Oxford Researcher: Frequent Intense Cold Spells are Caused by Global Warming

Global warming may be behind an increase in the frequency and intensity of cold spells

One less obvious consequence of global warming is also getting growing attention from scientists: a potential increase in the intensity and frequency of winter cold snaps in the northern hemisphere.

Weather phenomena like the Beast from the East in winter 2018, the cold spell of Arctic air that reached as far South as Texas in February 2021, or the storm that left Madrid and Athens unusually covered in snow for days in early 2021 are becoming more common.

Some of the mechanisms that lead to their occurrence are strengthened by global warming. Key climate mechanisms, like exchanges of energy and air masses between different altitude ranges in the atmosphere, are evolving in ways expected to cause an increase in both the intensity and duration of cold snaps. These link to the behaviour of a region in the high atmosphere called the stratosphere.

Global warming makes extreme weather more extreme, and scientific studies are starting to provide proof that this also applies to extreme winter cold spells. Developing the best possible modelling tools is essential to predict the evolution of extreme weather events in the coming years so that we can be better prepared for them.

What can I say? CO2 truly is the magic molecule. Hot or cold, if you don’t like the weather, CO2 is to blame.

The climate scaremongering strategy is simple

Blame any bad news on climate change, with no time wasted collecting facts, data and applying logic to reach that conclusion

The mainstream media will publish the claim and add a scary headline, such as: “Scientists say climate change will kill your dog”

By the time a conservative has refuted the fake climate change claim, there will be ten more scary climate change claims in the news.

Meanwhile, the actual climate is getting better with a mere ten minutes of snow shoveling one time this winter in SE Michigan … versus three times last year, and almost once a week in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Global warming is good news for most humans and animal on this planet. But you can’t say that to a leftist, because they he, she, or it, will go berserk.

For the reactionary down voters….
1/ Snow fall records are being broken all over the place. Snow fall is increasing world wide but Greene claims the ”climate is getting better” because he thinks he is shovelling less snow lately? No, the climate is not changing. The weather changes in localized areas just as it always has. Get back to me when it starts raining in the Atacama or Namibia in summer.
2/ The definition of climate in this context (30 years’ weather) is a meaningless, made-up term from the WMO and is way too short a time period to use to claim the ”climate is changing”.
3/ A bit of global warming is not ”climate change”
4/ Greene, as usual, is talking out of his arse.

Oh look at that, a down vote. Dr. Holdren said at the end of that YouTube:

“But I believe the odds are that we can expect as a result of
global warming, to see more of this pattern of extreme cold…. “

At the end of 2013, there was a minor cold snap here in Milwaukee and elsewhere around the country and of course people were saying at the time “See where’s all that warming you climate crusaders are always telling us about?” Instead of ignoring all that, President Obama no doubt told his science advisor to debunk it. And so Dr. Holdren instead of saying, something like, “You know, we are still going to see cold weather from time to time” piped up and said, global warming will result in more patterns of extreme cold.

People like Holdren just can’t help themselves from telling whoppers. Dr. Suess wrote his first children’s book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” which was a tale told to encourage young children to tell the truth and not embellish or exaggerate the facts. Apparently Dr. Holdren’s parents never read him that book.

Let me explain beyond a shadow of a doubt with geometric logic (h/t Capt Queeg).

If your average high temperature is “x”, and extreme cold weather is defined as “y”, when you increase “x” without increasing “y” it appears “y” is now more extreme than before.

Reply to  Tom in Florida

CO2 increases the temp of the minimum temps, that’s what the data shows, not what’s in the demented mind’s of climate alarmists.

More accurately, it slows the cooling, say at night, so that sometimes the Sun is coming up before the air has had a chance to cool down. Wouldn’t happen every night but after a decade or 5 a trend is visible.

Reply to  Tom in Florida
March 7, 2024 5:45 am

Only for the most part, it is the average LOW temperatures that are increasing, NOT the average high temperatures.

