It's official – Chicago experienced the coldest four months ever on record

slide_331920_3300262_free[1]
Weather Channel producer Shawn Reynolds tweeted this incredible photo taken by pilot Hank Cain of a tundra-like Chicago, from above on January 23rd, 2014
An over a century-old record falls.

The average temperature for December 2013 to March 2014 period in  Chicago was only 22.0°F, 10 degrees below freezing, beating the old record set in the winter of 1903-04. It even beat the harsh winters of 1977/78 which were some of the worst ever.

While stories rage in the media about how global warming is a threat to mankind and nobody will be left untouched by it, the National Weather Service in Chicago issued this statement today.

No, it isn’t an April fools joke.

Here is the statement:

Last year it snow in Baghdad, this year in Cairo (first time in over a hundred years.) Yet I am told that the abnormal cold is only in the US and the US does not make the world, after all world is still warming. My though yes it is still warming in the record keeper computers, and it will remain warming in their computers eve if ice sheets descend were yet again descending on Chicago, our Baghdad Bobs called climatologist will still insist that the world is warming. I truly believe they are cooking the books and we are probably in a cooling period. I can only hope the cooling period is brief and the world will continue to do a step change upward say in about twenty years, because I also know that where I spend most of my live only a few thousand years ago there was a sheet of ice covering that part of the world over a mile thick and we are not that many steps downward for that condition to return as the norm.

Ya’ see? That’s why we needed to change form global warming to climate change. if we had stuck with GW, people could measure and prove wrong. If we go with CC, who the heck is going to know what we’re talking about and we can continue to fool some of the people all of the time. If not all of the time, at least long enough to get regulations in place and then we can find a new phantom menace.
If you don’t measure, you can’t manage. If you can’t measure, you can’t manage.

What would provide more evidence for “extreme weather” than an all-time record? /sarc
Now we know why they emphasize the terms “extreme weather” and “climate change.” Record cold temperatures make “global warming” a tough sell, but they don’t necessarily falsify the idea of a changing climate or an increase in weather extremes. However, I still haven’t heard a convincing argument for how an increase in CO2 can cause record cold.

As you would expect, Detroit experienced a similar cold season. The 2nd snowiest ever so far and the 4th coldest Nov-Mar ever.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=dtx&storyid=100198&source=0
The occurrence of one cold and snowy Winter is obviously weather. What I find intriguing is the pattern over the last several decades.
Detroit had numerous mild/low snow Winters in the 1980’s/90’s while the earth experienced global warming and the PDO was positive. 4 of the lowest 20 snow seasons occurred during those 2 decades.
Since the PDO dropped into the negative zone around a decade ago, Detroit has had numerous snowy Winters. In fact, in the top 15, we find that 6 of the snowiest Winters have occurred in just the last 11 years. Which is half of the Winters during that period finishing in the top 15 of the past 130+ years of records.
#2 2013/14 91.7″
#5 2007/8 71.7″
#6 2010/11 69.1″
#10. 2008/9 65.7″
#11. 2004/5 63.8″
#15. 2002/3 60.9″
Does global warming cause more snow?
Well, snow amounts dropped off in the 1980’s/90’s when there was legit global warming. Shouldn’t we have seen snow increase then?
However, snow amounts during the last 11 years are the highest for any such period in Detroit’s recorded history, a time when the global temperature increase has stalled and the PDO, a natural cycle has flipped from positive to negative.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PDO.svg
This suggests that at the very least, the natural cycle shift, as seen in the PDO going from + to – around a decade ago is offsetting all the greenhouse gas warming effect from the CO2 (that has gone up every year during that time). With so much snow during that period it appears that snowy Winters are a result of or working in tandem to produce natural cooling which is completely offsetting the entire greenhouse gas warming effect for the last decade.
Northern Hemisphere snow cover in Winter has increased during the same time frame as Detroit:
http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_seasonal.php?ui_set=nhland&ui_season=1
Will the warming resume when this natural effect flips again? Maybe, but it’s evidence that for periods of longer than a decade(probably 3 decades considering the past PDO), natural climate change is at least as powerful and at times(50’s-70’s) even more powerful than greenhouse gas warming.
In other words, this is more evidence that the natural cycle(s) have been underestimated which means the human factor has been given too much weight.

