.
I welcome comments on real issues, and ideas for improvement. With every change, there are some who don’t like change simply because of change. I can’t help you there, as we are moving forward to be more effective in what will become a very ugly climate fight this year.
Thanks and kind regards,
Anthony Watts
Anthony, The look is good. I was wondering where the blogroll was.
I noted that many of the links are dead or no longer maintained. ( like GreenHellBlog last entry is 2011 !) If you want, I can audit the list and send which are current, which are ancient, and which are dead.
Yes your war footing is necessary in light of all the attacks that will come under the new administration. I hope Heartland has a vigorous course of action planned….I will support as I am in suburban Chicago.
larger/bolder font on usernames is only issue I really see. the small/non-bold light greenish font tends to show up washed out.
Wrong thread.
This is more of a suggestion on content, not so much the look of the website.
What turned me away from alarmism was seeing, and verifying, lists of failed climate predictions. Seeing dozens of doomsdays scenarios from prestigious scientists and organizations that failed made me question whether our current predictions are any better. I would absolutely love to be able to post links to my family/friends that contains the failed climate predictions, along with the verifiable evidence of their failure.
Other than that, keep up the good work

Many thanks for the link – documentation.
I liked the old version but I like the new one better. Being able to rate comments is nice, and being able to edit is even better. As for the new look and feel, it’s just different and people will get used to it. My 2 cents worth.
thank you for returning the blog roll.
Dislikes: The red, prefer the original by far, and the news scroll.
Likes: WUWT, regardless
I like the changes to appearance and functionality, great improvement.
Would like to see the banner image improved, something more dramatic.
Something like this?
You left out both The USS Enterprise and the Tardis … and adding the StarGate would have been a nice touch.
(I know. Everybody’s a critic.8-)
I have a post I’ve been wanting to do for over a year that strongly involves SG Atlantis. Maybe I’ll get to it this week.
I really liked the no-nonsense style of the previous version, this seems like a plastic surgery update for flash. My read of this site before was on the scholarly serious side, now it’s sadly gone down to daytime talk show feel. Too busy with the scroller, garrish colors, breitbart quotes oof….
It was a surprise but overall I like the change. I especially like being able to subscribe to updates WITHOUT having to post something, that’s a big improvement IMO.
THANK YOU for making the text darker, too, that’s helped many of us, apparently.
I have two further suggestions for improvements:
1) Make the text in the input box darker, too (The one I’m using right now to type this – it’s pretty pale)
2) Can you include CONTEXT in the email updates? Especially with the new consolidated format – it’s difficult to understand a simple comment like “But that isn’t true” without knowing what it is responding to (made-up example but you get my meaning). The previous email updates included that context, and I found it VERY helpful for following the conversation.
One other:
I’m planning on changing my email soon. The old format had a way to subscribe to ALL new posts. I’m not seeing that option now, and I’ve seen others ask the same. Can we get that option back?
My only complaint so far is that the “reader view” on my iphone often doesn’t work. Other than this, I like the updated site.
is it possible for the thumbs up/down show the voters (upon hover like disqus) to the poster voted upon? would be nice if possible
Maybe.
I do like seeing a “thumbs up” to one of my comments.
But, since I’m usually late to the party, it’s nice to know somebody read it, like it or not.
“Now is a good time for everybody to upgrade their systems to be in the present rather than the past.”
I think I will start a Go Fund Me.
I understand. I still don’t have a cell phone. I don’t want one.
I’d still be using Windows XP if I wasn’t “forced” into using Windows 7 and then pushed into Windows 10. (Still resisting “Windows Edge”).
All the upgrades cost money. Some are worth it. Some aren’t.
PS I had a game that ran on whatever Windows was before XP. Someone made an XP patch for the game. But it wouldn’t run on Windows 7. 8-(
But Windows 10 has a feature called “DirectPlay”. Windows 10’s default is to turn it off but you can turn it on.
That old game runs now. A small plus to upgrading but still, for me, an unexpected plus.
Very nice layout, user friendly, can be searched with some sorting criteria.
I like the headline, “The world’s most viewed site on global warming and climate change”.
Your footer links to various social media platforms needs fixing as it just goes to the generic site not your specific page etc.
Was this built with Word Press?
