BP Scraps Major Hydrogen Plans for Teeside

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

One by one, Ed Miliband’s dominoes are falling down:

From the BBC:

BP’s announcement that it had dropped plans for a “green” hydrogen plant has been described as “bitterly disappointing”.

The multinational had previously sought planning permission to build a power plant in Redcar, which would have produced hydrogen by breaking down water using electricity.

But as part of a shift in strategy away from renewables, the firm has now scrapped the scheme.

Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Alec Brown, said that despite the “blow”, BP remained committed to “innovative projects” in the region.

BP had previously said the construction of HyGreen would create up to 500 jobs with the likelihood the “majority” would be taken by people living in the Middlesbrough and Stockton area.

The electricity used at the plant would have mainly been derived from low carbon sources and the hydrogen would have been used by industry.

The firm said it would now be focusing on other projects in the area including Net Zero Teesside and a blue hydrogen plant.

Brown said: “This is bitterly disappointing news – but we remain optimistic about the future.

BP have clearly decided there is no future investing in projects which are totally reliant on government subsidy to be viable.

Ah. Maybe someone told them that burning hydrogen creates that most powerful “greenhouse gas”, H2O!

The electricity used at the plant would have mainly been derived from low carbon sources . . .”.

Hydrogen, perhaps?

What’s the point of using hydrogen as a fuel? Obviously BHP don’t think there’s much point.

Hydrogen, perhaps?”

There you go- a perpetual motion machine! 🙂

In energy field, Green Hydrogen is like exchanging a $100 bill with two $20 bills !

At their level of reasoning they’d have 2 paper bills rather than 1 … c’mon man, what could possibly be wrong with that?

Yep!
Or a counterfeiter washing the ink off a $20 bill to make a $10 bill. Beyond Parody

When you run out of plausible real initiatives, all you can do is “remain optimistic ” about those implausible programs.

Isn’t that the truth! 🙂

UK politicians are going to remain optimistic even as they go off the Net Zero cliff.

What ever is in the manifesto bears little similarity to what is delivered.
The manifesto said, ” we are focused on growth as a priority” the result is an economy riven with new policies that block or actively destroy growth.
It is a mess.

Health is the exception – diseases don’t discriminate – unless Khan is involved; then they’re structurally racist…

The idea always was barking mad. A fuel we do not have, cannot make economically, and if we did manage to find any could not safely transmit or use. And the idea was to reduce or eliminate natural gas thus reducing emissions and saving the planet. Whereas in fact even if you could do all of the above impossibles there’s no reason to think you would have produced any significant reduction in UK emissions, and even if you could do that in this way, you would still have made no impression at all on global emissions.

Barking mad is too kind a description. What has gone wrong with the UK and the US and Australia that these mad unquantified totally implausible ideas can attract huge investments with no prior feasibility studies?

“What has gone wrong with the UK and the US and Australia”

I think the Leftwing politicians in those countries think the Net Zero effort is a good way to gain control of their populations, which is what all radical Leftwingers desire, so they are going to ride this Net Zero insanity as far as it can go.

Net Zero really is insane but radical leftwing politics has found a place for it.

Justin is history now.

The province of Alberta is lobbying for U.S. statehood. One reason for them doing so is they don’t like the “Carbon” taxes that will be levied on them from Ottawa.

We want to be careful in incorporating Canadian provinces into the United States. We don’t want the people who voted for Justin Truedope to be voting in our elections.

Alberta would be more our style.

Ole Trump gets the politicians exercised, doesn’t he! 🙂

That’s what a Change Agent does.

Why would anyone pursue “green hydrogen” when there id such a massive amount of “white (or gold) hydrogen” right under our feet. $92 trillion worth in France alone!

https://dailygalaxy.com/2025/03/france-uncovers-the-worlds-largest-hydrogen-deposit-worth-a-staggering-92-trillion/

Suddenly the stuff is everywhere and apparently we just need to find a way of getting it out of the ground. According to the article the deposit contains 46 million tons of H2. That’s 92 billion pounds, so its worth $92 Trillion at a mere $1000/pound. Hmm… seems someone might be a bit math challenged. Funny there’s not a word about what the cost of recovery, storage, transport etc. might be.

Making hydrogen from perfectly good electricity is not entirely rational. If you assume the electricity is generated from “free” sunlight you can convince yourself…except PV electricity hasn’t shown itself to be “free”. If you assume the hydrogen is energy storage during the nightime for the electricity generated during the daytime, once again you can convince yourself. Once again you find that the hydrogen equipment needed is more expensive than batteries…and batteries are more expensive than backup fossil fuel fired generators not to mention manufacturing sufficient batteries requires a lot of mining and processing. For large scale power generation, you end up either at nuclear or carbon sequestration, and at the other end of the scale maybe some niche overnight hyrogen generation application like warehouse forklift truck fuel for use in an internal combustion engine.

This project was angled at supplying the experiment in domestic heating with hydrogen that was supposed to be imposed on Redcar. That project blew up when the residents refused to participate, so this one inevitably followed. It was supposed to be 500MW by 2030.

There are reports of a shortage, world wide, or potable water. So why are we making it worse by using water to get hydrogen?

Curious minds want to know.
