John Kerry: Air Conditioners as Big a Threat as ISIS

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

US Secretary of State John Kerry has set his sights on the nation’s air conditioners, claiming that the climate impact of air conditioners are as big a threat to life as the Islamic State terrorist group.

Kerry: Air conditioners as big a threat as ISIS

“As we were working together on the challenge of [ISIS] and terrorism,” Kerry said. “It’s hard for some people to grasp it, but what we–you–are doing here right now is of equal importance because it has the ability to literally save life on the planet itself.”

Kerry said that most of the substances banned in the Montreal Protocol have increased the use of HFCs and claimed that the coolant was thousands of times more potent than CO2. He added that the increase of HFCs has led to the trend of global climate change.

“The use of hydrofluorocarbons is unfortunately growing,” Kerry said. “Already, the HFCs use in refrigerators, air conditioners, and other items are emitting an entire gigaton of carbon dioxide-equivalent pollution into the atmosphere annually. Now, if that sounds like a lot, my friends, it’s because it is. It’s the equivalent to emissions from nearly 300 coal-fired power plants every single year.” …

I’m surprised John Kerry has such a negative view of air conditioners. Air conditioners have played a surprisingly important part in the climate debate. If James Hansen and Tim Worth hadn’t sabotaged the Congress building Air Conditioner in 1988, the night before crucial testimony which kicked off the entire political climate movement, there might not have been a climate “crisis”.

Perhaps Kerry thinks if he makes Air Conditioners a thing of the past, the entire nation might experience the sweaty heat which proved so convincing on that fateful day in 1988.

The first thing that came to my mind was this Seinfeld episode.

If they ban AC, only outlaws will have fully automatic AC’s…
It has been hotter than Purgatory in the greater Boston Area the last two days. Speaking of Purgatory, Mr. Kerry can go to the other warm place instead.

“The Dunning–Kruger (DK) effect is a cognitive bias wherein unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their ability much higher than is accurate. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their ineptitude.”

He screwed up when he said “we” and quickly corrected to “you.” It’s YOUR air conditioner that’s a problem. Not his and Teresa’s.

The West is locked in a battle with Islamic Terror, like it or not.
What must the leadership of Al Qaeda, Hamas, ISIS, the Taliban, and the rest be thinking about the US Secretary of State, and the US after official statements like this?
For them, it must be bonus points all the way around.

So Mr Kerry, May I take it you will immediately remove all refrigerators, air conditioners, and other items from your home and your office? Get back to me when you do, then I’ll be willing to listen to what you have to say.

…are emitting an entire gigaton of carbon dioxide-equivalent pollution into the atmosphere annually. Now, if that sounds like a lot, my friends, it’s because it is.

I wonder how many “Hiroshima bombs” that equals.
Seriously though, What percentage is One Gigaton of CO2 compared to the entire supply of atmospheric CO2?
Someone here is bound to know the total atmospheric CO2 tonnage. No?

What you want is the conversion of the “warming power” of one gigaton of CO2 to the number of Hiroshima bombs (hereafter referred to as “Hiroshimas”). Plugging one gigaton into my Hiroshima calculator gets, let’s see; tap-tap-tik-tappity-tap; Tik-tikkety, tap. And the answer is; one bazillion Hiroshimas.
Give or take.

John Kerry demonstrates the fixation on abstract climate possibilities rather than clear and present dangers. There is money and egos at stake, but it is also a moral breakdown.

Poor John Kerry…
Is he that stupid or are Lefists that dumb to believe such inane propaganda?
I just turned on my air conditioner… It didn’t suddenly scream Allahu Akbar!!!! and spontaneously combust into a million pieces and takeout my neighborhood… It simply purred like a kitten and started pumping out glorious cool air…
We’ve enjoyed a total of about 0.82C of global warming recovery since the Little Ice Age ended in 1850, of which, CO2 has perhaps beneficially contributed 0.2C to this total… HFCs have perhaps beneficially contributed 0.002C of global warming since the 1950’s and literally saved 100’s of thousands of lives from heat stroke over the past 70 years…..
Jihadists have killed 14,000+ and injured 16,000 people just in last 6 months….
When will people finally appreciate and understand that Leftist tyrants have killed 100+ million of their own citizens in the 20th century…

Refrigeration makes the world much more efficient. For instance, if I want chicken salad for my picnic … no problem … I have refrigeration.
If my buddy’s grandmother back in the old country wants chicken for her picnic, she takes a live chicken and kills it on the spot.
You can live without refrigeration but not nearly as well. In the third world, lack of refrigeration leads to a lot of food waste.

Sources of waste exist all along the food chain … due to inadequate storage, lack of refrigeration, and exposure to sunlight. link

As far as I can tell, there’s darn little work on the public health implications of refrigeration and air conditioning. Like clean water and adequate sewers, refrigeration and air conditioning are largely uncredited for their role in producing the long healthy lives we enjoy today.

I had a conversation with a friend last night that went something like this:
“Why do the weather forecasts always come with so many provisos?”
“Well, I respond, the government doesn’t want to be sued for bad weather or wrong forecasts since they now have been telling everyone that they can control the planet’s climate”.

Wasn’t the Montreal Protocol sold also on the lower GWP of replacement refrigerants over 100 and 500 year lifetimes? AFAIK the replacements have residency lifetimes of under 75 years. They also save an enormous amount of energy. Kerry’s proposal is mere tinkering around the edges an activity suitable for dilettantes.
