Quote of the Week – 'global warming fear is damaging our young'

qotw_cropped

WUWT reader “Newty” writes in a comment in response to the National Geographic scaremongering at 2013/11/05 at 12:38 pm

Seriously though I was terrified before I first started coming here. I’ve recently become a father and we did question bringing children into the world when the threat of global warming seemed so certain and so imminent.

I work with children and many of them are seriously anxious as a result of just this kind of article that sits in the school library.

It reminds me of how I worried about nuclear war years ago. Fear is damaging our young who should grow up with optimism and hope.

I couldn’t agree more, best wishes to you and to your family – Anthony

@rtj211 –
An excellent summary of how scaremongering works – should be taught in schools, as part of the critical thinking curriculum (that is, if schools nowadays even teach critical thinking – dubious considering how ideologues have turned education so far towards pure indoctrination).

RE: All the vegan talk.
Personally, I don’t give a rat’s patoot what other folks prefer for their food. I learned a long time ago that it’s a pointless discussion. I also learned to eat nearly anything that didn’t eat me first (courtesy of the USMC, and a old war). So y’all vegans go do your thing. Ditto, meat eaters, or whatever. Just don’t try to impose your preferences on me. They won’t be welcome.
Same goes for other cultural taboos/issues such as religion, politics, etc. Y’all go your way, and I’ll go mine.

These idiots need to toughen up and grow a set.
From my earliest times when I learned of the four minute warning all through my teens, I was pretty sure we wouldn’t live to see the year 2000.
I expected to hear this announcement on a BBC radio station long before that:
This is the Wartime Broadcasting Service.
This country has been attacked with nuclear weapons. Communications have been severely disrupted, and the number of casualties and the extent of the damage are not yet known. We shall bring you further information as soon as possible. Meanwhile, stay tuned to this wavelength, stay calm and stay in your own house.
Remember there is nothing to be gained by trying to get away. By leaving your homes you could be exposing yourself to greater danger.
If you leave, you may find yourself without food, without water, without accommodation and without protection. Radioactive fall-out, which follows a nuclear explosion, is many times more dangerous if you are directly exposed to it in the open. Roofs and walls offer substantial protection. The safest place is indoors. Make sure gas and other fuel supplies are turned off and that all fires are extinguished. If mains water is available, this can be used for fire-fighting. You should also refill all your containers for drinking water after the fires have been put out, because the mains water supply may not be available for very long.
Water must not be used for flushing lavatories: until you are told that lavatories may be used again, other toilet arrangements must be made. Use your water only for essential drinking and cooking purposes. Water means life. Don’t waste it.
Make your food stocks last: ration your supply, because it may have to last for 14 days or more. If you have fresh food in the house, use this first to avoid wasting it: food in tins will keep.
If you live in an area where a fall-out warning has been given, stay in your fall-out room until you are told it is safe to come out. When the immediate danger has passed the sirens will sound a steady note. The “all clear” message will also be given on this wavelength. If you leave the fall-out room to go to the lavatory or replenish food or water supplies, do not remain outside the room for a minute longer than is necessary.
Do not, in any circumstances, go outside the house. Radioactive fall-out can kill. You cannot see it or feel it, but it is there. If you go outside, you will bring danger to your family and you may die. Stay in your fall-out room until you are told it is safe to come out or you hear the “all clear” on the sirens.
Here are the main points again: Stay in your own homes, and if you live in an area where a fall-out warning has been given stay in your fall-out room, until you are told it is safe to come out. The message that the immediate danger has passed will be given by the sirens and repeated on this wavelength. Make sure that the gas and all fuel supplies are turned off and that all fires are extinguished. Water must be rationed, and used only for essential drinking and cooking purposes. It must not be used for flushing lavatories. Ration your food supply–it may have to last for 14 days or more.
We shall be on the air every hour, on the hour. Stay tuned to this wavelength, but switch your radios off now to save your batteries. That is the end of this broadcast.

