Pope Francis seems upset that nations have not heeded his climate advice. But I am concerned the Pope’s increasingly pessimistic climate message may be doing greater harm to society than his holiness realises.
Pope warns climate change turning Earth into desert, garbage
…
Francis made the appeal at a Vatican conference marking the third anniversary of his landmark environmental encyclical “Praise Be.” The document, meant to spur action at the 2015 Paris climate conference, called for a paradigm shift in humanity’s relationship with Mother Nature.
In his remarks, Francis urged governments to honor their Paris commitments and said institutions like the IMF and World Bank had important roles to play in encouraging reforms promoting sustainable development.
“There is a real danger that we will leave future generations only rubble, deserts and refuse,” he warned.

There is zero risk any imaginable release of anthropogenic CO2 will ruin the world. My evidence is the past geological ages of the Earth, like the age of the dinosaurs, the Cretaceous – 4C warmer than today, 1700ppm CO2. During the Cretaceous the Earth was bursting with an abundance of life.
But the Pope’s ridiculous statements on a subject he obviously doesn’t understand still have the potential to do great harm.
Consider the following:
… The tall, sharply dressed man said humans were a cancer on the Earth. He said that he resented his parents for raising him to be “super hedonistic, just monstrously gaining things.” He said he had grown nihilistic, that he wanted to take up chain smoking and die a slow death. When Schapira asked if he was angry at his family, the young man replied, “I love my family. It’s so hard to know that you only have five years left to love people.” …

People who think they are about to die don’t plan for the future. They don’t believe they have a future. Problems remain unsolved. Health issues which young people are particularly at risk from, such as sexual health or drug abuse, avoiding HIV and other deadly STDs, becomes a bad joke. Why worry about something which could kill you in ten years, when climate change will kill you in five?
Pope Francis to his credit has championed sexual health, including use of condoms. But telling people the world is about to end is in my opinion a bit of a mixed message.
The USA, like many countries, is currently facing a serious opioid abuse epidemic. I’m not saying that this is Pope Francis’ fault, overprescription of painkillers leading to vicious cycles of addiction seems a far more likely culprit.
But people who defeat opioid addiction or overcome their temptation towards other harmful patterns of behaviour have to believe in the possibility of a better future, otherwise why bother? One of the world’s leading religious figures going around telling everyone the future is “rubble, deserts and refuse” does not help people feel more positive about their future.
The Pope has the potential to do great good, his views are important to a large number of people. But a scientifically unsound message of climate pessimism is not a realisation of that potential for good.
Let us hope that the Pope broadens the range of advice he receives about climate science.
To understand the pope’s position just follow the money. The Catholic church has been under assault from the many scandals world wide with slowly declining revenue. The church was faced with selling part of their vast real estate to cover operating expenses. The powers that be (Club of Rome, One world order or whatever you want to call it) Used climate change to justify creating a huge pool of refugees instead of illegal aliens. The idea being to destabilize western societies and soften them up for socialism.
The only organization in the world with a presence everywhere and the logistics to move and establish refugees is the Catholic Church. A match made in heaven. A socialist pope with dwindling revenues offered billions to funnel refugees through Catholic Services.
Billions were funneled to Catholic Services through the Obama administration. You could hire refugees much cheaper than citizen labor because Catholic Services is acting as the de facto safety net including subsidizing wages where the government is bared even though the government has been paying the tab.
That is all threatened under Trump and climate change denial. The pope is no dummy. He has a background in chemisty. I’m sure he feels he chose the lesser of two evils as a path to relevancy in the future.
The Potato’s background in chemistry is that of a high school grad.
You’re right about the money, but with Frank, it’s also the ideology. He’s a hard core “liberation theologist”, ie a Marxist pretending to be a Christian.
I must have missed that part of Revelations…
Rubble, deserts and refuse are exactly what prior civilisations left for us. Archaeologists are really happy with these….
With all due respect for the Pope. I would like to say to him: Please stay away from any form of science, you have done enough damage in the past, learn from your mistakes
The Potato isn’t interested in the science. Only the dough and the power that flows from the scam.
…Pope Francis: “we will leave future generations only rubble, deserts and refuse”…
We are already doing that in Art, Philosophy, Theology, Science, Engineering and History. What would be so unusual about doing it in Architecture as well?
What we are seeing is a mania spread over the world – by what we are seeing is NOT the Pope believing in Climate Change. It is worse than that.
People seem to attribute ideas and speeches to the people that give them. This is rarely true in the Western World any more. Leaders are no longer leaders – they are a convenient figurehead for a multitude of often competing advisers and pressure groups who work behind the scenes. It is these rarely uncovered groups which drive the manifestos of the world, releasing rumours and press statements, drafting speeches and giving unattributable interviews to tame journalists. Ideas are floated to see if the public are willing to believe them – and then put into effect if there is no major blow-back. The current ‘War on Plastic’ is just such an idea.
In this case the Pope has simply been given a speech to deliver. It was drafted by a group of advisers, and will have included bits to provide support for several different factions inside the Vatican. if it missed one out, that would be a signal that that faction was on the way out or being absorbed by another power group. I am sure that he did not personally agree with some aspects of the speech – maybe most aspects. But he would have been told that the speech had been agreed by the major figures in his retinue, and that no part could be altered without going through the agreement negotiations again.
I wish more people would recognise the essentially bureaucratic nature of modern government. So many people think that Merkel or Macron or May are in charge – they are not. They are puppets on the stage who are there to take the flak.
Now hold it right there – Merkron is not to be compared to the Pope – nowhere do scriptures say the Pope is a committee (or schizophrenic). Noting a camel is a horse designed by a committee, it is not do difficult to see why. Merkron, or Macrel, is making a right mess of things.
Take Reagan’s example – he was handed a Kissinger speech for Reykjavik 1983, and promptly delivered his own – the SDI proposal. Sir Henry chewed the rug, so let Cardinal Turkson chew some Vatican carpet.
Trump has a certain way with speeches – London is beside itself – let them chew Buckingham carpet.
The Pope should stick with something he is knowledgeable about .
He must be getting coaching lessons from Madonna and big Al .
Rubble , deserts , refuse . Whew Heavy ! Sounds a lot like San Francisco and LA .
Humans are far more capable of destruction than that from adding plant food to the atmosphere .
The goal of the save the planet charlatans is actually global governance and massive population elimination . Does the Pope really want to hook up to that train ?
Abundant availability, use and affordability of fossil fuels does far more good than bad .
Of all people the Pope should know humans don’t run the climate . Natural variables do as they have
since his boss introduced the sun ,oceans and land masses .
Definitely, unless we scrap renewable energy!
“Let us hope that the Pope broadens the range of advice he receives about climate science.”
Better start talking to his boss, then.

