The hits just keep on coming. 1,672,437 page views this month, up from 1,478,801 page views in March.
After posting last months stats, there was some discontent by some angry and somewhat incredulous bloggers that it might be an April Fools joke of some sorts. Sorry, no such luck.
But what was humorous, was one particular blogger (Joe Romm) who said:
It is absurd to publish one’s page views to 7 significant digits without caveats — even 2 is stretching it.
I got a huge chuckle out of that. So just to show that the stats are indeed real, and accurate down to that 7th digit (since they come from the WordPress internal traffic counter), I’m expanding this month’s report.
Joe, this report’s for you. Here is a screencap showing my WordPress internal report page, with all 7 digits, sans caveats. No caveats are needed since the WordPress numbers are actual, not estimated, and not drawn from router statistics.
Maybe Joe will reciprocate and post a screencap his own internal stats page.
The graph on this page above differs a bit from the headline graph (which is graphically edited to move the title inwards and downwards to fit nicely on the page) because it was snapped after 00GMT (5PM PST) and it shows the new month of May stats also, which are of course quite low by comparison.
So the numbers are real, from WordPress.com (where my blog is hosted) and exact to the 7th digit, despite angry accusations otherwise.
In that blog post, Joe Romm also showed an Alexa graph to prove his point, saying:
Interestingly, there is one independent source that suggests Watts’ page views and mine are in fact the same (and hence possibly around 1.4 million). If you go to the Web traffic ranking and comparison site Alexa, go to page views, and type in wattsupwiththat.com, you’ll get this graph:
So at best I am just negating the disinformation Watts is spreading. Sigh. And lest there be any doubt, WattsUpWithThat is in fact an extremist anti-scientific denialist website, as his recent posts make clear.
Gosh, all that angry prose from a traffic report? I don’t much care whether WUWT beats Climate Progress in traffic or vice versa, but I do care when the proprietor suggests that by printing my own internal stats page I’m spreading disinformation. Of course, I don’t expect an apology, but I wanted WUWT readers to know.
OK, following Joe’s lead, lets look at Alexa this month.
Pageviews: we are still about the same in April according to Alexa.
Though over the longer 6 month term, WUWT is slow and steady while Climate Progress runs hot and cold.
Joe didn’t show the other interesting comparative statistics from Alexa though, so I thought WUWT readers might enjoy seeing them.

Some people might wonder why I post my web stats each month. Some might say I’m tooting my own horn, well maybe a bit, I’m admittedly proud of WUWT.
But there’s a bigger reason. WUWT has thousands of visitors, many of whom are regulars who see this blog as something they relate to and grow with. Many visit daily or even more often. There’s a sense of pride and ownership with all of you, too. Without its readers, content contributors, and those tireless volunteer moderators that keep the snark under control, WUWT would be nothing. I try not to lose sight of that. This is my monthly reminder to myself that this is a team effort.
As this blog expands its reach, it seems only fair that my readers also get to share in seeing the growth. I listen to my readers, who are often more insightful than I am, and they offer wonderful suggestions and topics.
I thank you all for making WUWT one of top science blogs on the Internet today.
And thanks to you to Joe, for bringing up this topic last month.

You seem like a great guy. I found WUWT from a link on Instapundit last June and now visit several times daily to look for new posts and to read comments. I’m a non-scientist (small business owner) and I cannot believe how much I have learned from this site. I also enjoy the increasing presence of Steven G.
Based on WUWT tripling hits since April 2008 at an increasing rate, I predict a 6x increase for the next 12 months and 10,000,000 hits for April 2010! That should mean at least a 20x increase in slanderous comments from the Joe Romms of the warmist world. Hey, maybe even Gore or Hansen will slam Anthony or the blog by name in the next year 🙂
I don’t understand the charts. Percent of what? And why is the Alexa Traffic Rank ordinate inverted? And have you noticed that climate progress’s Reach graph follows a sine curve closely matching the motions of the solar barycenter as influenced by the planet Treblo? I am just a regular guy who wishes he had done better in school. We all have a civic duty to understand the issues that effect us – especially Climate Change! WUWT is a great source of information.
In this field, it is essential to be able to prove any “statistic”; great work.
And while the refineries are down for maintenance, they’ll have to be refitted with some CO2 removers. May take awhile. Might keep one going for in state gasoline use tho.
Anthony, this is the greatest community, the science topics continue to expand, the debate and discussion deepens, and your team of volunteers are amazing. Congratulations and much appreciation to all. Climate science might become science again to a very large population of curious and contented readers.

