Climate Science and "The Cause"

One of the very first things noticed on WUWT about the Climategate 2.0 emails is the use of the phrase “The Cause” by writers of the emails. Science is supposed to be about cause and effect, causality, etc, not an advocacy of a position in the name of a cause.

Elmer at M4GW offers this video, well worth watching.

  1. Some of us are behind filters that disallow YouTube video. Is there another format that is just as convenient?

  2. Great vid. One day, I am sure, a blockbuster movie will be made, and it will expose the whole sordid tale. I bet it would be a box office hit. Who will direct it – Oliver Stone, perhaps?

this is a terrific news blip (watch the video). When the glaciers are very rapidly melted by the upswell of a major eruption the water flow equals all the flows of all the major rivers in the world – for a short period of time. Quite fascinating and they are nervously monitoring what appears to be an imminent large explosion.

  4. Thanks for posting,
I took the movie trailer from the new movie “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and changed the soundtrack and added some of the actual quotes from the latest round of emails.

  5. Here is part of an article written in 2000 by the Tim M(itchell)who wrote some of the CRU data base programs Harry refers to in the famous Harry Readme email
“Climate change and the ChristianIs global warming the end of the world or media scare-mongering?Global warming is often seen as either the end of the world as we know it, or as mere media scare-mongering. Which is right?Could it be that I, a respectable Christian, am partly to blame? Might I need to change the way I live? Before we search for climate changes, we ought first to understand what it is that might be changing. The climate system is made up of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans, ice, vegetation, and streams. It is both beautiful and complex. Humans have a mandate to forecast its behaviour and use it (Genesis 1:28). However, we feel in awe of its destructive potential, seen in such things as hurricanes and floods, which are part of the curse inflicted upon the earth following the Fall (Genesis 3.17). Moreover, control and certainty belong to God alone (Job 38-41). So there is a possibility that our actions may affect the climate system in unexpected ways. It was claimed in the 1970s that the earth might be about to enter an ice age. The evidence for this was minimal, but the decades of painstaking research that have followed the 1970s have unveiled both the natural variability in the climate system, and the dramatic effects of human actions. To assemble a record of global climate changes over the last 150 years we use instrumental records, such as rain gauges and thermometers. Since it is only recently that such instruments have been widely used, to reconstruct climate changes prior to the 19th century we are compelled to use indirect sources of information, such as tree ring widths and ice core layers.Using this mixture of data, we have assembled global temperature records for the last millennium. There is much natural variability throughout the records, but there is also a 20th-century rise in global temperature that is unprecedented in its magnitude and rate of change. Is it merely a coincidence that this global warming has come at the same time as the huge expansion in human population and industrialisation that we have seen in the 20th century?……….Firstly, now that we know the consequences, should we continue to pollute? Secondly, given that we may be responsible for hurting our fellow humans, should we help them? To my mind, the Scriptures are clear. Humans are stewards, not masters, of God’s creation (Genesis 2.15), and one day we will have to account for our stewardship (Luke 19.11-27). While it is not wrong to change the atmosphere, it is wrong to change it more than we need, certainly if it is at the expense of poor people. Making money at the expense of the weak is condemned (Luke 20.47), and to assist the weak is praised (James 1.27). Yet continuing as we are will make us richer at the expense of the poor. Given that we have stolen from the poor of the world by our pollution, we might learn from Zacchaeus (Luke 19.8). In our selfish world, each state pursues its own interests……..The government urges us to reduce our energy usage so that we may indulge ourselves in other ways, but we have a higher motive for reducing waste (1 Timothy 6.17-19). Although I have yet to see any evidence that climate change is a sign of Christ’s imminent return, human pollution is clearly another of the birth pangs of creation, as it eagerly awaits being delivered from the bondage of corruption (Romans. 19-22).Tim Mitchell works at the Climactic Research Unit, UEA, Norwich, and is a member of South Park Evangelical Church.”Sounds like his motivations are similar to Sir John Houghton.Did this conciously affect the way he assembled the data bases? Who can say?
Sir John Houghton is a key promoter of the Cause and has used his top positions in the Met Office and IPCC to propagandise the warmist viewpoint. He is a religious evangelist and has said eg.
“Christians and other religious people believe that we’ve been put on the earth to look after it. Creation is not just important to us, we believe also it is important to God and that the rest of creation has an importance of its own… we are destroying forests, important forests. When I say “we” I mean “we” the human race of which we are part. We are party to the destruction, we allow it to happen, in fact it helps to make us richer. We really need to take our responsibility as ‘gardeners’ more seriously”
    Wiki says
He was brought up as a Calvinistic Methodist in the Presbyterian Church of Wales and has remained a strong Christian throughout his life and sees science and Christianity as strengthening each other and believes strongly in the connection between Christianity and environmentalism. Houghton’s evangelical Christianity combined with his scientific background has made him a significant voice in evangelical Christian circles. Winning the support of Richard Cizik one of the most prominent Evangelical lobbyists in the United States is a notable example of how Houghton has had a significant effect. He is currently an elder at Aberdovey Presbyterian Church…….
Houghton is currently Honorary Scientist of the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research at the Meteorological Office; Honorary Scientist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory; a Trustee of the Shell Foundation; and Chairman of the John Ray Initiative.[3]
    Previously Sir John was
a Member of the UK Government Panel on Sustainable Development (1994–2000)
Chairman, Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (1992–98)
Chairman or Co-Chairman, Scientific Assessment Working Group, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (1988–2002)
Director General (later Chief Executive), UK Meteorological Office (1983–91)
    Director Appleton, Science and Engineering Research Council (also Deputy Director, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory)(1979–83);
Professor of Atmospheric Physics, Oxford University (1976–83).
As can be seen by this brief career summary from Wiki he has been a key influence in the IPCC warmist paradigm