Dr. Kunihiko Takeda who has a PhD in engineering with a Major in Resource Material Engineering
has twice come out on national Japanese television to declare global warming a hoax.
On July 4th, Chubu University scientist Professor Kunihiko Takeda told a national audience on popular Japanese TV program ‘HONMADEKKA! TV’ that cold will be reported on rather than global warming in the second half of 2018.
“The story that the ice of Antarctica and Arctic is melting is a lie, he stated further.”
“Global warming is a hoax”
The 1st time was last year and the 2nd time was 5 days ago. The rest of the world’s MSM media wont even give an interview to any skeptic. So the alarmists are going to say that either he is a fraud or incompetent. A man of his stature would never risk his reputation if he wasn’t 100% sure about this. So that leaves the alarmists to scrutinize his qualifications.
His current other positions include:
Nagoya City Management Advisor, Toyama City Policy Adviser, Nagoya University High School Students’ College, Shibaura Institute of Technology honorary supporter, Asahi Kasei Sumitomo, Society of Polymer Science Fellow, Rod Board Director (outside the company), Daikoku Denki Co.
His previous positions include:
Cabinet Office nuclear power committee special committee, Cabinet office nuclear safety committee special committee, expert adviser of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Council, MEXT.
Part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Yokohama National University, Waseda University, Rikkyo University, Aichi University, specialists in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Education Council, Engineering Academy Director, Shibaura Institute of Technology Councilor, Representative Director of the University Reform Division, Chairperson of the Chairperson, NEDO Technical Committee, Executive Director of the Japan Engineering Education Association, JABEE Engineering General Review Committee Chairperson, Nonprofit Corporation “Fun Science Girls’ Laboratory” and “Techno Mirai Juku” Executive Director.
After looking at that list, a couple of things stand out.
1) Cabinet Office nuclear power committee special committee. If you think that the Japanese government would let any Tom Dick and Harry on a nuclear power committee, then you are trying to erase the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
2) A professor who has been a part time lecturer at that many whos who of Japanese universities is a man greatly respected and that shows up by the media twice interviewing him on national television.
THIS MAN HAS TO BE LISTENED TO.
This is one of the 1st cracks in the sandcastle of global warming. As each other crack comes faster and faster , just like in a real sand castle on the beach , the tide turns quickly and drowns the liars along with the sandcastle.
Of course, the Catholic Church wouldn’t involve itself in oil and gas extraction on its land, would it. Would it?