I seriously wonder why people like Joe Romm think that skepticism is harmful to science. To me it’s the opposite, blind, unquestioning belief in a scientific theory or hypothesis undermines any scientific value it might have had.

So Romm calls this an “anti-scientific” website? His debate with Morano was just that–anti-scientific. I don’t remember him citing scientific studies in any of his arguments. All they contained was alarmist hogwash sprinkled with ad hominem attacks.
Congrats; it’s a great site, though the comment threads are so darned long (and interesting!) that I don’t have time to read through them all.
One nit to pick: I know that it would be impossible to police the comments for grammatical infelicities, but the top posts could all use more editing, specifically for the all-too-common confusion of:
its = the possessive of it;
it’s = contraction of ‘it is’.
Not to mention your/you’re, their/they’re, to/too/two, etc., and the chronic use of ‘s for plurals.
After all, no reason for scientists, engineers, and technical folk to give the appearance of being illiterate boobs; it just gives ammunition to the opposition who say, “It’s only a blog; it’s not peer-reviewed.”

I have a theory for the sinusoid increases and decreases in its hits. Maybe I am wrong, but speculation is free:
It is given as a link in courses.
Since main stream academia is in the box of AGW this site will not be in the curricula. Courses give periodic assignments and that is what makes for the large swings in readership.
I am basing this on some very modest statistics I have on a private web page on links that are relatable to courses. Hits fall during vacations and summer.

When history books are written about the folly of human’s preparing for a period rapid and drastic warming, as we entered a period of (potentially rapid and drastic) cooling, they will reference WUWT as one of the primary factors in preventing the folly from going too far.
I dare say that the tide has begun to turn, and WUWT is one of the primary reasons for it.

They often write about the place where the counter-revolution was planned. And WUWT may also be referenced as an example of how alternate media began to override mainstream media as the place where people go to get their facts. The mainstream media has become the place where people go to be entertained.

The comment that this site is ‘anti-scientific’ is the very opposite of what it actually is.
What a breath of fresh air that such a site can produce so much detailed information and opinion in so short a time.
I know it is time consuming to follow a thread to the end but it is often worth it as thoughts and ideas are digested and some of the best comments are at the end.

I have long held a theory that I am an extremist anti-scientific denialist, but I can’t seem to find any independently verifiable, empirical evidence that I am. Consequently after conducting a double-blind study to ensure that my assessment was not inadvertantly biased, I have to conclude that my theory has indeed been falsified.
Unfortunately, I have not yet published my finding in the peer reviewed literature – so I can’t claim it to be “authoritive”.

I offer a different (perhaps better?) term for the host/ moderators/ commenters*/ contributors on WUWT, compared to that offered by Mr. Romm:

A KCR is not taken in by bad science, or by unsupportable conjecture, but examines the claims and projections against factual, observable events. Thus, when the warmists claim that rising CO2 causes the atmosphere and the oceans to heat up, a KCR looks at the record. The record clearly shows that the atmosphere sometimes heats up, but many times remains the same, and many times cools down, all while CO2 rises. At that point, a KCR begins to doubt the warmists.”
* – with the caveat that a few of the commenters are definitely NOT KCR’s, but warmists.
I was directed to this website by realclimate. I posted a comment on there pointing out that there was no conclusive scientific proof of global warming. I was predictably abused and told I should go back to WUWT where I belonged. I’d never heard of you, but paid a visit and now I’m an addict. Thanks Gavin.
Two more things:
1. This curve is in lock step with the recent global cooling.
2. Climateaudit should be sent the data and methodologies that produced this curve so they can do a detailed peer review, otherwise you will have realclimate telling the world it’s only an aberration and they had been predicting it, but expect it to take a downward swing in 30 years time.