  6. Is that trailer for real? Looking at some ofthe British actors appearing in it, I am rather surprised that they would have approved necessarily, as several have been linked to the Warmistas in the past! Oh well, takes all sorts I suppose!
HAGWE everyone! Singing acapella down at Eden (in Cornwall) on Sunday with Globa Harmony 50 strong, getting everbody into the Christmas spirit. Eden is interesting but littered with the Warmista mantra all over the place. Catch up later.

  7. What science is supposed to be about has never truly been a part of this mess. It has always been about politics and there “the cause”. I know I have said it before: Anytime a political organization or massive bureaucracy becomes involved with anything it become political. The doing Science is not supposed to be related to the funding source and or politics behind the sponsor. For the most part gathering empirical data is like that. It is when the “ends justify the means” and egocentric personalities becomes the philosophical driver, that this kind of foolishness or ideology takes over.

Great vid. One day, I am sure, a blockbuster movie will be made, and it will expose the whole sordid tale. I bet it would be a box office hit. Who will direct it – Oliver Stone, perhaps?

Why, none other than James Cameron of course!
He’s already directed a hugely-successful film warning of the dangers of spreading Arctic ice, and I seem to recall him saying (about advocate scientists suppressing debate I think…) that he wants to call them “out into the street at high noon and shoot it out with those boneheads.”
Clearly he’s on the side of truth and justice – the perfect man for the job.

  9. You put “The Cause” in quotes as if it was written that way with capital letters in the mails, to be fair I don’t think it was. You might consider removing the quotes or the capital letters.

  10. Excellent, Elmer – thank you! I enjoyed it very much.
    I fervently hope you’re working on a new song for CG2 ….!

  11. So, which BBC editor added these two paragraphs to the straight article about a likely eruption of Katla?
“But the biggest threat to Iceland’s icecaps is seen as climate change, not the volcanoes that sometimes melt the icecaps.
“They have begun to thin and retreat dramatically over the last few decades, contributing to the rise in sea levels that no eruption of Katla, however big, is likely to match.”