and the trashed palaces in sth america thanks to the conquistadores and their holy mission, in part, at least…
whats the wallydog on about?
same old same old
lol woof!
While noting the daft direction the Vatican is taking some here who bash religion are in fact believers themselves in a wildly irrational , essentially satanic ideology, none other than von Hayek’s.
Now von Hayek himself openly praised the founder of his widespread ideology as none other than Bernard Mandeville, who’s works include the Fable of the Bees, and the British Isle’s Hell Fire Clubs which plagued the place.
This totally nutty “economics” paraded by various institutes, especially the London School of Economics LSE, has killed more than all religions combined, and drives regime change of any that buck this evil, including right now Washington D.C.
von Hayek, Milton Friedman of the Mont Pelerin Society, all peas in a pod, with smiles, not moustaches. Just imagine spontaneous economics sprouting in an unknowable way from the friction of trade ! Pure alchemy – essences from stone, the obsession of Isaac Newton. Not only is this anti science, but anti human – hence the satanic attribution.
Curious to see what the Vatican makes of this….
Blasphemy! The Pope is infallible. So sayeth St. Joan Osborne
The Pope, lecturing on science. The irony!
There is a general failure to think strategically here. Francis is competing with Bartholomew for greeniness – to end the oldest Schism of 1054, to take on Confucian China. Thoroughly nutty, but seen from within the Basilica? Someone, likely Blair or Prince Philip, has profiled them, under duress of scandal. When Gore said he would convert the fix was in.
He left out condoms.
Papal Fail:
You would have hoped that, if The Pope is all he’s cracked up to be, his immediate superior might have had a word in his ear.
Even just a low ranking Archangel to suggest that in the case of deserts, it is actually the lack of plant life that causes the poor climate – not vice versa.
There are no plants within deserts because there is no nutrition for them there.
If no living plants > no dead & decomposing plants > no water retention > no thermal inertia > crazy & wildly-variable weather
In every extant desert there is evidence that plants did used to grow there, especially including Planet Mars. Explore. Look. Think. Learn.
That evidence is the dust.
Where did all the very and ultra-fine dust come from – if not the acidic by-products of decomposing plant-material attacking the mineral particles of the soil?
You can even buy the stuff from garden centres – go looking for Humic Acid.
(Is that where our Pope has gone wrong – does he ever do his own shopping?)
And doesn’t Ma Nature like to help – using lightning to oxidise nitrogen thus creating Nitric Acid. Don’t get any more business-like than that when it comes to dissolving (basic) stuff
There is method to the apparent madness, but if you get Cause & Effect the wrong way round it truly does become madness.

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion – Stephen Weinberg
So easy to make such claims. If 100 years from now turns out that he was wrong, nobody cares, especially him because he would be dead…
How about making a law, that if you want to make such predictions you have to bet your own money. And it also has to happen in your lifetime (10, 20 years from now, depending on how old and healthy you are). That way you would actually have something to lose if you turn out to be wrong.
Because anyone can claim anything. Talk is cheap. We shouldn’t take these claims seriously.
Franciscans wear a chord with 3 knots in it for poverty, obedience and chastity.
Pope Francis: Let others substitute birth control and abortion for chastity. Don’t tell ’em about the poverty and the obeisance to government. Make it involuntary and nothing to do with spirituality.
Other than that, he’s an honest and virtuously spiritual man.
The Pope is an ignorant man in all the facilitating sciences that make modern civilisation work, whose murderous and abusive Faith persecuted those who made modern life possible, throughout the inquisition until late 1800s. His interest is the Vatican’s self interest -to keep the masses dumb and fearful with this science denying fiction that anyone who attains numeracy can check and find to be a massive deceit on the hard facts of what we know about temperature, CO2 levels and sea levels, both before and after serious industrialisation.
Religion and the authority it brings through ignorant fear promoted by his kind can only thrive by maintaining the ignorance and poverty that enable it, of which a lack of cheap plentiful energy is the primary cause. So the last thing Francis wants is for the 3rd World to get capable intense energy sources, he wants them dumb and controllable, hence the support for woefully inadeqaute renewables, AKA the wind mills and water mills and “bio fuel” wood burning he promotes. Religion is dogma, invariably regressively controlling in intent, for the profit of its priests, and demanding of irrational belief in its bogus self serving utternaces.. Like government, only worse.
“Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.”
Maybe someone should remind his holiness that the last Pope who got into politics lost half his flock to Martin Luther… who took them to Minnesota via Sweden!
While we in the US are worried about a left-wing coup designed to install a permanent socialist ruling class, the Catholic Church actually suffered one.
Pope Moonbeam. He’ll be my next candidate for the Jackson Award. He qualifies for this year, but I already submitted my candidate. I feel an obligation to be loyal to him (I think it was Moonbeam). After all, he’s the reason I left Kalifornia. the Pope hasn’t inspired me to do anything except be more suspicious of religious leaders. And tighten my grip on my wallet when they’re near.
