President Biden pledged the USA would go net-zero by 2050.
Obama bragged about how, “700 cities in more than 50 countries have pledged to reach net-zero.”
For a while it seemed like that might happen. Some European countries claimed to get 60% of their power from renewables.
But then they faced soaring energy costs and blackouts.

The roads froze with huge ruts that blocked most truck traffic during the 10 days leaving the gas stations without gasoline refills.

AOC understands that the DSA represents the economic populism of the left, and that economic populism in one form or another is on the rise in many places around the world.
One form or the other of economic populism will eventually win out in this country. Either the MAGA movement’s version of economic populism will win out, or the DSA’s version will win out.
One side will win, the other will lose. For the mid to long term future, it’s just that simple.
For true blue Democrats, they are happy as long as anyone who calls themself a Democrat is in power, DSA allied or not. AOC will make her peace with the DSA because she needs their enthusiasm and energy to keep herself in power.
For the Republican Establishment aka the Country Club Republicans, they are perfectly happy to be the controlled opposition to the Democrats as long as they can keep making a lot of money doing it. They see the MAGA movement and its economic populism as their enemy, and they want to see it crushed.
If the Democrats take control of the Congress in 2027 and the presidency in 2029, these Country Club Republicans will huff and puff about the evils of marxism-socialism, but in reality they will take little or no effective action to oppose it.
Why does it have to be one side or the other wins? There are some countries that mix Capitalism with Socialism effectively. The Nordic countries for example. Even the USA has hints of Socialist ideology.
One version of economic populism will win out, and the other will lose, because the middle ground is gone. There is no coming together.
A key driver why there is no coming together is that Americans who play by the rules in working hard to build a future for themselves are losing out in a system where foreign immigrants, legal and illegal, are given preference for hiring in a variety of employment avenues which used to be pathway’s into the middle class.
This is a problem greatly magnified by the loss of American industry to China and to other Asian nations.
And this is true both for those who look towards the DSA’s version of economic populism — promise everyone a lot of free stuff — versus the MAGA movement’s version of economic populism: hire Americans and bring industry back to America even if it means we pay somewhat more for the same stuff.
The DSA’s message resonates powerfully with those who have worked hard and who have next to nothing to show for it.
It’s completely true that everyone’s economic situation will get worse if the DSA’s version of economic populism eventually wins out. But the reality of this possible outcome is an abstraction for those who currently find themselves trapped in an economic strata which no amount of hard work can get them out of.
Neither side will win. One side believes in self-reliance, as I do, but fails to recognize easy wins to keep their jobs. Or gets horribly distracted on things that don’t move the needle.
The other side preaches free everything, but when their followers find out that nothing is free, they will ditch these clueless ones.
The one that actually solves the big problem (too much government interference in the economy) will win the day. Very few have jumped to the forefront on this, though.
My generation was too busy to teach the current generation, as we outsourced this incredibly important role to clueless bureaucrats (Clueless and Bureaucrat, a redundancy, I know.).
One can only hope that the next generation decides to ignore both sides and actually educate themselves. If not, we’re all toast.

There are two emerging drivers of the eventual death of NetZero.

As a matter of interest, I asked Copilot to compare the carbon intensity of the battery firmed solar for Australia’s NEM that a did a while back.
Using 20 year life for solar/battery and 60 year life for USC coal plant, It determined the solar/battery carbon intensity would be 1600gCO2/kWh versus 800gCO2/kWh for USC coal generator.
Not sure if this is good or bad for the planet but it is not good for Australia’s prosperity.
Once again the critical information is missing from public view and discussion. An uncompetitive industrial base and the methods used to support what remains is often overlooked in the shifting tides of market shares and exposure for jobs and investments. The armwavers in DC and biased media don’t bother to investigate how deep the government support goes in Europe for legacy industries. The French have been doing it for generations.

It could easily be that more governments, industries, businesses and consumers have realized that Net Zero in an unattainable goal with the current fossil fuel-dominated energy sources and that renewables can’t come close to supplanting them probably until the next century. So fewer and fewer of the above are willing to make the effort and spend the huge sums needed to reach such a target.

Are you aware that 90% of atmospheric greenhouse gases are clouds and water vapour, over which we have no control. Even after many years burning fossil fuels, carbon dioxide is just 0.04%. It has a tiny effect on climate by comparison. We may need to scrub polluting emissions. Climate change is real and mainly caused by variation in the sun’s activity, it is not man-made and cannot be changed by him. Hence Net Zero (carbon dioxide) is a very very costly scam, perpetrated by people who do not understand the science or who have ulterior motives.