  12. Oh my, L5Rick, I am “shocked” (NOT) that they could be so blatant. It seems that the warministas deliberately discount the real causes in order to claim that it is “climate change”.
I honestly doubt that the ice caps are melting to the degree that is being stated. Those ice caps can withstand high temperatures. I am no scientist but I have seen it for myself in Canada. The Columbia Icefield that is close to both Lake Louise and Banff has a glacier that is a tourist attraction. When I was there, the temperature at Lake Louise was very close to 100F. The glacier was a bit mushy but it did not disappear! That is all the evidence that I need to conclude that when these clowns make statements about disappearing icecaps, they are just talking nonsense (except I prefer another word).

  13. “The Cause” … ” My Struggle” (aka Mein Kampf) …. “The Base” (aka Al Qaida) … such things are really not all that far apart.
When the ravings of certain cadre of so called “intellectuals” are married with a mass movement and thence to the force of arms, things like what happened during the 20th Century and seemingly now, the 21st, are inevitable.

Get back to bed! This is grown-up time kiddo.

Even that story carries the obligatory BBC “climate change” propaganda in the last two paragraphs:

But the biggest threat to Iceland’s icecaps is seen as climate change, not the volcanoes that sometimes melt the icecaps.
They have begun to thin and retreat dramatically over the last few decades, contributing to the rise in sea levels that no eruption of Katla, however big, is likely to match.

Jane O’Brien gives no source for this information. I have seen no evidence of any change in the rate of sea level rise “over the past few decades” in fact the evidence is to the contrary, the rate of sea level rise has slowed. Exactly who was her source for the statement ” the biggest threat to Iceland’s icecaps is seen as climate change” or did she just insert that herself as the “conventional wisdom”?

Solar, Wind Stocks Rise, First Time in a Long Time
    http://www.sustainablebusiness.com/index.cfm/go/news.display/id/23204
Yesterday’s announcement that the world’s central banks would step in to help resolve the EU debt crisis, combined with China raising its feed-in payments for renewable electricity, boosted solar and wind stocks for the first time in a long time.
Solar stocks are at all-time lows.
The liquidity added to the system by the central banks will make it easier to finance solar and wind projects and aid short-term demand.
Today, Bill Clinton announces his new initiative….

I find this peculiar, especially given the last lines of the report. This happened last in 1918, with quite a lot of glacial disruption. Given that the glacier is supposed to have been “melting” due to global warming since the 1940’s, then it must have laid down the entire ice volume currently under threat in the period 1918-1940’s.
That seems to be a lot of snow in a very short period of time. Or the “global warming is melting it” assertion is garbage. Your choice.

Painting of roofs white could be catastrophic if it was done on a large enough scale. If you look at the number of square miles of roof space on the planet and were to paint it all while, it would act like ice in reflecting the sun’s rays and could trigger a pretty significant cooling. Take a large city that is closer to the equator such as Mexico City and paint every roof on the city white and you end up reflecting a lot of the visible spectrum, add an IR and UV reflective primer and the impact is even greater. Painting of roofs white is a great way to counteract UHI. If done in a city such as Los Angeles or Phoenix, it could reduce the temperatures of those cities by up to 2 degrees F in the summer (UCLA study).
Don’t laugh at painting roofs white, it would be very effective. Probably TOO effective. It directly defeats any GH impact by reflecting the solar radiation into space before it has a chance to be converted to long wave IR. But if done on a global scale, could possibly trigger another glaciation as it’s impact on albedo could be extreme particularly in metro areas such as Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Imagine hundreds, perhaps thousands of square miles of Earth’s surface suddenly going from black to white. And I am *not* joking.

  19. @ crosspatch,
Please don’t give bill any ideas. He is only in it for the money and those of us here in the northern climate prefer our roofs black. If you re-read my post the most serious item is the first link referencing how central bank intervention benefitted the green boondoggles. It then raises suspicions about who had foreknowledge of the central bank acting that way (hence Bill’s announcement today). This is the same as the recent revelations that the former Secretary of Treasury Hank Paulson tipped off his buddies at Goldman Sachs regarding the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailouts.
    http://dailybail.com/home/how-hank-paulson-warned-hedge-funds-in-advance.html

  20. He is only in it for the money and those of us here in the northern climate prefer our roofs black.

Of course you do, because that allows all that heat that builds up inside your house to be more efficiently radiated into space at night. You don’t want to get too hot at night in those Northern winters.
(as the nights are much longer than the days and black is a more efficient radiator of heat, a white roof would keep your house warmer by reflecting that heat back inward).

