A warming result – as much as it may seem reasonable to you and to many others – cannot be reliably attributed to incremental non-condensing GHGs. I regard those confidently stated claims of cause and effect to be unsound.

What I mean is that neither water vapor nor CO2 directly WARM the surface. The frigid air doesn’t heat the relatively warmer surface.
The greenhouse effect does not warm the surface, the sun heats the surface and the greenhouse gases delay cooling. You can only think of the greenhouse effect as warming in a comparison to a hypothetical atmosphere (that doesn’t ever exist) that is perfectly transparent to outgoing infrared. It’s 33K warmer than it would have been if greenhouse gases didn’t delay the loss of heat to space.
In my view, using the word “warming” is the biggest stumbling block to people understanding the GHE.

Experimental problem, how to measure and confirm that it is GHG not cloud that reduces some chosen cooling, first at some chosen locations and then globally.
How do you measure the amount of cooling in any case? Presently, recourse uses daily Tmin temperatures over time to seek a cooling trend. Problem, the amount of change is similar to the overall error, so high uncertainty. Second problem, other mechanisms like ocean temperatures might also cause cooling, so separation of effects is needed. Still cannot distinguish cloud effect from GHG. Complication. Is the cloud effect constant over the time the temperatures are measured? Or is cloud so dynamic that it forever tries to modulate temperatures? For each time cloud cover is measured as increasing, is there another place decreasing? Or are places not teleconnected? What is the uncertainty of cloud cover estimates? How do you cope with nightly cloud coming and going while the thermometer is recording?
When I think in these “what if?” terms, it is easy to conclude that the story is not backed by reliable measurement and is basically accepted because people think it should work that way. That becomes the official story.
That puts importance on matters like Rick’s tenacity with matters related to the 30C SST limit and numerous other challenges to conventional wisdom. Thus the importance of WUWT. The stakes are high. Geoff S

My perspective is that indeed the stakes are high. There is great urgency to persuade a majority of the public and the politicians they support that there is NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY. Anything that becomes a stumbling block to that critical persuasion is something that we need to avoid.
We cannot pin our hopes on convincing people that their firm BELIEF in the GHE is fundamentally wrong. Nobody can quantify it by your own description of the problem. The belief is too prevalent to be easily overcome by speculative arguments. We can however bracket the problem while not feeling the necessity to litigate that contentious point.
We can and I would argue we must take the pragmatic, empirical approach. Atmospheric gases play a minor role in the release of heat. Most OLR leaves the atmosphere from ice particles either in the atmosphere or on the ground if cooler than 273K.
All of the atmosphere has water vapour and It only takes 1mm of water equivalent of ice particles to absorb and retransmit the OLR. So the vast majority of OLR leaving the planet goes via ice.
The ice over tropical oceans regulating at 30C can have as little as 150W/m^2 of OLR leaving the atmosphere. That OLR is not being emitted by gasses. It is coming from a thin layer of ice particles very high in the atmosphere.
Ice controls the release of OLR not gasses. Gasses are bit players.
Think about it. When OLR exits the atmosphere, it causes cooling. There is always water in the atmosphere and that water turns to ice above 273K to dominate further release of OLR. The Ice hangs about until some is melted by the sun and restored to water vapour.
I keep testing environmental extremist theory by filling my bathtub with tepid water, and then turning up my thermostat to its maximum setting. Somehow I never have a hot bath.

We use reanalysis and observational data to link the lower stratospheric ozone regulation of the ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) component of solar energy to ENSO modulation. Results indicate that during ENSO extremes, the Walker Circulation (WC) and Brewer Dobson Circulation are related to lower stratospheric ozone alterations east of the date line over the Pacific. These in turn are linked to upper tropospheric anomalous dipole temperature patterns on either side of the equator. The ensuing changes in geopotential height values do not only drive equatorial zonal wind anomalies in the upper troposphere that are reversed at the equatorial surface, but also impact on the intensity of the South Pacific High circulation. When the WC is enhanced, a La Nina type of circulation is indentified but if the circulation cell is inverted, the anomalous circulation results in an El Nino. Though the anomalous lower stratospheric ozone peaks during austral summer it is significant throughout the ENSO lifecycle. Hence, ENSO structure and variability are mainly linked to the lower stratospheric ozone instigated internal dynamics of the Pacific atmosphere. The ENSO forcing most likely originates from the ozone related regulation of the incoming solar UV-B radiation rather than the Pacific Ocean surface.

The natural GHE resists heating during the day as you emphasise but it also resists cooling during the night. The overall effect is to reduce extremes both locally and latitudinally. And of course, there are non-condensing GHGs such as CO2 that are part of that natural GHE.
The enhanced GHE is just the additional effect of adding non-condensing GHGs to the atmosphere. The chief effect is to further reduce cooling at night, and since there is a greater proportion of night to day during the winter, it is also more significant in winter.
This is what I refer to as Global Milding. It’s not dangerous and indeed it’s beneficial to human flourishing. Cold is the killer, not warmth. Global Milding expands arable land areas and brings us bountiful harvests. You can only think of the greenhouse effect as warming in a comparison to a hypothetical atmosphere (that doesn’t ever exist) that is perfectly transparent to outgoing infrared. It’s 33K warmer than it would have been if greenhouse gases didn’t delay the loss of heat to space.

