WUWT's story on 10:10 – 3rd most popular on WordPress globally – even in New Zealand

People are really ticked off about this 10:10 video, and it isn’t abating. The story is making it’s way up the news food chain. Hits are increasing on it. This afternoon, this WUWT story reached #3 on WordPress.

Not too shabby when wordpress.com says this:

The best of 341,031 bloggers, 1,527,765 new posts, 362,603 comments, & 210,061,304 words today on WordPress.com.

But there’s a fun twist in the stats, read on.

I had to laugh though, because even though traffic is soaring through the roof today, I find that I’ve been given a new nickname by a blogger in New Zealand who thinks the vile gore-packed short film of exploding skeptical children is “funny”. He goes on to say in comments:

click for original thread

Wow.

Mr. Gareth Renowden, founder of what is supposed to be the leading site on global warming in New Zealand, “Hot Topic” thinks it’s all about failure to have a “sense of humor”. Perhaps this is what truffle growers turned AGW proponent might think…

His public Twitter profile

…but based on traffic and the sampling of opinions posted, it surely isn’t what the rest of the world thinks.

But, back to the nickname.

Gareth has coined a new one for me. It’s funny. He included it in his update on the pulling of the 10:10 video. Since he couldn’t easily explain away the 10:10 epic video gaffe being pulled, he gets personal:

“microwatts” Heh. Hey, I’ve been called far worse by Romm and Dhogaza. No worries.

For the record, I took no position on the Delingpole statement he cites, and I pointed out that because of the discovery that Delingpole made, which was important, it was a “damned if I do damned if I don’t” situation in reporting it.

click for original thread

Of course, Gareth misses the entire story about Bilderberg and global cooling being discussed because it does not fit into his narrative.

But here’s the really funny part. Until yesterday, when I got a linkback from Hot Topic because of his “unbelievably vile” snark, I had never visited the site.

Today I found out why. For the “leading site on global warming in New Zealand” it’s pretty much off the radar.

Alexa.com provides some valuable insight, here’s Hot Topic’s Worldwide Traffic Rank in New Zealand: (details on Alexa stats here)

click for details (lower number is better)

And here is WUWT’s Worldwide Traffic Rank in in New Zealand:

click for details (lower number is better)

Yes, that’s right, by a factor of 7.6, WUWT is reaching more people in New Zealand than the “leading site on global warming in New Zealand”. Perhaps if some of my New Zealand readers can spread the word around a bit, we can break the 1000 mark and make it a factor of 10. Wouldn’t that be fun?

The other number of interest between Hot Topic and WUWT is the global and US overall rankings:

Hot Topic:

Global-left, USA-right (lower number is better)

WUWT:

Global-left, USA-right (lower number is better)

Compared:

WUWT and Hot Topic worldwide reach compared (higher number is better)

So please Mr. Renowden, feel free to continue to call me names in lieu of actual content. I like the results of that, and apparently New Zealanders do too.

The irony is that by giving him attention here you have increased his ranking by those of us that are curious about his site, making it harder for you to reach 10x more readers.

“Don’t be worried about NZ, Anthony. When numbers are down, they poll the sheep,”
Of course on this side of the Tasman the joke is that it’s the Aussies that are into sheep polling.
You’re right about the popularity of your site with us Kiwi’s Anthony, I always seem to be tripping over the buggers when I come here.

It would be interesting to see a poll of the readers on “left” vs “right”. Also on “darwinism” vs “creationism”.
I know what you mean by undesirable right-wing types, like KKK groups. But I also have experienced the reaction to left vs right thinking from readers of the blog. IMO its a can of worms, and political standpoint has nothing to do with the issues that are the focus of the blog. There is a reason Anthony only opened for political comments once (to my memory).

As a generally liberal, left-leaning, libertarian type, I resent being lumped with all manner of undesirable right-wing types

The AGW fanatics have considered their cause so serious that they have never considered it a subject fit for humour. Their video was meant to shock, and this they have achieved, but not in the way expected. If now they are accusing their critics of lacking humour, all it shows, is that like Jihadis, they are bereft of any ideas outside their inner world.

thanks for the link. Very good indeed!

at first I thought like you, but having already stumbled upon THAT site once before there is no way I will be going back. IT is a great example of the worst type of self-serving blog site purporting to cater to the discussion on climate science. The usual ad hominem attacks and intolerance to any counter views that can be found at other CAGW sites are all there.

I bet he is a civil person down at the market. Most people wouldn’t put up with his rantings, and snide remarks in public. He saves his Mr Hyde routine for the blogosphere.
More MegaWatts Anthony! Warp Factor 10 if you please. Damn those pesky torpedoes, full steam ahead!! (apologies to Admiral Farragut & Capt. Kirk).
Cheers

In the style of Dr Zeuss…
Around the land,
the kiwi’s cry,
Watts Up With That?,
in the sky,
Watts Up With That?,
down on the plain,
Watts Up With That?,
there and back again.
The Blogsphere,
resounds with clamour,
the green fiasco,
has lost its glamour,
the trees they breathe,
the cee-oh-two,
lucky for me,
lucky for you.
Watts Up With That?,
Its easy friend!
That swell fellow Anthony,
is at it again,
Watts Up With That?,
The kiwi’s cry,
the warmista’s are now
eating humble pie.
Keep it up Sir, although Kiwi’s love a good fantasy trilogy, Envirofraud, Ecofraud and Greenwash aren’t among them.

10:10 No Pressure a UK taxpayer funded pro climate change propoganda snuff film written by Richard Curtis and directed by Douglas Wilson

Text of apology by 10:10 team, so arrogant.
Sorry
We missed the mark with today’s ‘No Pressure’ video, and have removed it from our website
1 Oct 10
Today we put up a mini-movie about 10:10 and climate change called ‘No Pressure’.
With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media, we wanted to find a way to bring this critical issue back into the headlines whilst making people laugh. We were therefore delighted when Britain’s leading comedy writer, Richard Curtis – writer of Blackadder, Four Weddings, Notting Hill and many others – agreed to write a short film for the 10:10 campaign. Many people found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn’t and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended.
As a result of these concerns we’ve taken it off our website. We won’t be making any attempt to censor or remove other versions currently in circulation on the internet.
We’d like to thank the 50+ film professionals and 40+ actors and extras and who gave their time and equipment to the film for free. We greatly value your contributions and the tremendous enthusiasm and professionalism you brought to the project.
At 10:10 we’re all about trying new and creative ways of getting people to take action on climate change. Unfortunately in this instance we missed the mark. Oh well, we live and learn.
Onwards and upwards,
Franny, Lizzie, Eugenie and the whole 10:10 team

I have not watched this video, but the impression I am getting from these comments disturbs me for a very particular reason:
The point of an education is to teach our children to think for themselves. Our schools are not supposed to be producing mindless drones that only parrot back what they are told. Yet, this is exactly what the producers of this film seem to be extolling — Do not think for yourself / Thinking is dangerous. It is a very Orwellian message that deserves all the scorn being heaped upon it.

October 5, 2010 3:56 am

Steele adds a note:
“Note: I understand that I have invoked Godwin’s Law of Reductio ad Hitlerum, but I believe it is absolutely justified by the video in question.”
Either Godwin’s Law does not apply in Global Warming discussions, or the warmist side lost years ago when they started using the term “denier.”
Or possibly both…
