I Press My Own Buttons’: Al Gore Goes On Unhinged Rant During UN Climate Summit

Former Vice President Al Gore raged against “polluters” during an address at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, demanding that people listen to scientists about climate change.

The COP29 summit, which started Monday, previously featured speakers who proposed taxes on the meat and dairy industry and “climate finance” initiatives for less-developed countries. While addressing the conference, Gore claimed that predictions by climate scientists had been proven to be “dead right.”

“The fact that the scientists who predicted all of this decades ago have been proven dead right should cause the rest of us to pay more attention to what they’re telling us now!” Gore vehemently told the crowd, eliciting cheering and applause from attendees. “Do we listen to the polluters, who don’t want to do anything meaningful that might reduce fossil fuels, or do we listen to the scientists who have been telling us what we need to do?” (RELATED: Speaker At UN Summit Claims ‘Naming Extreme Heat Events’ Will Help Fight Climate Change)

“This was a very extreme drought in China in the middle of this year, and what’s happening in the Amazon, the Rio Solimões, the Rio Negro, it’s the worst drought on record in the Amazon — 90% of the river flow in Colombia is gone, Ecuador’s losing its hydro because of this,” Gore continued. “In Namibia, and also Zimbabwe, they are now killing livestock — killing wild animals in order to help feed hungry people. How long are we going to let this get worse until we decide to take action?! I’m sorry, I press my own buttons these days.”

Gore claimed that during the hour he was speaking, 30 million tons of ice was melting in Greenland, warning that the melting ice could have catastrophic consequences for the oceans.

“That is fresh water coming off Greenland into the North Atlantic, where a key part of the ocean current circulation system is involved. It could be disrupted,” he said. “Some scientists disagree, but more and more, they’re raising the alarm.” (Click Here To Watch The Daily Caller Documentary “Anarchy U”)

“And if you look at the bottom statement, these peer-reviewed — these scientists say in this peer-reviewed study, ‘We estimate a collapse around mid-century.’ What?! What?!” Gore continued. “Some of the load-bearing elements of our entire Earth ecological system are at risk. And what are we doing? Just talking away, talking away, not making much progress. Again, I’m getting stirred up here so I’ll try to calm down.”

Multiple officials from the Biden administration — which notably backed away from a major emissions initiative at the event — including Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, White House climate advisor John Podesta and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, are attending the event in Azerbaijan. Podesta told attendees at the conference during a Monday speech that despite the election of former President Donald Trump, the United States would still be involved in addressing climate change, Bloomberg reported.

Mann claims a drought is a climate issue. Droughts come and go, climate just moves on. The bogus climate claims now fall increasingly on deaf ears. I’m over 80 so I’ve seen some weather. The climate where I live is about what it has always been. What is this “scientists have been saying for decades” business? Climate happens in cycles – but when the cycle is up, alarmists point to it and claim it is caused by human-emitted CO2, although we only contribute about 5% per year.
Not to mention that CO2 FOLLOWS temperature change, not causes it. Set that beer out for a couple hours and see what happens to the fizz…

NO, it cannot. If that were the case, life would not exist on this planet. But the real reason is that there are billions of molecules of earth’s surface radiating to space for every single CO2 molecule. Shine your flashlight on your stove with the lights off. Measure the rise in temperature.

CO2 can be both cause and effect?
Yes, anything can be both cause and effect.

But not a large cause and effect…
If they were the cumulative effect of any change would be a runaway scenario. The system would be unstable. We would have a snowball Earth or a new Venus.

CO2 cannot be both cause and effect of newsworthy climate global warming.

And that means that adaptation to weather still makes sense as a policy but mitigation – reducing emissions – does not.

Reply to  Chris Hanley
November 17, 2024 3:11 pm

CO2 can be both cause and effect.

“Cause” is a misnomer historically. People acknowledge the fact that CO2 has trailed the increases in temperature. Alarmists say that once the CO2 started increasing then it amplified the warming.

But what almost nobody considers is that CO2 trails the cooling. So something is controlling both warming AND cooling and its not CO2. CO2 is not the control knob, its importance is overstated.

>> The fact that the scientists who predicted all of this decades ago . .

That is a very good point and should be mentioned much more often!
We now know that CMIP5 and older models were incorrect:
https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/13/3465/2020/
“we find that the ECS increase can be attributed to the more advanced treatment of aerosols, with the largest contribution coming from the effect of aerosols on cloud microphysics”
>> Other models had similar corrections but so far lack the scrutiny to quantify the effect, their scientist are to busy to go to conferences

The statements by climate scientists back then with a certainty we now know to lack a systematic uncertainty of at least 25% (the rough difference between similar CMIP5 and CMIP6 models, older models lack other corrections)!

