Quote of the Week – Total Ecplise of the Moonbat

Dr. Richard North of the EU Referendum has few words for George Monbiot regarding his recent claim that cold snowy winters are the result of “global warming”.

North writes:

It is not that he does not have a case (even if it is not very good). What makes him so deservedly look the fool it that he, alongside the climate establishment, has spent the last decade or more trying to convince us that milder winters are a sure sign of global warming. Now, in the manner of Winston Smith, Moonbat seems to believe that he can rewrite history and we will not notice.

Reader, please give Dr. North a traffic surge, as his article is a well researched and well written skewering.

Like I’ve been telling you at Steven Goddard’s website, you need to get your own blog. Then you don’t have to keep trying to make everyone talk like you want them to talk so that you can see what you’d like to see. Believe it or not, there’s people who don’t agree with you, not because they are stupid, or blind, but because they’ve looked into the situation for themselves and seen it’s errors.
Again, it’s not because they are stupid. I’ll leave it written like that—though you might not agree with it.
REPLY: Yes, I second that, get your own blog where you can blog away and argue with yourself in toto – Anthony

Antarctica is likely to be the world’s only habitable continent by the end of this century if global warming remains unchecked, the Government’s chief scientist, Professor Sir David King, said last week……….He said the Earth was entering the “first hot period” for 60 million years, when there was no ice on the planet and “the rest of the globe could not sustain human life”.

This is the same moonbat who in 1999 wrote:
“Global warming means that flying across the Atlantic is now as unacceptable as child abuse.”

A few years later he also said that most aircraft should be grounded. This was followed by a book signing tour in Canada. Now he is preparing for another tour this time in the States. The hypocrisy of these people knows no bounds. Gore, Prince Charles, Hollywood celebs, the list is endless.

By the way in the Guardian piece by Monbiot there are now over 1,300 comments and rising! He obviously rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. The sceptics are basically poking fun at his 2 positions, previous statements from himself and AGWers, pointing him to Anthony’s destruction of his article etc.

I would go much further than North’s statement “It is not that he does not have a case (even if it is not very good).” Monbiot’s case (that the lack of Arctic Ice results in cold winters for north-west Europe) does not stand up to any scrutiny what-so-ever. From looking at http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/seaice/extent/AMSRE_Sea_Ice_Extent.png, there is very little variation in the sea ice area in the winter months, which presumably would (if Monbiot’s half-baked conjecture had any merit) be the months which would determine how cold the winters got in London & Paris etc. The severe cold that the northern hemisphere (except for east Greenland & western Canada e.g. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/12/19/greenland-blows-hot-and-cold-while-europe-freezes/) has seen in the last 3 winters, is evidently a result of the jet stream blocking and the AO going negative, and nothing to do with relatively minor changes to sea-ice coverage. If there was a relationship, then it would be reasonable to expect that the sea ice levels were much higher than normal during the late 1990s and early 2000s, when we did have a run of milder than average winters in north-west Europe. (And if he is suggesting that it is lack of summer ice, why was winter 2007-08 so mild?) Also there is good historical evidence that the NAO/AO reversal and jet stream blocking has occurred regularly in the past, long before industrialisation and anthropogenic CO2 emissions became significant:
“In Greenland, all winters are severe, yet they are not alike.
The Danes have noticed that when the winter in Denmark was severe, as we perceive it, the winter in Greenland in its manner was mild, and conversely”. This statement (translated from Danish) was noted in the diary of Hans Egede Saabye, who was the Danish missionary in Greenland in the 1770s. [/i] [ Source: http://iopscience.iop.org/1755-1315/8/1/012012/pdf/ees9_8_012012.pdf ]
Monbiot and his merry band of deluded CO2 doomsayers are clutching at straws with this latest warm=cold meme, and I doubt that even the predominantly gullible journalists in the MSM will fall for it.

I looked at the IPCC Apolyctic Revelation 4 to see if I could find the references to the severe winters we could expect with global warming. This is what I found:
Fewer cold outbreaks; fewer, shorter, less intense cold spells / cold extremes in winter
VL (consistent across model projections)
Northern Europe, South Asia, East Asia17
17 §11.3.3.2, PRUDENCE, Kjellström et al. (2007), §11.4.3.2, Gao et al. (2002), Rupa Kumar et al. (2006)
No equivocation, no doubts, winters were going to be warmer, and severe cold weather events shorter and rarer in Northern Europe. No mention of the severely cold weather that would result from global warming.
George Monbiot isn’t a scientist, he’s an environmentalist, who like all environmentalists, believes that humans are basically unwelcome on the planet. He has pushed the global warming meme for years now without a hint of the extreme cold weather we could expect from it, but his, and the other environmenatlists’ desperation at Mother Nature’s punishment of them for their hubris has pushed them into a desperate “black is white” meme.

Well researched and well written, you say? A pathetic and vitriolic rant, more like. If this is the standard for discussions at this blog, good luck with that.”