I feel for you Americans – but imagine my distress, as I cope with the damaging effects of global warming in subtropical Hervey Bay, Australia. One day, if the globe experiences 10 degrees of warming or more, America may suffer the way I do – bathtub warm oceans and bright sunny days, even in winter, lots of beautiful young women running around the beach in skimpy swimwear, BBQs outdoors, because it is too hot to cook inside the house, long evenings drinking beer watching the thunderstorms, whale watching trips to see nature’s great mammals at play, a free waterpark provided by the local utility company, circuses, outdoor events, sports. Its tough I tell you, tough!

Earthquakes creating Climate change or the opposite. Icebergs in the Great Lakes caused by the Gore effect. Snowfall in Equatorial New Guinea caused by “Carbon Cooling”. The ice in my beer cooler melting to fast is the real test of “Global Warming”. Think I will invent a line of Al Gore “Climate Change” beer coolers. Bruce Cobb says: Yes, record cold winters….with signs that we are in fact cooling is “just weather”. Got it.
Don’t listen to me. Listen to WUWT and Roy Spencer when there were record high temperatures in March 2012 in parts of North America:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/04/16/usas-record-warm-march-not-caused-by-global-warming/
…avoid linking a weather pattern…
…attributing much to “randomness”…
The U.S. is a pretty small place (about 2% of the Earth)…
…we are talking about “weather”, not “climate change”.
That means that our unusual warmth is matched by unusual coolness someplace else.
…here we see evidence that our March warmth was simply a chance fluctuation in weather patterns.

For a little broader context:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=83371

On a global scale, land temperatures for the December through February period were actually the tenth warmest in the modern record, according to NCDC, 0.87°C (1.57°F) above the 20th century average. Far eastern Asia, particularly China and eastern Russia, were significantly warmer than normal. In Europe, Austria and The Netherlands observed the second warmest winters in their records, and Switzerland its third warmest. With temperatures as much as 5°C above normal, spring crops and plants began sprouting several weeks early across much of Europe. And in the southern summer, the extended heat waves in Australia and Argentina stand out.

There certainly was cold weather in Chicago this winter, though, and quite a few other places in the U.S. and Canada. No doubt about that.

Global warming – climate change – the terms have been used interchangeably for years. I guess you didn’t see the 2004 movie “The Day After Tomorrow,” which featured climate change/global warming as a plot point. Burning carbon fuels doesn’t make CO2. Nope. CO2 doesn’t cause a greenhouse effect. It’s all about those greedy scientists vs. those high integrity utility companies and heavy industries. Uh, sure, that makes perfect sense (walks away rolling eyes).

The Alarmists are going to trumpet the idea that the cold weather in the US this winter is an example of extreme weather produced by climate change. (There, I think I got all the boiler plate words right.)
All of us know that it was just weather. Mother Nature is once again showing us what she can do. She likes to do that.
If they would take a moment for thought, Alarmists would realize that their mantra of “extreme weather” makes no sense because, after all, it is just weather and not climate.

Didn’t the IPCC say extreme weather events were not caused by climate change? The gentleman who moved to Florida well done, but don’t you get hurricanes there instead. You can’t win eh. I lived in Bermuda and it is so low that early explorers couldn’t find it until they hit reefs.
The weather there was awful. Cold in winter, humid as hell in summer, but the sea was wonderfully clear and warm and the fish so tame. Except for the oil on the beaches. But we were on the edge of the hurricane belt and suffered from one. I went to a Higglerly Piggerly supermarket, and I could not really stand up well against the winds. As the roads were close to the sea, we got waves crashing over the mini minor we owned. Now if sea rises were to affect any island, Bermuda should be effected. Bleedin’ expensive though even for Americans.

April 1, 2014 7:41 pm

The summer of 1988 was brutally hot. I specifically remember WGN’s Tom Skilling stating that Chicago had recorded more 100 degree high temps that summer than they had since the city started keeping records. If you check the “official record” now they list only three days that the temp exceeded 100. So don’t worry about how cold it has been this year. If you check the record in 20 or 30 years you will find that it wasn’t nearly as cold as you remember. The record will be “corrected” for your own good. Probably makes you warmer just thinking about it. I know it makes me pretty hot!
I don’t know where Weather Underground gets their info but I recorded the local reported high and low for every day last year, just in case, and those temps have already been “corrected” on their website.
Where has the honor in science gone?