How could that happen and were these climate scientists back then behaving so unscientifically?
As experts they must have known about these weaknesses, Lindzen pointed them out 30 years ago:
https://www.epw.senate.gov/105th/lind0710.htm
“The trouble with current models is that they generally lack the physics to deal with the upper level water vapor budget, and they are generally unable, for computational reasons, to properly calculate a quantity like water vapor which varies sharply both vertically and horizontally (Sun and Lindzen, 1993, Lindzen, 1995). Indicative of these problems is the recent work of J.J. Bates and D.L. Jackson at NOAA who found, using satellite data from infrared sounders, that, on the average, current models underestimate zonally averaged (averaged around a latitude circle) water vapor by about 20%. This is illustrated in Figure 2. It should be noted that this represents an error in radiative forcing of about 20 Watts per square meter, as compared with the forcing of 4 Watts per square meter due to a doubling of carbon dioxide (Thompson and Warren, 1982, Lindzen, 1995). More recent observational analyses by Spencer and Braswell (1997), using satellite microwave data, suggest that even Bates and Jackson have overestimated water vapor, and that the discrepancy with models is still greater. Under the circumstances, there seems to be little actual basis for the most important positive feedback in models. Given our inability to detect expected warming in the temperature data, one might reasonably conclude that models have overestimated the problem.”

Did these climate scientists just not know what they are doing or are they consciously misleading?
Either way, Gore you have a point, these climate scientists cannot be trusted until the mistakes from back then are worked out!

aka Gore´s claim that climate scientists back then “knew” something others didn’t (beside in a religious sense maybe) is demonstratively absurd!

It is okay to be wrong in science and part of the process.

But it is about time that the scientists among the climate scientists start to discuss that the upgraded models disqualify all older models and statements made from it.
Otherwise they are lying by omission of truth!

How do you code “worse than we thought” into a current climate model if the old model was “settled science”?

November 16, 2024 7:23 pm

From the above article:
” ‘The fact that the scientists who predicted all of this decades ago have been proven dead right should cause the rest of us to pay more attention to what they’re telling us now!’ Gore vehemently told the crowd, . . .”

Let’s see, decades ago would be in year 2004 or earlier . . . there’s been so much progress and learning since then, but perhaps Al Gore hasn’t noticed. 😳

So does “predicting all of this” include:
the slow increase in Antarctic sea-ice since 1979 (https://wattsupwiththat.com/2024/11/16/antarctica-sea-ice-has-slowly-increased-since-1979-science-paper-finds/ )?
climate change increasing crop yields (https://wattsupwiththat.com/2024/11/06/right-our-world-in-data-climate-change-is-increasing-crop-yields-concern-about-future-decline-is-unwarranted/ )?
the increase in atmospheric CO2 being the result of global warming, not the cause (https://wattsupwiththat.com/2024/11/02/the-geological-record-of-climate-change-and-why-todays-increase-in-atmospheric-co2-is-the-result-of-global-warming-not-the-cause/ )
the 2024 scientific finding that plants absorb 31% more CO₂ than previously believed (https://wattsupwiththat.com/2024/10/29/oops-science-was-settled-until-it-wasnt-plants-absorb-31-more-co%e2%82%82-than-we-thought/ )

I could go on and on, but need I? One can click on the “Predictions” tab in the menu bar at the top of this WUWT webpage, then clicking back to Pages 7 through 12, to see just how pitifully WRONG some “scientists” predictions about climate have proven to be since they were made “decades ago”.

As for Al Gore’s claim . . . well, there’s just no excuse . . . a dyed in-the-wool politician desperately trying to stay relevant in a world that has fully discounted him.

Give me that old time religion, here are two of the great man’s predictions from his Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit 1992:
“Up to 60 percent of the present population of Florida may have to be relocated.” (within a few decades)
In 2024, Florida’s population is estimated to be 22,976,000. It is currently the fastest growing state in the US.
“About 10 million people in Bangladesh will lose their homes and means of sustenance because of the rising sea level, due to global warming, in the next few decades. Where will they go? Whom will they displace? What political conflicts will result?”
Bangladesh’s landmass has increased by 20 square kilometres (eight square miles) annually.

John Kerry stepped down as US Climate envoy in April 2024 to “do whatever he can to help re-elect President Joe Biden in 2024 by campaigning on what Biden has accomplished on the climate issue.”

So he worked pretty hard for 3 months before Biden withdrew. He then immediately endorsed Kamala Harris, but failed to “do whatever he can to help elect President Kamala Harris in 2024 by campaigning on what Harris has accomplished on the climate issue.”