Sense seeker, you should keep searching for that sense because to admit to not reading an article and then claim it is a “pathetic and vitriolic rant” is not very sensible. How could you possibly know from the first sentence what the rest of the article was like? You made a prejudiced assumption and then showed everyone else how prejudiced and short-sighted you are by posting your senseless vitriol here for everyone to witness.
If you had bothered to take off your tribalist glasses and open your mind, you would have read an article that cleverly records numerous examples over the last decade where climate alarmists have confidently stated that global warming will mean warmer, wetter or drier winters, and that we would almost never see cold frozen winters at all. In fact they have been stating more and more recently as the Arctic ice receded over this past decade’s winters, that global warming may not make our summers much warmer, but winters would be a LOT warmer. This is why records for heat are being beaten by a degree or two in warm places, but up to 15 degrees in cold places. This appears to support those claims. (Ignoring the problems with the extreme UHI in arctic regions with thermometers located at airports which are 10 degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside, of course)
This article seeks to show how climate alarmists are trying to argue both sides of the argument at once, contradicting themselves in such a blatant way as to now make them appear ludicrous.

I do have some sympathies with this. While I find George Monbiot frustrating in his apparent inability to see both sides of a debate, to call his newspaper “loathsome” just indicates an underlying prejudice every bit as bad. I also have a lot of doubt about how biased newspapers, such as the Daily Mail, Guardian and Telegraph can can ever contribute to the debate with their stories written to appeal to their readers, though it is great fun to see them fall flat on their faces. I’ve seen George Monbiot speak, sometime I disagree with him, sometimes not,( especially on climate issues!) but in each case he is a very good speaker. I don’t always agree with the postings on this site, but I find them thought provoking and worth reading. If anyone described our site and postings as “loathsome” it would tell me much more about that person than anything they had to say regarding the climate debate and I would spring to our defence. Hopefully we in turn don’t need to use such language to support our argument which is based on evidence, not bias and loud voices and insulting terminology.

True Jimbo, this is appalling journalism, however what is reassuring is the quality of some of the responses, hopefully George read some of them. The Guardian does not usually allow debate on the climate preferring to focus on the promotion of AGW so seeing alternate viewpoints is at least a step in the right direction.

Most western countries suffer the presence of people such as this moonbat man.
They share one thing in common apart from wrongness and stupidity and that is they have no shame.
In days of yore, people such as this were placed in stocks in the village square. No toilet breaks and villagers hurling abuse and over ripe fruit and veg, tends to give one a fast education into the meaning of shame.
Perhaps Boris of London could be persuaded to set up stocks in a prominent place with a large screen board suggesting whom should occupy the stocks. This would be a modern equivalent of shaming .

I wondered, here we have Dr Richard North and Piers Corbyn, a couple of old guys with laptops making a better fist of understanding things than all the vaunted overpaid stars of the MSM and the government sponsored bureaucracies on which they feed. Add to that list other notables in the bogosphere (Anthony et al) and well, there might still be hope for mankind when the time comes to rebuild a world ruined by idiots.

– Tonight in Kristianstad, Sweden, temperaratures as low as minus 24.6 degrees C, was measured. This is the lowest temperature since 1942 and the lowest ever in December since measuring began in 1878, says Elin Torstensson, meteorologist at SMHI.

The AGW scare is still on here in Norway. Its just like back in 1991 when the Berlin Wall fell. All the socialists run for cover. Then over the years they came back into the light again. Slowly, one by one.
Now they are at it like never before. DDR is forgotten.
Climategate made some of them silent. For a while. The only thing that can keep them in check is colder winthers. So lets hope for more of it. Only, it is MINUS 20 Degrees Celsius outside here now.
Brrrr. There is either thousands of AGW loonies, or big freeze. What a situation.

If the Grauniad was a person he would be loathsome and that would be a fair desciption. It isn’t just Moonbat that has been vitriolic in his writing but most of their other reporters as well. The Grauniad has been failing for a very long time and has been struggling to maintain it’s circulation figures. So loathsome may not be pleasant but it is accurate.
senseseeker like R gates are so embroiled in and devoted to their religion that, as it begins to fail, they feel like they are loosing their raison-être. Sense Seeker and George Monbiot,
Would like to describe the mechansim how AGW causes cold winters?
I not holding my breath.
If you both decide to use science, the cold winters and hot summers have been caused by the change in the jet stream. The so called consensus was that global warming had caused the jet stream to move north causing warmer summers and winters. Over recent years the jet stream has moved further south and become less flat, with a increasingly quieting sun and increased albedo. (clouds-reducing SWR to the surface)
This recent change has nothing to do with the gas CO2 because it can’t cause both different phases. This also increases evidence that the jet moving north during previous global warming period also had nothing to do with CO2 either. (ie it was driven by something else)
Finally, increasing the energy content doesn’t make it colder only warmer, changing weather patterns with the jet stream can make it locally warmer or colder. When this starts occuring on a regular basis this becomes climate. What we are witnessing here is the start of a global cool down with recent years only hiding this because there has been more El Ninos then La Ninas. The tiny underlying effect from CO2 will have little influence and will be over driven by natural climate change. (observed by the very planet itself)