“When the glaciers are very rapidly melted by the upswell of a major eruption the water flow equals all the flows of all the major rivers in the world – for a short period of time.”
What is there that is underneath all the major glaciers and that is subject to a major eruption?
Is someone claiming that there is one volcano that extends beneath all high mountains on Earth?
How long is that short period of time? One nanosecond?
    Idiocy upon idiocy.

  22. I enjoyed the video, Elmer. I’m looking forward to your next offering. I still get a thrill out of your “Hide the Decline” (the original) and also loved “I’m a Believer”. Remember, Christmas is coming! How about “Happy XMas! Warm is over” if you could make something of such a sappy song. Of course, the end of warming is bad news for Minnesota, so you probably disagree with the sentiment anyway.

Here’s a Christmas song idea: Mike Mann sings “Santa ‘Cause’ is Coming to Town”
    You better watch out
    You better hide the decline
    Or we’ll make sure
    That your funding’s offline
Santa “Cause” is Coming to Town!
    He’s making a skeptic list
    And checking it twice
Gonna let the climate journal editors know
    Who’s naughty or nice
Santa “Cause” is Coming to Town!
He sees you at “Real Climate”
    He knows your research mistakes
He knows if your paper is bad or good
And it better support AGW for goodness sakes
    Oh, you better watch out
    You better not cry
    If there’s too much CO2
    Then we’re all gonna fry
Santa “Cause” is Coming to Town!

  24. “The Cause” was very much a part of the newspeak in the communist countries. To learn more one should read the Solzhenicin`s book “In the Interest of the Cause”. IT sounds even better in german: “Im Interesse der Sache”.

  25. Speaking of Chicken LIttle; Australia’s ABC News interrupted the evening news bulletin with a religious message from some has-been molester of wildlife; who reckons that the ice is melting at the poles. I changed channels after 2 seconds into the message sponsored by WWF and Greenpeace.
I bought a newish atlas for my niece. I failed to check all the pages before purchase — mea culpa. Caveat emptor. There were several pages of global warming propaganda and how we were destroying the planet. In an atlas for 8 to 12 year-olds.
We’re smothered with the messages everywhere. Even technical reference books e.g. the Bosch book on Diesel-Engine Management says:

Carbon dioxide is a natural component of atmospheric air, and the CO2 contained in automotive exhaust gases is not classified as a pollutant. However, it is one of the substances responsible for the greenhouse effect and the global climate change that this causes. In the period since 1920, atmospheric CO2 has risen continuously, from roughly 300 ppm to approx 450 ppm in the year 2001.

Then there’s a whole page to explain the greenhouse hypothesis, just before the index pages. To be fair, it does say:

While some scientists maintain that anthroprogenic emissions are the primary source of climate change, this theory is challenged by other experts, who believe that the warming of the earth’s atmosphere is being caused by increased solar activity.

    No consensus.

  26. Crosspatch says: “… If you look at the number of square miles of roof space on the planet and were to paint it all while, it would act like ice in reflecting the sun’s rays and could trigger a pretty significant cooling….”
How does the square footage of black asphalt on the earth compare to the square footage of roof tops on the earth? If they are around the same magnitude, then if you claim that painting the roofs white may significantly cool the earth, you now have to assert that all the black pavements around the globe may have already significantly warmed it.

  28. I agree with many of you that this “cause” has nothing to do with science, and everything to do with egocentric and/or political agendas. And yet so many people just sign on because others do. It’s been proven time and again that the data is not conclusive. But the movie…yes, Oliver Stone! A real blockbuster if it simply states the facts…can that be done without propagandizing and still be a money-maker? I hope so!

  29. crosspatch;

In winter climates, all roofs are white in the winter. Its called snow.
