The Heartland Institute

The historic and devastating fires in Los Angeles exposed the incompetence of leaders such as Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass. So how do state legislators want to address that? By allowing victims who had their lives destroyed sue Big Oil. Of course. The Heartland Institute’s Anthony Watts, Sterling Burnett, Linnea Lueken, Jim Lakely, and special guest Gregory Wrightstone of the CO2 Coalition blow holes in that absurd political stunt and also discuss other recent to abuse the courts to push climate alarmism.

Also, Lee Zeldin has just started his first week as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, and already the environmental left is terrified that the days of considering human emissions of carbon dioxide are coming to an end. We will dig deeper into the EPA’s “endangerment finding” for CO2 and whether it can be overturned in the next four years. We will also cover some of the “Crazy Climate News of the Week.”

I get the daily Essential California” newsletter from the LA Times. They are looking for more deep pockets to tap into so they want to go after the insurance industry that underwriters Big Oil.

From the LA Times:
“How much money do insurance companies have in fossil fuels?
More than half a trillion dollars as of 2019, according to a 2023 study led by the nonprofit Ceres.
Researchers analyzed data provided by property and casualty companies and life insurance groups and found that top 16 insurers in the U.S. “held approximately 50% of the over $500 billion dollars in fossil fuel-related assets owned by the sector. “
Among property insurers, State Farm and Berkshire Hathaway had the most money invested by orders of magnitude — $30.9 billion and $20.9 billion, respectively.
It’s not just investing. Insurers are also underwriting fossil fuel projects, which researchers argue “helps greenhouse gas-intensive industries continue operations contributing to global warming.”

later it continues:

“Carmen Balber, executive director of L.A.-based Consumer Watchdog, said her group has been asking current California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to resume his predecessor Jones’ initiative and require insurance companies to report their fossil fuel investments again. Lara previously denied that request.
“Insurance companies are passing all the costs of climate change onto policyholder … but keeping all the profits,” she told me. “If climate change is making insurance losses worse — and there is no question that they are — the insurance industry should not be contributing to that problem,” she said.”

They currently are looking for transparency so insurance customers can make informed decisions. The companies have not been forthcoming as they likely realize the state will use that data to assess fines for damages that come from state and local mismanagement.

California has a petition for signature to put a referendum on the 2028 ballot for California to become an independent country.

Maybe we should let them.

Also: Is there a definition anywhere for who counts as “Big Oil“? Is it just Exon, or plus Saudi Arabia, or plus all oil companies, or plus anyone who drives an ICE, or plus Texas, or plus oil exporting nations, or plus chefs who use gas stoves, or…
It ought to be defined somewhere in the article.

Can we sue EV drivers on a sliding scale for using roads made from bitumen because an EV is much heavier than my little Fiesta

Given that California, New York, and at least Vermont have sued the hydro-carbon energy companies it would awesome to see the oil companies PULL OUT of these states with all their energy products.
The aftermath and whining would be fun to watch!
