Patchy refuses to resign, intends to complete next IPPC report

From the BBC’s Richard Black:

And the train keeps on chugging along…

But while some figures outside the IPCC have called for Dr Pachauri’s head, government delegates here supported him continuing in post.

“I not only have the mandate to oversee the completion of AR5, but having been one of the two parties that requested a review by the IAC (the other being the UN), I now also have a commitment to oversee the implentation of the reforms that have come out of the review process.

“So I have every intention of staying right until I have completed the mission I accepted voluntarily to carry out, namely the conclusion of AR5 in 2014.”

– Rajenda Pachauri

….

The revised guidance emphasises that in future, authors must assess both the quality of research available and uncertainties within that research.

It urges authors to be careful of “group-think”, but maintains that it “may be appropriate to describe findings for which the evidence and understanding are overwhelming as statements of fact without using uncertainty qualifiers”.

Enhanced guidance on the use of “grey literature” – material not published in peer-reviewed scientific journals – has also been drawn up, and will be finalised by chairs of the IPCC’s working groups in the coming months.

Pachauri pressured to resign? Nah. No Pressure.
Can there be any other person more qualified to drive the (C)AGW train over the cliff?

Some more details of the story as it developed

It’s also interesting to take a look at the written “responses” from various delegations to the IAC. It’s quite clear that some actually read the IAC report (understood and gave some thought to) the recommendations – while others either didn’t read or just don’t get it!
Of all the responses, though, perhaps the most signs of things (not) to come probably lie in the “comments”/responses “Submitted by the IPCC Chair on behalf of the E-team”.
http://www.ipcc.ch/meetings/session32/inf06_review_of_IPCC_Processes_Procedures_IAC_Report_eteam.pdf
It’s most unfortunate that the delegations did not have an opportunity to view the recent research from Donna Laframboise regarding the “train wrecks” inherent in AR4’s chapter on “species extinction”
http://nofrakkingconsensus.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/another-ipcc-train-wreck-species-extinction-part-1/
The notorious (and nurtured by Nature, of course) “Thomas” report (on which much of the chapter was based) could well be considered as WG II’s Mann & his “hockey stick” equivalent.
Another highlight (from my reading of Donna’s work) is the fact that of the 10 lead authors, 5 have links to the WWF (along with 3 of the contributing authors).

Wow – this is really bad news for the IPCC.

Not really. If you take the stink out of a skunk, it no longer stinks, but then it is no longer a skunk either.

Everday he stays is another day of reducing the credibility of the AGW movement by simply exposing it for what it is.

And if the unmitigated, undiluted, extreme rubbish that flowed out of the sewers of NASA GISS about CO2 being the primary and most powerful driver of climate change is anything to go by, the AR5 is going to be the most alarmist and extreme report yet, calling on policy makers to make drastic measures amounting to returning the Western nations to a technological equivalent of the Stone Age.
Well, all I can say is, the more extreme the better, as nothing will wake the public up more than when Governments start forcefully taking their cars from them.

I disagree. He should stay in office and complete his mandate. His efforts will have sufficiently discredited any reports produced to render them useless. We all need a bit of humor in our lives and he is providing that. I think this situation should be milked for what ever it has by skeptic; since that is exactly what Pachauri is doing milking it for his own personal gain. Side benefit of him staying on, he is drawing the fire others can breath easier.

Ah, that’s just one of those “odd statistical coincidences” that leads people to imagine questionable motives. Like I have heard said, it’s not that the media has a liberal bias, it’s just that those of a liberal bent are more likely to pursue journalism. Those who are certain Mother Earth is in obvious danger from mankind are more likely than not to be those working with the WWF, the IPCC reports are about detailing an obvious danger to Mother Earth from mankind, those working on the IPCC reports are more likely than not to be those who are certain Mother Earth is in obvious danger from mankind who are also those more likely than not to be those working with the WWF.
Nope, no “conspiracies” here, nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing to see here, move along people…

Even with public faith in the IPCC and AGW continuing to drop well below half of the people in the west, Pachy and friends see their problem as one of communication.
Public confidence, once lost, is rarely recovered. In the case of the IPCC, a lot influential people read the CRU emails, and many more have read the Bishop’s HSI or the CRUtape Letters. These have devastated public trust in anything coming out of the mouths of any person or organization central to the the facts, including Pachy and the IPCC.
Pachendra is the perfect poison to ensure the death of the IPCC. I welcome his decision to remain as head through 2014. I sincerely hope that Mr. Ban Ki-Moon of the UN does not read WUWT.

Considering how much the members control the peer review itself, as discovered during climategate, is this a case of going worse to bad? Still… an improvement

Pachy may still be in control of the IPCC, but it appears that William Connelley (the weasel known as stoat) has been banned by Wikipedia (story at the Bishop’s Blog).
