Climate Science and "The Cause"

One of the very first things noticed on WUWT about the Climategate 2.0 emails is the use of the phrase “The Cause” by writers of the emails. Science is supposed to be about cause and effect, causality, etc, not an advocacy of a position in the name of a cause.

Elmer at M4GW offers this video, well worth watching.

He is only in it for the money and those of us here in the northern climate prefer our roofs black.

Of course you do, because that allows all that heat that builds up inside your house to be more efficiently radiated into space at night. You don’t want to get too hot at night in those Northern winters.
(as the nights are much longer than the days and black is a more efficient radiator of heat, a white roof would keep your house warmer by reflecting that heat back inward).

“The Cause” sounds to me like a typical (self-important) leftist movement.

crosspatch quotes:
December 2, 2011 at 12:56 pm
“When the glaciers are very rapidly melted by the upswell of a major eruption the water flow equals all the flows of all the major rivers in the world – for a short period of time.”
What is there that is underneath all the major glaciers and that is subject to a major eruption?
Is someone claiming that there is one volcano that extends beneath all high mountains on Earth?
How long is that short period of time? One nanosecond?
Idiocy upon idiocy.

I enjoyed the video, Elmer. I’m looking forward to your next offering. I still get a thrill out of your “Hide the Decline” (the original) and also loved “I’m a Believer”. Remember, Christmas is coming! How about “Happy XMas! Warm is over” if you could make something of such a sappy song. Of course, the end of warming is bad news for Minnesota, so you probably disagree with the sentiment anyway.

Here’s a Christmas song idea: Mike Mann sings “Santa ‘Cause’ is Coming to Town”
You better watch out
You better hide the decline
Or we’ll make sure
That your funding’s offline
Santa “Cause” is Coming to Town!
He’s making a skeptic list
And checking it twice
Gonna let the climate journal editors know
Who’s naughty or nice
Santa “Cause” is Coming to Town!
He sees you at “Real Climate”
He knows your research mistakes
He knows if your paper is bad or good
And it better support AGW for goodness sakes
Oh, you better watch out
You better not cry
If there’s too much CO2
Then we’re all gonna fry
Santa “Cause” is Coming to Town!

“The Cause” was very much a part of the newspeak in the communist countries. To learn more one should read the Solzhenicin`s book “In the Interest of the Cause”. IT sounds even better in german: “Im Interesse der Sache”.

Speaking of Chicken LIttle; Australia’s ABC News interrupted the evening news bulletin with a religious message from some has-been molester of wildlife; who reckons that the ice is melting at the poles. I changed channels after 2 seconds into the message sponsored by WWF and Greenpeace.
I bought a newish atlas for my niece. I failed to check all the pages before purchase — mea culpa. Caveat emptor. There were several pages of global warming propaganda and how we were destroying the planet. In an atlas for 8 to 12 year-olds.
We’re smothered with the messages everywhere. Even technical reference books e.g. the Bosch book on Diesel-Engine Management says:

Carbon dioxide is a natural component of atmospheric air, and the CO2 contained in automotive exhaust gases is not classified as a pollutant. However, it is one of the substances responsible for the greenhouse effect and the global climate change that this causes. In the period since 1920, atmospheric CO2 has risen continuously, from roughly 300 ppm to approx 450 ppm in the year 2001.

Then there’s a whole page to explain the greenhouse hypothesis, just before the index pages. To be fair, it does say:

While some scientists maintain that anthroprogenic emissions are the primary source of climate change, this theory is challenged by other experts, who believe that the warming of the earth’s atmosphere is being caused by increased solar activity.

No consensus.

Crosspatch says: “… If you look at the number of square miles of roof space on the planet and were to paint it all while, it would act like ice in reflecting the sun’s rays and could trigger a pretty significant cooling….”
How does the square footage of black asphalt on the earth compare to the square footage of roof tops on the earth? If they are around the same magnitude, then if you claim that painting the roofs white may significantly cool the earth, you now have to assert that all the black pavements around the globe may have already significantly warmed it.

This “Cause”is as close to a modern COSA NOSTRA as you will find.

December 3, 2011 9:27 pm

I agree with many of you that this “cause” has nothing to do with science, and everything to do with egocentric and/or political agendas. And yet so many people just sign on because others do. It’s been proven time and again that the data is not conclusive. But the movie…yes, Oliver Stone! A real blockbuster if it simply states the facts…can that be done without propagandizing and still be a money-maker? I hope so!

In winter climates, all roofs are white in the winter. Its called snow.

Great job by M4GW! It would be even more believable if there were some shots of beaches in Tahiti, luxury hotels in Copenhagen etc.
Let’s put a stake into this mess and move on, I’m ready.

It’s worth noting that the phrase “the cause” has been prototypically of the left for a century and a half. Che Guevara, the IRA and the Red Brigades all come to mind.