Can your statistics differentiate “unique hits” vs. “repeat visits”? I would suggest that a high repeat-visit count would indicate the level people found the site of value….
Reply: 3% of our users qualify as addicts, accounting for 49% of visits. “Regulars”, users who come by at least once a month, account for an additional 40%. The last 11% are passers by.~ charles the troll moderator who in his off-hours is AKA jeez
I have devised a computer model to model the rise in extremist anti-scientific denialism.
In accordance with some well know authorities on the subject, the model assumes that such a rise is directly coupled with hits on the famous http://wattsupwiththat.com/ site.
After 100 individual runs of the model, in which an ever increasing rise in hits on the famous http://wattsupwiththat.com/ site, it was found that the initial assumption was in fact “true” each and every time. The fact that all my computer model runs agree with the initial assumed premise have convinced me that the assumption is in fact correct.
The use of such self-referential logic is very much esteemed by the successful practioners of climate modelling, and I would happily recommend it to anyone who is interested in proving their assumptions to be correct.

Unscientifically based on how darned cold it’s been at my house the last couple years and the fact that my garden just doesn’t grow like it used to for lack of sunshine, I think I’m rapidly moving beyond skeptic to denialist…..
BTW, merchandising is only tawdry when you have obnoxious neon ads flashing distractingly and you constantly push your wares to the detriment of the rest of your site. A nice, discreet button that links to a site where we could by a product if we choose to do so, would be fine IMHO.

I’m very glad that 1) you created and maintain WUWT, and 2) that I found it early on. I’ve sent innumerable people here, and visit several times a day to keep up. The other day I noticed the owner of my company was browsing around, too, which made me smile.
Personally I’ve cut my commenting back a bit lately since, well, there are others with more important contributions. Also I tend to be very impatient with stupid people. Although I’ve never been “snipped”, I’ve had my fingers slapped a few times so… yeah, I keep that tendency under control.
As others have said, the atmosphere here is polite and pleasant, and that IS because of the moderating. I have little doubt that is the reason people come back and bring their friends. There is much to learn and so little of importance in the mainstream media (who CARES what Tom Cruise is doing???) Even some of the throwaway comments I see on WUWT lead me in directions I never would have gone before… the other day someone posted something about the reservoir in the Ozarks that failed, and I (wasted) spent over an hour reading up on it and studying the pictures.
I don’t know what planet some of the rabid AGW people are living on, but here on Earth this site represents Science. I must have missed the day in school where Science was defined as steadfastly standing by a failed and disproved hypothesis. Every day that you don’t learn something new is a wasted day.
I’d love to take all the credit for the traffic as I have a link on my own web-page.
But I have only had 2000 hits in 18 months,…. drat.
Anthony, don’t overlook the multiplier effect of the number of discussions resulting from your hits score.

The idea seems to help explain some other geographical places and may also figure with WUWT
Reasons for visiting this blog:
1. Uncensored contributions, provided that threats or foul language are not used.
2. Responsiveness to user interest and queries.
3. Independence from IPCC/Govt mantras.
4. Links to other sources.
5. Specific data to address specific claims/counter claims.
6. Global contributions.
Clearly if you only read the Guardian or were an unreconstructed member of the Labour Party, you’d be taking anti-hysteria pills to keep you calm in the face of imminent armageddon. Or you should be. Or you should be relocating you and your kids to at least 200m above sea level…..and slightly further north, as clearly deserts are going to form as far north as Southern England within a short period of time……..
Mercifully I am a member of neither of those interest groups, so I visit this site, amongst others, and hold a healthy scepticism about what I am told. Because in 44 years on this earth, I can’t ever remember being spoken to respectfully as an adult by a single member of the scientific or political classes about any issue of substance. Because for them, it’s all about ‘edge’, ‘power games’ and ‘status’ via ‘controlling the masses’. Actually it’s about pathetic little spying rings, but that’s getting off topic…
But if you ever tire of this blog Mr Watts, ever thought of setting one up to discuss modern surveillance methods and how they are used against intelligent skeptics – you’d be amazed, appalled and radicalised if you did, I promise you?!
Congrats Anthony and the rest of the KCR team. Humiliy is very noble, but we all need to realize that the Alarmists got to where they are on the backs of most of us who prefer daily humility. Yes Climate Audit started it, yes the likes of Richard Lindzen, Christy etc helped. Media like Rush Limbaugh or Andrew Bolt (here in Aus) helped locally, but WUWT has done more than all of these combined to bring awareness to the world.
If the AGW hoax starts to REALLY break, and by that I mean when true stories about the hoax reach 30-40% of the volume that AGW propaganda gets in the media, then the public will start to waken en-mass. I hope you have prepared for that – because you will look forward to millions more viewers per month then. You will probably even take on blogs like Drudge, HuffPost etc.

