The Oxford Student has learnt that Dr Young-hae Chi, Professor at Oxford’s Oriental Institute, believes in a strong correlation between climate change and alien abductions.
In 2012, Dr Chi gave a lecture at the the Ammach Conference, titled ‘Alien Abduction and the Environmental Crisis’ in which he outlined his theory concerning the presence of aliens on earth.
Dr Chi began his lecture with the statement that “perhaps human civilisation is coming to an end”.
In his fifty-five minute presentation he cited Dr David Jacobs, an ‘abduction researcher’ in the US, who argued that aliens’ primary purpose is to colonise the earth, by interbreeding with humans to produce a new hybrid species. Second generation ‘hybrids’ are, according to Jacobs, walking unobserved among us.
Dr Chi argued that “it is not only scientists and theologians, but also non-human species who appear to be greatly concerned about the survivability of the human species”.
He pointed out that the timing of aliens’ appearance coincides with the earth facing major problems, climate change and nuclear weapons in particular.
He concludes that “it may be more or less assumed that the hybrid project is a response to this impending demise of human civilisation”.

You might think in the absence of extraordinary evidence, Dr. Chi’s ideas are utterly preposterous, but evidence free assertions are not unusual in the climate science community.
Some climate scientists demand we accept their model projections without getting hung up about the simplistic version of scientific falsifiability we learned as children; they claim their climate expertise is all the evidence we need to accept their predictions.

I recall attending a lecture at Sydney Uni as an undergraduate where the existence of Aliens was ‘demonstrated’

If one looks carefully one may see the flying saucer in the clouds at the top left of the painting.
Other pieces of evidence, such a s a rocket head dress were shown. This showed that alien technology was in use in Biblical Times.
The audience lapped it up.
The fact that Raphael did not make it to the resurrection did not seem to matter.
To this day I am not sure if this lecturer was or was not pulling the legs of the gullible.

Has anybody considered the genetics of such a hybrid? Humans have 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs. How likely are aliens from who knows where, less related to us than an amoeba, to have 46 chromosomes, and be compatible with us? A tomato is more related to humans than some alien is, has 46 chromosomes as well, but no one in his right mind would consider the possibilities of breeding a half-human, half tomato crossbreed.
That was always my problem with Star Trek, too, but at least that was fantasy. On the other hand, so is this silly idea.

I”ve reviewed the twins study from NASA on the Kelly brother’s. The one who stayed a year on the ISS and the other who stayed here on Earth.
What it says, between the lines, is no one is going to survive for > 2+ years in beyond LEO-space (above the Van Allen radiation belts).
No one.
And if they somehow do survive, they are gong to be so sick and radiation poisoned, that their remaining days will be miserable bouts with hematologic cancers (leukemia/lymphomas), stark anemia due to hematopoetic stem cell failures, and insidious cognitive dementia (unable to complete basic mental tasks or memory functions). And also likely cardiac instabilites due to loss of cardiac stem cells due to radiation exposure. Really bad stuff.
Manned trips to Mars, without a crap-load of very thick, heavy radiation shielding on the crew cab (much more than is currently planned), simply is not going to happen without a death sentence being imposed on the astronauts.
I would be astonished if we were never able to generate our own radiation shield similar to the van Allen belt.
I would also be astonished if we were to never create an artificial oxygenation and nutrition system for astronauts.
Of course I’d also be astonished to live long enough to see these things happen, but less so.

Oh we knew about the Van Allen radiation belts. Apollo missions used speed and trajectory to mitigate and avoid to the extent possible.
GCRs and solar CME’s are the very deadly threat beyond Earth’s magneto-sheath. Scott Kelly’s exposure for a year was in LEO. An extended staybeyond LEO in space will be quite deadly.
Nasa could test this with a spaceship carrying rats in lunar orbit for a year long mission. But they won’t because the lethal answer would put all their manned space flight funding (jobs) in jeopardy.
NASA manned space programs today are as much a jobs program as the Depression era CCC was in 1938.
The solutions to humans living safely in space are:
Centrifugal force
One-meter-thick Water-ice radiation shielding.
The solution to conquering the Earth/MoonMars space:
Aldrin Cycling space transportation vehicles, that travel in orbits between Earth and Mars, and a Moon-orbiting and Mars-orbiting space station incorporating the artificial gravity and radiation sheilding items mentioned above.
Take a one-mile-long cable and attach a habitat module to each end, then stretch the cable taunt and rotate the modules around the center at one revolution per minute (RPM) and this will produce artificial gravity in both modules that is equivalent to the gravity on the surface of the Earth.
Cover these modules in a one-meter-thick envelope of water ice and this will protect humans inside from the radiation of space.
This basic configuration could serve as Aldrin Cycling Transports, and as safe harbors around both the Moon and Mars.
The formula is: One Mile in Diameter + One Revolution Per Minute = One Earth “Gravity” 1+1=1
The additional mass of the water ice will add to our fuel bills, but there is no other choice.
If I were a billionaire, I would be looking for a nice small asteriod I could hollow out as my new kingdom. Something about ten miles long and about five miles in diameter. That ought to be big enough. 🙂
You should do some engineering numbers around those ideas.
1 cubic meter of water shield = 1 metric tonne.
surface area of a sphere = 4πr^2.
Assume a sparse, shielded spherical crew living space just 4 meters in diameter.
Outer hull Area = 16π sq meters = ~50 sq meters.
So 50 tonnes of water just for shielding. That 50 tonnes shielding cannot be used for anything else, like to make oxygen, used for fuel.
To go to Mars, that 50 tonne-watershield would have to be accelerated to leave Earth orbit and put on a Mars intercept. And then decelerated at Mars just like the rest of the spaceship, the astronauts, and their food, fuel, and, water. Transit is roughly 200 days each way. Unless it was one-way suicide mission, the astronauts will also need that water to return safely to Earth on the 200 day return. So the water shield would have to accelerated again to break Mars orbit and put the ship on a return to Earth trajectory. The only good part is the water shield could be jettisoned just prior to Earth arrival and deceleration for re-entry so that fuel wouldn’t be needed for that.
The fuel expenditures for the thrust needed alone for the watershield mass are enormous. If the rest of the ship were 50 tonnes also, that means half the fuel would be shielding alone.
So a 100 metric tonne ship to Mars and back.
Better just to use robots and AI to explore beyond LEO as we already do. Humans need to stay here in our space place on Earth.
Radiation is lethal. Unless the idea of dying at a young age from leukemia or lymphoma or early-onset dementia and blindness appeals to you.