I find the moving banner with headlines annoying and the duplication of what is immediately below a waste of vertical space. Also I like the expanded detail following regular titles to be useful. (I realize this comment is a nitpick only, WUWT is my favorite site. )
Purely an aesthetic gripe, and it may be just me – I’d prefer a cool tone motif (blues) instead of the hot tones (red). Red conveys anger (and warming), whereas blue does not. Again, it may well be just me.
Thanks, Anthony, for all of the work you do, and not forgetting Charles and the tireless moderators all ’round the planet.
I like the new look. It’s taken me a bit to get used to all of its quirks. I wish I could embed a picture without having to use the “source code” braces, but I finally figured that part out.
Finally, the ability for everyone to edit their comments, even for a limited time, is pure gold.
My best to you all,
w.
I’ve never been an extrovert and I avoid the garish bright colors, religiously.
But, it is NOT my blog. Your Blog, your rules, your color choices!
I do wish you could fix the “Like” function for articles. I haven’t been able to “Like” an article since midsummer.
Last summer, I managed to fix the WUWT “Like” function on my computer by first logging into the desktop WordPress editor/viewer. That trick hasn’t worked since September.
Some sites list the people who voted if one hovers the cursor over the vote buttons. It does help me check if I am overreacting to someone’s sarcasm or parody comments that fail to identify their comments with /S or /P.
I take people at their word. Failure to identify statements as sarcasm or parody is commenter hubris as I am not psychic and rely on the words I see.
I was anticipating your ‘mandatory login’ arrangement. I just don’t have the time to waste on comment threads that have been bombed by known serial thread bombers.
No matter how much other commenters claim they like them. That doesn’t justify serial trollops wasting my time.
Consequently, I spend far less time in WUWT than before. Finding threads bombed by malicious trollops usually ends my reading that thread.
Let me rephrase that.
Less reading of threads means much less participation in discussions. Especially since they are not discussions as the trollops make the same repetitiously specious claims with pasted sophistry cut from some propaganda site.
I doubt that I am alone in that respect.
Use of registered MAC addresses may help prevent trollops using multiple aliases. Lord knows that every time I access Apple or iTunes or iCloud they send me an urgent alert that a new machine accessed my account.
Yes, I do wonder why they do not save machine addresses for very long.
Cheers! May you have a wonderful and Happy New Year!!
Without the GND, of course!
Borrowed from the right hand side – “…flashy (apparently widely distributed)”– Michael E. Mann
The old format was not “flashy” at all – I would use the words solid, staid, substantial, professional.
The new format? Lets just say I’m not only old but old-fashioned.
That said, the new format may attract a little more attention from the younger set, actually get them to read something. If that happens I won’t complain.
But that’s what Mann said.
Even the old WUWT was more light than he could handle.
That is what Mann stated about that year’s release of Josh’s excellent calendar, not WUWT’s website.
I wasn’t aware of the origin of the Mann quote. Apparently that was made before I started taking an interest in the government’s efforts regarding “climate” and how it could affect my life style and wallet. Now I know. Thank you.
Anyone know how to get rid of those irritating ads that appear at the bottom of the screen now?
Suggestion: a subscription so that those who pay can go ad free.
don’t even ignore it…
A long time ago, the links to Previous and Next articles were at the head of each post. That made it easy to fast forward past posts which were of less interest. A previous change of style (or host?) forced the Previous and Next links to appear between the current post and the Comments. Not a big deal unless the less interesting post was also very long. If the new style permits the Previous and Next links to be moved back to the head of the current post, that would be my late request to Santa.
Otherwise, WUWT is among my must reads every day. Thanks for a wonderful site.
The home page is much better organized, making it easier to find specific posts both current ones and earlier ones. The appearance also is very good.
Is it possible to have a ‘progress’ bar at the top to indicate how far along in the article you are? I find this really helpful to know how long an article is and discern how much more reading will be needed to finish the article. Not having this means I have to scroll up and down a bunch of times to see how long an article is or how close I am to the end of it. There are some popular sites that use such a progress bar and I my impatience is always assuaged by seeing my progress. It helps me to actually commit to reading the entire article if I know what’s needed to finish it.
Thanks for all you work Anthony, this site has changed my life. For the better. Let’s hope that 2021 contains some positive developments.
I like the new look but have serious problems with the font size. I commented about that earlier but nobody picket it up. Am I the only one reading the block on an iPad? I easily get a backache and therefore avoid as much as possible to sit before a computer. The iPad is ideal for reading, but I can hardly read the new font without magnifying the view to the extent that the lines no longer fit the page.