bushbunny
April 1, 2014 7:49 pm

Who listens to school kids or university students, who are still learning about life and their place in their society and food chain. Minus 10 C is cold, we get it here in Australia, but it warms up during the day. But in comparison to when I was living in UK, Gee, it was cold there without central heating. And it depended on where you lived. Weather patterns vary in UK and Oz.
Richard will remember, when TV first came available in England and we only had the BBC, we ridiculed the weather predictions. I have radar surveillance available here. Storm trackers and the Bureau of Meteorology. It can change in hours. And even if warnings are out for extreme weather, they sometimes pass over our town. Better to be pre-warned I suspect. But recently a typhoon hit a small place not far from where I live. It destroyed a ladies home, that was not built to sustain such winds. But her next door neighbour was OK. There was no warning.

bushbunny
April 1, 2014 7:55 pm

If I have read it correctly the IPCC is generalising and there predictions seem to match more a cooling climate than a warmer one, when precipitation usually increases. Other than in desert areas or inland from the sea. It depends on the size of the land mass and its shape. Australia is two thirds arid.

You can tell which side is lying on global warming, sorry, climate change, or is it called something else now?…global cooling?…Whatever. Anyway, you can tell which side is lying on many issues. As usual, the Left will ignore th reality of our weather because it does not fit in with their ‘full speed ahead to save Earth’s climate’ mentality. Which, of course, is the tool they need to regulate and tax us to do as they want. Claiming the superior moral high ground because THEY are going to save the planet by exerting their will over us. Really they don’t care about the climate, it’s all about the taxation and regulation.

Was this based on raw temperature data? We all know that you can’t just measure the temperature you have to adjust it to get the real picture. Snow in the middle east is not unusual, don’t they read their tale of the Nativity. It snows in Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, but generally not in Egypt. One of my former school friends living In Israel, said one day. Snow one day and hot the next. Never know what to wear. Even snows in Australia. But where I live it we have deeper snow that doesn’t disappear in a day, we are in the pooh. As we are on a plateau or tablelands, the roads to and from are likely to be covered in ice.
We have power failures. Generally this only happens for a few days. So we use candles and BBQ’s or buy our food cooked from gas from take aways. But we miss TV. Luckily it doesn’t happen often. But water pumps for rain water do freeze.

Entering a likely 70-year “dead sun” Grand Solar Minimum similar to that of 1645 – 1715, cycles of ever-diminishing wavelength, higher frequency, project that AD 2010 – 2029 (twenty years) will succeed the thirty-year warm-phase from 1980 – 2009, which in turn followed forty years of relative chill from c. 1940 – 1979.
Given the previous fifty-year rebound (1890 -1939) from Earth’s 500-year Little Ice Age (LIA), it seems that short-term climatic pulses will soon shake Earth’s global thermostat to pieces, after 2030 chaotically switching off-and-on through AD 2100.
Since –due to the 1,500-year Younger Dryas “cold shock” that ended c. BC 7300– our current Holocene Interglacial Epoch would normally have ended about AD 450, coincident with the fading Roman Warm, odds favor a resurgent Pleistocene Ice Time lasting a median 102,000 years. Should technological advances not suffice to move approximately 6-billion souls off-planet from c. 2050, Earth’s hominid population will have shrunk 90% a century or two from now.

We keep being told that weather is not climate by the greens and CAGW-ologists – How come the Oxford English Dictionary gets it so wrong?
climate
n noun
1 the general weather conditions prevailing in an area over a long period.
2 a prevailing trend or public attitude: the current economic climate.
DERIVATIVES
climatic adjective
climatical adjective
climatically adverb
ORIGIN
Middle English (orig. denoting a zone of the earth between two lines of latitude, later a region considered with ref. to its atmospheric conditions): from Old French climat or late Latin clima, climat-, from Greek klima ‘slope, zone’.

For the states close to the Canadian border , this was a record cold winter. Overall, for United States it was the 34 the coldest since 1895. It looks like 2014/2015 winter may be milder with a possible weak El Nino on the horizon. However the long term out look could be colder winters like we had 1895-1920 and again 1954-1979 as the ocean cycles swing into their cool mode . This has already been happening since 1998 . The winter temperatures have been declining now for 16 years at about 1.78F/ decade according to NCDC/NOAA, CLIMATE AT A GLANCE data.. Matter of fact 8 out 12 months are also cooling . Winters , spring and fall are cooling while summer is still warming . So we better get used to cooler temperatures as they may be around for several decades to come.

