According to US climate change campaigner Katharine Hayhoe, Greta Thunberg’s attempts to shame people into climate action are counterproductive.

Shaming people into fighting climate change won’t work, says scientist

Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe says trying to inspire people is more effective

Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe says strategies that aim to shame aren’t effective.

Hayhoe recalls being told by a fellow climate activist that “every time you turn on your car, you’re sinning.

“My visceral reaction to somebody saying that to me was: ‘Oh, so when I take my child to the doctor, you’re saying I’m sinning? When I go to work to support my family, I’m sinning?'”

She told Galloway “that shaming made me want to just go out and find a Hummer and drive circles around that person.

I can understand Katharine Hayhoe lashing out – when is the last time Katharine was invited to speak to the European Union or French or British Parliaments?

But Katharine’s impatience with this new climate hero upstart in my opinion has led her to make a classic strategic error.

Update (EW): Katharine seems a bit unhappy at this post:

This is quite funny to watch and hear. The climate alarmists are vying for who should be poster child for their scamocracy.
Clearly it must be someone that has camera appeal and looks marketable, (that rules you out Michael M) it must be a female because in the world of woke, to be anything other than female is itself a sin, (sorry Al, being a self identifying woman, isn’t quite the same). The poster child, should also be someone young, innocent, vulnerable that kind of image, the usual ad man/woman’s go to look.
Please welcome on board the scam express, Greta from Sweden. If the Swedish entertainment industry have any sense, they will make her their next Eurovision candidate, singing “Where have all the icebergs gone, long time melting” or some such ditty. She would automatically win, then go on and be given a Nobel prize for Entertainment. Eat your heart out Barack those peace prize awards are old hat.

Wonderful, the CAGW theme song. Mind you, never heard of the Flying Lizards before.

Although we did have the Lizard of Oz as a Treasurer and then Prime Minister. But I don’t think he was particularly worried about CAGW. Just about getting money (as Treasurer).

I would simply add that the person must be someone with an affliction that can be used to demonize anyone who challenges her.

A green shark in cannibalistic mood wants a morsel of another younger of the same species. Ladies and gentlemen, let the show begin !

Obviously until child protection services finally pull the curtain for engaging a kid in a high-risk activity.

I’m not a statistician however my little finger says that those crossing oceans onboard air liners suffer much less pro-capita soul losses than the ones doing the same trip on racing boats.

Which is why, this whole adventure is highly immoral by all definitions.

The entire climate cult suffer from EHS (Extreme Hypocrisy Syndrome). This is all that allows them to stand up in public one day and say that everyone else must cut back and turn the economic clock back centuries, whilst they then go on fossil fuel burning foreign trips and buy goods and services produced by burning tonnes of fossil fuels.

They are literally the climate change deniers. They deny natural variation, then they deny the actual temperature of the globe as measured by satellites, then they deny that their own actions have any contribution to the amount of fossil fuels burnt. Everything they criticise sceptics for, THEY DO FAR FAR WORSE.

Hayhoe couldn’t be more wrong of course. The CAGW religion is all about using guilt. People are supposed to feel guilty about their “carbon footprint”. That makes them easier to manipulate. Yeah, she’s just jealous of the little upstart hogging the limelight.

Perhaps Katharine Hayhoe should try having plaited hair and she would be considered a climate expert.

The question no seems to be able to answer is how Greta is getting back yo Sweden !
Lets take a guess that will be via ‘evil fossil fuels ‘ and there will be zero press coverage of that .

Sorry folks. The quote is ‘infamy, infamy, they all have it in fa me’. And the shame thingy is lady Catherine in Pride and Prejudice. Saw them a long time ago and old age is catching up; I don’t recommend old age. The Carry On has one of the best two-worders ever: Marc Anthony exits Cleo’s room and says excitedly: ‘Oh puer, oh puer!’ Look it up.

And not to forget Carry On Columbus.

Chiquita is peering over the edge of Columbus’s ship in the middle of the night. Marco the Cereal Killer comes up behind her and warns her against thinking about going for a swim…

Marco: I wouldn’t if I were you, miss. I’ve heard that these waters are full of man-eating sharks.

Chiquita: Oh no! So if I fell in, do you think they’d swallow me hole?

Marco: No, I’m told they spit that bit out.

Last I heard poor Greta’s million dollar yacht is bacalmed in mid Atlantic.
Using 15th Century transport is great, is’nt it!
And girls did not attend school either in the 15th Century.
That calm is before the next Atlantic storms.
She might well be late for the star UN appearance!
Blame it on CO2.