Yes, some radiation is absorbed and re-emitted by IR active gases up to the tropopause. Calculations of the free mean path for CO2 show that energy passes from surface to tropopause in less than 5 milliseconds. This is almost speed of light, so delay is negligible..

Experimental problem, how to measure and confirm that it is GHG not cloud that reduces some chosen cooling, first at some chosen locations and then globally.
How do you measure the amount of cooling in any case? Presently, recourse uses daily Tmin temperatures over time to seek a cooling trend. Problem, the amount of change is similar to the overall error, so high uncertainty. Second problem, other mechanisms like ocean temperatures might also cause cooling, so separation of effects is needed. Still cannot distinguish cloud effect from GHG. Complication. Is the cloud effect constant over the time the temperatures are measured? Or is cloud so dynamic that it forever tries to modulate temperatures? For each time cloud cover is measured as increasing, is there another place decreasing? Or are places not teleconnected? What is the uncertainty of cloud cover estimates? How do you cope with nightly cloud coming and going while the thermometer is recording?
When I think in these “what if?” terms, it is easy to conclude that the story is not backed by reliable measurement and is basically accepted because people think it should work that way. That becomes the official story.
That puts importance on matters like Rick’s tenacity with matters related to the 30C SST limit and numerous other challenges to conventional wisdom. Thus the importance of WUWT. The stakes are high. Geoff S

Geoff, I readily agree with you that quantifying the enhanced greenhouse effect is problematic. I don’t rule out the possibility that the equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) to a doubling of CO2 could even be zero.
My perspective is that indeed the stakes are high. There is great urgency to persuade a majority of the public and the politicians they support that there is NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY. Anything that becomes a stumbling block to that critical persuasion is something that we need to avoid.
We cannot pin our hopes on convincing people that their firm BELIEF in the GHE is fundamentally wrong. Nobody can quantify it by your own description of the problem. The belief is too prevalent to be easily overcome by speculative arguments. We can however bracket the problem while not feeling the necessity to litigate that contentious point.
We can and I would argue we must take the pragmatic, empirical approach. Even if you radically reject the idea that the enhanced GHE works as the conventional hypothesis claims, we can still accept it for the sake of argument and show from empirical data that ECS would be too low to cause harm. Many people could be persuaded from the data that this is true, and still cling to their preconceptions about the GHE.
By analogy, we do not need to “prove” that Jesus is the son of God and he said killing is a sin, therefore murder must be avoided. We can make non-theological arguments against murder that any person can accept even as they maintain diverse views on religion. The critical question is whether they’re going to kill you, not whether they don’t do it because they see the light of Christ.
Sure, we should try to solve this interesting scientific problem of whether conventional GHE theory is correct or not, but it is not the critical problem. The critical problem is political in nature—persuading enough voters to vote for candidates who agree that there is NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY. We should not care why they believe that as long as they do.
Atmospheric gases play a minor role in the release of heat. Most OLR leaves the atmosphere from ice particles either in the atmosphere or on the ground if cooler than 273K.
All of the atmosphere has water vapour and It only takes 1mm of water equivalent of ice particles to absorb and retransmit the OLR. So the vast majority of OLR leaving the planet goes via ice.
The ice over tropical oceans regulating at 30C can have as little as 150W/m^2 of OLR leaving the atmosphere. That OLR is not being emitted by gasses. It is coming from a thin layer of ice particles very high in the atmosphere.
Ice controls the release of OLR not gasses. Gasses are bit players.
Think about it. When OLR exits the atmosphere, it causes cooling. There is always water in the atmosphere and that water turns to ice above 273K to dominate further release of OLR. The Ice hangs about until some is melted by the sun and restored to water vapour.
I keep testing environmental extremist theory by filling my bathtub with tepid water, and then turning up my thermostat to its maximum setting. Somehow I never have a hot bath.

China was responsible for 56% of world coal consumption in 2023 and India exceeded the combined consumption of Europe and North America for the first time.
Meanwhile coal retained its position as the dominant fuel for power generation with fossil fuels overall forming 60% of global electricity production.

Abstract
We use reanalysis and observational data to link the lower stratospheric ozone regulation of the ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) component of solar energy to ENSO modulation. Results indicate that during ENSO extremes, the Walker Circulation (WC) and Brewer Dobson Circulation are related to lower stratospheric ozone alterations east of the date line over the Pacific. These in turn are linked to upper tropospheric anomalous dipole temperature patterns on either side of the equator. The ensuing changes in geopotential height values do not only drive equatorial zonal wind anomalies in the upper troposphere that are reversed at the equatorial surface, but also impact on the intensity of the South Pacific High circulation. When the WC is enhanced, a La Nina type of circulation is indentified but if the circulation cell is inverted, the anomalous circulation results in an El Nino. Though the anomalous lower stratospheric ozone peaks during austral summer it is significant throughout the ENSO lifecycle. Hence, ENSO structure and variability are mainly linked to the lower stratospheric ozone instigated internal dynamics of the Pacific atmosphere. The ENSO forcing most likely originates from the ozone related regulation of the incoming solar UV-B radiation rather than the Pacific Ocean surface.