Using children is an admission that the adults and their argument are up the creek…it is all about emotion….they never discuss the science because they can’t. Most really don’t know what is going on.

All very clear indications of a lack of B12 (and probably more). Vegan I tried once for a month but lack of energy was happening to me within a month. People really need to book up on things before they try them and listen to your body for feedback. Keep a diary. Most importantly don’t just “tough it out” or “stick it out just a bit longer”. One month is plenty to see how you feel. If you don’t feel better switch back.
Trying to substitute plant based EPA/DHA is faulty as well because it is all short chain and needs to go through a 9 step conversion to long chain before your body makes good use of it. If some enzymes are missing the process stops and you are deficient. Although they have DHA from algae now I’ll stick with the purified fish oil from the south Atlantic derived from small sealife (krill, sardines, etc).

“This report aims both to fill in the gap in our awareness of the psychological impacts
of climate change, and by exposing the emotional side of the issue, to find the place in
our hearts that mobilizes us to fly into action, forewarned, determined, relentless. It also
is a call for professionals in the mental health fields to focus on this, the social justice
issue of all times, with their capacity to work through denial and apathy, to bring insight

If God didn’t mean for humans to eat animals, why are they all made up of meat. No seriously, it is is a pet peeve of mine when people try to convince me that humans were not meant to eat meat… and then they show us how rats fare better when consuming plant life instead of bacon. I come back and say if we were not meant to eat meat and only plants, why can we eat grass and thrive? Why can we starve in a forest where other animals thrive?
I think people’s physiology are not all the same.
That said, I think a mix of lots of plant varieties and flesh serve me well. After all we are omnivorous.

What you fine people seem to not understand is that there is a direct correlation between CO2 levels/emissions and the global average temperature. Climate change being reported and informed to children is not “terrorism”, “Bullying”, or “playing on the fears of the American people”, as you seem to think. It is merely reporting scientifically proven facts to the American people. And, as we have shown before, these facts are alarming. However, they MUST be alarming in order for them to be acknowledged and addressed by the public at large. And even still, these anecdotal bits of evidence, about how a child cried about global warming, or about how a family killed themselves due to fear of global warming, are irrelevant, because A: they are based upon falsehood or misconceptions, and B: Are not representative of the American people as a whole.
In addition, to this guy? Mario Lento? The one who talked about his intern and the windmill in front of the budweiser plant? I’m gonna ASSUME you meant a wind turbine, based upon your talking about power-production methods. However, there is a WORLD of difference between a windmill and a wind turbine. A windmill is used for grinding grain or pumping water, while a wind turbine is used for the production of electricity for use in electronic systems. In addition, if the windmill was never turning, it is rather likely that either A: You were going by it at a time when the wind wasn’t blowing, or B: The wind turbine was either poorly installed or poorly placed. Either way, the efficiency of a single wind turbine cannot be used to judge the efficiency of wind turbines as a whole. It is likely that this wind turbine is largely for show, and is not actually meant to fully provide power to the budweiser plant. That, or it is meant to supplement the power the factory gets from your area’s power grid. In fact, the theory that a single wind turbine would have backup systems at all is absurd, considering the fact that a single wind turbine would be almost completely incapable of powering an entire factory, regardless of its size.

I agree that scaremongering towards children is child abuse. Propaganda at its
worst.
I say, why can’t it be? :
“Congratulations children, The Energy sources that fuel our economies and our prosperity, give us long life and comfort, these fossil fuels will also cause our planet to warm gently, about 2C degrees over the next century. What luck!
With the warmth and extra CO2 for plant life, millions of acres of tundra will become forests. Millions of acres of frozen steppe will become arable. Starvation will end. Prosperity will reach even the poorest people. We must keep searching for and burning oil and coal so we can improve our climate and prosper. Humanity will become wealthy. With this wealth we can preserve habitat for animals, protect the rain forest. We will clean the oceans and the land. Our future is bright. We are entering the age of abundance. “
Also, this is literally the most hilariously uninformed thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I can’t decide whether to be furious or laughing.