I think you’re painting with an overbroad brush on the question of scientists and respect. I have received many kind and thoughtful replies from scientists who subscribe to AGW (but not in its catastrophic form).
The people who you’re really railing at are offensive, arrogant and abusive – but they are a very small fraction of a percentage of scientists in general. I would estimate that perhaps 30-40 of these individuals are causing 95% of the hot air in global warming. They have the attention of the media for the moment (although that is waning as the climate cools).
In ten years or less, everyone will wonder what the fuss was about.
I hope this page reaches 10 million and becomes the Drudge Report of Climate and Weather.
This is an amazing blog indeed.

There is nothing in France approaching this job, although some sites are interesting, in slightly different style. For the French reading people, I would recommend “Pensée unique” (http://www.pensee-unique.fr/) and “Climat sceptique” (http://climat-sceptique.over-blog.com/).

WUWT is my REALITY REFUGE, daily. I can escape the endless media spin and see that others are seeking real science through their questions and meticulous analysis of the numbers. I trust scientific skepticism, therefore I trust WUWT.
The comments are normally full of even more questions, more unique ideas to explore, sound perspectives, and usually free of the personal vitriol that pervades slanted scientific climate sites.
I just wish the archives were easier to explore. There is so much here that I want to reread.
I learned of WUWT thru Ed Wallace’s Inside Automotive website where he posts his # of hits each month also. However, he also posts I would be interested the # of ‘unique sites’ that visit his site each month, giving what I believe to be a truer idea of the # of people you are reaching. I would be interested in seeing that stat if you can produce it along with the ‘hits’ each month. Either way, keep up the good work because if the opposition is taking the time to dis you on their websites you know you are on the right track. Jealousy can be a good indicator of success.

Just a suggestion, if you decide the t-shirt is a good idea, I believe a picture of Hansen, sitting in a boat – prepared for the forecasted drastically rising sea levels, dressed in a parka and with the boat precariously perched on an ice floe would pretty well sum-up my feelings of AGW. 🙂

What the stats don’t show, unless I am missing something (not uncommon at my age!) is the time spent on a visit. In my case browsing isn’t the word to use as I’m here often for hours. The thing that strikes me is the breadth of knowledge and good humour of the vast majority of the contrbutors, making it worth reading nearly every comment.
This in stark contrast to the often very nasty comments, lack of humour and high level of personal attacks posted on certain AGW sites.
On a final note, maybe Joe Romm is having trouble reading actual measured values instead of the results of computer modelling.
“Compulsive-possessive disorder” and “explode like dandelion puffs” tell me that your writin’ gears are pretty well oiled!
All you need is an editor, wife, friend, or colleague. Even compulsive grammar-nags like me need editing. We all make mistakes.
BTW, I also agree that one of the appeals of this site is the civility. The moderators keep the threads from getting overrun with trolls and flamers spouting ad hominem insults and diverting discussion into cul-de-sacs, as happens elsewhere.

The last I knew Alexa statisitics come only from people who visit your website when they have the Alexa toolbar installed.
As a rough guide it might be within an order of magnitude.
I’ve been done more than a little web site traffic tracking over the years.
I’d also question internal traffic counts until I have seen the logic used.
That all having been said I’d take Anthony’s counts as being closer than Alexa’s.

The increase in trafic on WUWT is surely caused by repeated daily visits by high-ranking members of the Obama Administration. They keep coming back hoping to find something here to validate their blind faith in AGW. And keep getting disappointed.
I’ve been coming to WUWT daily for the past year or so. As a previous poster noted one important stat is the length of visits. I bet I spend an hour a day here at least. I’ve had to give up television just to fit WUWT into my daily routine!

