People are seen on the beach covered by snow in Nice, southeastern France, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009. Temperature is 3 degrees celcius (37,2 Farenheit).

(AP Photo/Lionel Cironneau)
Seems that they don’t get snow days there very often. While I don’t have a full report yet, it seems likely that this may be the first recorded snow for this date. ClimateZone has this summary:
click to see original report from ClimateZone.com

The above report is only short term, 8 years according tot he website, I’m writing this entry froma  Starbucks while traveling so perhaps our readers can find a longer term snow record for Nice, France.

CNN’s  ireport seems a bit incredulous with this headline. The video provided is interesting.

Snow on the French Riviera????

I am an American Expat living in Antibes (Nice) France. I live 5 blocks from the beach, and 3 blocks from Port Vabaun, the 2nd largest yacht port in the world. I thought living here, I would escape the ice and snow of my native Cincinnati, Ohio. Boy was I wrong!!!

Once upon a time, such unusual weather events were just that — an unusual weather event. Now, how many True Believers will point to this unusual weather event and call it further proof of global warming?
And they wonder why they have a credibility problem with normal people whose feet are planted firmly on the ground.

Snow is snowing! Wind is blowing! It’s cold and horrible! Someone alert the media!
Wait!
You don’t need to see the snow … These aren’t the pictures you’re looking for … Move along.

This will presumably have an impact on mean temperature for the year (Record warming?).

Hi guys,
I am a regular reader of this site and I live 60 miles from Nice, on the edge of the Alps at 3000ft. Last winter we had heaps of snow and very cold, the snow stayed around in the gullies til mid June (longer than any locals could remember). Same start to this winter and the skiing is great.
Merry Christmas one and all.

And once again it is proven that global warming is not happening. Jolly good!

Any pictures of sad greenies roaming the streets of “It’s Just a Big Hoax and No Deal in – hagen”, anyone?
No breaking news on sad protesters? How dissapointing is that!
All that travelling and protesting and freezin’ one’s but off and nothing to show for it when they came home to their pety little grey lives.
Not even a T-shirt stating “I was there and no one cared !” ?

OT:
On my daily commute to work by motorbike in freezing weather, I noticed a while back that my body becomes hyper sensitive to a change in temperature.
When passing a row of about a dozen well insulated houses on an otherwise empty country lane, I can feel a distinct warming, which is quite pleasant for the few seconds it lasts.
I think the heat island effect does not need very much urbanisation at all to make a difference to recorded temps.

AP-Seychelles bans Al Gore from visiting islands
In a sudden announcement, the Chairman of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, informed the gathered press corps that, after consulting Vice-President Joseph Belmont (cabinet member in charge of Tourism), Minister of Foreign Affairs Patrick Pillay, and President James Alix Michel, he had informed the American authorities that US ex-Vicepresident Al Gore was “persona-non-grata” in the islands. In a hastily arranged press conference, Mr Loustau-Lalanne said that “[I]n view of the recent events in Copenhagen and Nice, we have to protect our tourism industry from this roving catastrophe.” The Republic of Seychelles is heavily dependent on its tourist sector, which employs almost 30% of its workforce and brings most of its hard currency earnings. Mr Loustau-Lalanne added that “Mr Gore is well-loved in our islands for his constant fight to allow us to further tap Western largesse through his Climate Change policies, but at this juncture, after the failure of the COP15 and the uncertainty of future financial support, a sudden snowfall in our beautiful islands would ruin the tourist season.” Former US Vice-president Al Gore could not be reached for comments, though unnamed sources informed he had been granted an entry visa to Switzerland, a country which has been experiencing an atypically dry autumn.

I’m in the LImousin, south central France. The temperature at 09:30 this morning (CET) was minus 10.6 degrees. We have about 20 cm of level, frozen snow, for the third day running.
I’ve lived here three years, and this has been the coldest and snowiest in that time, and it’s not even Christmas yet!

Our World Lie-ders only needed to put a cap on the freezing point of water, then we wouldn’t have all this snow everywhere…
Also, If they raised the cap, all the melting would reverse.

I used to live near Montpellier which is just along (and a bit south) on the same coast, and snow was pretty much unheard of. We lived in the mountains and used to go there to warm up in the winter.
The giveaway, I am told, is palm trees. If they thrive, the chances are it never freezes as they don’t normally survive a freeze.

Robert Felix of IceAgeNow thinks that some of these mega snow-storms are the result of warmer oceans being heated by incredible amounts of underwater volcanic activity.
http://www.iceagenow.com/Underwater_volcanoes_heat_the_seas.htm
The U.S has seen two mega storms so far, the one earlier in December and the one slamming D.C. and Winter is technically still 2 days away from starting.
Also, Intellicast is showing an incredible cold pool set to develop over Siberia and NOAA is showing the AO index off the bottom of the chart and may stay that way almost to January.
Mark Vogen is also predicting major cold starting at the close of December as well, this makes me hope Wichita gets off the cold easy but still get a nice bunch of snow.