Excuse me. Tap tap tap. New Guidelines Call for Broad Changes in Science Education
“Educators unveiled new guidelines on Tuesday that call for sweeping changes in the way science is taught in the United States — including, for the first time, a recommendation that climate change be taught as early as middle school.
Educators involved in drawing them up said the guidelines were intended to combat widespread scientific ignorance, to standardize teaching among states, and to raise the number of high school graduates who choose scientific and technical majors in college, a critical issue for the country’s economic future.
The focus would be helping students become more intelligent science consumers by learning how scientific work is done: how ideas are developed and tested, what counts as strong or weak evidence, and how insights from many disciplines fit together into a coherent picture of the world.
Leaders of the effort said that teachers may well wind up covering fewer subjects, but digging more deeply into the ones they do cover. In some cases, traditional classes like biology and chemistry may disappear entirely from high schools, replaced by courses that use a case-study method to teach science in a more holistic way.”
Common Core is not state led, but was adopted by states when funding was offered and/or threatened. This so called “holistic science” and the “Common Core” is really a centralized, failed, and ghastly approach to educating children funded by Bill Gates.
This is the equivalent of allowing the big Unions to regulate and manage smaller, innovative competitors. Every one pays ten times as much for one tenth as much.

What you fine people seem to not understand is that there is a direct correlation between CO2 levels/emissions and the global average temperature.

Odd things, these facts, you see.
While CO2 was steady, temperature rose, was steady, and fell by about 0.3 degrees C over a 70 year period.
While CO2 rose steadily over a 20 year period, temperature fell by about 0.20 degrees.
While CO2 rose steadily over a 23 year period, temperature rose by about 0.30 degrees.
While CO2 rose steadily over a 17 year period, temperature remained steady.
Now, just what is this relationship you claim is so direct?

Climate change being reported and informed to children is not “terrorism”, “Bullying”, or “playing on the fears of the American people”, as you seem to think. It is merely reporting scientifically proven facts to the American people.

See above. There is no scientifically proven relationship, merely government-paid bureaucrats paying government-paid PhD’s in government-paid labs using government-paid computers and programers to simulate government-paid research to find reasons to raise 1.3 trillion in new government taxes and government-seeking energy controls.

And, as we have shown before, these facts are alarming. However, they MUST be alarming in order for them to be acknowledged and addressed by the public at large.

So, any lie is justified as long as it is your lie, (or exaggeration) that you believe is justified by your life style, as long as your lifestyle is not inconvenienced or threatened.

Yes you’re correct perhaps you’d be happier if I called them bird slashers. There is more than one wind turbine in the world –many hundreds in view from where I live. They need back up generation because there is more than one of them. This turbine is in fact located in a windy area in south Fairfield. But perhaps you do not understand that the wind needs to be in a narrow range of speed for the turbine to harness the energy and the grid needs to supply energy to get the blades rotating at speed when the wind blows just right for them to operate.
If these devices were economical, which is the point here, then they would not need huge subsidies, and they would not need to use back up generation to be allowed to provide electricity when they just happen to be turning –and the grid or PGE would not be forced to buy their electricity at guaranteed rates. The backup generation required to be in use needs to be less efficient to ramp up when said wind turbines don’t keep up.
Without subsidies, there would not be a wind turbine market. Only fools would but them in areas where the grid could otherwise supply ample lower cost electricity.

Hi Janice. At least Micheal Andrews admits for all of us to see that his words are not based in truth. That Micheal Andrews does not have any idea what the global temperatures have been this century suggests that his “useful mind” is under the control of other people who seek weak minded messengers to convince other similarly ignorant people to follow him. What’s sad is that once exposed to the truth, I am convinced he will not accept it.
Janice, Is there hope that once Micheal Andrews takes a look at the temperature records, he can come to understand that the truth is not as scary as the fears implanted into his mind?