There is a possibility that the US/North America, Siberia/USSR, Greenland and Europe will experience the first signs of global cooling, because if cooling sets in from the weak sun, and also the negative PDO, the land areas of the northern hemisphere might be expected to experience cooling first. The southern hemisphere has too much water, which retains heat longer. Greenland is already cooling apparently since the mid?-late 20th century, so this is a good sign.
It;s good for skeptics because most of the research and blogosphere goes on in the US/Canada and western Europe, so this is fortuitous, you could call it another Gore effect-one of the first places to experience significant global cooling might be Gore’s home country. Interesting to watch in the next 20 years, I reckon temperature might cool for the next few decades. Here’s hoping anyway.

I cannot make short term predictions of weather / temperature.
I can only make long term predictions – about 15- 20 years or more. 🙂
I wrote in an article in the Calgary Herald published on September 1, 2002:
On global cooling:
“If (as I believe) solar activity is the main driver of surface temperature rather than CO2, we should begin the next cooling period by 2020 to 2030.”
When I wrote this in 2002, SC 24 was predicted to be strong, and we now know it is quite weak.
I still think my 2002 global cooling prediction will materialize, although I wonder if this cooling will start a bit sooner than 2020.

I believe that in Australia the change of season also give unsettled weather, maybe the same with Chicago? We are heading into mid Autumn started 1st March. Our rainfall has been spasmodic and drought is experienced in our region New England, in some areas, as the elevation varies. We have had some very good rain in the recent week, now it is settling down again. Average temps are mid 20s, and lower at night 10 C to 15C

DAVID [SWUK]
You were wondering why BBC was not telling you about our cold weather. It has been my observation that temperature data collection groups like NOAA/NCDC and the Met Office are clearly biased in reporting only warming events and none of the cooling events . Not only have winters been getting cooler since 1998 in Contiguous US [48 states] and Canada , but winters have been getting colder for the Northern Hemisphere and for the Globe as a whole. Not every year was colder and not every region was colder but the long term trend is that winters have been getting colder since 1998. This past winter North America had a record cold , but Europe and Asia did not , resulting in slight warming for North Hemisphere as a whole for the 2013/2014 winter compared to the previous winter.North America is experiencing a cold cycle currently like they had 1895-1920 and again 1955-1979 and hence I see this cooler pattern to continue for several decades . Next winter for North America may be warmer compared to the cold one we just had because of the potential of weak El Nino , but this could mean more winter storms in Uk and Europe next winter as El Ninos sometime come with more negative AO days which brings the colder weather to Uk sometime ..

April 3, 2014 7:44 pm

“global warming is a threat to mankind and nobody will be left untouched by it” The extreme cold temps are part of the global warming. I know it has “warm” in the phrase, but take 10 minutes, rub your two brain cells together, and read about what global warming is. It does not mean that it will be all hot, all the time. It means that there will be an overall global increase in temperatures as well as severe weather patterns, both hot and cold. It’s really not a difficult concept if you just put a tiiiiiiny bit of effort into it.

Candice, AGW alarmists are getting things wrong and becoming defensive to the point of libelous suggestions by some. ” Global warming causing the increased cold” Where? And where is your data to prove this? How can you compare one continent with another, it’s autumn in Australia. Yet our states do vary in their separate micro-climates. We have a monsoon belt up in Northern Australia. Snow on the higher peaks and quite honestly, there is nothing we can do to reverse weather patterns, just hope it doesn’t get too extreme and another glacial period is on the horizon.
And a few years ago, California did experience snow and late frosts at an unusual time of year.
Here in Australia, when it was November, (our late spring) we had snow all the way up to the Queensland border, and sleet/snow on December 23-24th in New England. We put our fires back on. But American cities have experienced a very cold winter. And it appears to be prolonged. But when it snows in Mexico, or Texas then you should see this as extreme but if it continues, then we will have problems.
Climate is what we expect, but weather is what we get. And weather kills us, with volcanoes, hurricanes, cyclones, tsunamis and earthquakes. And disease.

bushbunny

Oh, Candice, was it true Al Gore was handing out pamphlets at a UFO convention, stating the globe was too cold for aliens to settle here, and when the global warming continued as predicted we earthlings were in danger of some unearthly UFO coming to settle here.
