2026 Atlantic Cyclone Energy Index Running At 85% Below Normal!

Where are all the climate ambulance-chasers? Well, you won’t find them in the Atlantic. 

So far in 2026, Atlantic hurricane activity has been unusually quiet. Currently, the Atlantic Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index is only at 3.1, about 85% below the 1991–2020 climatological normal for this point in the season.

The unusual calmness has been due to a combination of atmospheric and ocean conditions, experts say.

Strong El Niño event

The warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific have driven strong vertical wind shear across the Caribbean and Atlantic Basin, disrupting the vertical structure of developing tropical disturbances, thus hindering the development of hurricanes.

Dry air and Saharan dust

Moreover, continuous plumes of dry, dusty air blowing off the African coast (the Saharan Air Layer) have “dried out” the atmosphere in the region. Tropical storms require moist air to fuel the hurricane development.

Suppressed African easterly waves

The atmospheric disturbances rolling off western Africa that act as the “seeds” for major Atlantic hurricanes have been weaker and less frequent than usual.

Lack of deep warm water

Sea surface temperatures on the very surface are hovering near average across parts of the Atlantic, but there is a lack of deep ocean heat content in areas like the Gulf of Mexico. The developing storms draw up the cooler water from beneath and so act to stall tropical storm growth.

While conditions remain hostile for major storm development, we are now at peak season and sudden shifts can occur.

Not surprisingly, there are lots of natural reasons explaining why dramatic storms aren’t materializing. But when ther storms do show up, the natural reasons disappear and it all gets blamed on human GHG.

Two supercomputers, part of the Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS), were delivered to NOAA under a 2020 contract with General Dynamics Information Technology valued at approximately $150 million for initial cost to build, house, and support the machines and having potential total contract ceiling of $505 million over 10 years for operational support costs and further upgrades.

In August 2023, the supercomputers were upgraded to operate at a speed of 14.5 petaflops each, at a cost of $100 million in federal funding. This investment supported the installation of the “Rhea” supercomputer, adding 8 petaflops to NOAA’s capacity and bringing total capacity from 35 to 43 petaflops.

In September 2024, NOAA announced a further $99 million upgrade for “Rhea”, adding 22 petaflops to bring combined WCROSS speed to a total of 65 petaflops.

In addition, NOAA is integrating a separate HPC system “Ursa” that will bring the grand total of R&D HPC to approximately 73 petaflops. (ref: https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/biden-harris-administration-invests-100-million-in-new-high-performance-computer-system )

Given the above, one can only wonder if NOAA predicted the ACE currently being about 85% below the 1991–2020 climatological normal for this point in the season . . . you know, based on all that expensive supercomputing power and its associated software coding of weather/climate models.

Everyone contemplating investing in “data cen[so/te]rs” should extrapolate these contracts. The latest upgrade was 22 petaflops/$99 million. We might find “data centers” becoming warehouses with a few percent of the volume housing the next generation of devices.