In the matter of reporting annual temperature averages over the last century, given the fact the underlying measurements were taken with devices of less than 1% accuracy, which were not annually re-calibrated, on sites where conditions varied enormously over the measurement cycle [tree growth/removal, new construction of buildings and structures, moving and/or renewing elements of the measurement device and/or its housing, etc.], and also given the fact the results were recorded by unsupervised untrained volunteer, I wonder how many significant digits you need to tag onto the reported result to attain absurdity.
Could the answer be none?

I happened to see Energy Secretary Chu present at the EIA Confernce in Washington a few weeks ago. In his presentation, he uses the IPCC hockey stick graph (http://www.eia.doe.gov/plenary/plenary_main.html#DrChu) as his primary support for AGW. Although the graph was not referenced, I immediately knew it came from Mann (1991) and that it discounted the MWP and the LIA. I knew its weaknesses, its data inputs, and its history.
And I knew all that because I read your site, and for no other reason.

This is truly a wonderful scientific site – the stats are wholly reflective of your tireless efforts and especially the way you run the blog together with the outstanding support of the, also tireless, moderators.
Equally I would like to single out Dr Leif Svalgaard who shows immeasurable patience in dealing with my rather naive questions and as a result (even in my later years) has taught me more than he will ever know.

It seems endemic among those who support the AGW that they disregard the actual content of the report they choose to criticize to get to the conclusion they wish to reach. Mr. Romm finds fault with your data presentation…which requires that he completely ignore both that you listed how your data was collected and that you explicitly stated the purpose for showing your data in that format. He had to ignore the caveats you posted to criticize you for not giving caveats. Truly amazing.

Although I do not post (lack of scientific background/training), the information from WUWT is passed along to my peers in the course of discussions/arguments. I’m another addict to WUWT – no, delete that – supporter of truth and civility and debate and scientific method in a beleaguered science.
The stats count simply does not begin to account for the length of time spent on each page. I doubt Joe Romm scratches the surface there.
A recent attempt to convert me ended up saying that if they were my university supervisor they’d ask me to find another supervisor, to which I said I already had one who gets up at dawn each day.
Why not just humor Joe Romm and report your stats rounded to two significant digits? Then you’d simply be saying that 1.7 million page views in April was up from 1.5 million in March.
Or, if you really want to meet his stated requirement, publish the stats rounded to one significant digit, making Aprils 2 million pages views higher than March’s 1 million.

I see a parallelism in how the media drives AWG and other negative news and am truly frightened by the power that the major media outlets have to drive any particular agenda\viewpoint

Recent rash of Family-cides (seriously is this NATIONAL news? Why promote it other than for shock value?)
No the “media” is not responsible for100% of the above, but IMO the influence in undeniable.
The point is so much power and influence in the hands of the few is NEVER OK, has proven to be dangerous, and will continue to be dangerous. One of the few democratizers of the mainstream media is the internet and the forum that it brings to opposing viewpoints. The problem is also the forum that the internet brings to EVERYONE and can be hard to sift through the static. SO….

Excellent site you have here Anthony, I visit at least once a day and have for the last couple of months. I think sites like this are so inconvenient for Romm and the rest of the climate deniers that they just naturally lash out with immature name calling and denigrating tactics, doing more harm to their misguided cause than anything else. We know we’re right that the debate isn’t settled and have the raw facts to back that up.

Also, there should probably be a better archiving system for WUWT, so that it would be easier to find old threads and so all of the threads would be accessible by the search engines. I think transparency is important and there is some very good information captured in many of these threads, which should be made easily accessible for interested parties.

I am not sure that a banner ad on yahoo or drudge would drive much traffic and it might make WUWT seem over commercialized.
Tee shirts have some potential, but it come down to what’s on the shirt, i.e. the logo/design and that’s really hard to do right. Also, jackets, sweatshirts, gloves, ear warmers, snow shovels, ice scrapers, etc., might be more appropriate than tee shirts…