Where did you get the information that Malizia 2 is becalmed? The last AIS position I can find was Aug 15, 2019 00:32 UTC, about 100 miles north east of Cape Finisterre. OTOH, I’m not going to spend 1188 euros to get satellite data. https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/MALIZIA2SOLOSAILOR-IMO-0-MMSI-211768710

Anyone know how Greta Thingummy is getting on in that racing yacht – which is like being offered a lift on a Formula 1 racing car..? The Sunday Times had an interesting piece about the deafening noise and endless crashing into waves she’ll be enduring while trying to – ha! – sleep…
Then there’s the bone-idle journalism that picks up that ‘the batteries are kept topped up by solar panels and a wind turbine..’ Quite correct – but exactly like every other ocean-going yacht on the planet….
Oh, yes – anyone mentioned how – even if she makes it – she’s going to get back to Europe..? Same method of transport – or smuggled onto a private jet, paid for by the UN..?

Hopefully she will come to realise the world is big and humans are little, no matter how big their ego’s are. She will certainly learn why aeroplanes became popular modes of transport for transatlantic crossings….

That’s not really fair of Hayhoe. Greta began by inspiring youngsters, however misguidedly, with a day off school until the adults piled in and started writing her speeches. Her tone has since begun to come across as scolding, governments, politicians and authorities but as a child she is not really equipped to engage openly with the debate so is there anywhere else for her to go now but simply echoing the talking points she is being fed?

If I was Katharine Hayhoe I would also be very worried. How can we continue to do Climate Summits, with lots of fanfarre and scare without fossil fuels? If the Greta’s fashion glues, at least the CAGW summit attendees will have to convince some rich guy with a Iate to take them and be, at least, a few weeks without scare anyone (unless they have a internet system connected to the iridium network, taking some fossil fuel consumption to work).

Paul R Johnson

Note the use of “sinning” to describe use of fossil fuel. Thus Climatology has made the transition from a science driven by objective Facts to a religious cult governed by subjective and ever-shifting moral Truth.
Of course, some now favor Truth over Facts.

David Weber and Eric Flint “Empire of Man” series posited an empire based on this shaming taken to the power of the nation state — “The Caravazan Empire” — that world conquer worlds and work there populations to death remove the contamination of man until the world was “restored” and the population was what could be carried without environmental impacts — i.e. human in hovels. The Imperial leadership governing those worlds lived in palaces, of course. They had the heavy burden of protecting Nature of course, and couldn’t allow the inconveniences of primitive life to interfere with that high duty and eternal vigilance.

Sometimes I think that’s how these folks see the perfect end state….

Ms. Hayhoe, if your climate science was solid enough to persuade the average honest scientist or engineer you wouldn’t have to “sell” the public on it. We would all be on board. None of us wants to destroy the earth. But neither do we want to be slaves to evil lying unaccountable power grabbing Authoritarian Totalitarian Tyrants.

But…all we see from climate Alarmists is very inscientific name calling and slander and lies and propaganda. There is no attempt to answer pointed questions, like why no Alarmist predictions are coming true, or why do Alarmists say that extreme weather is getting worse when it isn’t.

Why should we implement your $100 Trillion CO2 Emissions Plans…WHEN USING YOUR OWN INFLATED NUMBERS THE EMISSIONS REDUCTIONS WOULD HARDLY BE MEASURABLE IN 2100?

Everything you Alarmists say and do makes no sense to anyone who is paying attention to everything you say and do.

I personally think that Hayhoe’s shameless admissions that she feels “0%” guilt after booking “some long haul flights for my family to enjoy some winter sun on the beach this Christmas” can come back to bite her.

The whole point of the situation is that under current framework Hayhoe should feel very guilty about going on Christmas vacation to some far-off place. In fact, she should feel a lot more guilty than a person who uses a less fuel efficient car, or lives in a bigger home, or eats beef, for crying out loud, but doesn’t do such vacations: the level of carbon emissions for such flights is not negligible, and is typically comparable to driving a similar distance in a car – per person. With a family of four, obviously, you need to multiply the amount.

Hayhoe obviously shows that when it comes to the Green Gentry, it’s their spending they feel 0% guilt about, and it’s everyone else’s that should be curbed. Which is why the whole situation stinks.

I have just bought a hybrid car. Level of guilt 50%. Why? It was a triumph of economy over a belief I should maximise my consumption to emphasise that until climate science has gone to court to prove its case it has no
justification for any coercive action using legal or moral pressure to mitigate the claimed damage from so called man made climate change that to my mind the evidence they produce proves conclusively it is natural.
If I could have afforded it and parking was easier round here I would have bought a limo I feel so strongly against her and her kind of crooked Orwellian big sisters.