And that bald-faced lie is 180 degrees opposite of reality, because a warmer climate reduces temperature differentials (tropics to high latitudes, day vs. night), which, in turn, makes weather LESS EXTREME, not more.

It just gets more and more bizarre. Global warming causes increasing warmth and increasing cold.
Now the middle ground might conclude that global warming is an invented concern. When the planet warms up, as it has over recent decades that is just normal variation. when it cools as it will over subsequent decades that will be normal variation too.
Maybe we could persuade people to be less anxious about normal variation, if we could just find something more worthwhile to fret about….
Isn’t there a Hunga Tunga Bunga volcanoe somewhere to take on some of the global threat needed by the media to keep everyone anxious?

Global warming makes extreme weather more extreme, and scientific studies are starting to provide proof that this also applies to extreme winter cold spells. Developing the best possible modelling tools is essential to predict the evolution of extreme weather events in the coming years so that we can be better prepared for them.”

We are all familiar with these tactics by now and it really doesn’t matter what the qualifications of the sources may be because in essence one claim is false and the other is true.  The first emphasised claim about extreme weather has never been proven. The proof that it has never been proven lies in the second emboldened claim about developing  best possible models, something humanity can only achieve with a massive leap in technology of the kind that is currently way beyond our grasp.

What seems a long time ago now I set out the binary problem of a ten by ten matrix (I used millimetres but for any measure we arrive at the same problem) which produces two to the power of one hundred potential outcomes. It is a huge number and not one that a contemporary computer can handle. If we introduce a third dimension the outcome is three to the power of 100. If we are looking at half a dozen variables them we have six to the power of 100.  And so on all the way to the realisation that our models are constrained by our machines, and our machines are constrained by a lack of technologically potential progress because we cannot make our chips do any more, any faster.

We can improve programming language to better cater for large numbers but even that is no mean feat. We can increase storage space but still there is a huge problem about durations of calculations leading to chips overheating from sheer time taken to attempt what is almost the impossible for them.  We are essentially in Einstein territory without an Einstein in sight but these academics just cannot leave the filthy lucre that comes with appearing to have ‘control of climate problems’ when they actually have none – none at all, not even the foggiest idea what the weather is doing and why when it doesn’t do what they think it should do.

Meanwhile the weather does exactly what it has always done whether it is on an up cycle, a down cycle, or a baffling mix of a bit of everything thrown in.  Nature is random with infinite potential.  Our computers cannot (and will not) do random … our academics like all the rest of us don’t understand random or infinity because they are impossible to imagine other than anything goes. Meanwhile one electric storm at sea is using baffling amounts of energy compared to our trifling with fossil fuel which is replicated twenty four hours a day by countless numbers of storms. And we think we have computers that replicate all that? And where do our academics believe all that energy comes from?  CO2?

Who’s having a laugh I ask?

You describe the limitations on computers well but it misses out one important aspect. These mediocre minds aren’t using computers to push the boundaries of complex formulae, they are just using them as a substitute for thinking. They are reducing complicated systems to a simple level they can understand and playing computer games with numbers. What they are doing would be a complete joke to serious scientists if they weren’t pushing this madness onto society.

Back in February 2022 Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the UK Royal Meteorological Society said on BBC Radio 4’s ‘World at One’

“If you look back over the last, say, 50 years or so there isn’t a compelling trend that we’ve seen in the amount of storminess we get in the UK” and

“we’re not seeing any significant changes or trends within the number of storms or maximum wind gusts over the last five decades”

I read somewhere that she had reiterated such points on the BBC recently but unfortunately did not make a note of it.

Ahhhrg, it seems that paper suggesting academia has their overall IQ drop to below average is borne out here. Haven’t these idiots been saying the arctic has been warming at a faster rate than the lower latitudes? Duh, thermodynamics 101 says it’s the delta T, (the temperature difference) which causes bad weather systems. So if the delta T is going down, then bad weather will reduce with the so called global warming.