I’m not sure American English spoke by Kirk and Co counts as the “Queen’s English”. But putting that aside, a number of sci-fi shows (including Star Trek) do occasionally come up with explanations for that. With Star Trek, it’s their universal translator that make you hear the aliens speaking English. There’s been a few episode where the translator isn’t working (such as a DS9 episode where Quark is in the past, at Roswell New Mexico) And Doctor Who has the TARDIS’s telepathic circuits doing the translation for the TARDIS crew.
Babylon 5 had an episode where a new species showed up and for the first minute or so the speakers put out gibberish that slowly began to make sense as the “universal translator” learned the new language.
Don’t forget Galaxy Quest.
Doctor Who had a episode where something similar happened (The Christmas Invasion) in which an alien race called the Sycorax was first heard speaking alien gibberish that transforms into English as the TARDIS translation kicks in when the Doctor emerges from his post-regeneration coma.
There was also an episode on The Next Generation where they were dealing with a culture that spoke almost entirely through metaphore, and since the Federation dudes didn’t know the references, they couldn’t understand what the aliens were trying to say. The words were understandable, but there was no communication.

All life on Earth uses the same genetic code for AGTC DNA coding to AGUC RNA to the 20 essential amino acids in the translation CODONS with identical degeneracy of 4^3 (64 coding sequences for 20 AA). There are some noted exceptions in our biology where this coding from Replication to Transcription to Translation does not follow the exact same coding, but those are rare and distant extant examples outside the main tree of life on Earth. Even the Left hand twist of the DNA helix ais governed by the one-chriality of the L-amino-acids and nucleic acids on Earth.
There is no reason this Left:Right chirality choice of the carbon atom in the nucleic acid and the amino acid is unique in an extra-terrestrial life forms, it could be the opposite. A 50:50 choice for biology of any planet uniquely evolving its own nucleic acid and amino acid based life.
If it is not EXACTLY the same, then there is no way an alien with an different AA-codon or with an R-chirality amino acids and nucleic acid DNA/RNA could reproduce with an Earth species even if all their codons (base-pairs to assigned AA by tRNA mapping) were the same as here on Earth.

And generally, for fertilization and development to take place, the two parents must be within +/- 2 chromosomes. Even then, if the offspring is viable, it is usually infertile. Birthing is typically fatal for the mother if if the male species is much larger. The odds are not in favor of the invisible aliens, especially if the alien is female! Alien female: “No, not there!” Human male: “Well, where then?”

Actually, I made no such assumption. I was merely stating an observation about problems encountered with inter-species hybrids. It is the female that is at risk if there is a substantial size difference.
As to “odds,” unless the aliens evolved on a planet with gravity close to that of Earth, they will probably be different in size. So, 50% of aliens might be smaller and 50% might be larger. On Earth, it is common for male mammals to be larger than females. No assumptions, just observations.
That was always my problem with Star Trek, too, but at least that was fantasy.
Star Trek got around that “issue” with the idea that aliens races in the universe were “seeded” with genetic material by an ancient super-civilization called the Preservers. (See The Next Generation Episode “The Chase”)

When the astronauts returned from the first moon landing it was found that they had been infected with an odd syndrome which could not be explained.

This eventually was given the name of CAGW (Catastrophic Anthropological Global Warming) which rapidly developed into a pandemic and has now reached hysterical proportions.
For those unaware, Memes act in the logical environment in similar ways to genes and have the propensity to replicate and additionally morph into variations and sub-memes. This is what makes them so dangerous.
If you strip the terms “Alien” and remove the sexual connotations from Dr. Young-Hae Chi’s presentation then the his story reveals a similarity here.
Take this as you may; but what is evident is the seriousness of the matter.

Nutter aside. It’s a long running theme in sci fi that aliens will punish us for not looking after the planet but logic makes it highly unlikely. If there is enough intelligent life in the universe that one day they turn up here, then it follows that there must be countless planets with no intelligent life and even more with just plant life. So our planet and its animals wouldn’t be remotely interesting. Only humans would be novel. If they wanted to save the planet then delivering cheap, non polluting energy would be the easiest solution. Almost certainly any intergalactic life form would have gone through a similar series of industrial revolutions. The very drive to travel space is no different than our own spread across the planet.
The alternative is that habitable planets are scarce in which case, the aliens could just wipe us out. The parental alien concept, where they are prepared to slightly intefere but not enough to solve the problems is derived from religion and is implausible. Either intefere or don’t interfere but a little bit of ineffective tinkering is to quote Spock ‘illogical’.
That assumes the “parental aliens” are logical beings. It’s quite possible the alien race had their own far-left SJW insanity in their history. Perhaps they never fully recovered and thus any planet that doesn’t meet their exactly standards are full of Nazi’s that need to be punished for their “crimes”
