Protesting the person is an ad hominem attack.
Whenever I see such an attack I know the attacker is in the wrong.

How much is M. Mann getting paid for this? THAT might be the real news.

GSA, come on guys we are proud rock lickers who make it possible to develop oil and gas as well as every other mineral mined. Last year it seemed the majority of working stiff geologists and a large portion of university research types were laughing at the Dumb A##35 making their living off trying to convince politicians and MSM that climate has never changed before. Basic sedimtology class as a freshman clues most geology students into the fact that climate changes drastically and repeatedly.
Mann will be a favorite joke over beers at the end of the day.

You guys really think that protesting at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting is going to make people take you seriously? The professional Earth Science community already thinks you’re uneducated bozo’s, and this will confirm their suspicions.
Oh the irony!!
David, when you’ve learnt how to use the apostrophe, then you can come back and lecture others on being uneducated.

Nevertheless, a valid point. Who are you, the R. Gates of grammar and usage?

I’ve grown quite a bitter taste in my mouth for protests. I see their potential use when things are really rotten, but most of the time they just seem like lots of people venting at a brick wall.

It might be better to boycott any media, and their advertised products, that cover any of Mann’s work. Let him die from obscurity.

They are letting someone from the Union of Concerned Scammers speak at a FORMAL conference.
I would guess, they want their credibility to go to ZERO. (Like the number of people with TRUE credentials who are part of the UCS.)

Protest backed by a coherent discernible purpose is IMO perfectly acceptable As Anthony has oft reported in these pages one James Hanson has it down to a science. Unfortunately, that is some of the only science he has a correct and form grasp of.
And, while not an Al Gore worthy arctic blast, today in Mpls, after weeks of well above average clear and sunny 80 degree days, broke cool and with significant rain and even rare fall thunderstorms all day.
I know – weather is not climate – but its fun watching the cool dark clouds follow the warming proponents around 😉

Hey Mr. Mann, I’ve got your back.
[SNIP: OK, but that just might be a bridge too far. -REP]

Just finished the first protest, it was wet but fun. We handed out a few hockey sticks and our signs brought up some good discussions amongst the attendees.
[REPLY: A longer, more detailed report would be much appreciated, if you have the time. Will there be film at 5:00? -REP]

I’m someone who understands punctuation. I’m guessing you’re maybe someone who doesn’t understand irony. Or, indeed, humour (see – English spelling!).

There will be a video, we were going to get interviewed by the local TV but that got rained out.

I read that somebody somewhere saw a Bumper Sticker labeled:
“FRAUD” The number 1 cause of global warming
So good that I had a couple printed for myself and relatives

I think I agree to ignore him. He’s an attention-getter… A media hound. He’s like a spoiled brat that will act up just to get attention, even negative attention. It’ll be even better to ignore him that his little buddies will warn him there will be protests and he shows up and realizes he’s so insignificant no one cared enough to show up and protest.

Is this just a protest against Mann or against the theory that CO2 is causing Global Warming? If it against the latter could someone please point me to some peer reviewed literature that refutes the predictions (no MSNBC, FoxNews, or conservative or liberal think tank data). Also, gravity is only a theory, so why do we continue to accept it? Is this protest more about the possible ramifications and economic consequences of greenhouse gas regulation rather than a deep seated disagreement with climate science?

tbone …. thats the best you can come up with? Here of all places?
How about you share with the class here how the recent temperature rises – over the last 100 or even 400 years – compare to the historical temperature record of the last 12,000 years as evidence by Dome C and other sources?
Perhaps you can explain how this recent rise compares and/or fits into the temp pattern the last 12,000 years?
Lets start with that … and see how you do …

Like there’s a difference.

Since the ramifications and economic consequences are continued iron gripped control of my life by dissolute and incompetent politicians, put me down for both.

I’m aware that many of us do not agree with Dr.Mann’s work, but how would we feel if a protest was organised against Anthony at a speaking engagement? Would we feel dissent was being suppressed? Free speech is critical, the right to protest is critical. If we feel this protest against Dr Mann is OK, we must also support the right of the protesters in Wall street and and protests aimed at ideas we believe in.

Nice strawman. Show me where anyone here has indicated the “occupy” idiots don’t have the right to protest?

A. Scott, could you please cite what research you are using to support your contention that the Dome C ice core shows the recent climate forcing isn’t being affected by CO2. I have not read much on Dome C but the research done by the British Antarctic Survey (www.antarctica.ac.uk) concludes from the ice cores that icreases in climate appear to be linked with increases in co2 with the exception in abrupt changes which could have resulted from changes in deep ocean circulation. If you know of published reasearch that shows the contrary please post it.

tbone, you’re in the wrong place to have a discussion of first principles. This is a thread about Michael Mann and his communication tour. Its important to stay on-topic, otherwise every thread would degrade to discussions of elementary and uninteresting subjects. If you are interested in understand why people mistrust Mann’s work, I suggest you read the Hockey Stick Illusion by Andrew Montford.

No problem. Just trying to have a neutral debate about climat change. Will check out other threads.

For those wearing the polar bear outfits, here’s a photo for your placards.

Yes, clearly a picture of… a white blob which may or may not be a polar bear, which may or may not be dead, in the middle of what may or may not be the ocean. In other words, the usual non-information we’ve come to expect from climate alarmists.

tbone: “but the research done by the British Antarctic Survey (www.antarctica.ac.uk) concludes from the ice cores that icreases in climate”
An increase in climate? What is that, exactly?
Do we have more climate today than yesterday??

For those planning such a protest, check to see if the esteemed Dr. James Hansen of NASA-GISS will be attending. If so, bring along a large bucket of coal. He’ll see it and get himself arrested out of habit.
